nazrey July 8th, 2009, 09:03 PM Shuttle buses from Subang SkyPark to KLIA, city soon
By Marina Emmanuel
Published: 2009/07/09
PASSENGERS on Firefly landing at the Subang SkyPark will soon be able to enjoy shuttle bus services into the city and Sepang.
FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said following the positive response received from the community airline's bus collaboration with Rapid Penang since May, Firefly is looking at more value-for-money options for its passengers.
"We are in active arrangement with Subang Skypark to introduce shuttle bus services to KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport," he told Business Times.
Leong said Firefly's collaboration with Rapid Penang is based on cross-marketing.
"Passengers buying our tickets are informed on their booking itinerary that they are entitled to this special service and we also make announcements on board.
"This is especially good for Indonesian passengers who need not worry about 'negotiating' bus or taxi charges when they land in Penang," he added.
The Rapid shuttle bus service takes passengers to Weld Quay in George Town from the airport.
From its hubs in Subang and Penang, Firefly offers flights within Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
Firefly is also considering developing a loyalty programme to reward its individual and corporate customers.
"This is still at a very early stage and the idea is to offer something that is drastically different from other airlines."
rizalhakim July 9th, 2009, 07:25 AM Recognition for airport outlets
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ
THE McDonald LCCT-KLIA outlet was voted the F&B outlet of the year for the second time in a row while Pan Pacific KLIA won the Chairman’s Award at the KLIA Awards 2008 ceremony held at the Pan Pacific KLIA hotel in Sepang recently.
A total of 15 awards were up for grabs for all airline and service providers operating at the KL International Airport.
The ceremony was the fourth edition of the awards, for which the winners are given recognition based on passenger movements, strong growth, good sales performance, international recognition as well as service performance. The recent awards were all based on 2008 performance.
The awards come in the shape of a specially constructed 1.5 kg pewter trophy, which takes after the KLIA columns supporting the terminal building, resembling an oil palm.
The KLIA Awards was introduced in 2006 and is the only award in the country that pays tribute to the best performers in the aviation industry.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Robert Lau, who gave away the awards, said the secret of KLIA’s success lay in the synergy of the dedicated people who worked hand in hand to make what the airport what it is today.
“I truly appreciate the commitment and support of every one who has contributed to KLIA’s success throughout the year,” Lau said.
Malaysia Airports managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the KLIA Awards was a medium to acknowledge those within the KLIA community who had consistently improved themselves and enhanced their presence at the airport with their excellent service extended to all airport users.
“This year, 2009, has been a trying time for the aviation industry but the existing cooperation among all airport operators and partners will ensure KLIA ends the year on a positive note,” Bashir said.
He said the KLIA was internationally recognised and thus it was imperative to keep an excellent track record on performance in line with the vision to be a “world-class airport business’’.
Also present at the Awards presentation was Malaysia Airports chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman.
More than 500 guests attended the event, at which the multi-talented Leonard Tan provided entertainment.
The 2008 Award winners:

Published: 2009/07/09
PASSENGER movements at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang fell 0.5 per cent to 2.318 million in May this year compared with the figure a year ago.
The decline was due to a drop in international passenger movements by 0.8 per cent to 1.507 million, said a report released by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) today.
The number of domestic passengers at the country's main airport was down only marginally at 810,927 from 811,289, it said.
As for other airports operated by MAHB, it said international passenger movements fell 9.3 per cent to 223,135, but the domestic passenger movements rose 5.6 per cent to 1.514 million.
Overall, the other airports posted 3.4 per cent growth with 1.737 million passengers.
Passengers movements at the airports managed by MAHB meanwhile rose 1.1 per cent to 4.054 million.
Meanwhile, cargo movements at MAHB's operated airports saw a drastic drop of 22.4 per cent to 63.137 million kgs, compared with 81.406 million kgs in the same month last year.
MAHB said at KLIA, the cargo movements fell 19.9 per cent to 45.619 million kgs as movements of international cargo fell 19.5 per cent to 41.759 million kgs, while domestic cargo dropped 23.8 per cent to 3.859 million kgs.
At the other airports operated by MAHB, international cargo movements fell 33 per cent to 10.703 million kgs and domestic cargo fell 19.5 per cent to 17.518 million kgs.
However, the number of aircraft movements increased with KLIA recording a 7.4 per cent growth to 18,857 movements in May, while movements at other airports rose 5.6 per cent to 25,540.
At KLIA, the international aircraft movements rose 11.5 per cent to 11,967, while the dometic movements rose 1 per cent to 6,890.
At the other airports, international aircraft movements rose 2.7 per cent to 3,163, while the domestic movements rose 6 per cent to 22,377 movements. - Bernama
rizalhakim July 23rd, 2009, 06:29 AM Negri govt wants dual carriageway link to KLIA
SEREMBAN: The state government wants the federal authorities to construct a 45km dual carriageway linking Seremban to KL International Airport (KLIA) as the current stretch cannot accommodate the increasing number of vehicles.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this was among the state’s priorities under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP) from 2011-2015.
“We need a dual carriageway as the population in Bandar Enstek, Sendayan and Gadong, among others, has increased rapidly.
“With a dual carriageway the traffic along the North-South Expressway from Seremban to KLIA and Putrajaya would be reduced,” he said, adding that the road would enable a straight drive to Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the exco meeting at Wisma Negri here, he added that this would also lessen the burden on motorists as the new stretch would be toll-free.
Mohamad said the state government also hoped the federal authorities would provide sufficient funds to enable it to upgrade the Seremban-Gemas and Seremban-Kuala Pilah-Ayer Hitam stretches.
“Our priorities under 10MP are to upgrade these stretches as the smaller towns along these routes have also been expanding,” he said, adding that accidents are also increasing along these routes.
Ijud July 30th, 2009, 02:30 PM * air asia doesn't want to use MTB/ satelite A cause
** they don't want to use frills like aerobrige, travellator, nice architecture
** they don't want to pay extra taxes
** they just want a box to move people inside an airplane (sounds like a cattle ranch)
** if airasia play ball and use the klia just like the rest of the airlines, i bet we will having a 2nd satelite terminal working by now...
A: AA has indicated it all boils down to cost. I will bet they will if an attractive package is proposed. It's better than leaving the gates going un-used, wouldn't you think so? Point is, what kind of business enterprise would leave something perfectly usable go to waste...sitting idle? Yes, you and I know the answer.
* thai airways and singapore airlines are part of star alliance
** so more international airlines stop there instead of KLIA
** even BA (skyteam) stops in changi because of this effect
** MAS have been begging to get into skyteam but i guess thai airways and singapore airlines is trying hard to stop this.
A: You're saying something no one already doesn't know...pretty obvious.
* what's more important? people passing through the airport or using the airport as the final destination?
** changi airport serves 35 mil/year but how many of them actually stay in singapore?
A: More revenues, is that something bad? KLIA wants to be a "hub" badly, as I read over and over again, until the word "hub" is used all over for every application.
*** case in point, qantas route sdy-sin-london generates around 1.5-2.0 mil/year in traffic, how much of them actually stay in singapore?
A: so? they don't need to stay. traffic generates more traffic, more revenues in shopping, stay-overs, etc. Not to mention awareness of our country, culture, etc. which themselves are priceless. word of mouth is the best advertisement.
*another thot, is an empty airport means underutilized or extremely efficient?
** aerobrigdes are rented by the hour. plane stuck in an aerobridge is just a plane waiting for passengers
A: To me and a handful others within our travel group, it was pretty obvious again...I don't need to say more. Efficiency and optimum usage is achievable concurrently. waiting for passengers? isn't that the purpose? we need more planes "stuck" in an aerobridge, right? that's my point exactly. bring on AA then!
** X numbers of planes waiting at the tarmac is means planes waiting for their turn to take off, or planes waiting for another plane to land...
A: X = just to give you an idea how low that number is.
btw bro, your claims was not the first, and i strongly believe that it'd not be a last.
A: claims??? what claims? i was putting forth my observations, and that is spending public funds only out of necessity, and not for the sake of appeasing a private entity like AA. what's so wrong about that? as a business-minded person, that's how i feel. then again, we can agree to disagree and nothing wrong with that either!
Well Khaw let me refresh some old news...
Lack Of Transparency In Deciding Airport Charges In M'sia, Says IATA
January 09, 2007 14:09 PM
By Jackson Sawatan
SINGAPORE, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the Ministry of Transport to engage airlines in effective consultations when deciding on airport charges.
IATA said today that there had been a lack of transparency in determining airport charges in Malaysia and that the consultations with the airport users were "not effective".
"There have also been no responses to letters sent to the Ministry of Transport," IATA said in a statement here Tuesday.
IATA was responding to a recent report quoting MAHB as saying that landing and parking charges at airports in Malaysia have not been increased for 25 years and are the lowest in the region.
MAHB also said that all aeronautical charges were decided and approved by the government and therefore any airlines' views would need to be conveyed to the proper authorities for consideration.
"While MAHB's landing and parking charges are the lowest in the region, MAHB and the Ministry of Transport have failed to engage IATA and airlines on effective consultations on charges," it said.
"Based on charging principles adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), airport charges have to be based on sound economic principles, transparent and cost related. The charges should not discriminate against airlines, and agreement should be reached through consultations with airlines," it said.
If MAHB and the Ministry of Transport want to be in line with world best practices, they should urgently engage airlines in effective consultations, the statement said.
"IATA is ready to work together with MAHB and the Ministry of Transport to ensure an efficient and fair charging model in accordance with internationally agreed principles," the statement added.
>>> You have to know that if AirAsia or any other low cost carriers uses the MTB or Sat Terminal (Premium Services) they will have to pay the same price structure as what the premium airlines are paying... No double standards or IATA and premium airlines will hunt MAHB down... that's why MAHB had to offer other alternative to the low cost carriers which is the LCCT... it's not that MAHB never thought of what you have said, it's just that they have to be fair to other airlines using the facilities... in fact their charges are already relatively lower than other airports around...

