DanteXavier May 3rd, 2008, 07:32 PM @ Dante Xavier, so you are not african!!!..Then what makes you interested t come to this section?????????
I dunno, I just like posting photos of some African cities that intrigue me is all.
I take it you are african-american.....
Technically, no. I'm a caribbean american. Both groups are usually black, but there are distinctions between the two.
I wish more of them could be like you because to be honest, africans and african-americans don't get along....I HAVE NOT ONE AFRICAN-AMERICA FRIEND....all my friends are either africans or whites.....I just don't socialize with african americans and I wish there where many more reasonable ones ..I don't mean to sound harsh but your people are just very primitive and dull ....they should take a page from your book....even sme wo are in college are just plain stupid....it is gd as you have an open mind and i wish other african americans culd have an open eye as you do,...only then will i wanna socialize ...(i am not saying all but MOST)
That's too bad. In either case, I hope you can resolve those feelings some day.
HOWEVER, these are great pictures..........apart from knowing the cities, are you familiar with the varius african cultures??????
Not particularly.

well if you wanna have a clue as to smoe african nations culture spend more of your skyscraperCity time at "the Oasis" section. Because pictures don't give you a single clue as to any african culture. Try going there and see what the africans are talking about in matters regarding social african issues

Alex Roney May 19th, 2008, 07:03 PM Dude lay off Dante, if he likes posting pictures in the photo gallery let him be. Please stop politicizing these photo threads.
Matthias Offodile May 19th, 2008, 07:18 PM nice, southernn africans have a unique way of building their roads...no wonder you didn't understand what I mentioned about what an african city should look like cos you are Jamaican., you had me thinking you where opposite or different...cool pics...the buildings are too small though but its nice..cities like Windhoek and gaborone and Libreville, will alwas remain QUIET (you know what i mean, i mean cities where people will not really be anticipated to visit) may be cause of their sizes, even if they where very developed, they will always remain unknown and quiet to the rest of Africans. Are people allowed to throw dirt on the streets, if not, do they get a fine??
DAMN, What should an African city look like? Windhoek is a true beauty where the rest of Africa can learn from A LOT: CLEAN CLEAN AND CLEAN:cheers:...this is of utmots importance!!!
Are people allowed to throw dirt on the streets, if not, do they get a fine??
this has something to do with awareness. Windhoek people prefer to live in a clean and healthy environment instead of being drowned in a city of waste and over-flowing gutters.
Mulema, please this is a picture thread, it has to remain a picture thread . These are the STRICT RULES!!!!
THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING
killerk May 19th, 2008, 07:23 PM The infrastructure is awesome, not a single pothole on the streets. Windhoek looks very much like a mid sized suburban North American city.

Very nice city, it's Africa's cleanest capital city...
Great job NAMIBIA!
popa1980 January 19th, 2009, 05:21 PM Very nice, but is it just me or do you think it looks boring and sterile?
StormShadow January 20th, 2009, 04:11 AM ^ Not the first time here someone had said that. It's a small city, and in my opinion, looks like the type of city where you can go out at a local park, catch rays and read your favorite book. Not much action in the city from my perspective, few restaurants here and there and bars, scatted with family owned retail stores. Large residential area, dominates that city, it appears.

even though the city seems sterile...i kinda like Namibia as a whole..i think as a whole the city is boring but if u have friends u can make it interesting by hitting the clubs and doing stuff...but it is the cleanest and one of the most beautiful cities in africa
Skyprince January 21st, 2009, 12:03 AM Windhoek seems quite sprawling with pretty high car-dependency , correct ?
Namibia is a huge country with low population after all.

Gravatai June 20th, 2009, 02:19 AM Maybe they could change Fidel Castro St. to Hitler St., Robert Mugabe St. to Prision St. and if there are more streets in Windhoek honoring dictators, assassins, idiots, useless people, I can help rename them to a more exciting name!

