View Full Version : Your Own Stadium Design
pompeyfan April 15th, 2012, 12:23 PM So I decided to start my stadium all over again, making a new version, with slight project changes and adding much more details. The stand in both ends are now sthraight and consequently closer to the pitch. The interior is almost ready, exterior and roof still to be done.

Also, my sketchup is starting to feel the weight of a big design. Is this a problem of my computer, or it happens with everyone? Also, is there anyway to fix it?
Make sure you are using layers to minimise the workload on your computer. There is no single fix, everyone (even me) feels that once their model gets too big.
Nikola10 April 15th, 2012, 01:36 PM guys i really dont care what everyone say at least he made a stadium similar and let just give him a break he not so good at it but let him have time to build and everyone did not started so good and he a new guy that starting to make a stadium you never know what happen in weeks or month time he might make the MCG stadium in every detail so be happy... for me i am so happy about his project keep going improve it it your project you can do whatever you want to do....
MFJones April 15th, 2012, 01:43 PM Much much better now. However, i think the stadium on the pic has 2 tiers on the main stand and you should also make stairs on the standing areas. But still, much much better then the first try

The two tiers is just one with a guardrail to separate the two sections, with a lil' path for the fans to walk. It is possible to remove it without serious problems, so I decided to do it because it caused some visibility problems. The stairs in the standing areas, doors and the seating are whats missing in the interior.
gll25 April 16th, 2012, 05:34 AM Sorry for posting too much my stadium, without doing a lot of changes, but I really need feedback on this, since its my first stadium for real :)
Added stairs to the standing areas, and started to work on the exterior.

MFJones April 16th, 2012, 09:16 PM giry great models and nice design. why dont you take part in the new competition for a small stadium? and instead of screen shots you could use 2d exports (much better quality, same time needed). you do it like this file>export>2d graphic and then just save it under the name you want.

gll25 April 17th, 2012, 12:05 AM Well, I decided to change the exterior a lot, since I didnt like the original glass structure, and I'm much more satisfied now. The standing area has no cover to reduce the costs and because the tickets there are very cheap. I believe this is ready, since my PC apparently cant handle the weight of seats in the stadium. I know its not the best stadium, but it was a good first try and I liked both doing it and the results :).

Hi mate.
How many people will your stadium hold? Particularly the end and west stand? Only reason I ask is that could get very crowded on matchdays, people heading for the wrong turnstiles and especially if the line for the west stand turnstile gets too long.

For that matter, I like your stadium entrance gates, and think this stadium don't have big attendance.
Can we see more from your stadium?

The End stand's capacity is only 1k (9 rows) so its not a big problem, there are 10 turnstiles where the crowd can enter to this stand 'cause the otherside has 5 turnstiles too. In my city's stadium there are only 8 turnstiles for 8k spectators. :)
to giry: i've just started to work on the main stand which has 25 rows (cap: 4k), so photos are coming soon...
The stadium' capacity will be ~10k. And the land where i designed is the PMFC's stadium hahah , thats why the end stand has low cap.

artet May 2nd, 2012, 05:06 AM Hi, can somme one help me please by telling me where to find stadium seat textures or how to make them?
I use Gimp and 3ds max

What kind of seats are we talking about? 2D seats or 3D seats?
Stadium seats are made of plastic, some metal parts, and vip seats can be made of leather. For plastic you don't need any texture, for metal you only need textures for brushed metal, and for leather you can go to my blog and download the vray leather materials free sample I posted (lowres seamless textures though) and use the bumpmaps inside or google for leather.
It also depends on your stands... are they 3d or 2d ramps like danielbeier's pepsi arena?
I also use 3ds max and for a stadium of mine I did a chair in full 3D then i rendered it in front and top views and edited the resulting images in photoshop to do my textures. Then just made 2 planes in max, 1 for the chair backrest and one for the seat and used the textures done in photoshop on both planes, and this was the result...

achwel May 2nd, 2012, 09:53 AM Hi artet,
:omg: they look really great I would love to learn that, you got a tuturial how to make them?
I am making a stadium mod for a game (cities xl) but I can only use 8000 triangles and thats not much, so I have to use more textures like the pepsi arena indeed, so I would love to learn both ( the chairs like you done and like the pepsi arena) here s a link of what I made (my name there s axel)
http://xlnation.net/content/stadium?page=4
I learned 3ds all by my self so I am just a beginnen, but i love using 3 ds
artet May 2nd, 2012, 04:55 PM Artet what are the dimensions of a row?
If you mean the depth, I use a value of 80cm. The hight is variable, from 5 to 5 steps it changes, but ranges between 20cm (first 5 rows) and 48cm (3rd tier top 5 rows).
stefan2000 May 2nd, 2012, 04:56 PM How you can make an detailed stadium in 3ds max?
stefan2000 May 2nd, 2012, 04:57 PM artet, all rows in first tier have the same deep?

