lol! that's so true. al-wakrah used to be the capital of qatar, or @ least the busiest town in the country, while al-bida3 (the capital before doha) was only a small fishing port.

New tennis court, I think, I sow a huge court covered from all sides like AL-Sadd stadium in an article, but it looks much better than AL-Sadd stadium, I don't know if they will finish it before the asian games though.

This just in: the roads that are currently under construction (airport, suhaim bin hamad, ahmed bin ali) are all temporary roads. Once the ASIAD is over, they will destroy it all, and rebuild them with bridges and tunnels as well. Does anyone know anything about this? This is the stupidest idea so far!

Yep, there are a crap-load of roads under works at the moment. I don't know any details, but the road redevelopment plan is separate to the Asian Games - just happens to be going on at the same time - the Qatari government/ Doha council/ whatever have a ten year roadworks plan, and it is just going ahead regardless of the Games...
So, I guess it is possible that - for roads which will be key traffic routes for the Games - if there are still works to be done, they might put in rudimentary and temporary sealed roads just for the Games...? Dunno....
They are also replacing or installing a lot of underground infrastructure beneath the roads (water mains, for example) so a lot of the roads will be pretty much the same (number of lanes etc) as they were before, but just "newer" afterwards...
... is what I have been told. :)
Cheers

dream on, qatar4ever, the money w'd goes directly into the pockets of the governemnet officials. haven't you heard lately about the corrupt palestinian officials who embezzled $700 millions of aid money?
well, maybe hamas officials be more honest & trusworthy over aid money, yet, i can't forget their disgraceful stand during 1990 iraqi invasion of kuwait.

Yeah during the invasion palestinians under arafat supported saddam and it is said that while iraq was destroying us from the outside the palestinians were destroying us from the inside.
What do you mean by that?
But, that was a long time ago. I THINK that relations have turned better since Kuwait funded many projects in occupied Palestine. But, nevertheless we should help the Palestineans since they are dying and US and Europe have cut fundings. Now I dont know much about Palestinean politics but I think Arafat's gov't stole a lot of money and got rich.

Yes I agree with u completely but my older friends that were in Kuwait during the invasion keep on telling me horrible stories. For example when the invasion was under way palestinians in Kuwait used wreck cars and houses of Kuwaitis.Another friend told me that the palestinians and iraqis used to hang his uncle on a marwaha or banka, switch it on and leave him there.U get my point? And most of the Kuwaitis wont forget that forever.

Margog, here is a little history about the Qatari flag
Below is a 1936 version of the Qatari flag:
http://fotw.vexillum.com/images/q/qa_old.gif
Qatari and Bahraini flags:
Despite the near-villification of this flag over its individualistic approach to proportions (11:28, a reflection of a "do your own thing" view of national policy?), there is a fascinating story here.
At first glance, the Qatar flag seems remarkably similar to the flag of Bahrain. Both have the distinctive serrated margin between the white band at the hoist and the "red" fly. The proportions set them apart (Bahrain 3:5) and the colors differ, with Bahrain being a standard "British" red (they, after all, had a strong and "involved" British adviser throughout the 1930s) and Qatar the distinctive "maroon." This similarity reflects an intertwined history.
To make a long and involved story very short, the histories of the two states have overlapped and occasionally collided since the 18th century. The distinctive Qatari flag emerged in the 1930s (official adoption of the maroon color came about 1949).
Bahrain's flag as we know it now was formally adopted in 1932 and the Qatari differences in size and color (said to be what becomes of red as it fades in the Gulf sun - a fanciful tale) seem to be largely an effort to make the Qatar flag DIFFERENT from the Bahrani banner.

well that a good story about the flag thanx man;)
we kuwaitis know that in the past there was groupe of ppl named al3toob (( al sabah, al kalefah and al jlahma familys ))
the bahrain flag was there banner when they go to kuwait frome qatar... when al 5aleefah left kuwait they save that banner for a long yaers but kuwait chaenge there baner to the ottoman flag and that was the first officiall banner in kuwait :)

we really need a new flag & national anthem.
our flag is similar to those of bahrain, dubai & ajman. people get mixed up. besides, i look at our flag & frankly i don't feel anything, it's only 2 colours, which i don't know, so far, what they represent.
wouldn't be great if we throw international competition to design a new flag which you feel a great sense of pride once you look at/and salut it?
as for our emiri anthem, we need a new one too. this one is long, boring & difficult to memorize. i bet thousands of qataris can't sing it till the end.
or at least, let them play the first paragraph of the anthem, it's only fair, i mean the national anthems of USA, kuwait & jordam are one of the longest one's in the world, but they play the first paragraph of it.
it makes me burst into laughter when i see the african players "almujanaseen" in our teams who move their lips only once the national anthem is being played. what a pathetic sight!

Guys you got it all wrong, sort of.
The red in Bahrain flag is a symbol of the bloodshed and wars that occured in bahrain. Same with Qatar flag, a symbol of the bloodshed in tribal wars. One means the blood of the ppl of land who fought to defend it, the other is the blood of the enemy who were killed on the land.
Both happened for the same reason, after a war they'd raise the flags as they rode their horses off battle, on the flags were blood which they'd show off after victory.
The pointy things, bahrain has 5, the 5 arkan of islam. Qatar has 9 because it was the ninth trucial state, the UAEs and Bahrain being the first eight.
Our flag is beatiful, its the only flag that has maroon in it making it unique. Whereas Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, Yeman and Oman.. etc flag look very much the same and not all can tell the difference.
I love our national anthem its beatiful.
The ruling families of bahrain and kuwait are 3anooz 3tban.
Jalhmas are more common in Kuwait and Bahrain and are treated very well by the diwan in both countries for the years of wars they fought togther.
Biggest tribe in Qatar are the bani tammam, they include al thank, al mo3theed, al ali, al wahybi, al kuwari, and al tammimi themselves, this is just to name a few.
We also have a lot of mirrah and hawjeer from the bedioun tribes.
But if we take passports and look at last names, we'll probably find al marrah as the most common followed by al kuwari.

Yes, about 10% of the population. However, I would think it is more, considering that a lot of Qataris are Ajamis and those don't count in the census cause they are already nationals, although they still know Farsi.