CF221 August 18th, 2009, 10:22 AM Wow, I was looking through the African forums when I got into this one!!! That's a great city! Windhoek has got to be the envy of its neighbors! Lots of green spaces, organized avenues and streets... and the cleanliness is a +. Love the German touch too... but there is only one bad thing about it... why in the world would you name an important street, going right to the CHURCH... fidel castro??????!!!!!! I mean why'd they have to put the name of a dictator that has empoverished, enslaved, and adoctrinated Cubans for half a century??? He's probably decadrupled the number of prisons in Cuba since 1959 and more political prisoners than ever... he has killed every Cuban's hope of communication with the outside world in order to manipulate them into thinking that Cuba is a world power!!! I mean he may have "helped" you fight for your independence... but he was not helping you as an act of friendship but to secure Cuba's resources after the fall of the Soviet Union!!! They could've named the street George Bush and his level of unhumainess would be far lower than fidel's! But oh well I guess people just choose to IGNORE... great city anyways...
Matthias Offodile August 18th, 2009, 11:37 AM nice updates!
Abidrovia August 18th, 2009, 12:36 PM It's a nice city but it kinda looks empty. It looks like a small town but with a few mid-rises/high-rises but it's still a very pleasant city.

Abidrovia July 14th, 2010, 12:44 PM Wow, very beautiful. It looks like an European, South African and American City all in one! Those hills back in the backround of those pics look like the ones in Los Angeles/Southern California in the USA.
:)
StormShadow July 14th, 2010, 08:36 PM Indeed, I like Namibian cities and towns a lot. Very clean and in orderly, the settlements appear to be well planned, the infrastructure well maintained, the shops and commercial areas well managed. Overall Namibia has nice housing too.
Trelawny July 15th, 2010, 02:10 AM So this country used to be apart of South Africa? They are stupid for getting rid of this beauty!
StormShadow July 15th, 2010, 05:32 AM There were reasons for that, political one's.
From an American perspective. Overall, the city reminds me of a medium to smaller sized American city like Provo or Ogden somewhere semi-arid which also features forested areas. It also reminds me a lot of South Africa, in particular the western areas of it.
lejune September 1st, 2010, 10:36 AM yes stormshadow it gets pretty hot over here in Namibia (but also cold in winter). in south it could go up to 40 degree celsius. As for rain you can get plus minus 300 in the north east and less as you go further south and coastwards. Talking about the coast there is alot of fog but come december its nice and warm.
kgl September 1st, 2010, 12:51 PM Nice pics. I hope to visit Namibia, in near future.

fozzy January 18th, 2011, 02:15 AM Windhoek look like a beautiful city and i would love to visit one day. Looks very clean and organised and i love the varied mix of architecture.
CologneOujda January 18th, 2011, 02:43 PM The german street names look so out of place. But beautyful city.
Frankk January 22nd, 2011, 05:46 PM So the famous church there is just a tourist site and not active?
It is called the Christus Kirche. It is a historic landmark and also serves as church with a specific schedule. It was built to commemorate peace during the war of the Germans and Namibians.
evany January 27th, 2011, 01:26 AM A nice small, dessert city.
Why in good's name did they ruin the city's clean image with streets named after villains and idiots? Geez, I wouldn't want to live on Robert Mugabe ave!

skytrax January 28th, 2011, 03:23 PM It's not the kind of city that I would choose to live, cause is to calm for me. But it's definitely beautiful and I'm pretty sure is the cleanest city in Africa.

musiccity January 29th, 2011, 12:22 AM Windhoek is too pretty! I definatly wouldnt mind living here, I like the calm, clean look to it. I dont know if I would like to live in a big, wild, hectic city like Lagos (no offense Lagosians, Lagos has made huge accomplishments and theres a lot to be proud of.)
Btw, I'm making another Namibia thread and this one will be the best I've made (hopefully.)