nazrey August 18th, 2009, 04:05 PM MAHB enters 1st phase of new hub plan
Published: 2009/08/18
MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), in keeping with current travel trends and technology savvy travellers, today launched the first phase of its Next Generation Hub programme.
As part of the programme, the KL International Airport (KLIA) is being positioned as a next generation hub, a premier airport that will enable passengers to connect seamlessly amongst all types of carriers including full service airlines and low-cost carriers to all destinations served from KLIA.
For a start, MAHB and KLIA launched the web portal www.flyklia.com, which provides an itinerary builder that integrates all airlines schedules and fares, including full service carriers and low-cost carriers.
"We want to come out with facilities that help the passengers to travel in our airport in a more comfortable manner.
"We hope people will make use of it. The aviation industry is changing. Ten years ago it was different. Today, passengers can actually choose their own itinerary, their own fares.
"Ten years from now, I''m sure the industry will change from what it is now and we are going to be ready for it," MAHB's managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad told reporters after the web portal launch today.
Currently, there are 54 airlines in KLIA featured in the website.
Asked whether the airport operator will add more airlines in the website, Bashir said they will be added as they come on board.
The itinerary builder was developed in partnership with an Iceland-based technology company which provides innovative technology solutions for the travel industry.
The Flight Planner, which is free to use, searches more than 660 airlines worldwide for the best flights and connections available.
The search results include links to airlines and other travel portals where travellers can book flights directly.
Besides flight booking options, the website also features information such as the operating airlines at KLIA, facilities available and environmental efforts at KLIA.
The portal would be continually enhanced and for the next phase of development, MAHB is already looking at including hotel booking engine which will compare prices for properties in and outside Malaysia.
MAHB also plans to add an Airport Frequent Connector Loyalty programme, which is aimed at rewarding the frequent travellers.
On news report regarding MAHB to announce a new set of financial incentives for airlines that fly out of the 39 airports it operates in the country, Bashir said discussions will be held with the airlines the next one or two weeks before an announcement is made.
"The incentives are actually to reward the airlines that bring business to the airport (KLIA)," Bashir said. - Bernama

nazrey August 18th, 2009, 10:13 PM MAHB: New incentive package in 2 weeks
By Presenna Nambiar Published: 2009/08/19
AIRPORT operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (5014) said it will announce its new incentive package for airlines that fly out of the 39 airports it operates in the country in two weeks.
Its group managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the announcement will only be made after briefing the 54 airlines using its airports, in the next week or two.
"It is only fair that we let our (airline) partners know of the incentives before we make it public," Bashir said when asked for details of the new incentives.
Business Times, quoting sources, reported on Monday that MAHB will unveil its new incentive package for airlines this week.
Bashir was speaking at the launch of the "KLIA as the next generation hub", an initiative to enable passengers to connect seamlessly among all types of carriers, including full-service and low-cost carriers to all destinations served from the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang.
Under the first phase of the initiative, MAHB and KLIA have launched a portal - www.flyklia.com - which is an itinerary builder that integrates all airline schedules and fares, including full-service carriers and low-cost carriers.

The flight planner, which is free to use, searches more than 660 airlines worldwide for the best flights and connections available. The search results include links to airlines and other travel portals where travellers can book flights directly.
"What we are doing is basically giving passengers a choice, as well as providing the convenience of planning their whole trip just by going to one portal," Bashir said.
The portal will be continually enhanced, and in the next phase of development, MAHB is looking at adding other features such as a hotel booking engine which will compare prices for properties in and outside Malaysia.
"KLIA's positioning as a next generation hub is really the first step in the many changes that the airport will have to go through in order to continue to meet the changing needs of airlines and passengers alike.
"The aviation industry has changed so much in the last 10 years that I think it is fair to say that the next 10 years will see more changes coming," Bashir said.

TRAVELLING trends are changing and our local aviation industry has picked up on the changes.
Yesterday, KL International Airport (KLIA) and Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) launched the first phase of the Next Generation Hub, a web portal called www.flyklia.com, which provides an itinerary builder that integrates all airlines' schedules and fare, including full service carriers and low-cost carriers.
Through this web portal, travellers are able to choose the lowest fare and the quickest route to a destination.
“We may not be the first to offer such services to travellers but we are the most updated,” said MAB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.
He added that this portal also serves to facilitate people to use Kuala Lumpur as a transit point. In the past, such information was possible but required much more work and hassle. With one website to find the connections, travellers can save time.
The flight planner on the portal, which is free, searches more than 660 airlines worldwide for the best flights and connections available. The search results include links to airlines and other travel portals where travellers can book flights directly.
“The portal empowers the traveller with tools to build unique itineraries. At a touch of a button, travellers may choose to arrive at their destination on full-service carriers and depart on a low-cost carrier. Such combinations would not show up on a regular booking engine.”
Moreover, the website is easy to navigate, said Bashir.
With the launch of the website, Malaysia Airports is also excited to introduce the new “KLIA Next Generation Hub — The new way to the world” branding to convey a new way of doing things for both passengers and airlines.
As for what phase two of the plan will be, Bashir said it will be announced when the time comes.

