A nice small, dessert city.
Why in good's name did they ruin the city's clean image with streets named after villains and idiots? Geez, I wouldn't want to live on Robert Mugabe ave!

Excellent photos, SE9!
Windhoek is such a nice looking small city! I wonder what is there to do in such a small and isolated city.

I could only imagine the weather there is very hot. I wonder how much rainfall that Windhoek receives yearly.

Yes, it's a very nice city. I'm American, I really like Namibia, also South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Angola. Those areas interest me, geographically speaking. Who knows, maybe one day I will live in Namibia, interesting place. ;)

Possibly one of the cleanest cities on earth! I can think of just Singapore and some other japanese cities matching this cleanliness.

Windhoek is really beautiful but I wonder what is there to do in such a small city? Are there any festivals or events held there?

Slodi, as far as Angola is concerned: yes, Angola cities are different, no doubt about that ... but which cities look beautiful after 30 fucking years of war??? Angola needs some time, construction is ongoing but wounds are still bleeding. That is normal to my mind.

Windhoek is squeaky clean a lot of cities of its size in Germany even look "dirty" and run-down if you try to compare both.

Everything looks in its right place in Windhoek. I've heard that Namibia is one of the most unequaly distributed income per capita countries in the world after Brazil and India. What's the income per capita in Windhoek? Is this inequaulity between cities and countriside or there are huge differences in the same city?

I take offence to such an ignorant statement. Most African understand the role Castro played in the independence struggle of Namibia and South Africa, that's why many streets all over Africa are named after him.

It is always a pleasure to look at photos of Windhoek. Everything looks clean, orderly, neatly structured and efficiently run (traffic lights that work, well paved roads and innnercity highways, a central business district with no run-down houses, old and well preserved buildings, manicured gardens, nice shops etc.).

The only thing what sometimes disturbs me at times is that it lacks a certain "Africanness/African soul/spirit".....but Namibia is still a very young independent country:)

StormShadow

It looks African to me, southern African, the landscape does it for me. The colonial German architecture gives it that so called central or northern "European" look and it's blended with the modern structures, which reminds me of some of western U.S cities, when speaking of it's modern structures. It also has that "Gaborone" look to it in my book. It's also a very small city.

BTW Matt check your PM.

Well, I think it's soul/spirit is ok the way it is...it has that certain Southern African look that fits it, and the northern European style architecture acts as a great attraction to visitors.

Matthias people here are too narrow minded....the whole country has a fked up mentality....world cup 2010 will show parts of africa to the world they never seen b4.

Bist du zufälligerweise Deutscher? Würde dein feuriges Interesse für Namibia erklären! Ich glaube in Deutschland wäre man froh über so eine adrette, putzige kleine und saubere Stadt!:)

Well, to answer your question. The "German" community in Namibia is still strong (official figures hover around 20 000-30 000). But those people are already Nambians of German descent! For all I know there is a German newspaper published there, too! And some people speak or at least understand German. Do you feel like traveling there?

Btw, German media and travel agencies in Germany have somehow "rediscovered" Namibia in recent years!

Pretty much. Botswana, namibia, South Africa-these are probably the most developed portions of the continent today if we'regoing on a regional basis.

Here are some of the pictures. I started from Katima Mulilo near the border of Angola to the North, Zambia to the East, Zimbabwe South East and Botswana on the South.

Although I like looking at Windhoek and other towns in Namibia, I wonder why some people do not want to show the true Namibia. Where are the slums where the vast majority of people still live??? This is just a facade of a priviledged few (mostly white). Namibia figures among the most unequal societies in the world!
Africa can´t afford another Zimbabwe in a few years time which only means more plight and despair.....

1. "Vast majority" is an exaggeration. Only 28% of Namibians live in poverty, so it isn't realistic to say that a "majority" of people live in slums. Maybe a few too many do, more than there should be, sure, but a majority? No.

2. Yes, whites still hold a lot of wealth in namibia-but like SA, there is a rapidly growing black middle class.

3. I to am wary of another Zimbabwe-South Africa and namibia are the most likely future Zimbabwes if they keep going the way they are, although things could turn around before then. We can hope...Mugabe has got to die soon anyhow.

