Four Countries Share in the Construction of Qeshm Airport

Tehran, 5 March 2006 (CHN)
A joint consortium consisted of four Iranian, three Singaporean, Malaysian, and Australian companies won the bid of the construction of the second phase of Qeshm airport in BOT method (Build, Operate, and Transfer).

Following the sign of the contract between this consortium and Qeshm Free Zone Organization which is supposed to be finished this week, 81 million US dollars will be provided as finance for performing the project.

According to Mohammad Ketabchi, technical manager of Qeshm Investment Development Company, the foreign and Iranian companies which have won the bid of this project have sufficient specialty in this respect.

“This consortium is determined to establish a company in Qeshm Island and to register it,” said Ketabchi.

The bid for construction the second phase of Qeshm airport started from October/November. Qeshm Free Zone Organization decided to implement BTO method in order to follow the profit issue as well. However, due to the low aerial traffic in Qeshm Island, some companies which wanted to take part the bid, were afraid of the return on investment.

Anyway, according to Ketabchi, 22 international and four Iranian companies announced their readiness for the bid, which a lot of them withdraw from the bid due to the possibility of imposing sanctions against Iran.

“The project of Qeshm International Airport was studied by Airways International Company in News land and Qeshm Investment Development Organization,” said Ketabchi.

Completing the runway, construction the new Cargo terminal, infrastructure facilities, watch tower, fire fighting, terminal equipments, completing electricity and water pipes system, all are the programs in the second phase of construction.

“Due to the strategic position of Qeshm Island in the region, there is a positive future for the Cargo terminal, transit and airplane maintenance. The runway of the airport is appropriate for very giant airplanes such as Boeing 747. With establishing the second phase of Qeshm Airport, this aiport will be transformed into one of the main transit destinations in the Persian Gulf region,” added Ketabchi.

Dubai Airport is the most crowded airport in the Persian Gulf region. According to Ketabchi, one of the main problems Dubai Airport has is the heavy aerial traffic of this region which has made it difficult for fulfill services.

All the four Arvand, Kish, Qeshm, and Chabahar free zones except for Chabahar, which the construction of its airport have just been started, enjoy international airports. Moreover, Asalouyeh International Airport will be opened by the end of this winter.

The strategic location of this airports in Persian Gulf have attracted the attention of authorities to develop these airports in order to increase the aerial transit, fueling and other airport maintenance services.

Qeshm Airport will also receive an international licence from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) by the end of winter to further enhance its activities in the Persain Gulf region.

Qeshm Airport is equipped to NDB and DME units for directing the airplanes toward the airport. One of the airstrips of the airport is also equipped with PAPI system for directing the airplane towards this airstrip.

Fuel bunkering service up to 4 million litters is one of the other facilities of Qeshm International Airport compared to the other airports of the region which is an important factor for plances crossing over the Persian Gulf.

Official thread.

Some info to start off with:

Qeshm is the biggest island in Persian Gulf
Tehran, March 12, IRNA-Qeshm Island at Hormuz Strait measuring about 1,500 square kms is not only the largest Persian Gulf Island, but its area is equivalent to that of 23 world independent states.

http://www.payvand.com/news/06/jan/Qeshm-island-NASA.jpg
Qeshm from space (photo: NASA)

Enjoying great economic and trade potentials, the island of Qeshm is 2.5 times larger than Singapore and Bahrain.

Boasting lovely and calm coasts, white sand beaches and spectacular sunset, Qeshm is a gem-ringed paradise of coral reefs.

Historically, the island dates back to pre-Islam period, while such names as Qeshm, Keshm, Kish and Tunb mark the lengthy stay of Ilamids in the area several centuries before Christ's birth.

In the course of the national history, the island has been withstanding attacks launched against it, on account of its geopolitical situation, by Ilamids, Alexander the Great, Omavids, Abbasids as well as the Portuguese and British, whose detrimental consequences are still evident.

According to historical records, Qeshm Island was known as a trade and navigation center of great reputation.