OH ING YEEN at Sepang Municipal Council full board meeting
WHILE birds’ nests are considered a delicacy for some, swiftlets flying into the airplane’s engines as it takes off is a nuisance and a safety hazard.
According to Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp) president Azizan Mohamad Sidin, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) guidelines state that swiftlet farmers must be outside the 40km radius of the KL International Airport (KLIA).
“It is dangerous when the birds fly into the engines as the planes take off as the planes may crash.
“The guidelines say that it has to be done on agriculture land. We won’t allow the activity in shoplots or abandoned buildings.
“There are those that are located within a 10km radius from the airport. We suggest that they relocate to Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, or Sabak Bernam. We can’t be harsh on them because they have to make a living but we have the public safety in mind,” he said.
There will be a meeting with the members of the Sepang Swiftlet Entrepreneurs Association next week to discuss the matter.

“The luxury goods business faces a challenging time this year but since July, we do see some pick-up in sales in our stores such as the ones located at the airports,” he noted, adding that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd had played an impressive role in turning KLIA into one of the best airports in this region and internationally.
“I hope traffic volume can see more improvement so that we will be on par like the Changi Airport. Having more traffic means more people coming to shop here at KLIA,” he said.
The company has more than 10 luxury boutiques operating at KLIA.

nazrey September 10th, 2009, 10:47 PM JPJ Detects New Tactics Of Airport Touts
September 09, 2009 18:04 PM
SEPANG, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has detected three tactics employed by touts to get passengers to use their illegal transport services from the KL International Airport (KLIA) and Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) to their destinations.
JPJ director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said today one tactic was to buy a normal taxi coupon for a nearby destination and transport by the normal taxi a passenger who wanted to go to a distant destination until after the JPJ road block.
After passing the road block, the passenger would be transferred to a private car for the rest of the journey, he told a news conference at the KLIA.
Solah said another tactic was to get the passengers to use the Express Rail Link (ERL) service to Salak Tinggi before continuing the journey in a private car.
"The third tactic is to use the available taxi or shuttle service to get past the JPJ road block before transferring the passenger to a private vehicle," he said.
These tactics of the touts were detected by the JPJ which conducted 24-hour monitoring at the KLIA and the LCCT in cooperation with Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB), he added.
Solah said JPJ did not rule out the possibility of collaboration with "insiders" and touts.
"JPJ has been going after touts in KLIA and LCCT since July by setting up road blocks. With incessant enforcement, much of the activity of the touts has been reduced," he said.
He said JPJ monitoring and operations since August last year had resulted in the detention of 50 touts, 28 of them at the KLIA and 22 at the LCCT.
He also said that JPJ impounded 159 vehicles between June 3 and July 7, comprising 39 cars, 25 buses, 80 taxis and 15 hire cars.
"Between July 17 and today, JPJ impounded 46 vehicles, comprising 21 cars, 24 taxis and one bus," he said.

nazrey September 13th, 2009, 09:58 PM Jet Air pilots end strike; Chennai-KL flights resume
Updated: Sunday September 13, 2009 MYT 7:01:06 PM
NEW DELHI: Jet Airways flights from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will resume operations from Sunday night after the airline's pilots called off a mass protest.
After a five-day standoff, about 400 Jet Air pilots who went on sick leave, are to return to work Sunday.
The decision to end the strike was announced after Jet Air's management and the leaders of the National Aviators Guild reached a late night agreement to resolve the impasse, which had crippled the airline's flight operations.
"An amicable agreement has been arrived at enabling the recommencement of all domestic and international operations immediately.
"Effective Sunday, the airline will operate their full schedule of services on all sectors with all crew reporting for their normal rostered duties," the airline's chairman Naresh Goyal said in a press statement.
The pilots started the protest after the management sacked two of their colleagues for forming a trade union while the services of two other pilots were also terminated.
The airline has agreed to reinstate the four pilots.
Hundreds of unhappy pilots of the airline went on sick leave on Monday causing major chaos in domestic and international routes, and led to the cancellation of almost 800 flights, stranding thousands of passengers.

nazrey September 15th, 2009, 04:36 PM MAHB enters 1st phase of new hub plan
- Bernama

KLIA To Facilitate Seamless Connection Between Carriers, Terminals
September 15, 2009 20:10 PM
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- KL International Airport (KLIA) will introduce facilities called "Next Generation Hub" that enable passengers to connnect seamlessly between all types of carriers and between different types of terminals.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) announced this at the 15th World Route Development Forum that took place in Beijing from Sept 13 to 15, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
"Today's passengers are presented with numerous options from full service carriers, low cost carriers, various routings, prices and so on. The best option could be a combination of a full service carrier and low cost carrier.
"However, selecting the best combination of carriers, routing and price is not easy since there is no single portal for the passenger to use," said MAHB general manager (marketing) Sallauddin Mat Sah.
He said KLIA's Next Generation Hub would provide the passenger with "tools to plan an itinerary that best suit his or her needs, as well as the physical infrastructure to integrate and enable connections between full service and low cost carriers".
The airport operator said there was already a growing trend of passengers who self-connect between the Main Terminal Building and Low Cost Terminal at KLIA.
A study had revealed that there were at least 500 self-connect passengers per day or 1,000 passenger movements, representing an annual market of over 180,000 passengers, it added.
It said KLIA was well positioned as a Next Generation Hub as the airport offered both the largest volume of routes and traffic carried out by low cost carriers, making it a market leader in the sector in the Asia Pacific Region and globally.
"By capitalising on the trends and developments within the airline industry and consumer environment such as the rise of internet bookings and the era of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, MAHB is seizing the opportunity to create and shape a world first Next Generation Hub at KLIA and foresees that the number of connecting passengers between the two terminals could grow significantly in the next few years," Sallauddin said.
At Beijing forum, MAHB also launched www.flyklia.com. The website provides an itinery builder that integrates all airlines and fares, including full service carriers and low cost carriers.
"The portal is free to use and search results include links to airlines and travel agent websites where travellers can book flights directly.
"This portal will continue to be extensively enhanced over the coming months and MAHB is also looking at adding other initiatives such as an airport loyalty scheme for frequent flyers," Sallauddin said.

