Tehran, IRAN: Iranian girls light firecrackers late 14 March 2006 in Tehran, during the "festival of fire", an ancient Zoroastrian feast held on the last Tuesday of the Iranian year, ahead of the Noruz new year festivities which start on March 21. Youth throughout the country have been massing dried bushes to set alight and firecrackers for the celebrations which date back thousands of years to Zoroastrianism, the religion of ancient Persia.

LONDON, March 15 (IranMania) - At least five people have been killed and hundreds injured in an annual fire festival before the Iranian New Year, the media reported on Wednesday, according to AFP.

Some 841 were injured in different places in Iran from the explosion of homemade fire bombs and firecrackers despite the police threatening to arrest anyone who threw explosives.

The student ISNA agency said the police have arrested 174 people, who will have to stay in jail until the end of the New Year holidays, which begin on March 21 and last for two weeks.

Why is noruz celebrated?

It is the first day of spring, and begins the Persian New Year which is celebrated by many countries.

Yes it is preislamic, its a Zoroastrian tradition. Its to expell bad omens/spirits etc from the previous year i believe lol