Its economy flourished mostly during Dialameh and Alebouyeh eras, as trade vessels sailed between the Chinese and Indian seas and the African continent.

Even today, Qeshm has preserved its unique privileged position so that all the vessels heading towards the countries bordering the Persian Gulf have to cross the vicinity of the islands southern coasts and most of the flights originating from the eastern and western states go through Qeshm air space.

Declaring Qeshm as a free industrial and trade zone in 2000 and ratification of solid progressive laws aiming to increase the coefficient of reliability of domestic and foreign investors provided the most proper atmosphere and responded to the demands of international investors in making investment in the area.

Qeshm Free Zone mainly seeks to optimize the unique position of the island, convert it into a major economic and industrial hub, facilitate and promote export and import as well as the world up-dated scientific management and attract investment and advanced technology.

An official with the Qeshm Free Zone Organization announced that the Qeshm island is prepared to host over 1.5 million vacationers during Nowrouz holidays (March 20-April 2).

The city of Qeshm is situated at the eastern most point of the island and despite lacking a central position from geographical point of view, it has been of special interest since ancient time on account of its significant strategic situation, given its wide view to the south, north and east, the Hormuz Strait and vicinity to Bandar Abbas.

Qeshm Island with its marvelous human, natural and mineral potentials is subject to broad-based development. In addition to its unique geographical position, the island is also known for its tourism, industries and mine sectors.

The island is also famous for its wide range of ecotourist attractions such as Hora marine forests.

According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native birds annually migrate to Hora forests which is the first national geo park.

An ancient Portuguese castle, historic mosques, Seyyed Mozaffar and Bibi Maryam shrines, various ponds and mangrove forests are among the tourism attractions in the island, which sits across the azure waters of the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, several domes, salty caves, the preserved area in Shibderaz Village where turtles hatch as well as numerous ports and wharfs are among the tourist potentials of the island.

As the largest Persian Gulf island, Qeshm deserves special attention by the officials in charge. It can be turned into a major economic hub to earn millions of dollars per year if connected to the North-South Corridor via the 2,000-meter Persian Gulf Bridge.

This project has been proposed for ages, but I can't find anything more recent than this:

No Final Deal on Persian Gulf Bridge
TEHRAN, Mon, Jun 20, 2005 -- No agreement has yet been signed for the construction of the 'Persian Gulf' bridge linking the Island of Qeshm to Bandar Abbas port on the mainland.

Advisor to Managing Director of Qeshm Free Trade Zone Organization Mostafa Amin said on Sunday that the government is still in negotiations with interest parties, noting that the project would be highly job-intensive, Fars news agency reported.

Deputy head of the organization, Fereydoun Alimoradi said recently that up to $190 million is needed for the construction of the 1,800-meter bridge.
Firms from Japan, Germany and Austria as well as a number of Iranian companies had voiced interest in undertaking the project. Reports said Germany is likely to win the multimillion-euro contract.

The 1,800-meter bridge would include a highway and a railroad, giving it a possible place on the North-South corridor. Experts say the giant Persian Gulf Bridge project could become operational within three years provided foreign banks approve the required funds of over 500 million euros.

TEHRAN, July 19--A giant auto part manufacturing facility will be constructed on the Persian Gulf island of Qeshm, reported the Qeshm Free Trade Zone (QFTZ)’s public relations office, adding that the island will turn into the Middle East’s auto part manufacturing hub.
According to Fars news agency, the Qeshm Sapco Company, affiliated to the giant carmaker Iran Khodro, is in charge of constructing the complex in partnership with 15 international auto part manufacturers.
Some 100 hectares of the island’s industrial lands have been allocated for the project, which will include hundreds of car part making units.
Most international auto part makers involved in the project are from France.
Iran is the only Persian Gulf country manufacturing auto parts.
QFTZ has absorbed foreign direct investments (FDI) worth only $580 million since 2000. Foreign investments in the Persian Gulf island during 1993-2000 had totaled $450 million. The zone’s authorities say it has the potential to absorb foreign investments of four billion dollars.
Once Kaveh Port is completed, cargo unloading capacity at Qeshm would reach 30 million tons within 10 years. The island would have the ability to contribute effectively to the transit of goods.
Experts say the giant project called the Persian Gulf Bridge, which will connect Qeshm to the mainland, would become operational within three years provided foreign banks approve the required finance of over 500 million euros.
Economic activities in Iranian FTZs remain insignificant.