One of the looks put together by the
contestants of the ‘iStyle KLIA’ competition
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Shopping Campaign 2008/2009 took off and landed with much style.
The shopping campaign ended with a fashion showcase -- the first ever organised by Malaysia Airports. The showcase, called "iStyle KLIA", was a styling competition, in which participants were challenged to pull together a look using fashion products available at KLIA.
Six teams comprising two members each were selected from the 33 entries. The contestants were young designers studying at fashion and design institutions in Klang Valley.
Among the institutions represetned were Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm), Raffles Design Institute and PJ College of Art and Design.
The first heats was held on July 30 and for each subsequent week after that, participants were required to create the best ensemble, according to the given theme.
The theme for the first heats was "Casual Chic", for which participants had to create practical yet smart outfits.
The second heats was "Exotic Exquisite". Strong and bold prints had to be matched with heavy accessories.
The third and final Hheat carried the theme "After 7", which challenged the contestants to transform office attire into stylish party and dinner wear.
Each team's ensemble was evaluated at the end of the weekly heats.
On the final night, before the winners were announced, a catwalk showcasing the ensembles created by all six teams throughout the competition was held before the winning team was announced.
The winner of iStyle KLIA was Team Noir from Raffles Design Institute.
Shock was clearly visible on the faces of team members Silas Liew Chuan Min, 25, and Jonathan Liang Yow Shuih, 21, when their names were announced.
"We had so many ideas for each different theme but we are glad that the looks we finally presented for the heats were adjudged the best," said Liew.
iStyle KLIA saw the involvement of some of Malaysia's fashion icons like Datuk Tom Abang Saufi and Khoon Hooi. Alex Eu was the event's fashion consultant and chief judge.
Tan Sri Datuk Dr Aris Othman, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's chairman, said the competition provided a great opportunity to showcase the stylish apparel and accessories available at KLIA.
Three shopping contests with prizes worth a total of RM2.7 million were held in conjunction with the shopping campaign, which ran from Aug 26 last year to June 11.
The grand prize of the KLIA Shopping Campaign 2008/2009 -- a Lexus GS300 worth RM420,000 -- was won by Faisal Affendie from Sarawak. His sister, Filzah Affendie, was present to receive the prize on his behalf.

nazrey September 28th, 2009, 12:43 AM Air India pilots' strike disrupts Chennai-KL flights
Published: Sunday September 27, 2009 MYT 12:44:00 PM
CHENNAI: Air operations at several Indian airports were once again thrown into disarray after nearly 150 disgruntled Air India pilots refused to fly and went on "sick leave" on Saturday.
The pilots, mostly in the non-unionised executive category, were unhappy over the cash-strapped Air India management's decision to slash their productivity-linked incentives by 50-70% last Wednesday, a move that would drastically reduce their take-home pay by at least 50%.
As of Sunday morning, at least 20 domestic and international flights were either cancelled or delayed.
The carrier's flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to depart at 2am Sunday was cancelled and another from Chennai to Singapore, scheduled for 12.45am Sunday, was also disrupted.
"All Air India passengers were accommodated on Air India Express flight which left Kuala Lumpur at 2.30am. It is too early to say about tomorrow morning's flight to Kuala Lumpur.
"Some talks have been initiated and we hope it will come under control," a Chennai-based senior Air India official said Sunday.
Air India, and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express, connects to 25 destinations worldwide.
The new labour agitation comes barely two weeks after about 400 Jet Airways pilots went on a mass "sick leave" for days, which almost crippled the airline's domestic and international operations.
Jet Airways' pilots wanted the management to reinstate two of their colleagues who were sacked by the airline for trying to establish a union.
The dispute was settled after the airline agreed to re-employ them and drop all charges against pilots who went on strike. - Bernama

Lembaga Tabung Haji is setting up a hotel and complex for pilgrims near the international airport in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu to help strengthen its product offering in the east coast.
"With the current market situation, investing in real estate is one of the areas that we are exploring. We are starting to look at providing infrastructure in the east coast," its chief executive officer, Datuk Ismee Ismail, said.
"We believe there is good potential for hotels in Kuala Terengganu looking at the number of direct flights available to Mecca," he said at the launch of Tabung Haji Uniteller Service in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Ismee said Tabung Haji is in the midst of finalising the design and building plans. He added that it would be viable to have a 3 or 4-star hotel with more than 250 rooms.
The hotel would cater to pilgrims in Kelantan and Terengganu performing the Haj annually, and to the public outside the Haj season.
It is estimated that it would cost the pilgrims fund between RM80 million and RM100 million to build the hotel and complex.
Tabung Haji is expected to start construction in the first half of next year.

Return fares on the Kuala Lumpur-Almaty route start at RM2,600 plus tax for an economy class seat to RM6,100 plus tax for business class seat.
Malaysians travelling to Kazakhstan can obtain a visit or business visa by simply presenting a letter of sponsorship from the host organisation or a letter of invitation plus a tour itinerary at the Kazakhstan embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the airline said.
"With both trade and tourism steadily growing between Kazakhstan and Malaysia, Air Astana is looking forward to launching the first direct air service between the two countries," said the airline's president, Peter Foster. - Bernama

Parents await quake affected students' return
SEPANG: The KL International Airport was a hive of activity as people welcomed their relatives returning home from Padang, West Sumatra.
Tears of joy were visible in the eyes of security officer Nordin Rasidi, 50, and his children, Nurul Azzawana, 16, and Nurul Syafiqah, ten, as his wife, Rostina Md Zain, 47, emerged from the arrival hall.
“We were worried when we learned that the village, which my wife had visited, was devastated by an earthquake. Thank God, she is all right,” Nordin told Bernama as he hugged his wife.
For Mohd Syahmi Affendi, 20, he was worried as his mother and several family members were still in Padang on a holiday.
“I managed to contact my mother after the earthquake. She told me that they were safe as they left the six-storey hotel for meals before it collapsed,” he said.
For Zulhenree Norman, 31, he felt anxiety over the safety of nine of his relatives as they did not arrive on the flight which touched down at 2.30pm.
“I believe my relatives, including two girls and two children, who were supposed to be travelling to Padang, could have been stranded in Bukit Tinggi,“ he said, adding that they were supposed to be on that flight.
Meanwhile, Mercy Malaysia said it would send a two-member team to Padang to assess the requirements for humanitarian aid.
Mercy Malaysia senior programme support officer Maria Lauranti and medical volunteer Oh Boon Haan left Malaysia at 2pm yesterday.
“Mercy Malaysia has also roped in an Indonesian volunteer, Azrim Mirza, stationed in Medan, to conduct an assessment,” said its president Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus in a statement.
The Malaysian Red Crescent Society is also ready to deploy a five-member disaster response team to Padang to provide emergency relief.

rizalhakim October 5th, 2009, 06:25 AM KLIA needs to clean up its act
RECENTLY, I arrived at KLIA and due to some problems, had to spend a few nights there.
KLIA is the world’s best airport in the 15-25 million category and it actually makes me proud as a Malaysian. But during the time I was there, I noticed some shortcomings which left me disappointed.
The first is the poor maintenance of the building.
For instance, you can see damaged chairs and tables along the corridors, garbage around the viewing area, and to my surprise, chairs at the waiting area are infested with fleas. No wonder my back felt itchy whenever I lay down on them. I hope the management can do something about this.
Secondly, those announcing the flight information and paging are not up to standard. I do believe Malaysians speak Bahasa Malaysia and English well and it would not be hard to find those who can really pronounce words well.
But to my surprise, some announcers seem quite bad.
It’s a disgrace for us to hear such poor pronunciation, especially in Chinese. Is it so hard to find a good announcer in such a high-class airport?
Thirdly, I noticed that many parents like to bring their families to KLIA, including little kids.
For the kids, KLIA seems like a shopping mall or a huge playground and they run all over the place.
Some even chase each other around the place.
The airport has become like a pasar malam while the parents just sit there doing nothing.
The children also run and shout at the food court on level two.
This is not only embarrassing to visitors, but is also dangerous as they might get hurt with all the hot food and chairs and tables there.
The last thing I want to comment on is the food court where I had lunch and dinner.
Most of their cleaners and dish collectors are foreigners and these people can’t speak Bahasa Malaysia or English.
Whenever a tourist asks them something, these workers just shake their heads.
They can’t communicate with anyone. How can this happen in one of the world’s best airports? These operators charge us steep prices for food but they hire unqualified and cheap workers.
They are not well trained and I felt uncomfortable eating there.
They will just clear everything on your table if you leave the table for 30 seconds.