2tier - 40 deep, 85height
artet May 2nd, 2012, 05:22 PM How you can make an detailed stadium in 3ds max?
Well because 3ds max its not google sketchup crap, so it can handle massive projects... mine is over 2 million polygons. And as long as you have enough ram memory to store all textures and the 3ds file at time of rendering all goes well.
Yes the depth of all rows is 80cm from the 1st to the 3rd tier, except the rows for the vip boxes, those have a 100cm deph
artet May 2nd, 2012, 05:41 PM Hi artet,
:omg: they look really great I would love to learn that, you got a tuturial how to make them?
I am making a stadium mod for a game (cities xl) but I can only use 8000 triangles and thats not much, so I have to use more textures like the pepsi arena indeed, so I would love to learn both ( the chairs like you done and like the pepsi arena) here s a link of what I made (my name there s axel)
http://xlnation.net/content/stadium?page=4
I learned 3ds all by my self so I am just a beginnen, but i love using 3 ds
I'm a self taught 3ds max user too.
Sorry but there is no tutorial on how to make it that i know.
If you want to learn 3ds max, I seriously advise you to check the tutorials from Tate brothers (Ben and Chris Tate) at http://cg.tutsplus.com/
I learned almost every thing I need with them. Their tutorials, even the most complicated ones, are great even for beginners cause they explain every thing they do very clearly.
Like this tutorial on uvw mapping in max (http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/an-introduction-to-uvmapping-in-3d-studio-max-using-the-unwrap-uvw-modifier/) and 2nd part tutorial (http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/an-introduction-to-uvmapping-in-3d-studio-max-using-the-unwrap-uvw-modifier-part-2/)
This is how my chairs look like...
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5217/stadiumchairs.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/377/stadiumchairstexture.jpg
They are just 2 planes with a texture uvw mapped on them.
stefan2000 May 2nd, 2012, 07:33 PM artet can you teach me about creating stadiums in 3ds max?
stefan2000 May 2nd, 2012, 07:38 PM A stand, a stadium with 10.000 seats something like this.
artet May 2nd, 2012, 08:25 PM I could do a tutorial, but it would be a tedious task to print/upload/post tons of images on every move I make.
I would have to do it on video using fraps but never used it for that so I would have to learn it first. Anyways I can try.
But you should take the advice I gave to achwel and watch some video tutorials on cgtuts+ like this one (http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/model-a-high-rez-domed-fountain-structure-in-3ds-max/) to learn the basics if you don't know anything about 3dsmax

I don't get the hate for Sketchup, I've got a file here at 34.2 million edges, 15.6 million polys. Sketchup is handling it fine. Sketchup only craps out if you can't use it properly.
achwel May 2nd, 2012, 10:58 PM thank you artet,
ill take your advice and teach me somme more 3DS and thank you for the images and the link :cheers1:
did you see my work on the link I posted, is it any good?
artet May 3rd, 2012, 12:18 AM I don't get the hate for Sketchup, I've got a file here at 34.2 million edges, 15.6 million polys. Sketchup is handling it fine. Sketchup only craps out if you can't use it properly.
Its not hatred :ohno:
It's just my opinion based on what I read here in the forum and the experience I had with it, and it lagged all over with just a tier of my model, i gave up importing the rest of it. (version 6 pro if i'm not mistaken)
If it works for you great... it didn't for me, i can´t work with something if I have to turn off shading or the edges all the time I need to pan around the model, or to hide objects to reduce lag on the viewport, or to use lowres textures and hide them from the viewport, or to use proxys (same as components for sketchup), witch makes a huge difference for my workflow.
@achwel
Yes i saw your link and I noticed that you were already using seats but couldn't figure out if they were textures. What´s the model for?! I understood it was for some mod but is it for a game?
Low poly modeling is a good start... you will need it if you are aiming for the gaming industry

I had an even bigger file then that, about double it, It was running silky smooth. Ofocurse I wouldnt ever turn on the shadows lol.

Leedsrule May 3rd, 2012, 04:19 PM Pompeyfan, what are the best settings for sketchup?
Dont think ive ever touched my settings :/
There isnt really anything to change, but unlil recently i was still using the begginners template simply cos i couldnt be bothered to change. Ive built plenty of large stadiums and arenas like this but usualy after it hits like 20mb, although my computer is fine with it , i know theres no hope of getting it down to 10mb and if i cant upload it i cant see the point in doing it cos i put so much small detail into it i dont see the point in doing it if i cant upload it.
Another reason why I like doing small, low league stadiums.