4. You want a Namibian slum in Windhoek, here you go.

I dunno why you're asking-you get really pissed when anybody shows some less than stellar pics of Naija...why would you want to see bad pics of namibia?

Well, whatever, you've got them.

First of all, thanks for showing this side of Namibia!

The reason why I am asking is because I felt "attacked" and misunderstood by some members on the Luanda forum ´cos I was told to paint an unrealistic picture of Luanda (although I am fully aware of the other reality on the ground) while other countries in Africa get "hugs and kisses" although poverty is still rampant over there, too. Everybody enjoys pissing on Nigeria, efforts to paint a more rosy picture of Angola are not appreciated (although the country needs some positive marketing despite its massive social flaws and inequalities; furthermore it takes hours to look for good and up-to-date photos on the net)
So when we want to be fair or give a more "comprenhensive" insight into African cityscapes, we should also show some bad sides of beautiful African cities like Windhoek, Nairobi or Cape Town and Durban. But I don´t see anything negative presented on those pages. That´s what infuriates me! I am told that I would only present a "3 km radius of a city" while others do the same on other threads. Many African cities are pissed upon (in particular Nigerian ones) while others are praised to heaven!

namibia is a 2nd world country.

Correct-on the Human Development Index, namibia's score for living standards fall in the medium development category-on the HDi, high correlates to first world, medium is 2nd, and low development is third, so namibia is a 2nd world country at this point.

but after seeing all these pics (and other ones like Luderitz and Swak....[can´t remember the name]) I want to visit so bad Namibia, it's one of my top destinations

The cities look so clean and organized...I just can't understand why there is so much poverty. I saw the windhoek slums (in pics) and it was rough but didn't look like for ex like...Kibera...
In my city there are also slums, like in any other big city.

what's the country situation?!

Thx for the pics!

I heard in our local radio station that the authorities in Namibia don't compromise when coming to cleanliness. Its beutiful and clean and to me its size doesn't matter.

Mogabe and Castro assisted the opressed people of Namibia during hard times and I think its good dthat they have decided to name those avenues afte them.

Namibia: Low-Cost Housing Model Launched

A local construction company, Trans Atlantic Enterprises last Thursday launched a new and revolutionary method of building low-cost housing on a large scale using the Kavango block brick.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Simwanza Simenda, launched the project at the Habitat Research and Development Council in Katutura; two model low-cost structures were exhibited.

Simenda said the Kavango block brick wall system offers a solution to the ever-increasing housing shortage facing Namibian people and the SADC region by making housing affordable to those previously excluded for economic reasons.

"The Kavango block brick building system is clear evidence that Namibian companies such as Trans Atlantic Enterprises are working towards achieving the country's full industrialisation in line with Vision 2030. This building system is evidence that there are ways of reducing construction costs without compromising quality, thus offering our people dignified housing.

Just because people are poor should not deny them a dignified existence," the deputy PS said.

Simenda also said the building system offers employment creation opportunities for unskilled labour.

"This building method offers an ideal opportunity to bring about self help building projects to the rural areas of our country. The company has introduced training programmes through institutions such as the Windhoek Vocational Training Centre. By training our people in this manner build together housing projects can be implemented throughout the 13 regions of our country," he said.

The deputy PS also welcomed the low-cost building system, which is also aimed at providing countless opportunities for the local manufacturing sector.

"Most franchised licence operators within our borders are owned by foreign companies. The Kavango block brick patent, being Namibian, will mean that other countries buying into its licence will be ploughing back revenue into Namibia. The reverse currently exists with many foreign franchises operating in the country," he said.

Simenda urged other Namibian companies to emulate Trans Atlantic Enterprises in finding solutions to bring about socio-economic changes in Namibia, Africa and the rest of the world.

"It is great to see a passion and commitment towards striving for solutions in order to make a difference in our country.

It is clear that the Kavango block brick construction system can contribute significantly towards the uplifting of our people.

"I value the commitment towards striving for solutions with a view to increasing the availability of housing," he said.

He said there was need to adopt new technologies in an ever-changing world.

"Change is inevitable and we as Namibians need to constantly examine alternatives that can bring about more dignified living standards to all Namibians. This system indicates that we have what it takes to set new standards and be an example to our SADC neighbours and the rest of the world," he said.

