I had never heard of these two projects before, yet both are well advanced. Two sets of twin towers in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.

Alot more projects for Bahrain..Not to forget the $1 billion Amwaj Islands (www.ossisonline.com) and now the $3 billion Durrat al Bahrain (www.durratbahrain.com) which are being constructed on reclaimed land off the Bahraini Coast line. Also projects such as $1 billion Al Areen Resort (www.alareenresort.com) and $1.5 billion Bahrain Bay (www.bahrainbay.com. Several more projects are being constructed all over the Kingdom. You can check them out if you wish in the Middle East Section (under Bahrain ofcourse).

Death of executives in Bahrain boat disaster will not halt work on landmark towers
By MOHAMMED GHASRA
2 April 2006

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) - The builders of a pair of landmark sail-shaped skyscrapers lost 16 executives and engineers when a cruise ship capsized last week, but the companies vowed they will press ahead in finshing construction.

The twin towers of the Bahrain World Trade Center -- now just a 50-story tall skeleton of concrete and steel on the coastline of the capital Manama -- have become a symbol of this tiny Gulf island nation's drive to revive its reputation as a banking and commercial hub that rivals booming Dubai to the south.

To celebrate the construction, South Africa's Murray & Roberts Group was throwing a dinner-and-dance party on the Al-Dana, a tradition dhow sailboat turned into a pleasure boat, when the cruise turned to tragedy.

The vessel -- which Bahraini officials have said was licensed only as a floating restaurant nor for cruises -- capsized with 130 people on board Thursdsay night while taking a turn in the waters about a kilometer (half mile) off the Bahraini shore. Partygoers on the top deck were thrown into the water, while those on the lower deck were trapped inside.

Fifty-eight people died -- 16 of them top executives from Murray & Roberts and the British engineering firm Atkins, including the World Trade Center project director. The dead included 15 Britons and 22 Indians as well as nationals from South Africa, Pakistan, the Philippines, Ireland, Germany and South Korea.

The head of Bahrain's prosecutors office, Osama al-Oofi, said Sunday that survivors told investigators that the vessel took "a sharp turn to the right," sending material and passengers sliding to the side and causing the boat to lose its balance completely.

Work has stopped on the World Trade Center site since Friday. But Samir Nass, vice chairman and managing director of Nass Corp., a top partner in the construction, told The Associated Press the US$150 million (euro124 million) towers remain on schedule for completion in this year's third or fourth quarters.

Reached by telephone in Houston, Texas, he said onsite managerial restructuring are being put in place before work resumes on the twin towers.

His brother and partner Ghazi Nass said the company will upgrade "safety precautions" at the on Monday and that normal construction activity will resume the following day.

An average of 1,000 workers are employed on the site, most of whom are Nass Corp. employees.

Bahrain's longtime Prime Minister, Sheik Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, called on Bahrainis to "positively cooperate" with the investigation he has ordered into the incident. In a statement issued after the Cabinet's weekly meeting Sunday, he said all those found responsible must be punished.

The boat's captain, an Indian national, is in custody for questioning, and officials say he was not licensed to pilot the craft. Authorities are still searching for one person, a Philippine woman, missing from the accident, an Interior Ministry spokesman, Col. Tariq al-Hassan, said.

Bahrain, a tiny kingdom on the western shore of the Persian Gulf and home to the U.S. 5th Fleet, has witnessed major development over the past few years, with infrastructure projects going hand in hand with economic growth.

Manama has been transformed from a relatively sleepy city to a sprawling metropolis that attracts tourists from the region and elsewhere.

A traditional banking center since the 1970s, Bahrain has been vying to lure more diversified investment and has managed to become a main venue for auto sports by hosting a Formula 1 Grand prix race, the sport's top event.

The landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with towers and glitzy malls sprouting up along the city's sea front coast. Now, it's dominated by the twin towers of the World Trade Center, to be the country's tallest buildings on completion.

Bahrain in the 1980s was what Dubai is now to the Gulf -- a relatively liberal nation where nationals from other Gulf Arab countries banked, took holidays and partied.