Should i also post this on the automotive thread :?

Pars Qeshm Airlines to bolster investment in Persian Gulf region

TEHRAN, Apr. 28 (MNA) – Pars Qeshm Airlines is going to be operational soon and will be playing a vital role in region’s air transportation, the outgoing executive director of Qeshm Free Zone (QFZ) noted on Thursday.

Fakhroddin Anvar also maintained that the island’s economic and trade potentials became more apparent when the recent development studies on tourism, communications and bio-technology industries suggested that improvement in the infrastructure sector would turn Qeshm into ‘an investment hub’ in the Persian Gulf.

Moreover, the Kaveh Port located on the center of the North-South Corridor has proved to be the most suitable point in the nation’s sea transit business he said, adding that the airline will ‘enhance Qeshm’s economic importance.

I'm not sure if the last post refers to a tunnel across the Persian Gulf, but if one is built then that would be a great step forward.

The bridge/tunnel combination would connect Bandar Abbas with Dubai. This way Iranians be able to drive to Dubai, and if we connect Chah Bahar with Gwadar in Pakistan then a huge volume of traffic from Pakistan would use the tunnel on the way to Dubai.

Beyond Dubai the existing road network would carry traffic to other Gulf states like Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman. This would be a way of integrating the infrastruture of the local countries and promote trade and tourism.

Collaboration between Iranian and Dubai based companies should undertake this venture and I'm sure the project will pay for itself with the tolls collected for the use of the tunnel.

Guys I know this is a little off-topic,

But because of fears with regards to rising sea-levels you think its possible to build a Giant Dam that would safe guard the coastline of all the Gulf Nations? and if so where would it be built?

Foreign ambassadors visit Iran's Qeshm FTZ

Qeshm, February 19 (IranMania) - Ambassadors and commercial attaches from 10 foreign countries on Sunday visited industrial, transit and tourism facilities in Qeshm Free Trade Zone, IRNA reported.

According to the Public Relation Department of Qeshm FTZ, managing director of the organization, addressing the representatives, said that the 20-Year Outlook Plan and the Forth Five-Year Development Plan (2005-2010) underline expansion of international exchanges through free trade zones.

Mohammad Asghari added that special strategic priority of FTZs including Qeshm is that they lie along the North-South corridor and near international waterway, therefore, have proper transit and industrial facilities to expand international exchanges.

Pointing to the infrastructures of the island to develop economic and international links, he added that given the abundant oil nd gas reserves in Qeshm and its villages, the region will become one of important hubs of oil and gas industry of the country.

Oil ministry and private sector are cooperating in the construction project of transferring crude oil from Qeshm to Bandar Abbas, he said, adding that private sector will obtain the ministry's permission to establish a gas refinery and oil refinery with the capacity of 120,000 and 160,000 bpd respectively.

Development of Qeshm International Airport was implemented at a cost of more than dlrs 84 million under a finance deal, and will come on stream soon, he noted.

Pointing to industrial, productive and tourist potentials in Qeshm, he expressed the organization's readiness to attract domestic and foreign investments, in particular in private sector through the participant ambassadors.

German Ambassador to Iran Hubert Honsowitz, for his part said that tax exemption, lower costs in customs offices and facilitating entrance and exit of foreign investors into and from Qeshm island are among the benefits of such FTZs to attract foreign investments.

A European delegation will visit Iran soon, he said, noting, "We will provide them with appropriate information in this respect." Joint working groups will be established to expand commercial and trade exchanges between Qeshm FTZ and the foreign representatives to pave the grounds for attracting investments.

Ambassadors and businesspersons from Germany, China, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia visited various projects in Qeshm FTZ.