Trans Atlantic Enterprises owner, Heinrich Schroeder, said the Kavango block brick is purely a Namibian technology patented internationally.

He said the new method is not only 40 percent faster than standard construction systems but can save 25 percent on current conventional building methods.

"Due to its diversity the Kavango block brick, an interlocking type of block, can replace wooden framed walls as well as metal and asbestos framed walls in houses and buildings up to 10 floors high. Less mortar and time will be used by way of this building method," Schroeder said.

how cold does it get in the winter? ever snow?

This is from Wiki:

Windhoek is situated in a semi-desert climatic region. Days are mostly warm with very hot days during the summer months, while nights are generally cool. The average annual temperature is 19.47°C, which is high for a site at such a high altitude on the edge of the tropics[1]. This is mainly due to the prevalence of a warm northerly airflow and the mountains to the south, which shelter the city from cold southerly winds.

The winter months of June, July and August usually experience very little rain. Minimum temperatures range between 5°C (41°F) to 18°C (64°F). Nights are usually cool, although the temperature seldom drops below 0°C, and it almost never snows. Days are usually hot to very hot, varying from a maximum of 20°C in July to 31°C in January.

Mean annual rainfall is around 360mm, which is too low to support crops or gardens without heavy use of watering. The natural vegetation of the area is scrub and steppe. Droughts are a regular occurrence; dry and wet years run through a cycle that lasts around 10 years.

Here's an article on it:

http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=nw20080204133305586C498738

South Africa's power crisis may already have damaged economic growth, even though the country's mines have bounced back after electricity shortages brought production to a halt.

The longer it takes Eskom to boost energy output for industry, the greater the chances that 2007 could have marked the end to four years of brisk economic growth at around five percent.

South Africa's gold and platinum mines, the lifeblood of the economy, stopped work for five days last month as Eskom imposed rolling power cuts across the country.

Many analysts have already factored the impact into their forecasts of gross domestic product growth.

Even if mines make up for lost output, Eskom's plans to ration power could cut 2008 growth down to four percent at most, said Bureau for Economic Growth economist Pieter Laubscher.

"At the moment the number that we are working on is a 3,9 percent baseline forecast for GDP growth. A worse case scenario would be about 3,4 percent," Laubscher said.

"This is mainly the mining effect... The baseline assumption is that we recover in the second quarter, that the mines sort of recover even with the rationing of electricity consumption," he added.

Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said last week risks to growth appeared on the downside, with the global slowdown threatening a spillover effect on South Africa.

This was likely to be reinforced by the prevailing electricity supply disruptions, Mboweni said. But he ruled out the possibility of a recession in Africa's biggest economy.

The electricity woes could also hamper South Africa's preparations to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which officials hope will bring in huge amounts of cash.

Harshest on mining, manufacturing

Elna Moolman, an economist at Barnard Jacobs Mellet Securities, said the effect would be harshest on mining and manufacturing, where high energy consumption made it difficult to use alternative sources such as generators.

"The impact on other sectors will likely be more indirect, through the consequent slowdown in economic growth and demand for their products. We are also concerned about the possible impact on the trade and current account deficits," said Moolman.

The current account deficit stood at 8,1 percent of GDP in the third quarter of 2007 and analysts believe that worries about growth could affect investors' perceptions of South Africa's ability to finance the shortfall.

The electricity woes would have their most visible effect on growth in the first quarter of 2008, which could be less than half the 4,5 percent annualised expansion in the previous quarter, Deutsche Securities economist Michael Biggs said.

The shortages have coincided with a slowdown in consumer demand. This has been the main driver of growth in recent years, but is waning as households feel the pinch of interest rate increases totalling 400 basis points between June 2006 and December last year to stem inflation.

"I would say that of the 5 percent growth rate that we had over the past four years, a big chunk of that was a very strong consumer boom," said the BER's Laubscher.

"The consumer boom has come to an end and we're not going to see the same sort of momentum any time soon, given the limited scope to cut interest rates going forward," he said.

But some analysts such as Citigroup's Jean-Francois Mercier believe there is a chance of minimising the blow to growth.