But a violent rights campaign in the mid-1990s by Bahrain's Shiite Muslim majority undermined its reputation for stability and coincided with the start of Dubai's rapid rise to becoming a key commercial and tourist Middle East center.

Bahrain, however, stresses that it's not in competition with Dubai.

"Our development in Bahrain is based on sound economic foundations and our property development matches economic requirements," said Zakaria Hijris, chief executive of Bahrain's Economic Development Board.

"We don't leap, we just take steady steps," he told AP. "Our priorities had not changed from the 1980s -- financial and banking services."

Ok here are some pics (I'll keep some for later). There were taken at the beginning of april:

Yup they are going to provide around 15-30% of the building's power. It's the first building in the world to have this. It's very efficient and don't worry, they ain't tacky ;).

This is the completed structure. Basically the core is complete, the only missing part is they triangle or pyramid on top which I assume is being produced now somewhere.

Am assuming you're talking about the World Trade Center. If so, these need another 6 months to be completed. At the moment it looks nice but there is a lot of concrete and the facade I'd say is 40% complete. It'll look much nicer come year end especially with those wind turbines.

Why would you be worried about that? You are not going to work in that building. As long as it looks good, I would say that the turbines are great additions to the towers.

This is one of the most AWESOME LOOKING buildings in the WORLD !!!!
Imagine what this building would look like WITHOUT the turbines :ohno:, then you will not worry too much about the noise.

the turbines arent there for aesthetic. they are supposed to serve a functional purpose whihc is to generate power, like windmills. i dont agree that it is there for aesthetic purposes only.

I never said it's there for asthetics purpose only. I said the noise may not be much of a concern given that it made the buildings look much more iconic. Of course I know those turbines generate powers, duh.

In a region where remarkable buildings jostle for attention, the quest for a skyscraper icon led the developer of Bahrain’s World Trade Centre to build 29-meter-dia wind turbines into its twin towers. The trio of turbines, the world’s largest on a building, may not add up financially as energy sources. But they will make the 240-m-tall “skycon” unique, while displacing up to 1,300 MWh a year of fossil-fuel power.

With elliptical floor plans, the concrete-framed towers taper like sails. Between them, three bridges span approximately 32 m. Each carries a 275-kW turbine, located midspan.

Together, the turbines will meet 11 to 15% of the building’s electricity demand. That will be equivalent to at least 55 tonnes of carbon emissions, according to the project’s local architect and engineer, WS Atkins Middle East Ltd.

Principal architect Shaun Killa spotted the energy potential of BWTC’s location, facing onshore prevailing winds, during a site visit three years ago. The client “immediately embraced” the idea of the turbines for the double benefit of the energy savings and the creation of an iconic symbol, says Killa.

A seasoned yachtsman, Killa had used his understanding of sail aerodynamics to research the best building profiles for turbines. The sail-like profiles, then designed, funnel wind into the turbines. And by creating negative pressure on the leeward side, the towers increase wind velocities. Killa knew the shape would be ideal, but he was surprised by better-than-expected performance during the towers’ wind tunnel tests.

The tests showed the wind stream to be nearly perpendicular to the turbines up to 45° to either side of their central axes, says Killa. It is an advantage that the blades cannot swivel into the wind, for it “widens the operational period, producing more energy,” he explains. “This effective envelope may prove to be wider, say 60°, during [turbine] commissioning,” he adds.

To engineer the elements of the turbines, BWTC’s undisclosed owner hired Danish structural designer Rambøll Denmark A/S, Copenhagen, in October 2004. Rambøll handles the bridge design, while Denmark’s Norwin A/S takes care of engineering, supply and installation of the turbines.

Fixed at one end and on sliding bearings at the other, the bridges weigh 77 tonnes each, including turbines. Viewed from above, the bridges have a modest boomerang shape so they stay clear of deflecting turbine blade tips, says Lars Thorbek, Rambøll’s project manager. In section, the steel-plate bridges are elliptical—5 m wide and 1.5 m deep. Because the bridges are heavy and on soft bearings, their vibrations will be “very small,” says Thorbek.

