I don't have the time right now, I'm at work but we need more photos of the skyline to give everyone a better perspective. Plus that is an older pic. If you took a photo from that same spot today it would be much more impressive. There is a 470 foot Hotel, a 30 floor condo tower, four 22 or 24 floor condo towers, and a nice hotel u/c that is popping up above the convention center. I believe they would all be visible from that spot.

I'll try and post some other pics in here soon.

I'll finish with an old yet colorful shot from Harbor Island (Note this one is missing 3 substantial towers)

Yes the skyline is quite short, the tallest building is 500ft because the airport is just over a mile away and the FAA has placed a height restriction of 500ft so that the buildings do not interfere with navigational instruments. However, there is a lot of discussion about moving the airport since it is quite small with one runway and little expansion, which would lift the restriction.

December 22nd, 2004, 07:06 AM
right now I think it really is a 6 out of 10. Many more "filler towers" in the 400 to 500 foot range are on the way. The skyline will get a real boost once the FAA lifts it height restriction for certain sections of downtown. Developers are salivating to build 650 to 750 foot towers and this is when the rating will perhaps jump up to the 8 to 8.5 level. Lets keep our fingers crossed that common sense will prevail with the FAA. :drunk:

wow sd urban those new photos are really nice. I think once Electra, Lane Field tower (what ever it ends up being) and the other Bosa Highrises on Pacific Highway are complete the skyline will really being rocking.

I'm surprised no one has taken a panoramic shot from the far western end of Harbor Island. I swear to garsh, go down there at Sunset and take a pano from that angle.

There are a couple of restaurants under renovation right now on the bay so you can drive in to the parking lot and snap a pic. Some one hit that up! The skyline looks huge from there and Pinnacle really fills the gap between One America and the Hyatt complex from that angle. :eek2:

San Diego has an odd skyline for a metro of 3 million. Its short, but what it lacks height it makes up with good architecture...for the most part.

Yeah, but the City it self has only...1.3 million.. I think we are doing just fine.

I http://www.burgarden.educ.goteborg.se/elevakt/elevsidor/hemsida/Bildarkiv/images/heart_gif.jpg San Diego

Surpassing the 3 million mark, San Diego County grew by 41,000 people in 2003 to hit 3,017,300 as of Jan. 1, 2004, reports the California Department of Finance.

The county remains the third largest in California, but only trailing Orange County by 100 residents. But next year, San Diego should be the state's second largest county, still far behind No. 1 Los Angeles, which had 10.1 million residents as of Jan. 1.

The city of San Diego's population grew by 12,600, or 1 percent, in 2003, opening Jan. 1, 2004 with 1.29 million citizens. The city remains the state's second largest, trailing Los Angeles' 3.9 million and ahead of San Jose's 926,200.

Of California a city with populations less than 300,000, Chula Vista was the fifth fastest growing in 2003, adding 8,500 to hit 209,100. Also, Murrieta in Riverside County, which is in many respects a suburb of San Diego County, was the third fastest growing, adding 9,400 residents for a total of 77,700. The fastest growing was Elk Grove, adding 23,200 to hit 109,100, followed by Bakersfield, which added 10,800 to hit 279,700.

The only city in San Diego County recording negative growth was National City, down 3,000 people, or 5 percent, to 60,000.

I'm more than a little disappointed in San Diego's skyline. One of the largest urban areas in the States should have a skyline 4 times this size, yes?

I hope the new construction jazzes it up a little.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why such a big city has such a small skyline????

Yeah its kind of hard to build a city when you have a restriction of 500ft! At least were considerablly dense in comparison.

My thoughts, you have big expectations. ;)

I am going to be moving to San Diego in March and I wanted to know something about a complex I am going to be moving into. It is called CityView and it is located on 17th St. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about that area. Is there any projects going on in that area like right next to the highway? I'll be right off Broadway right before the highway, so I want to know if that area is hopping with development?

I really believe the only thing that is holding San Diego back from developing the buildings we all dream of is the current decision makers of the city. I believe that if they were all changed out with those people who are willing to take on the FAA's ruling and build a 800ftr. then I think we could get it. The only thing is, as of yet have we had the need for an 800ftr.? I sure as hell think so! How do you all see it?

Brilliant city, San Diego. The skyline has grown since I was there about 3 years ago - it looks so much more "full" and grown up. While it may not be that tall, it still looks great and the setting is fantastic; the bay area is absolutely terrific.

I tend to forget San Diego is as big as it is (California's second largest city). For a city it's size, not a huge skyline, but it's in the shadow of LA and doesn't really need it. Lots of modern buildings and glass, and that fits well with the harbour setting and the weather. Good density too.

It looks somewhat like a modified Miami skyline. There's a small sense of disappointment, since San Diego proper has over a million people, but nonetheless I like it. I think that this falls in line with what I said about Moscow's skyline, in that it probably would look better in person.

It looks dense but it needs that 'iconic' tower or a skyscraper that towers above the rest

8/10

People are too flattering and easy going on these skyline polls.

San Diego lacks an iconic building and also it's skyline ,like many on here, looks much better at night. that's because in the day it's scrapers look somewhat exposed.. lacking individuality and lacking character.

5/10...

7. The density is great, it has some pretty nice buildings, and it looks good at night. However, the height limit is pathetic and really limits its potential. Too bad, cause I thought it was a nice place when I visited.
