Great photo collection. I noticed that in most of those old cinemas, there are hotels. It kind of reminds me of Wong Kar Wai's movie 2045.

-Petula Clark

Thanks Matteo, my little quote came from Petula's 'Downtown.' Nice lyrics. I was planning to post the entire lyrics but it wouldn't be 'skyscrapy' wouldn't? :) I might as well go to lyrics.com instead. :)

Yes, I believe "Color My World" was used in M&M's commercial.

Hi Lili. It's 2046. :)

Has anyone seen Wong Kar Wai's 'In the Mood for Love'? The hotel scene exactly looks like the rented rooms in Calvo Building, Escolta.

Thanks for the link, boybaha...wouldn't it be cool to restore the Escolta's Capitol Theater? I had thought it had been knocked down years ago, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Such a shame that the whole group of theaters in Manila's downtown have turned really seedy. With the proliferation of cheap hotels next to those cinemas, I'm sure these places have turned into dens for prostitution.

There's a picture of it in the Gateway box office picture. If you look above tkts signage all over to the right side of the picture, there is a boothlike structure with red "tkts" signage. That's the place in Times Square where people line up to buy discount Broadway show tickets. I believe it's on 45 street and Broadway.

Wow, I didn't know a lot of the old movie houses were still around. Is that the same Roxan Supercinerama? do all those neon signs still work?

Is that a new picture of New Frontier Cinema? I remember seeing "2001: A Space Odyssey" there back in '69 and also "Custer's Last Stand".

Yes, the old moviehouses (at least their shells and neon signs..) are still around.
And we do remember certain memorable movies that we watched in them.. I remember seeing Jaws on Christmas Day at Roxan, Star Wars at State, Salem's Lot at Maxim, Watari (Does anyone even remember this Japanese folk hero??) at Podmon, A Bridge Too Far at Ideal and the list goes on. Unfortunately, they are just about gone now. Ideal, State and Avenue were actually around pre-war, now only Avenue remains, and it's derelict. We have a then and now photo comparison of Avenue in the archived pages.

Anyway, I came across the photo below from a webpage made by one of the many children of American servicemen stationed at Clark Airbase in the 60s. It is actually a High School batch webpage. I had no idea whatsoever about where it might have been taken, but while going through my older files today, it suddenly struck me that it looked familiar after all..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Circa1900/webphil60s-3.gif

The photograph is dated about 1964 or 68. The man in the yellow shirt epitomizes the 60s fashion! Aside from the pastel green car, it could pass for the present.

The location is Tomas Mapua Street (formerly Miscericordia Street) corner Ongpin. It's the old wooden building (No one seems to have bothered to repaint it since the first picture was taken. Look closely, and one of the "V" symbols under the windows is still vaguely visible.) on the left that gave away its location. The luncheonette finally closed down for good sometime early this year. The white building (now pastel green) to its right seems smaller in the present photo because the newer building between them juts out further onto the sidewalk thus blocking part of the building from this angle, while the other white building has been demolished.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Circa1900/webmisc1.gif

And here's an idea of how much the road has risen over the years. The fire hydrant has been inconsiderately buried halfway into the sidewalk!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Circa1900/webmisc2.gif

Amazing that they just paved over the fire hydrant without removing it. They could at least have taken it off and sold it for scrap if they were just going to leavig it there taking up precious road space.

^^ I was supposed to write that before but got sidetracked.

Hi Lili, While we were waiting for our tour guide in front of Calvo buidling, I asked the security guard if I could use the restroom on the second floor. After taking a leak, I wandered around Calvo building for a while. That's how I discovered that the dark alleys, courtyard, why even the rooms that are almost the same as the shooting location of "In The Mood For Love."

Hello Wonderboy, I didn't think you will take that comment seriously to merit a response. Thanks for the clarification anyway. :)

It's amazing how certain parts of Binondo and Santa Cruz appear as if nobody's paid attention to them since 1960. If that's true then I'm surprised that more period pieces from that era aren't filmed there. I mean Wonderboy found a place that looked like it could have been from the 1960s Singapore of In the Mood for Love. Hmm. I wonder if producers ever think of this.

Wong Kar Wei in a couple of his movies has used Manila... For instance in Days of Being Wild (A Fei jing juen) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101258/) half the movie is set in the Philippines of the 1960s and I believe I recognized some shots from Santa Cruz.

Looking at that photo... There's a Florida Roasters restaurant. It's funny how they take any state in the US and add chicken to it.

Ok there's Kentucky.

But in the Philippines, there is Florida Roasters, Texas Chicken, and on Espana by the Welcome Rotunda they used to have New Jersey Chicken (I've never seen a chicken in NJ). Funny.

I think NJ Chicken has since closed down.