Turbine noise and vibrations were among the owner’s prime concerns, according to DTZ Bahrain, the managing and leasing agent. “We spent a considerable amount of time on the bearing design compared to the rest of the project because of the complexity of this component,” says Gene Redelinghuys, a DTZ spokeswoman.

The building’s main contractor, Nass Murray & Roberts Joint Venture, started construction of the $77-million core and shell in June 2004. The project was marred last March when 58 project staff and others drowned when their boat sank, as they celebrated the building’s topping out.

In September and October, subcontractor Almajdouie PSC Heavylift Co. Ltd. raised the bridges with strand jacks. Norwin then began installing turbines with a tower crane.

Two out of three nacelles have been installed,” reports Simha Lytherao, Atkins’ project manager on site. The third hub is due this month, followed quickly by all three turbines’ blades. The building is due to open in the first quarter of next year, according to DTZ. But turbine commissioning and fine tuning will go on for months.

By using standard equipment and arranging the turbines off the main structures, the designers kept costs of all wind energy-related elements to under 4% of the undisclosed total building value, according to Killa.

Investment in the turbine system amounts to $3 million, notes Redelinghuys. With annual operating costs of $35,000, the turbines will save the owner nearly $59,000 a year, she adds.

But including capital investment, “it won’t be able to pay for itself with the energy prices you have in Bahrain,” says Thorbek. “It’s a very costly way of producing power, but if you were to do it again, the price would go down.”

That could be soon. “We are... designing a number of single-tower buildings with even larger-scale wind turbine integration,” says Killa.

But before they get off the ground, Thorbek is already working on another job with three wind turbines, in London. Multiplex Construction (U.K.) Ltd., plans soon to start building the 147-m-tall, $200-million Castle House residential tower in the Elephant and Castle district.

Designed by local architect Hamilton Associates, the building will incorporate a range of features that would cut energy costs per apartment by up to 40% below the current U.K. housing average, claims Multiplex. Three 9-m-dia, 16-kW wind turbines, housed in Venturi tubes passing through the tower’s top, would account for a small part of that.

about the wings .. i think they would be heavy to rotate slowly , get energy and making no noise or threaten the stability of the 2 towers

I completely forgot about thsi tower, and it's progressed amazingly! I think the turbines are a brilliant idea, not only setting a good example by being eco-friendy...it does make the building(s) look incredibly beautiful.
I shall keep my eye on this thread from now on, can't wait to see the turbines go on! :)

MANAMA, March 19 (Reuters Life!) - A twin skyscraper complex in Bahrain has become the world's first commercial development to include large-scale wind turbines in its structure to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the architects said on Monday.

Builders have suspended three giant propellers between the two towers of the Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) that will supply 11-15 percent of its energy needs, or 1100 to 1300 megawatt-hours per year -- enough to provide light in 300 homes for over a year, architecture firm Atkins said.

"This is the first time anywhere in the world that a commercial development has integrated large-scale wind turbines within its design to harness the power of the wind," Atkins said in a statement

The 240-meter high towers are designed to funnel wind into the turbines, which measure 29 meters (32 yards) in diameter.

BWTC designer Shaun Killa said that solar panels available at the time of construction lost their efficiency at high temperatures, making wind power more viable in Bahrain, an island state in the Gulf next to Saudi Arabia.

"Bahrain always has a tremendous amount of wind... Every morning when the sun comes up it heats the desert in Saudi Arabia, which draws in air from the Gulf. The wind in Bahrain is extremely consistent," Killa said at a news conference.

The turbines are due to undergo testing throughout 2007, BWTC's designers said. The building itself is due to open for business in the second half of 2007.

Atkins celebrated a world first today

Atkins celebrated a world first today, with the installation of the turbine blades onto Manama's Bahrain World Trade Center towers.

