G'day,

First post here, have had a read of a few threads and have enjoyed what I have read so far.

Looking back at previous edition Melways, 1978 and earlier. There was a section of the Eastern Freeway to terminate 500 metres south of the current terminus (Springvale Road), just near Spencer street and was to run parralel with Junction Road & terminate at Springvale Road (closer to Springfield Road). Looking at the current layout the land reservation still remains.

Does anyone have any further information as to why they planned that or anything else that may be useful?

The railway line that was to go in the middle of Eastern Freeway is another interesting reflection on this great stretch of freeway, just a shame it's tolled beyond springy road.

Comments most welcome.

that freeway is one of the primary reasons we've still got 100 odd level crossings around the city.

shame it's tolled? do you want to be taxed through the nose to pay for it then? I don't.

And that freeway is going to be the reason we're going to keep 100 level crossings. :(

..and as far as I know, it's only going to be tolled beyond Park Road?

It's tolled after Springvale Rd, as the tollway begins at Springvale Rd and you can't get on or off at Park Rd.

Anyway, here's a link to some infomation which will appear on my website later on: http://mrv.ozroads.com.au/fwy/eastern/history.htm

Everyone knows the money was there to build that freeway, no taxes would have been required, especially with the federal governments half a billion added. Please, the tolls are a joke and the Labor party won't get my vote.

Everyone knows the federal government would have coughed up half the original estimate for the freeway, which turned out to be a third of the actual cost. The Federal Government's share would have worked out to be 1/6th the actual cost, and that wouldn't have even remotely covered the budget black hole.

The Scoresby Freeway should simply have never been built. If anything, it was their policy in 1999 -NOT- to build it. No Freeway = No Tolls.

I have seen maps with it one there - it seems like it was just part of the interchange. It would have made it easier for traffic from the Eastern onto Springvale Road. It seems a bit like how the Morring Penn. Freeway joins onto the Mooraduct Highway. Perhaps they are going to upgrade Springvale Road to almost-freeway standard?
