View Full Version : possible NET Line 4 - Underground?

Does anyone know about the old great central line that goes underneath nottingham? Nottingham could have its own underground line with probably not much more cost than building a tram line -

follow this link - clic on nottingham bit for more info

http://www.railwayarchive.org.uk/map/planIndex.php

it would start at weekday cross tunnel, and join up with line 1

then underground stations would have to be build at probably somewhere around:

weekday cross
crusader house/george street
victoria centre (overground or underground)
carrington
then several stops along sherwood rise to basford, where i guess it could link back up to line one.

they've got the tunnels built already seems such a waste not to use them,

map would look something like this:

any thoughts? im not sure about the feasability of this

Are lines 2 and 3 in with a decent chance of actually being buit? Will the government pull the plug on funding like they do with everything else? If so then any idea for a line 4 would be dreaming. It sounds like a good idea utilising existing railway tunnels to provide this service though. Lets hope the funding doesnt dry up on lines 2 and 3. Nottingham is the only British city I've visited with a standard of public transport I have actually genuinely been impressed with! Lets hope it continues to improve.

This was considered for NET1 but the Victoria centre has some underground stuff (foundations, carpark?) in the way which would need tunneling under making it too expensive. Would be cool though to have an underground, most of that tunnel is in reasonable condition.

Looking at the map, it seems a little pointless. The route it runs isnt that different to the current one is it?

That would be very cool, a bit like the underground pseudotram line in Budapest (though that was purpose built). There were murmurrings about whether to have Line2/3 go underground for a short period at the QMC to rise again somewhere next/on the University Campus OR whether to build a flyover. It will no doubt boil down to cost and I doubt the underground option would result in an underground station.

Where would Lines 2 and 3 go?

According to Net Phase two The Trams will flyover.

It will serve QMC at 2nd Floor Level.

I really hope these extensions get built. Unfortunately whilst Alistair Darling is around I'm not confident.

The whole of the Southside depends on the Tram Extensions. :(

_Future Broadmarsh Stop on extended Broadmarsh site.

_Nottingham Train Station redevelopment.

_City Centre expansion to the Meadows and Southside areas.

Trams are needed bad!

I can't see it very good. What is the link for the site?

"Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said while in Nottingham this week that a decision on expanding Nottingham’s tram system would be forthcoming “within months.”

so within months would be February (gone), March (going to go!), April, May...

I can't wait for the decision on the Tram extensions! There's no way he could withdraw funding from phase two.

i cant see why he would approve lines two and three if he's already cancelled metrolink expansion, merseytram leeds tram. I've got a bad feeling about this decision

I don't think NET would lose to Darling with such a positive masterplan for Tram Extensions.

Insignia - the DfT have said no announcement before the summer for Nottingham, very likely to be positive though I'd have thought.

Karate - Despite recent set backs, it looks like Manchester, Nottingham and Edinburgh will all start seeing some action over the next couple of years.

I hope so, for everyone not in the know see the Edinburgh Tram thread. To sum it up the Scottish Parliament have voted yes this week and will now recieve royal assent. TIE (Trams in Edinburgh) will then go to Edinburgh council to make their case, where it is likely to be accepted (as a majority of Edinburgh councilors are in favour). Construction is due to start next year.

This is one project Alistair Darling can't stop. :)

I dont think an underground line will ever happen - that work at Weekday Cross is purely so that they can build the Arts Centre right over the tunnel entrance.

This is how the local authorities envisage future extensions taking place:

May well be wishful thinking at this stage but I think the West Bridgford and Gedling (via Eastside and Waterside) are most likely for any Phase 3. The most obvious ommission is any extension to Long Eaton...no doubt because its not in Nottinghamshire. Bring on the city regions!

I oppose against any extensions to West Bridgford. It would be a waste of money. West Bridgford residents would do nothing but moan to NET and expense the service.

Extensions to Carlton (&Sneinton), Wollaton and Clifton long before any other extensions...

There would be very strong opposition if it was built through residential areas of West Bridgford. It would make more sense to go Clifton way anyway as there would be more demand
