View Full Version : Hospitals and Medical centers in Greece
Skaros March 26th, 2006, 03:48 PM Though the health system still faces significant problems (among them the two most serious are the staffing problem and the bad mamangement ) the last 10-20 years many new hospitals were built and some older were renovated and have upgraded their equipment.
PLEASE dont post very small or very big photos . 800x600 would be the best.

NMBS1 March 27th, 2006, 08:53 AM Cosmos and Skaros, that is one VERY NICE looking hospital, any more pictures?
Here's what was said abou it:
In the report of Ms. Judy Mc Kimm, the Director of Medical Studies of the British University, it is noted that:
" The Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessalonica claims the title of the most modern and most equipped Medical Center in Europe. We have been very much impressed by the excellent technical and scientific level of the equipment of the center in a wide range of departments and units".
The report of Ms. Judy Mc Kimm continues emphasizing that:
" The group of the visiting professors expressed the opinion that the Inter-Balkan Medical Center of Thessalonica would be very suitable to become a University Hospital".
Giorgio March 27th, 2006, 09:00 AM best in the balkan! :okay:

Also, in the same area one may see the 413 Air Force Hospital. Both the 401 and the 413 have been built during the 1960's - 1970's and are amongst the best hospitals in Europe in their areas of operations.
Also, there are two other highrise hotels.
One is the private Hygeia Hospital (click HERE (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=164398) for photos), and the public Metaxa Cancer Hospital in Piraeus (again, plenty of photos HERE) (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=283680)

the daydreamer July 7th, 2009, 05:40 AM Well since I'm a Med Student I'm interested in reviving this thread. I noticed Greece is building new hospitals very fast during the last years: a lot of new additions, even in smaller cities, would result in a better healthcare.
Here two new very nice additions to the Greek hospital portfolio:
Kavala's new hospital, inaugurated by Health Minister Avramopoulos some days ago:
http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww320/daydreamer123_photos/3965_nosokomeio2.jpg
Santorini's new hospital, works started in January 2009 and according to the Ministry of Health should finish at the end of 2010:

greecelightning July 8th, 2009, 12:07 AM As I am also a med student, I'm happy somebody is bringing this topic up again. Many Greeks would have u believe that not much is being done in health care. The truth is quite the opposite. New hospitals are being built, and old ones are being modernized consistently. I did an away rotation in Athens at a public hospital and was impressed with the standard of care I witnessed. Of course, one could tell the system attempts to save money any way it can - but this is accomplished without significantly sacrificing patient care. While I'm sure many things said in the media are true, I witnessed none of them during my stay. In fact, the only time I've seen something resembling "fakelaki" was within my family and completely unprovoked by the physician. The physician actually refused multiple times before money was shoved into his pocket. I've also seen baked goods and pastries being given to doctors on islands. Whether this is considered required, expected, or a token of appreciation could be debated I believe.
One thing I am interested in is the salaries of physicians in Greece - particularly by specialty and health system (public vs private). Any info would be greatly appreciated, as I am considering moving to Greece after my rotations. (And yes, I realize I would be making much much less than in the US.)
the daydreamer July 8th, 2009, 03:42 AM Oh well great Greecelightning, so we're gonna be collegues. :) Well, I had some experience of Greek hospitals too and I compared it with my Italian experience, as I study in Italy (actually I'm half Italian), and I must say the standards are exactly the same. The thing is, all EU countries are quite low on budget because of the health system, everything is provided for free (well, almost) so countries cannot afford the same technology and salaries of a private system (e.g. the US). My grandfather had an AAA operation in Athens Laiko hospital recently (the building is very old, I think it dates back to the 1940ies, but it has very good doctors and professors) and everything went great and surprise... he had 5,5cm, and that's ~ 2 months waiting list in italian hospitals... well, in Athens Laiko he had his operation in just 3 weeks from the diagnosis. So again, what I want to say is that Greeks always complain, and they have the right to do so, but the Greek health system is as good as in other European countries. Did you know the UK sent for a long time patients in the Interbalkan hospital in Thessaloniki because of very long waiting lists in the UK? The Greek standard is pretty high in cities such as Thessaloniki, Athens and Patras, especially the first two, I suggest you go to one of those two cities when you come to Greece. Now I don't know what's going on in smaller cities like Trikala, Grevena or Chania, but again, many new facilities are being built there, and that is a great sign.
As for the fakelaki, well, my family doesn't have this mentality of fakelaki so we didn't give the doctor anything, and the operation went great. It is mostly people coming from smaller towns or the islands that have this kind of mentality I believe.
Now, another thing in favour of the Greek health system is the social part of it. My grandmother for example is blind, and IKA (Greek state health insurance) gives her some money every month (besides pension of course) for all her extra needs. Another great thing of European health system is that if you are a regular citizen of an EU country (Greece, France, Germany, etc.) and you go to another EU country, you get free healthcare for all emergency needs. Great thing when you're travelling across Europe.
Now you asked about the Greek salaries... for a physician in specialty training it's about 1,200€ a month, and for a trained consultant doctor or surgeon it is ~ 2,000€, but of course that depends on your age and position in the hospital. Professors and department directors earn more than that. Athens and Thessaloniki are full of private medical centres too, you'll probably earn more in those, I reckon. In the EU it's a good salary for a doctor, however in some countries it's higher (e.g. Germany, UK).
1821 July 8th, 2009, 07:01 AM I personally wish they would at least come up with some modern designs. I know they are just hospitals and the primary concern is providing health care, but still..
Arxitektonas July 8th, 2009, 10:55 PM I personally wish they would at least come up with some modern designs. I know they are just hospitals and the primary concern is providing health care, but still..
Errr, these designs are actually the epitome of modernity...I haven't seen anything more modern in hospital design actually, and most of the hospital designs i'vw seen in USA and UK are even worse...
the daydreamer July 9th, 2009, 08:13 PM Ok, during a break I had a look at the Ministry of Health website and I found lots of pics of new hospitals, some of them are really nice. What I also found surprising is the fact that many new hospitals, even in smaller cities like Kalamata (just 60,000 inhabitants), have a lot of ultra-specialised departments like special ORs for percutaneous coronary intervention which usually you find in bigger hospitals in bigger cities, even in other EU countries (usually towns with a population >150,000). Ok, now the pics:
