andysimo123 March 27th, 2006, 11:03 PM £550 a month I might look into that sounds petty good. If not I'll sit on the grass with my laptop in the summer catch some rays and get some free Internet.
Should have really made an Alti thread because there is alot going on in Alti town centre. Behind tesco over the railway there is alot of building work going on and half of the old 60s high street is all about to come down for a redevelopment and also they have started doing up the train station.
The Longford March 27th, 2006, 11:09 PM The Tesco in Altrincham is brilliant.
(there you go shortsight - i'm not always negative)
I have seen similiar 'models' used elsewhere where they have limited space on brownfield sites. I hate Tesco's in principle but i'm really impressed by this type of format.

:) Just foolin with ya dude!

Alty has a lot going for it - Fosters buildings, Michelin Starred restaurant...you know, and that other stuff what he said. Might branch myself that way one day perhaps (checks his bank balance on the wap and puts that plan to one side for a while).
Your first pic reminds me a little of the British Gas buildings just down from LCCC ground.

I'm relieved about the train station. Last time I got on a tram from Altrincham I was profoudly embarrassed by the state of the station. It had seriously deteriorated over the course of the last ten years, and it wasn't particularly great back then either.
I assume Metrolink are at least partly responsible for the upkeep of the stations along their lines (or is it GMPTE?). If so, they ought to be lined up against a wall and shot for what has become of the stations along the whole of the Altrincham line. In the days when BR ran trains along that line, the stations were, by and large, quite welcoming places. However, catching a tram to or from any of the stations south of Cornbrook these days is a thoroughly depressing experience.
Anyway, that's a bit off topic.
Any chance of a pic from the Woodfield Road side when the opportunity arises, b4mmy? (My sister used to live on Woodfield Road but I haven't had a chance to get down that way on my last few visits so my last memory of the street is how it used to be.)
£550 a month sounds suspiciously cheap though -- I suspect that's for a broom cupboard in the less fashionable end of the basement.

I'd recon the station is Network Rail, they have ticket offices inside. Metrolink have their own ticket machines only use the platform and the rails. The other side of the station is also Network rail, so I expect them to do that side as well.

Network Rail owns the vast majority of the stations throughout the UK. The majority are leased to and managed by the various train operating companies. Network Rail only manages 17 of the largest stations (Piccadilly, Euston etc....). Altrincham will be run by one of the train operating companies.
The station is a dump though and needs sorting.
The Budenberg Haus Projekt flats are superb. Shite location though.

macc March 28th, 2006, 11:00 AM Hi all
I don't think I could live in a place with such a ridiculously pretentious name. It makes me cringe every time I read about it.
I does my head in when cities strive for these ultra arty farty areas that ultimately get populated by wannabes and media whores. They end up being detested by all but the minority, hanging around waiting for people to 'see them' there. thankfully they only seem to make it into the very large cities. Manchester seems safe for the time being.
hmm I'm going off on a tangent there, I think. I like the building but the name is awful. I picture whoever came up with it as being a man with an £80 hair style and being just that little bit too old to be wearing what he's wearing.
Farsight March 28th, 2006, 11:17 AM Oh well, macc. You carry on living in your squalid slum because you don't like the name. And if it makes you feel happier to slag off people who want to live in the 21st Century and make something of themselves, hey, that's fine.
Or you could read this.

Isn't the name taken directly from the factory/warehouse that has been converted as part of the developement? In which case the building name might be awful, in your opinon, but it makes it easily justifiable?

If thats true then it makes me feel a little better about it. Its just that speaking as a average joe public, the name comes across to me as a slightly patronising choice of marketing words. Its like that shampoo advert on TV with "extracts of crushed Pearls" Whats that about? Is that supposed to make me think it'll give me a posh hairdo? I may not have the IQ of Stephen Hawkin but give me some credit.
You shouldn't need to give a building a poncy name to entice people. It does the exact opposite for me. As I say though, Retep, if you're right and there is a strong link with the old name it does make it slightly more acceptable.
Its good that places like Alty are getting these building too, though. I think there would be plenty of people in the satellite towns more than willing to move into such places. I guess developers have a harder time getting planning permission though.

Not feeling this to be honest.
That area is just too industrial at the moment and although the design is quite wizzy it doesnt seem very 'site specific'.
Also think the connection with the old building is very clumsy.
I'm only judging this from bamford's photos and my memories of the area so i may be wrong.

Firefighters tackle apartments blaze
MORE than 40 firefighters were tackling a blaze at a luxury apartment block in Altrincham today.
The fire took hold at developer Urban Splash’s Budenberg Haus Projekte in Woodfield Road just before 11am.
Seven fire engines plus a number of support vehicles from across Greater Manchester were called to the scene.
The blaze is thought to have started on the 7th floor of the complex.
Early reports suggested no-one was injured.
Apartments
Urban Splash teamed up with architecture firm Foster and Partners to develop 290 apartments at the site, next to the Bridgewater Canal. The accommodation, rises from three to seven storeys, and ranges from one bedroom apartments to three bedroom penthouses.
More than 30 of the apartments at the site stand in the former Budenberg Gauge Factory, which was converted, during a large re-development project.
Fire chiefs and the police are expected to launch an investigation after the flames have been put out. A police spokesman said Woodfield Road was closed during the incident.
b4mmy July 18th, 2006, 05:58 PM Just had a quick look.
As you look at it from Woodfield Road, it the right hand building, so from the canal its the left building....
According to a fire officer its the top two floors of that building. There were 10 engines there this morning, and 5 when I got there. He said there was a lot of damage inside....

I guess they would be insured against this sort of thing? Hopefully it only delays things.

andysimo123 October 16th, 2006, 02:08 AM My mate has just got an apartment in these on one of the upper floors and they are amazing and so is the view. The amount of technolgy in them its silly. According to my mate if most services go down outside the apartments they can run off their own power, water, gas etc. He also says the internet connection is a 1gbps fiber connection.
Also I've heard un-comfirmed reports that the large warehouse and skate park next door are going to be turned into more of these apartments.

Winning design for Broadheath.
A NEW Altrincham building has been named a regional winner in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards.
Budenberg Haus Projekte, a housing development on Woodfield Road, was commended by the judges for its innovative and practical design.
RIBA said: "The jury felt that the design was a calm and confident example of its type, with a number of particular features which made it worthy of an award. The project was a significant design of consistent and assured quality."
The building joins six other new developments in the North West, celebrated for their high architectural merit and substantial contribution to the local environment.
The seven regional winners will now be put forward for RIBA's national awards in June.

It's Urban Splash isn't it? Tom Bloxham / Urban Splash bought a few of them when the cow parade was on - there are three or four in the Timber Wharf / Box Works garden as well as a couple on his Box Works apartment terrace. I presume it's just a few more for the Altrincham developments garden.
Potato Man May 20th, 2007, 02:40 PM Might be wrong but I thought the Timber Wharf cows, the ones you can see from the tram predated the 2004 parade in Manchester.
I know one of the Manchester cows is in the lobby of an office building on Whitworth St West, but can't think of any others still in the city centre.
retep68 May 20th, 2007, 03:02 PM Nope, I think you're probably correct. I was one of the first to move into Timber Wharf (circa 2002?) Anyway, the cows were always there.

I live just round the corner from this and popped into to ask them (sales office ) about that. Urban splash do own the grounds to the skate park etc but said they might just sell it on to another developer but nothing is being planned in the next couple of years at elast.

Aldi! A curvy roof as well. Anyway it's not so bad... but the prices are a bit steep. I looked at buying one about 4 years ago and they are crushingly expensive... £600k will get you a decent one... if there were any left, but they are all sold now and only available for renting. So there.
flange April 30th, 2008, 01:43 PM Ambitious scheme to replace canalside eyesore
By Chris Griffin
RENOWNED developer Urban Splash has drawn up ambitious plans to transform dilapidated Woodfield House in Broadheath, Messenger can exclusively reveal.
The award-winning company wants to demolish the run-down canal-side factory premises and replace it with an ambitious mixed use scheme that would include 194 flats and maisonettes.
The canal-side development would also comprise shops, offices, a creche, a new base for Trafford Rowing cub and 305 parking spaces, most in an underground car park.
The developer claims the scheme will enhance the important areas that border 70-year-old Woodfield House - the Bridgewater Canal, the grade two-listed Linotype building, a residential conservation area and the Budenburg Haus Projekte - a flats development by Urban Splash.
The scheme would be in four blocks and there would be extensive landscaping, including a central garden and courtyard. Each block would have varying heights 'relative to its adjacent context'.
In a report to Trafford's planning department, Urban Splash, which owns the building, said: "The quality, design and relatively high density of the proposal, however, would complement the neighbouring Budenburg Haus Projekte scheme and integrate well with the conservation area and listed Linotype building.
"The development and associated environmental improvements would contribute to the area by working as a catalyst for further regeneration within the immediate neighbourhood and the broader area, including Altrincham town centre.
"it would help to protect the quality, appearance and amenity of the established neighbouring residential areas and it would play a valuable part in the transition from the current outdated industrial use of the area to a strong residential-led mix of uses."
Residents, though, are concerned that only 305 parking spaces are proposed - 62 fewer than Trafford's guidelines recommend for such a development. The developer reckons that 'flexible' use of the parking area will mean there will be sufficient spaces.
But a resident said: "There is already an issue with parking on the roads in the area - this will only add to that.
"Urban Splash could help alleviate the problem by reducing their car parking charges in the Budenburg Haus Projekte. Currently it is completely unaffordable for most residents to park there - and so most of the time the car park is empty."

flange September 23rd, 2008, 05:55 PM Budenburg scheme deferred
12:11pm Tuesday 23rd September 2008
PLANNING bosses have deferred a decision on a proposed major development in Broadheath.
Developer Crosby Lend Lease wants to build 32 flats and nine houses on part of the former Budenburg Gauge site, off Woodfield Road.
But the planning committee deferred the application to allow the developer to address concerns over on-street parking problems in the area.