The installation of the 29 metre diameter turbine blades represents a culmination of over three years of intensive research and development by Atkins architects and engineers in association with Danish partners Ramboll and Norwin.

The Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) is a pioneering stride for environmental architecture, the first building in the world to incorporate large scale integrated wind turbines which comprehensive ground tests indicate will generate 11-15% of the energy requirements of the two towers.

Shaun Killa, Head Architect and Design Director and the creative brain behind the Atkins design, believes the research and design for the Bahrain World Trade Center has set the precedent for sustainable architecture around the globe.

The BWTC is a significant project which showcases a particular technology that¡¦s set to become a very important component of sustainable design in the future. It serves as a model for an environmentally-conscious design and helps pave the way for future projects to also integrate energy from wind power. ¡¥Sustainability¡¦ is a principal upon which we must build the foundation of all future developments,¡¨ he said.

From buildings like the BWTC, to railways to education, Atkins is at the forefront of incorporating sustainable design into the built environment.

Atkins is spearheading a number of initiatives within the company to raise awareness of sustainability within the psyche of our architects and engineers. This project serves to highlight how with determination and willingness on behalf of responsive clients we can actually turn these ideas into reality,¡¨ adds Tim Askew, Regional Managing Director.

The BWTC design blends maritime aesthetics with the functionality of traditional wind-towers. The visually striking sail-shaped towers form a commanding silhouette on the skyline of Manama, and serve to channel the strong on-shore winds directly onto the turbines.

Atkins expertise extended from concept design right through the life of the project, with a diverse team of engineers playing a significant role in achieving this remarkable feat.

The three wind turbines are horizontally supported between the towers by three bridges weighing a substantial 65-tonnes each,¡¨ noted Atkins Senior Project Manager, Simha Lytherao.

On schedule to open this year, the 50 storey, 240m high office complex, which also features a major shopping mall with sky lit courts providing centrepieces of relaxation, is currently going through completion stages with office and retail tenants poised to undertake their own fit-outs.

The Atkins designed Bahrain World Trade Center (BWTC) made history today as the turbines were turned together for the first time.

The three 29m-diameter turbine blades on Bahrain’s iconic landmark are the first in the world to be integrated on such a scale into a commercial development and are forecast to provide the equivalent of 11-15% of the power for the two towers when fully operational. The successful rotation of the blades involved collaboration between Atkins architects and engineers and turbine specialists Norwin, who were in Bahrain for the milestone event. “Having all three turbines spinning simultaneously represents an historic achievement for this landmark project and Atkins is excited to have been a major player in turning the original idea into reality” says Simha LytheRao Senior Project Manager for Atkins in Bahrain.” The use of established technologies, including type-tested turbines with minimal modifications, ensured that the additional cost incurred by incorporating turbines into the project was reduced to around 3.5% of the overall project value, making it not only an environmentally responsible but also a financially viable venture.” The BWTC design blends maritime aesthetics with the functionality of traditional wind-towers. The visually striking sail-shaped towers form a commanding silhouette on the skyline of Manama, and serve to channel the strong on-shore winds directly onto the three spinning blades.
Atkins’ holistic expertise extended from concept design to through life of the project, with a diverse team of engineers playing a significant role in achieving this remarkable feat. Incorporating large-scale turbines onto a building is a world first and during the upcoming months the turbines will undergo detailed analysis and optimisation by turbine specialists Norwin to determine their actual generating potential. The turbines are expected to operate approximately 50% of the time.
The BWTC project establishes a technological precedent which is set to raise the awareness of environmental design and its importance in the built environment and pave the way for designers and clients to incorporate renewable and energy efficient measures into their future developments to reduce carbon emissions.
The BWTC project has received international acclaim for its commitment to sustainable development, being awarded LEAF Awards 2006 for ‘Best Use of Technology within a Large Scheme’ and recently the Arab Construction World ‘Sustainable Design Award’. These accolades recognise the achievements of developments whose raison d'être is environmental protection and improvement, and provide public recognition for the individuals and companies who have attained the highest standards within the design and construction industry.