The many esteros of Manila used to be alive with commerce, as the Pasig itself was much used for the movement of goods and travel to outlying areas. The image below of the quayside by Calle Tetuan was taken from the short bridge that connects Dasmarinas Street to Plaza Sta. Cruz sometime near the turn of the century (..that's the OTHER turn of the century!).

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Circa1900/webtetuan1900s.gif

About a 100 or so years later, and Calle Tetuan's name still lives on. The same cannot be said of the estero that is not much better than a sewage pit. The boat in the photo is the property of the Philippine Maritime Institute located along the estero's opposite bank, whose marketing banners can be seen at the top of the present photo, adding more to the general clutter. I would suppose that the cadets would be extra careful when performing lifeboat drills from the davits mounted along the estero bank (if they still do..), as falling into the estero would not be at all pleasant!

There was this proposition by Paulo Alcazaren (architect/ columnist of The Philippine Star) around 2003 that the movie "The Great Raid" should be shot in Binondo, Sta. Cruz and Escolta district. The movie had a street scene complete with tranvias, horse drawn carriages and old houses that was shot somewhere in Vietnam or Thailand I think. Alcazaren pointed out that movie outfits with humongous budget should use our very own Sta. Cruz district for instance and 'restore' some of the old structures at the same time. Since the government doesn't have the money to restore heritage sites, let the movie companies do the job.

Perhaps the next time Columbia or Tristar produce a film set during prewar, they should use downtown Manila and restore everything to its original structure.

that's a calibration bar. that's used by scanner operators for colour fidelity purposes meaning that they can approach or approximate the original colour of the document or picture. the ruler is measurement purposes only, so they know that they have exact measurement of the document vis-a-vis with digital file.

Argh. My dad had a Torana in the 70s as a company car. So bulok! It must have been the rustiest piece of tin on the road.

That TV show shot was before my time. Was that woman emcee popular in the 70s and 80s as well?

The Torana was made by Holden, an Australian Co. There was a joke back then...
First guy: Gusto mong sumakay sa kotse ko?
Second guy: Anong kotse mo?
First guy: Holden
Secon guy: Holden Torana?
First guy: Hinde. holden' to da bus..(mimicking someone standing in the bus holding the ceiling handrails)

I have a feeling the woman is Nora Daza, the author of the NOra Daza's Cookbook. She used to have a cooking show in the 60's.

trakbayans were not that reliable, i remember my aunt bought one, can't remember if it was brand new or used, they must've used it for a short period of time then had to junk it.

There was a host of vehicles that came out during that period. Yes, the Ford Fiera, and how about the Toyota Tamaraw? I remember the Cimarron. Was that Honda, or Mitsubishi?

The San Juan Police also used the Sakbayans as their patrol vehicle.

 Corny yet funny joke. I'm corny anyway.

That doesn't look like a cooking show, though. I only got to see Nora Daza when banat na banat na mukha niya from plastic surgery. But what I watched then was the show of Sandy Daza and sometimes his sisters and Gloria Diaz will make special appearances and cook.

Isnt that a young helen gamboa?

Shin Dong Pa , lim eng beng uy magagaling iyon. I think you're right about his coaching, magaling sa korea. Lim Eng Beng napunta pa yata sa Utex , wasn't he on the first squad which won the PBA but was not a crispa toyota team?

Holden was a GM company. Actually derivatives from opel. GM asia used Australia as their base, but the Philippines was one of the key places for them as theyhad one of their first plants here with yutivo. We also had a vauxhall (opel badged in England) it was 3 speed manual lang. Then the torana came out , eventually we bought the Holden Premiere , Anyway they were pretty suckee cars so GM Phil. rebadged them again this time to Opel which did pretty well . In fact many pinoys have a good impression of the brand as the advertisement if you remember was like "Adam Opel started his car company in germany " or something like that .Until now I think that old Opel Rekord was a good looking car. Anyway too bad they (GM)screwed it up in the 90's with cars not tuned for the tropics.

Good Reliable cars , hmmm.

Well toyota was getting more popular, in fact the mitsubishi galant was quite well received from what I remember (sa kanila ba celeste or gm iyon). Anyway I seem to remember that mitsubishi was better regarded than toyota or something like that. Of course many older folk would not be caught dead in a japanese car (que horror). We ended up buying Ford Cortinas, then Ford Lasers (which ironically was a rebadged mazda essentially) before all the car companies left the Philippines leaving only mitsubishi and nissan (which also kinda died and quickly resurected). Anyway we digress.

As an adjunct to TV shows , do you remember their commercials some of them were quite good. 3d electric fan anyone!

So what were considered good, reliable cars back then? Fords?

I don't really know. Probably Toyotas. The taxis we used to ride in the sixties were still running well into the early eighties, when I left Manila. I remember my dad getting a different car every three years. The earlist one I remember was a British Hillman Zodiac, then a Austin Mini, then a Renault, then we got a Mercedes 190D, after that it was another Mercedes batman style.

We had this Toyota Corona Mark4 which had a refrigerator in the trunk but my dad didn't like it. I think it was a gas guzzler so he sold it. I think his favorites turned out to be the Ford Taunus. After he used the life out of his first one, he bought another one just like it. turns out the Taunus was the precursor to the Cortina which then gave birth to the present day Taurus.

So what were considered good, reliable cars back then? Fords?

the rally car of choice in those days was a ford escort. ford cortina was more of a mid range luxury sedan.

for government officials and barong-clad executives, the toyota crown was the standard then.

Times of Your Life

"Good morning yesterday,
You wake up, and time has slipped away
And suddenly it's hard to find
The memories you left behind
Remember, do you remember?

The laughter and the tears,
The shadows, of misty yesteryears,
The good times and the bad you've seen,
And all the others in between
Remember, do you remember the times of your life?

Reach out for the joy and the sorrow,
Put them away in your mind
The mem'ries are time that you borrow
To spend when you get to tomorrow

Here comes the setting sun (comes the setting sun)
The seasons are passing one by one
So gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?

Gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?
Of your life, of your life
Do you remember baby,
Do you remember the times of your life?

You might be correct there. That might be Helen Gamboa. Anyone else agree? I don't know what my dad was doing in that show. The reason I thought it was Nora Daza was because when my dad used to own a restaurant, he was featured on her TV show. I must have been around 5 or 6 yrs. old. I remember seeing him on TV being interviewed by Nora.

This looks like some Christmas type special, no?

I remember the Vauxhaul. My cousin bought one in 77. It was a '68 model.
He said he just bought a "voks'. Conversation went something like:

Cousin:I just bought a 'voks', wanna see it?
Us: Wow, a Volkswagen Brasilia?
Cousin(sheepishly): Hinde, voks-hol.

I'm with you on the Opel Rekord. I stil like the looks of that car. the Celeste was Mitsubishi's. It was rebadged here in the States as the Dodge Arrow.

I'm usually pretty good with music identification.

Yes Opel was a good brand. Medyo biased ako because at the time I was born, my dad had a 2 door Opel Kadett.

Why can't I imagine the tune of that song? All I keep coming up with in my head is the melody to that 70s disco song whose chorus also has "Do you remember"

I'm usually pretty good with music identification.

I guess you're talking about Earth, Wind, and Fire's "September".

I'll look for a midi file on the net para ma-refresh memory ng lahat.

I used to like those 70s Opels... the Kadetts, the Rekords and of course my favorite, the Manta.

I also liked the 70s Fords, especially the Cortina and the Escort. My dad used to have a 67 Mustang fastback which he sold to get an Escort. And then he sold that to get a Mazda Familia station wagon.

But my all-time favorite car in the 70s was the Ford LTD that my grandfather owned. He never used it because it was a gigantic car and was such a gas guzzler. Instead, he used his Mitsu Galant.

Remember the TV show Samurai and the Seven Swords?

Then later, there was Kung Fu with David Carradine. Yes, grasshopper.

The picture above does not look like the young Helen Gamboa. Maybe she is Nora Daza because Nora Daza had so much done on her face that she looked different later on.

Samurai and the Seven Swords? Hmm, is that the one with the white ninja, Shintaro Akikusa who always fought the black ninjas?

My father's hair had thick Tancho Tique. He used to carry me on his shoulders while I slept clasping his hair. Ang grasa. "Use TANCHO!!"

Hallmark Card or Kodak commercial with Mario Montenegro and daughter Hanilet Montenegro about to get married and Mario still viewing her as his little girl to the song the

Times of Your Life

"Good morning yesterday,
You wake up, and time has slipped away
And suddenly it's hard to find
The memories you left behind
Remember, do you remember?

The laughter and the tears,
The shadows, of misty yesteryears,
The good times and the bad you've seen,
And all the others in between
Remember, do you remember the times of your life?

Reach out for the joy and the sorrow,
Put them away in your mind
The mem'ries are time that you borrow
To spend when you get to tomorrow

Here comes the setting sun (comes the setting sun)
The seasons are passing one by one
So gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?

Gather moments while you may,
Collect the dreams you dream today
Remember, will you remember the times of your life?
Of your life, of your life
Do you remember baby,
Do you remember the times of your life?
Do you remember baby,
Do you remember the times of your life?

I think Jose Mari Chan composed this jingle.

My Lolo bought a Vauxhall and an Opel for his sons from the now defunct Northern Motors in UN Avenue. Both cars, btw, are related since they are under the GM banner.