nazrey October 9th, 2009, 08:21 AM MAHB to invest big in retail services
Published: 2009/10/09
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is planning a substantial investment to beef up its retail shopping and services to capture the higher revenue potential.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman, said a major renovation of its satellite building at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), is nearing completion.
According to Aris, MAHB will now focus on renovations to the main terminal building at the KLIA to enhance and modernise the retail facilities there.
"We realise we cannot rely on airport charges alone as it tends to remain stagnant or low, due to the competitiveness of many airports around the world," he said during the graduation ceremony of 194 airport security staff in Sepang today.
Aris said with the completion of the new low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) by the fourth quarter of 2011, a more enhanced shopping experience would be available.
Works on the new LCCT, he said, will commence next month and the total construction cost is RM2 billion.
He also said there would be no compromise in terms of airport security, despite the economic slowdown.
Aris highlighted that the MAHB had 2,500 security personnel and this number would be increased based on future requirements.
"As airports are the main gateway into the country, MAHB takes security issues seriously.
"We also work closely with the police on this matter," he added.
Selangor chief police officer (CPO) Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said criminal activities such as drug smuggling at the KLIA is well within control as the police force worked closely with foreign agencies on enforcement. -- Bernama

First, I share the same opinion regarding the announcers' quality. While many Malaysians are still proud of themselves being able to speak multiple languages, how many of them can actually speak perfect BM, English, Mandarin and Tamil? I dare to say less than 10% based on my observation. With that 10% left, how many are willing to accept such a low salary to be an airport announcer? I'm urging all Malaysians to look around and observe that in their daily life. It can't be that hard to come to a conclusion. Sometimes we Malaysian laugh at the Chinese and Taiwanese for not being able to speak English. But, at least they can speak perfect Mandarin which most Malaysian chinese cannot.
Note: this is only about the announcer. Needless to say the F&B outlet servers who generally have lower education level and lower communication skills.

Operasi pengendalian darat KL Airport Services di KLIA, Sepang.
Operasi kendalian darat dilaksana kakitangan KLAS pastikan perkhidmatan penerbangan komersial lancar

nazrey November 25th, 2009, 11:05 PM MAHB looks to commercial activities to sustain growth
Published: 2009/11/26
http://www.btimes.com.my/articles/mahb25/pix_topright
MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (3786) said it will continue to depend on increasing revenue from its commercial activities, although overall passenger movements have grown.
Managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the group is relying on its Retail Optimisation Programme (ROP) to ensure that its overall revenue growth is sustained.
Efforts on ROP at both the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) and the KL International Airport's main terminal in Sepang so far have contributed to a double-digit growth increase in its commercial revenue, comprising of rental, advertising, retail, food and beverage activities.
With the expansion of the LCCT from 10 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 15 mppa in March this year and completion of the ROP at KLIA's satellite building and contact pier, MAHB expects a much higher contribution from its retail and rental business from now onwards.
"We remain optimistic that the group's Headline Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be achieved ... with our improving financial position, we are able to continue and maybe even enhance our dividend payouts as well," said Bashir in a statement yesterday.
MAHB's pre-tax profit in the third quarter ended September 30 2009 was 17.1 per cent lower at RM111.2 million against RM134.2 million a year earlier.
This was despite revenue in the July-September period growing to RM377.4 million from RM364.5 million a year ago, mainly due to the growth in airport operations arising from a 20 per cent growth in total passenger movements.
"The passenger growth was mainly from the newly-expanded LCCT where the passenger service charges are much lower as compared to the main terminal resulting in a much lower than expected revenue," MAHB said.

Information boards have been put up along the road leading to the airport, Airport Boulevard, and at the departure levels of Terminals 1, 2 and 3, as well as at the Budget Terminal, to tell cabbies how many taxis are waiting at each terminal. They will also be told how many flights have arrived in the last 15 minutes and how many will come in the next half hour.KLIA next?

World's Most On-Time Airports
1. Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Japan (HDN): 91.4%
For the second year in a row, Tokyo's Haneda airport is far and away the leader for both on-time arrivals (88.6%) and departures (94.3%). In both categories, no other major airport comes close. Good thing, too, as it's also one of the world's busiest—more than 66 million passengers passed through Haneda in 2008, according to Geneva-based industry group Airport Council International (ACI). Additions of a third terminal and fourth runway may mean 30 million more passengers in the coming years—will performance levels remain so high?
2. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta, Indonesia (CGK): 86.7%
This year's most improved airport on the top ten, Soekarno-Hatta, jumped from last year's sixth slot thanks to impressive 84.2% on-time arrivals and 89.2% on-time departures. An estimated 32 million passengers passed through this busy hub in 2008, but airport officials want more. Construction on a third terminal is underway. Once completed, CGK will be able to double its passenger traffic.
3. Narita International Airport, Tokyo, Japan (NRT): 86%
Japan's other major airport has no reason to hang its head in shame. Though Haneda's sister airport dropped from the second slot in 2008, its numbers are actually up. Last year, NRT's combined average was 84.2%. This year, 84.8% of flights arrived on schedule and 87.1% of departures were on track.
4. Incheon International Airport, Seoul, South Korea (ICN): 84.8%
The best of this year's newcomers to the list is also just one of two top-ten airports with a better on-time arrival average (86.8%) than departures (82.8%). (The other is Phoenix, at number eight.) In fact, if this report considered just outgoing flights, ICN would take the number-two slot. More than just punctuality, Incheon is also known for its superior service overall: In 2006, Airports Council International named it the world's best airport.
5. Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand (BKK): 84.4%
Despite hundreds of flight cancellations caused by political unrest in November 2008, Thailand's busiest airport still performed admirably for the year. Up from the sixth spot in 2008, Suvarnabhumi welcomed 82.9% of its flights on time and bid farewell to 86% in a timely manner. Given that BKK is one of the world's 20 busiest airports, those numbers are even more impressive.
6. Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, Minnesota (MSP): 83.8% (tie)
It may surprise some Americans to learn that their airports are actually among the world's most punctual. In fact, four U.S. airports appear on this year's list. At number six, it's Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, which tied with Kuala Lumpur International Airport with an 83.8% average. More specifically, MSP put 84.8% of its planes in the air promptly and welcomed 82.9% within 15 minutes of their scheduled touchdowns.
7. Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia (KUL): 83.8% (tie)
Like most of its peers on this list, KUL is better at saying goodbye than hello. While 86.1% of departures left within 15 minutes of their scheduled time, just 81.5% of flights touched down on time. Still, considered together, that's good enough to land Malaysia's international airport in the top ten. And like most of its peers, KUL is expanding to handle more passengers and cargo.
8. Phoenix International Airport, Arizona (PHX): 83.2%
In more good news for travelers in the U.S., Arizona's PHX posted impressive punctuality averages. On-time arrivals and departures were nearly identical, at 83.3% and 83.0%, respectively—not bad for an airport that handled nearly 40 million passengers in 2008. That extra edge on take-off was enough to edge out Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which appears at number nine.
9. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Michigan (DTW): 83.0%
The Motor City may be facing a prolonged economic crisis, but Detroit's Metropolitan Wayne County Airport has pride of place among the world's most on-time air traffickers. Like Phoenix International Airport in Arizona, DTW treats its incoming and outgoing flights with equal skill—both averages were just about exactly 83%.
10. George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, Texas (IAH): 82.3%
It was a close call, but the airport named for President George H.W. Bush beat Hong Kong International Airport for the coveted tenth spot on the list of the world's most on-time airports. Houston's IAH welcomed 81.8% of its flights on time and said farewell to 82.8% within 15 minutes of their scheduled departures. For the record, Hong Kong was just 5/100ths of a percent behind.

rizalhakim December 11th, 2009, 09:27 AM Being an international airport, the whole of airport does not have any xmas decorations except for those tiny scale decors done by individual shops. This is very sad.