My apologies.
Pompeyfan, what are the best settings for sketchup?
Hard to give you an idea of best settings because there is a multitude of variables involved. Firstly, find out what your graphics card is, and make sure you have an appropriate driver for it. For example, I have a GTX 460, and if I used the second to last release of drivers, my mouse would stutter on screen and I would end up with streaky tails behind where I moved my mouse in Sketchup. Newest set I can work on the model I mentioned earlier with no issues like that.
Layers are the next thing you need to focus on. Put each individual aspect of your stadium on a different layer and turn off layers that you are not using. The roof should be one layer, the facade another, the seats another, and so forth.
Practice using components, because if used properly they will help a lot. It's something that really just takes practice to find the most appropriate way to use components, and really just depends on your personal style.
Some of the default settings that can be changed to help include going into preferences (Window - Preferences) and turning off unused extensions, going into general and increasing the autosave time (if you want an autosave file to be created), turning off update checking (just a pain to deal with at times) and adjusting your OpenGL settings. It would be impossible for me to say which are the best OpenGL settings for you, but try each of them and see which of them help you the most.
I could go on all day, but this will provide you a starting point to work off. Good luck and happy modelling.

masterpaul May 6th, 2012, 12:47 AM Cuz the best stadiums in the world are the biggest ones
Lol not really :P A small stadium can be just as impressive as a big one :P
mitjamvp May 6th, 2012, 01:12 AM big stadiums are usually more interesting, but main reason for that is simply the fact they are big (Barca). IMO its much harder to make an interesting small stadium with a charisma. One of my favourite stadiums would be Pepsi Arena (Legia) which is small, but seems almost perfect.

Personally I find small stadiums more difficult/challenging. For me conciliating a facade and a roof it's the most difficult part of designing a stadium, and it's even harder if there is small space to work with. That's why I end up taking the easiest road :)

artet May 6th, 2012, 05:12 AM artet, is it much harder to use 3DS Max compared to Sketchup?
Not for me, since I know practically nothing about sketchup
I tried it once but it didn't go well so I went for 3ds max and never left.
3dsmax's tools layout may be a little bit scary for newbies, but its easy to learn if you give it a chance, and there are lots of tutorials about it and lots of tools and plugins, some of them free, that simplify and add more speed to the modeling process.
Maybe someone who knows well both programs can give you better answer.
Oh and 3dsmax comes with Mental Ray and gpu render engines like Nvidia Iray.

artet May 9th, 2012, 01:14 AM Artet, how you can copy rows and put them in the right position one on another?
By turning on "snaps toggle" and setting it to vertex snap, then just select the row, select the move tool and put your mouse over one of the vertices of the front down row and move it in diagonal to opposite vertex.
Or go to "Tools" menu and choose "array" and move the row using array window options.
Or download the 1h tutorial I made at your request on how to make a stadium with curved stands. It has no audio but I made subtitles so you understand what I'm doing. Since it was my first video tutorial I forgot to highlight the mouse arrow so it could be a bit hard to follow it some times, but anyway here it is...

At least one emergency exit for the ambulance is must. The bigger is better, to has enough place for a truck. E.g. when you want to repair the pitch.
An entrance for players, three benches (one for the refrees), one or two scoreboard, and stadium light poles.
VIP and PRESS boxes. But I dont know how many is the rule. It depends on the capacity.

1887 Tyke May 13th, 2012, 12:01 PM That stadium is one of the best I've ever seen!
UjaiDidida May 13th, 2012, 05:45 PM wow thats superb! :applause: please build that stadium! lol
artet May 13th, 2012, 07:59 PM Thank you guys.
About the time it takes I have no idea, since I had it almost complete and decided to change something or add more detail so many times. I also didn't work on it every day, and it was designed on the fly without previous planning.
Anyways I started on it in 2007 and paused in 2009.
Stands big like this would just take 1 or 2 days to do though.

Yes great work, i flicked through this thread before I started posting a while ago, this is defenately one of if not the best stadiums here.
I think the longest part of building that would be the facade and interior, and I never have the patience nor the computing power to do either in great detail. Basicly as I start a new project, I immediately come up with a new idea and get bored of building the original, and i get inspiration from alot of things so it just keeps on going. I reckon ive got at least 50 unfinished projects in my files, some I look back on and wish i finshed, some I wonder why I started.
Anyway point is I hope to, one day, be able to build and render something as good as that, but that time is quite some way off! Its people like you (and Chimera, AKJwak and GC, among others) who inspire people to start with your fantastic projects. Im looking forward to more from you in the future!