Mercier noted Eskom's plans to revive old power stations to boost short-term capacity, and that Brazil had overcome its own power crisis in 2001-02.

"But downside risks prevail, in particular that investment and, in turn potential growth, suffer," he said.

"A long-term policy response will be required to prevent the problem from recurring over the coming years, with a more significant negative impact on economic growth and investor sentiment."

This power issue can cause an economic issue, and any economic issue in south africa will affect the rest of southern africa to. Places like Botswana and Namibia but power from south africa to, so that's an even bigger issue. Zambia has been having serious power issues for some time, but for places like Botswana, South Africa itself and Namibia(which are used to stable power supplies and decent levels of development) this is a problem.

The fact that it is so clean and well organized says a lot to. A number of African cities have nice landscapes, but few are this well maintained and put together.

Yes, that too of course. If I recall I mention that many times before, many other individuals here did also, it's very noticeable. If you notice the other Namibian city galleries that are placed on this fora section, the other urban centers have similar quality. Thanks for the recent images also, very nice update.

Yes, Windhoek and Gabs have some very good images recently. Not so long ago it was difficult to put together threads for these 2 cities, the images were limited and typical. I would like to see more of the residential neighborhoods sometime in the future.

Why do you wanna see the poor sides oF africa. WE WANT TO SEE THE DEVELOPMENT AND BEATIFUL PARTS. I HAVE SEEN SOME PICTURES HERE ON SOME AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND ALL THEY SHOW ARE POOR PARTS IT LEADS PEOPLE TO BELEIVE THAT THE WHOLE OF THAT COUNTRY IS POOR. NO WE WANNA SEE THE BEAUTIUL PARTS. This city seems to be very unafrican. Btw, English, German and Afrikaans, which language amonst those three is mostly spoken?

What is the most spoken language by the blacks? Is it Oshags?
But the country has magnificient natural landscapes.
Its deserts are really something worth seeing

StormShadow

According to CIA-FactBook
English 7% (official), Afrikaans common language of most of the population and about 60% of the white population, German 32%, indigenous languages 1% (includes Oshivambo, Herero, Nama)

The city has it's colonial German architecture and it's modern "universal" architecture styles which one would find in many modern cities, there are a few structures of regional "African" design which are found in residential areas, there are some images a few post back if I recall.

An african city would look like more AFRICAN CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS ON THE STREETS. You are white so you cannot undersatnd.

I gather for many the German colonial architectural structures stick out the most in a number of cities. Namibian urban centers are small and the colonial structures would stick out especially if the settlement didn't receive a lot of recent construction to override other designs. Like I said, Namibian cities have a fusion of 3 architectural styles from my observation.

I COMPLETELY agree with you, Mulema, it looks like some random small German city somewhere. This city actually isn't much different from Germany either, except being a more poor.

1. The whites run this city [economically]
2. the architecture is similar to Germany
3. This country is preety much reliant on Germany.

There is nothing to see in Windhoek, theres no skyscrapers, I think the tallest thing is like 9 floors or a church or something. This city isn't known for anything, the only reason why I even remember this city exists is because of its weird name, "Windhoek".

BTW: There are functioning places in africa that have a strong cultural indentity, Gabon, Ghana and Equatorial Guineau are a few of them.

SO WHAT? its just like SA things take time to change but the fact is that the city is one of if not the most well kept city in our continent and we should appreciate and be proud of what they got, it took me time to appreciate SA for what it is but the fact is with all their shortcomings they are still african cities and thats what matters. more importantly we should copy a whole lot from them on how to run a city. last year nairobi councilors and town clerk went to windheok to get more knowledge on how to preserve a city's history and now nairobi has some buildings marked as historical and more monuments erected also it is now one of the clean cities of africa. THE GLASS IS NOT HALF EMPTY BUT RATHER HALF FULL thats how i got to appreciate SA

LABUJA, YOU ARE THYE ONLY ONE WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY. I DON'T WANNA GET TOO DETAILED BECAUSE I DON'T WANNA SPOIL THIS THREAD BUT I THINK WINDHOEK'S BULDINGS ARE TOO GERMAN, CONTROLLED BY GERMANS, AND LACKS AN ARICAN IDENTITY
EVEN THOUGH SOUTH AFRICA IS DEVEOPED AS COMPARED TO OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES, I STILL WOULD ALWAYS FEEL IN AFRICA ANYTIME IN SOUTH AFRICA, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A VERY STRONG TRADITIONAL AFRICAN IDENTITY.