Cerulean December 12th, 2009, 04:39 PM KLIA Jungle Boardwalk
Date/Day: 26 November 2009/Thursday
Place: Kuala Lumpur International KUL
Remember I mentioned about taking my own sweet time and doing a little sight seeing at the Satellite Terminal when disembarking flight SQ 116? One of the thing that I did was to explore the newest attraction of KUL, the KLIA Jungle Boardwalk.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08278.jpg
For those who are familiar with KUL, the new structure which was erected circling the glass epicenter of the Satellite Terminal is so noticeable. This structure is supported by columns, which featured a very much elaborated design, which to me depicted the oil palm trees that Malaysia is so famous of – but looking rather out of place with the Kisho Kurokawa's overall design of the terminal.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08279.jpg
However, the structure now enables easy access to all 4 wings and sections of the cross-shaped terminal, especially for movements on the upper level area.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08280.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08331.jpg
Those who appreciate architecture like yours truly would definitely love to photograph the terminal from some new angles. For introduction, here are the 4 wings of KUL's Satellite Terminal:
i. The Hermes/O'Briens/Burger King Wing (LOL!)
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08281.jpg
ii. The Harrods/Starbucks Wing
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08282.jpg
This Starbucks café will be the Satellite Terminal's second, as there's already another one near the MH's Golden Lounge. As you can see, the new Cathay Pacific/OneWorld Lounge is located on the right side on the upper level, while the Emirates Lounge is located opposite it.
iii. The Old Malaya Kopitiam/Satay Club/Gold City Wing
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08284.jpg
The newly opened food outlets at the upper level area of the terminal really gives it a totally new look. It also makes the terminal looks 'crowded' too.
iv. And last but not least, the MH's Golden Lounge/Aerotrain Station Wing
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08288.jpg
Ok now back to the main subject, the KLIA Jungle Boardwalk is actually an improvement that was done to the jungle that the terminal has been nursing for the last 10 years. The airport authority (maybe) finally realized that they can capitalize on the jungle and maybe thought, "Hey, let's build a bridge across it and let the people come inside it. Probably this can give Changi's Koi Pond/Sunflower Garden/Cactus Garden/Orchid Garden a run for their money."
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08290.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08283.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08285.jpg
The entrance of the Walk is located behind the information counter past the aerotrain station, while the exit is located 180 degrees on the opposite side.
What can one expect inside it?
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08292.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o10/9MMAR/Abu%20Dhabi%2025%20November%202009/DSC08380.jpg
The jungle seems lush, like Malaysia's rainforest in the real wild. There's wooden pathway with iron railing snaking inside the area to ease visitors' navigation. The whole jungle seems well lit. I also saw a waterfall and possibly some animals too inside it.
I was told that there has been some delay in the opening of the KLIA Jungle Boardwalk, but it should be officiated very soon. There's gone my chance in exploring it at that moment.
15 minutes passed by, I soon made my way to the Main Terminal Building for immigration clearance.

nazrey December 17th, 2009, 08:14 PM MAHB retail revenue set to rise
By June Ramlee Published: 2009/12/18
MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) (5014) expects revenue contribution from commercial or non-aeronautical activities to rise to 65 per cent at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang by 2012.
Currently, 50 per cent of the airport's annual revenue totalling some RM360 million comes from commercial activities.
"We have spent RM50 million to renovate the retail space in the airport over the last 17 months to give it a new ambience and to keep up with the time as the airport is close to 11 years old," chairman Tan Sri Aris Othman told reporters after the launch of KLIA's Satellite Retail Optimisation Project (SROP) in Sepang yesterday.
Aris said the SROP involves the construction of a walkway through the forest reserve at the centre core of the satellite building and a circular viewing gallery at the mezzanine level.
Its renovation earlier saw the addition of new high-end boutiques such as Aigner and several international food and beverages chains.
Its in-house surveys showed that passengers who come to KLIA only spend RM36 per trip, which is one of the lowest in the world compared with other international airports worldwide.
MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the airports in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Penang are also being upgraded to increase retail space, but did not reveal the investment.
nazrey December 17th, 2009, 08:21 PM KLIA's Satellite Retail Project To Break Even In Two Years - MAHB
December 17, 2009 23:19 PM
SEPANG, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) expects the satellite retail optimisation project (SROP) at KL International Airport to break even in two years.
Managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid said MAHB allocated RM50 million on SROP in May 2008 to transform the airport beyond just its physical appearance by creating more retail space.
"Through this programme we have increased retail space to almost 50 per cent," he told reporters after the launch of the newly completed SROP by MAHB chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman at the airport here on Thursday.
"We hope with the improvement of the world economy and more people travelling, the average spending per person will increase and boost commercial revenue," Bashir said.
Currently, MAHB earned about RM30 million from commercial activities at the airport, he said.
Bashir said the company was also in the process of upgrading retail space in its three other airports -- Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Kuching International Airport and Penang International Airport.
"We hope to further strengthen the performance of non-aeronautical revenue to 65 per cent from 50 per cent over the next three years.
"We thought it's a good idea for us to have renovation on all the existing shops and rearrange the location according to the lifestyle of each area," he said.
For the first nine months of this year, MAHB's non-aeronautical revenue rose to RM592.434 million from RM522.264 million in the same period last year, while aeronautical revenue increased to RM564.857 million from RM488.322 million.
MAHB also has kick-started a new campaign to promote shopping at KL International Airport and the Low Cost Carrier Terminal.
"We are also extending this new shopping campaign to our other international airports in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Penang," Bashir said.

nazrey December 20th, 2009, 07:44 PM ATR opens logistic support centre in KLIA
Published: 2009/12/19
Regional aircraft constructor ATR has opened a logistic support centre in the free trade zone of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The support centre will be available to its operators in the Asia Pacific region who have contracted a global maintenance agreement (GMA), it said in a statement today.
DHL Support Chain, a global logistics company, will manage the centre within the framework of a global contract signed with ATR.
Apart from Malaysia, ATR has logistic support centres in Paris, Miami, Auckland and Singapore.
With the new centre, ATR said it would continue to reinforce its presence in Southeast Asia after the opening of a training centre last year, also based in Malaysia.
"The opening of a new centre in Malaysia is within our philosophy of getting as close as possible to our customers in order to be able to respond to their requirements in the shortest time," said Jean-Pierre Cousserans, the senior vice president of ATR Customer Services.
Close to 90 ATR aircraft are being operated by airlines of Southeast Asia, a region where ATR has experienced strong growth during the last few years.
Headquartered in Toulouse, France, ATR is the world leader in the 50 to 74-seat turboprop market. It is a joint venture between the Alenia Aeronautica(Finmeccanica Group) and EADS.
In 2008, ATR recorded a turnover of US$1.3 billion. -- Bernama

nazrey December 21st, 2009, 09:25 AM Latihan kecemasan haiwan terlepas
21 Disember 2009 Oleh KHADIJAH MOHAMAD NOR

BEBERAPA kakitangan sibuk dengan tugas
masing-masing ketika latihan kecemasan dijalankan.
MALAYSIA Airlines Cargo Sdn. Bhd.