Hi,
Dark lines along the seams on models are general caused by mipmapping (decrease/increase texture resolution with distance). The color you have for background in your texture map is bleeding on to the texture near the edge seams because of this.
You have a Padding (edge padding I think) option in the Render to Texture window. Just increase that number (pixels) and render it again. You can also change the background color of the texture map to something closer to the color of your texture near the edges and paint your texture a bit more past the edges.
Also make sure you don't have overlapping faces inside your UVW mapping coordinates.
And make sure you are not saving and using 3dsmax RTT window preview image. 3dsmax can save the final RTT map in your hard drive without showing it in the preview, so don't use the wrong map.
Hope it helps.
stefan2000 May 15th, 2012, 06:31 PM Can i import a 3ds max model in google sketchup?
artet May 15th, 2012, 06:59 PM Can i import a 3ds max model in google sketchup?
Yes, but for free you can only do this by exporting the model from 3dsmax as a .DWG or a .3DS, and you will end up having to clean/repair your mesh. 3DS file format is a very old one and tends to triangulate the mesh even if in 3dsmax original model you only had quad faces. With DWG you could end up with some missing polygons.
I think none of this formats will keep the uvw mapping done in 3dsmax.
You also have to collapse any modifier in the stack and convert the model into a editable poly/mesh.
Oh and don't forget to reset "xform" of all your 3dsmax models before exporting them or, when importing to other 3D programs, your models end up showing in the wrong coordinates.
The best way would be to export 3dsmax models as .OBJ or .FBX because the mesh would be kept as in the original, and the uvw mapping would be saved too. The only problem is that I think sketchup doesn't support .FBX, and it only supports .OBJ with external plug-ins and I don't think there is a good one for free. Maybe I'm mistaken on this.

All the renders I have are 3 years old, I don't have anything new, so here some of them, some of them are previous versions of the facade.

artet May 17th, 2012, 01:47 AM Yes, but since I'm still using a 32bit OS, at render time I have to hide everything that isn't visible from camera or the render will crash. But working in the viewport I can have everything showing without problems.

I'll be able to fit the televised set in there and also some PPV sets, the ceiling is just tall enough for a snug fit, the lower tier seats will be pushed back a little for the stage to fit, but aside from arenas I do design sets :D you can check out my youtube channels youtube.com/WWEChrisHBK and youtube.com/ArchaicGraphics

TBH you wouldnt need an indoor arena in particular. You can take inspiration from a small stadium, then just make it smaller, or look at american multi-purpose stadiums for some insparation. The arena itself dosent have to be deatiled at all either, just render the bits that look good, so seeing another might not help you a great deal. i have a couple of arnas, i think most of the finished ones I uploaded so you're welcome to use them, but its not a great example as they are pretty detailed and I haven really even tried rendering them.

lpioe June 1st, 2012, 07:10 PM I resumed work on my stadium script for 3ds Max yesterday and added a GUI:
http://oi47.tinypic.com/2ekhv7c.jpg
And here is the result after you click on "Create Stands":
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5632/bbbbme.jpg
Known issue: If you click "Create Stands" more than once the rowheight is wrong. So if you want to try out different values, exit the script and rerun it.
How to run: Download the file and place it in the script folder in your 3ds Max directory (or anywhere you want). Then in the program under the "MAXScript" tab choose "Run script" and select the file.
Thanks to artet for testing it.
Here is the link:

I reuploaded this script after I got a request for it today:
Here is the link if anyone else is interested: http://www2.zshare.ma/61m9wt2znn9g
The distances in the GUI are in [cm] btw.

Kaijday June 3rd, 2012, 01:09 AM Letchworth AFC
A new team has been set up in Letchworth, which has applied to enter the non league pyramid at Step 6 and has had it's application accepted on the basis that its ground is built in time for pre-season. Building works commenced in the summer on the new stadium, which had been built after being given a grant from the Letchworth Heritage Foundation.
The barriers and pitch were used from the original youth setup, with a new stand, clubhouse and floodlights to be built around it. Fencing would then be put up so the club could charge entrance to the stadium.
The new capacity of the ground was planned at 500 seated, with space for another 500 standing around the perimeter fence.
http://i45.tinypic.com/6q8jg4.png
The next step was to put in place the foundations for the main stand. The main stand would be situated at one end of the pitch (along a longer side) with the clubhouse right next to it.
http://i46.tinypic.com/118iu6q.png
http://i46.tinypic.com/6s9gu1.png
After the main stand had been built, the foundations for the clubhouse went in and the seats for the main stand were ordered. 536 seats could fit in the new stand and they would be blue to match the clubs historic colours.
http://i45.tinypic.com/20b0k8n.png
The floodlights and seats were put in just in time for pre-season and the club were accepted to Step 6 of the non-league pyramid.

stefan2000 June 3rd, 2012, 10:15 AM WHY THAT?
Nikola10 June 3rd, 2012, 10:59 AM agree doesnt look good
AJKwak June 3rd, 2012, 11:23 AM agree doesnt look good
What would be better?
stefan2000 June 3rd, 2012, 11:42 AM Something like that, but with a shape like the shape of arena!
Kaijday June 3rd, 2012, 12:45 PM I agree. The way you currently plan to do it does not match the arena at all. Looks like the roof of a larger arena added to that!