Windhoek is not calm. It is just like any other city. The only day Windhoek is calm is on Sundays. Apart from that, it is a pretty busy city:). But I understand what you are saying. My hometown, Luderitz is very calm. Windhoek is actually one of my least favourite cities. I prefer the coastal cities of Namibia.
musiccity January 29th, 2011, 01:23 AM Well, the word I was looking for was pleasant, Windhoek is VERY pleasant [looking] compared to the big grungy American cities I'm used to. But Ive never been to Windhoek so I can only assume from the pictures, but I wasnt saying it wasnt busy. Coastal Namibia definatly has more appeal to the traveller and Swakopmund and Luderitz have spectacular architecture.

Rodgerbeu July 8th, 2011, 01:57 AM Hi Musiccity, it's the new Indepencence Memorial Museum and it will open in 2013. It will be the tallest building in Windhoek and of course Namibia, not only due to the fact it's on a hill, but also it will be 30 storeys. It's quite massive for Namibia, but I'm just happy my country is moving forward.

Xvr July 14th, 2011, 08:38 PM Hello people from Windhoek,
I'm from Mexico, from a city called León, and days ago I was searching in Google Earth a place on Earth with similar conditions as the valley where the city i live in is located (Bajio).
El Bajio is a valley in Mexico located in the latitude 21°N, 1700-1850 mosl (meters over sea level) and a precipitation around 400mm - 800mm.
It happend that I found on Namibia, (to be more accurate, around Windhoek) the most similar conditions around the globe than we have in El Bajio.
Thus I opened a thread of Windhoek in the mexican forum, cause we are comparing the way you interact with the environment to the way we do, and differences in urbanism, and things related...
I would like you to post images of the city, landscapes, and information about principal industrial and agricultural activities.
The link to the thread is the next one:

Rodgerbeu October 10th, 2011, 05:15 AM I notice a lot of German street signs in these pictures, I thought the German heritage would have been forgotten, Namibia hasn't been a German colony since the first world war.
Hi Christius Alerius...Windhoek, Swakopmund and Luderitz still have very strong German architecture around plus many of the street names, town names, hotel names, etc. are in German. We really never got rid of any of the german influences and the colonial styles, thus you will see many german statues and street names still around. Namibians always saw this as a way of remembrance to what happened in the past and it is part of our history.
Eddy Nicolay October 14th, 2011, 09:44 PM I've been so damn far from this forum. Sorry guys. Here's my contribution. Taken just 30 minutes ago. Delight yourselves :D

slytheron December 12th, 2011, 05:22 PM I've noticed some of you complaining about the street names, but remember that you're more likely to find names like "Fidel Castro" on the street signs rather than "John F. Kennedy" but it's for a good reason. Do you think Namibians are fools to name their streets as such? Look up their history and see where their support came from during their difficult colonial past, then you'll know why their streets bear the names of "Villains". Then tell me who the real villains are. It's the same in SA and Kenya and all over Africa. Discern things my friends don't just look and see. Oh btw, check out my city, Nairobi!!!
slytheron December 12th, 2011, 05:34 PM Wow, I was looking through the African forums when I got into this one!!!
Maybe you should find out what the streets were named before? Now why would someone change the name of a street from a nice German name to an African one? Mhmmm I wonder....
Diggerdog December 13th, 2011, 12:44 AM CF221, you obviously have a major issue with Fidel, but the fact is the Cubans were the only military force in the Angolan War that could compete with the South African military. Up until they arrived, we as the SADF were almost unopposed in Angola, even with their Russian equipment and advisors.
So Swapo and the current independant Namibia owe them quite a debt of gratitude.
And you say that the Cubans came to fight for selfish reasons - what do you think the Germans were doing in Namibia before SA defeated them there in WW1?
Most of the streets were named things like 'Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse' and the like beforehand, even though the Germans commited some unspeakable atrocities against the Herero and other native tribes.
Actually Fidel was involved in Africa for decades as part of his ideaology - that was more the reason for Cuban involvement than resources. The Russians and Chinese were there at that time for resources and political influence.
Anyway, it was all quite interesting and complicated, not least because South Africa was heavily backed by the US and western powers during the war (in secret, of course, they couldn't be seen to support the apartheid government.)
kiligoland December 13th, 2011, 06:42 AM ^^^^ i love windhoek, windhoek :cheers1:

Actually it makes perfect sense - almost all the modern infrastructure in Namibia was built by South Africa, or South Africans and SA companies. From roads to suburb layouts and electricity - to the shops and the products in the shops - not to mention that SA dominates there economically and socially - for example, pay tv is South African DSTV.
Plus the big number of South Africans living in Windhoek (and most naturalized Namibians are of SA origin.)
Half my extended family lives in Windhoek - they have Namibian citizenship or residency now, but are all South African.
So there you go...

Hi Diggerdog...Thanks for your input, which is part correct and part incorrect. Did you ever see or visited Namibia before independence. If not...SA did the least possible for and in Namibia, SA exploited our natural resources and what was given back was so little, you don't & can't even see those buildings and infrastructure erected by SA, anymore. I grew up in Windhoek, we had 2 skyscrapers then, the CDM and Kalahari Sands Hotel buildings and built by SA. That what is there now, is what Namibians build with their own hands and own money. SA stole so much from us Namibians and in return gave so little back. So please get your facts sorted...70%, you are so misinformed. The fact of the citizenship...this incorrect and every Namibian born before independence, have the right to apply for SA citizenship as we were one country for over 70 years. The main reason for the close relationship between Namibia & SA,today is due to the history, Afrikaans and mainly the N$ is link to SAR. The days when we had to endure the SA look, is far gone, what you see now, is what Namibians made themselves.

Diggerdog April 26th, 2012, 07:04 AM Yes actually, I have lived in Namibia before, during and after independance.
Firstly, I am not mistaken.
I said most of the infrastructure was built by SA and it was.
I am sure in recent times Namibia has added new buildings and suburbs and other things - but the fact remains that Namibia's very good national roads, highways, Walvis Bay Port, rail links all were built by SA.
I know there is this thinking that 'SA did nothing for Namibia' - and that is to be expected seeing as they were the occupier - but it is not true.
About citizenship - when I talked about 'naturalized' - I meant there are a lot of Namibians that are of SA origin, but now have Namibian citizenship, thats all.
And dont kid yourself - Namibia relies very heavily on South Africa - to the point where it is unhealthy. I know Namibia are trying to diversify away from SA, but for the moment they are dependant on South Africa.
90% of imports are from South Africa, and around 65% or exports!
Not too mention electricity supply.
The banking sector is totally dominated by South African banks, with FNB and Standard bank being the biggest.
Then we have supermarkets and other food chains etc.
So, while it sounds all very patriotic to say SA 'gave you nothing', it is absolutely incorrect.
Diggerdog April 26th, 2012, 07:16 AM Just an extract from a site called 'Namibian roads in history'...
Phase Five from 1965 to 1987
The period from 1965 to date can be characterised by the consolidation and uplifting of Namibia's roads network to one of the finest in Africa
In 1952, Namibia had just over 10.000 km of trunk and main roads. There were no surfaced roads and very few suitable bridges. Since that time a remarkable development has taken place. The length of proclaimed trunk, main and district roads, the three roads classifications for which the state is responsible as far as construction and maintenance are concerned, has risen between 1952 and 1986 from a little more than 10.000 km to 41.572 km.
4. The Future of Namibia's Roads after Independence
Namibia has more kilometres of road per head of population than any other country in Africa and maybe in the world.
So - Namibia has one of the finest road networks in the world thanks to South Africa. And this is indeed true, if you have ever driven on them - they are beautiful.
Not bad for a country that 'gave you nothing' hey?