Friday January 1, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has set the target of RM620mil in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation under its key performance indicators for 2010.
In a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, MAHB said the company also expected a decline in return on equity to 6.57% this year with the adoption of the FRS 139 financial reporting standard from 9.22% without the FRS 139.
The airport operator said it expected to achieve an overall growth of 3% to 4% in passenger movements in financial year 2010 despite the challenges and difficulties being faced by the airline industry.
Much of this growth is expected to come from the KL International Airport LCC Terminal, which imposes lower passenger service charge. — Bernama

nazrey January 22nd, 2010, 06:41 AM Customs on alert at KLIA
By MAZWIN NIK ANIS Friday January 22, 2010
PUTRAJAYA: The Customs Department is beefing up surveillance work at the KL International Airport (KLIA) following a sharp jump in the amount of drugs seized there.
Drugs worth a staggering RM62mil were seized last year compared to RM17.6mil in 2008, department deputy-director general (enforcement) Datuk Mohd Khalid Yusof said.
“The drug-smuggling activities at the KLIA are very alarming,” he said.
“We will also be keeping an eye on aircraft arriving from certain international destinations, and tourists of certain nationalities which we believe are involved in this activity,” he told reporters at a “Customs with media” session yesterday.
For instance, Khalid said most ketamine seized involved individuals from Trichy, India and also from several countries in West Asia.
He cited cases of drugs being stored in tins with labels stating that the content was tumeric from a supermarket in a particular area or district.
The “mules”, he said, were individuals wearing the same type of black shoes.
Khalid said his department was also working closely with Asean customs authorities.
“Our foreign counterparts will alert us if smugglers had managed to give them the slip and are heading for KLIA,” he said.
He added that drug smugglers had come up with various methods of concealment, including hiding the illegal substances inside television sets and computer CPUs.

KUALA LUMPUR: KL International Airport (KLIA) now offers more connections to the Middle East with the arrival of Iran’s second largest carrier Mahan Air, which made its maiden landing on Malaysian soil on Jan 28.
In a statement, Malaysia Airports said Mahan Air offered twice weekly flights from Shiraz to Kuala Lumpur and vice versa on Thursdays and Mondays, utilising A310-300 with seating capacity of 196 passengers.
The airport operator said the inclusion of Mahan Air raised the number of Middle Eastern airlines serving KLIA to nine, offering 64 flights weekly to various capital cities.
“Apart from these Middle East airlines, Malaysia Airlines also offers 16 flights weekly to the Middle East and AirAsia X recently started flying to Abu Dhabi with five flights weekly,’’ Malaysia Airports said.
Currently, the other Middle Eastern airlines flying to KLIA are Iran Air, Emirates, Gulf Air, Saudi Arabian Airline, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Kuwait Airways and Yemenia Yemen Airways.
Malaysia Airports said Mahan Air added to KLIA’s growing number of airlines to 59 and that it was confident of attracting more airlines to fly to Malaysia with its marketing effort.
“Mahan Air’s presence will further multiply the connectivity at KLIA, particularly to Middle East countries,” Malaysia Airports senior general manager of operations Datuk Azmi Murad said.
He said preliminary statistics of passenger movements from the Middle East sector in 2009 recorded 1.4 million passenger movements, a growth of 5.8% from the year before. Azmi added the sector was expected to to contribute a higher number of passenger movements this year.
“Mahan Air is pleased to provide this terrific new addition to our international portfolio and will offer our local and connecting passengers one of the most beautiful leisure destinations in the world,” said Mahan Air director of marketing and route development Hossein Hosseini.

cullen February 2nd, 2010, 12:44 PM Emirates lancar laluan KL-Melbourne
SEPANG 1 Feb.

Because Emirates already has SEAsian hubs at Changi and Suvarnabhumi. Unless either one of them pulls out, or Australia/New Zealand suddenly have a population of China to give demands, then its not quite feasible for the airline to create a new hub.
Two words: tight competition
cullen February 2nd, 2010, 05:42 PM eh? since when Emirates got secondary hub in changi/suvarnabhumi? as i know, changi is only secondary hub for Qantas and once garuda indonesia...
SHAH FIRDAUS February 2nd, 2010, 07:13 PM Changi and Suvarnabhumi is the two biggest airport in the region..it offers more connectivity and is considered as the preferred hub for most major airlines...KLIA has a long way to go before it can attract major airlines such as the Emirates to make it their hub...
emirates owned a company called Changi International Airport Services which it acquired back in 2004...so Changi is their hub for this region...as for the Suvarnabhumi is also one of their major connectivity points for this region

lesart February 3rd, 2010, 05:01 PM According to my travel agent friend, the ticket price for the KUL -MEL route is really competetive... almost comparable (or maybe slightly expensive) to Air Asia X.. I was quoted RM 1,800 for a return ticket, traveling in early march. That is only RM 200 more than Air Asia, on a legacy carrier that offers full meal, full service, longer seat pitch, and larger baggage allowance..
I think this service can potentially hurt MAS..

MALAYSIA. Malaysia Airports has organised a series of activities themed ‘The Forgotten Traits of the Oriental’ to usher in the Year of the Tiger at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The Southern Lion and Dragon Dance troupes will be putting on performances at both KLIA and LCCT-KLIA (Low Cost Carrier Terminal KLIA) at different intervals throughout February.
In addition, the ‘God of Prosperity’ will roam the airport, bearing traditional ang pow (red packets) filled with ‘fortune’ vouchers and good wishes. These gift vouchers will be given away at each walkabout session; they can be used at more than 100 retail or food & beverage outlets at KLIA and LCCT-KLIA with purchases above RM50 (US$14.60).
The Chinese String Quartet will also perform at the Main Terminal Building of KLIA today.