MY COUSIN WENT TO WINDHOEK AND FELT AS THOUGH HE WAS IN GERMANY.

THE CITY LOOKS LIKE A REGULAR GERMAN CITY

IF WINDHOEK HAD SOME AFRICAN IDENTITY IN IT, I THINK MORE PEOPLE WILL WANNA VISIT THIS CITY . PEOPLE ONLY GO TO NAMIBIA TO VISIT ITS DESERTS AND INDIGINEOUS PEOPLE.

IF I TRAVEL TO NAMIBIA, I WON'T BE INTERESTED IN VISITING WINDHOEK BUT THE DESERT. THERE REALLY IS NOTHING TO SEE IN THIS CITY

Those structures are German-Namibia's colonial influence. The architecture don't look bad at all in my opinion, it's the older structures of the city which are from the colonial period and a few of the recent structures which appears to be influenced. Viewing the images I don't imagine Germany at all, sure it's influences but I picture Windhoek first, it's a distinct city. Other structures look "universal" which we would find in plenty of modern cities around the globe. It's residential areas are similar but with a Southern African twist, a single family 1 to 2 floor dwelling. The city is clean, it's organized and it appears very safe, it's a well managed settlement. Sure it's a small city which is certain it has less action than larger cities. It does not need a cluster of large skyscrapers just to showboat with it's population size. The city appears harmonious in my opinion.

Mulema, didn't you just say on another thread you enjoy the Portuguese architecture in Mozambique ? I'm certain you'll like it's structures in Angola and Cape Verde too and it's influences, many are quite noticeable too. Are you being preferential ?

Windhoek and other Namibian cities for being small urban centers receives a lot of positive feedback from visitors here. Perhaps they all enjoy the character of the city along with it's well managed and noticeable atmosphere and cleanliness.

We should therefore buildoze windhoek and replace it all with shacks. that should make lagbuja and mulema happy. then the whole continent can look like abaroghaniazia

Very well said, this will extinguish one of the last flames of hope in Africa..at least Windhoek desserves to be called a livable african city: it is spotlessly clean:cheers:, something which seems to be an unrealisable task for 75% of African cities, it is well-run, don´t know many cities that are as well-run as Windhoek in Africa

... In short, the city is something that his "Abaroghaniazia" will most likely NEVER EVER become!

Dante, don't mind Matthias the idiot is just trying to fuel up more fights, Instead of him to ignore, he continuously attacks. Well I personally don't have a problem with him doing so but his nagging is so funny and boring to everyone. We should all ignore this cry baby and continue posting the pictures.

Attention, never mind, Truth to be told is Mulema, ignore his comments!! it is not worth paying heed to them, he is just here to provoke! Mulema once said that he wants "to tell the truth about Africa", this "new" guy who is Mulema is now called "truth to be told", this is no coincidence. He has taken up a new screename but his motives are still evil..probabyl even more evil becasue he got banned!

The same troll with another screename, so let´s keep on posting pictures and whatever he says, it should dissolve into thin air!!! Igorance - although it is hard - will be the only weapon to fight this battle of words! my emotions carry me away to often but there is always more harm caused with it..IGNORANCE is simply the best.

I have to agree, I heard Windhoek was an extremely boring city. Head straight out to the Namib desert and the skeleton coast.

One thing about Windhoek is the clean streets. I spoke to my one Namibian collegue yesterday (he is damara). He said that the streets are so clean that you feel guilty to even think about littering. Because then everyone will know that you are the one who threw the rubbish!

If only other African(and Caribbean, for that matter!) cities could follow such an example...

Beautiful city, but Africa doesn't need a few cities here and there that are well maintained. Otherwise we just have "Intra Europes/Americas" and people flocking in at the expense of the city and compromising it's development.

Great Photos Dantexavier

yes, a lot of African cities can learn a few things about cleanliness from Windhoek. Even their fruit & veg market
looks very clean.