A series of activities themed ‘The Forgotten Traits of the Oriental’ have been organised to celebrate the Chinese New Year at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, including performances by the Southern Lion and Dragon Dance troupes as well as walkabout sessions by the ‘God of Prosperity’, who will give away ‘fortune’ vouchers to passengers and visitors
These Chinese New Year festivities, which coincide with Malaysia Airports’ ‘Take Off. Touch Down. Shop.’ campaign launched in December, aim to create a vibrant shopping experience at KLIA during the period of 12–28 February.
“We believe the Chinese New Year will usher in a lot of blessings and prosperity to our retail business partners and Malaysia Airports is bringing in the various cultural performances, a symbolic act to wish all good health, happiness, longevity and prosperity,” said Malaysia Airports Senior General Manager, Commercial Services, Puan Faizah Khairuddin.
Efforts are constantly ongoing to promote a shopping experience that is unique for shoppers, added Malaysia Airports. The airport company recently marked the completion of the Satellite Retail Optimisation Project, a RM$50 million (US$14.6 million) initiative that increased the commercial space in KLIA by +50% from to 9,271sq m. The 17-month project not only updated the physical appearance of the 11 year-old airport, but also enhanced the overall ambience and airport experience for passengers.
In the months to come, Malaysia Airports is also looking into bringing each festive season and key national events live to its airports

The new retail concept aims to cater to the growing number of motorsport and car enthusiasts in the Asian region.
As the official distributor of licensed Ferrari products in Asia, GP Asia first began selling motorsports items trackside at the Formula One Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix and the Formula One Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix in 2004. The company has since developed a fully fledged retail concept with stores in Singapore, Korea, Thailand and now, Malaysia. It has plans to expand in other Asian countries such as China, Hong Kong, Taipei and the Philippines.
It has pledged to deliver “a unique shopping experience”, from themed interior decor to a high level of customer service, with official licensed merchandise from core brands Ferrari, Lamborghini and Vodafone McLaren. Plans are underway to bring in more brands in 2010, including merchandise from Mercedes GP Petronas, Renault, Ferrari Cartorama, Gummibears, Moto GP, and various others.
Valiram Group Director Sharan Valiram said: “Malaysians are generally enthusiastic about the Formula One sport, and with exclusive brands offered at the store, motorsports fans will be spoilt for choice. Malaysians and transatlantic consumers will no longer need to wait for competitions in order to acquire officially licensed motorsports merchandise. Just race over to KLIA to browse through Podium Motorsports’ vast selection of products ideal for the home or office, or for gifts such as men’s, ladies and children’s apparel, accessories, gadgets, sought after collectibles and many more”.
He added: “Valiram Group is committed in bringing in high quality brands to the travel retail arena, and we are grateful that Malaysia Airports has always been supportive of our passion to bring in new and exciting brands to KLIA.”

SHAH FIRDAUS February 17th, 2010, 06:26 PM i still think that even without the LCCT, KLIA itself is need of a major upgrade in terms of service and it's facilities...they should make the main terminal more livelier and not just concentrate it at the satellite building.
there's still plenty of empty shop-lots at the main terminal particularly at the Anjung Tinjau...there's also plenty of times where the queuing at the customs check point is very long and there should opened up more check points considering they is plenty of those that were built but usually only a few that is opened..

SHAH FIRDAUS February 24th, 2010, 01:45 AM International award for retailer
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ
charlesf@thestar.com.my
ERAMAN Malaysia, the airport travel retail (ATR) business operators, won the Duty Free News International (DFNI) awards for being the best in the Best New Store, Confectionery and Fine Foods category, beating more renowned names like Chocolixir and World of Chocolate last year.
Eraman won the award for the Kidz Smart Tunnel, located at the Contact Pier of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang.
The award was a pleasant surprise for Eraman as the DFNI is part of The Metropolis International Group, which is based in London and is the world’s biggest travel-retail publisher.
“We deem it another feather in our cap since we first started operations 17 years ago,” Eraman Malaysia CEO Umar Bustaman said.
Umar said DFNI had also hosted events that brought together key players in the travel retail industry, including those from the airport travel retail category and therefore the award could be deemed as an international achievement for KLIA.
Eraman Malaysia began operations at the North Wing of Terminal 1 at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport before moving and expanding its business to KLIA.
The company now operates around 30 retail outlets, offering travellers a special shopping experience regardless of whether they are arriving or leaving Malaysia.
Umar said the company operated retail outlets at KLIA, Penang International Airport, Kuching International Airport, Kota Kinabalu Airport, the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal-KLIA and Labuan Airport.
“We have 38 outlets and our aim is to keep abreast of market trends,” Umar said.
He said the company believed in creating a sophisticated image and placed emphasis on brands that complemented the company’s image.
Umar added that the retail strategy at KLIA was focused on customer needs by adding a new concept of lifestyle emporiums like the Kidz Smart Tunnel, which is dedicated to junior travellers.
The site, opened in July 2009, was previously a children’s play area and has been transformed into a colourful and vibrant haven for kids, well stocked with the latest toys and chocolates.

nazrey March 10th, 2010, 12:31 PM M’sia can adopt ‘AirportCities’ concept of Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport: Mustapa
March 10, 2010, Wednesday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=15708
AMSTERDAM: Malaysia can adopt the ‘AirportCities’ concept developed by the Schiphol Group, operator of the Schiphol International Air-port, here, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang, says International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
They have a very comprehensive business model that can provide jobs to some 70,000 people.
“In the context of our country, we want to create high-paying jobs and business opportunities in the aviation sector, logistics and related services,” he told Bernama after visiting the airport.
Both the operators of Schiphol International Airport and KLIA have met to discuss the ‘AirportCities’ concept, said the minister who is on a trade and investment mission to three European cities, namely Amsterdam, Hamburg and Birmingham.
“I hope a comprehensive model can be implemented at KLIA to provide more jobs to Malaysians. This depends on our ability to woo local and foreign investors to create business opportunities around the airport.
“Anywhere in the world, airports will bring radical changes to surrounding areas. We’ve seen the sprouting of auxiliary and support services at KLIA.
“I hope close collaboration between the two airport operators will help hatch a practical model that can be adopted at KLIA,” he said.
The Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the biggest airport in Europe, provides a dynamic surrounding, with a commercial arena to multinational companies, hotel facilities, logistics services and other related services.
Mustapa is heading a 50-member Malaysian delegation to three European countries on a eight-day trade and investment mission beginning Saturday.
The Netherlands is the first stop followed by Germany and the United Kingdom.
The delegation comprises 17 senior state government officials; Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA); 13 private sector representatives; officials from the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA); and Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). — Bernama

March 23, 2010 13:58 PM
DUBAI, March 23 (Bernama) -- Royal Jordanian airline will resume flights to Kuala Lumpur at the beginning of June this year.
The three weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur will be operated via Bangkok using the Airbus A330, the carrier said in a statement.
The airline also said the decision to resume service to the Malaysian capital, was made in light of signs of a recovery and increase in tourism and commercial activity, to Malaysia.
Malaysia is considered a family tourist attraction for Arab countries, according to Royal Jordanian.
On March 28, Royal Jordanian will inaugurate its direct service to Madinah with studies showing the importance of serving haj and umrah pilgrims, directly from Amman to the Saudi Arabian city.

arepull87 March 25th, 2010, 12:11 PM why don't they used KLIA as the single airport for LCC and ordinary airline? why they need to separate it since KLIA has a lot of space and the capacity not reach the maximum capacity yet..the 29 million passenger include the LCCT user...anybody know KLIA alone handle how many passenger? sure the figure will not impressive.....
Leongylun March 25th, 2010, 05:39 PM Very simple, every terminal built will serve certain airlines only. For example, Changi airport has 3 terminals, only certain airlines will use certain terminal.
Back to KLIA, please don't get confused. KLIA is an airport, while LCC Terminal is one of the terminal in KLIA. So you will see Air Asia and Cebu landing in LCCT. This is because less facilities in the terminal, therefore they charge you lower airport tax.
Honestly, I do not hope to see low cost carrier to use main terminal and satelite building in KLIA. Because LCC passengers more or less will bring down the image of the whole buidling.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
