View Full Version : From Canada to Brazil.... with love! :)
Taller, Better March 29th, 2006, 05:34 PM Here are some photo's I took on my recent Brazil trip.. I would like
to thank all the people I met on my trip as I was treated with royal
hospitality and friendliness everywhere, despite the fact I look
distinctly non-Brazilian! Brazil is a breathtaking country, and this
time I visited only São Paulo, and one of my favourite beaches in
the world, Ihlabela. The first thing you notice when you land in São Paulo
is the sheer immensity of this city of 19 million souls...
I have tried to roughly group these pix, but some may be a bit
out of order. I was lucky to travel very extensively throughout the
city, and also stayed in a suburb which gave me a real feel of the
lifestyle. A big Obrigado to the good folk of São Paulo and I hope you
all enjoy the pictures!!

I hope you liked your trip!
rise_against March 29th, 2006, 07:26 PM I wanna go now...looks beautiful and friendly. I wish Brasil was closer to Canada :D
Taller, Better March 29th, 2006, 07:32 PM Thanks guys! Glad you liked the pix! I took around 500 so it was hard to narrow it down. The flight is not so bad... about 10 hours from Toronto, and it is overnight so you can sleep. If you are into cold beer, delicious caipirinhas, gorgeous people, amazing music, dancing and exotic beaches, then it may be for you!
I made it my mission to personally inspect the inside bottom of as many Bohemia beer bottles as was humanly possible!! ;). Best way to cool down a sweaty gringo!
tkr March 29th, 2006, 08:54 PM :)
So, you came alone, rite? And are you planning to come back? :) If yes, I suggest you to try southern Brazil next. Florianópolis and the cities around it... good cities, great beaches and nice people.

No, I went with my partner who is from Brazil originally. I will probably come
back to Brazil once a year. I just assembled a small kit which I can use
to cheer Brazil this year at the World Cup! LOL! Normally I only cheer for
England, but I see no reason not to cheer for two countries...

schmidt March 30th, 2006, 12:12 AM Hey! I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and liked our country so much.
Sao Paulo's hugeness is amazing, I can't imagine someone in SSC that wouldn't get hypnotized by it. I don't know Ilhabela, but my dad's already been there and he only talks marvels about it, must be really wonderful.
Thanks for the pics, they don't only catch our cities, beaches and architecture, but also a bit of the Brazilian soul and lifestyle.
Luis_RiodeJaneiro March 30th, 2006, 12:50 AM Taller, as a brazilian i´m flattered by your kind words about my country and its people ! I´m so glad you enjoyed a lot your trip ! But, next time...COME TO RIO !!!!!!!!how come you come to Brazil and doesn´t come to Rio ! São Paulo and Ilhabela are great, for sure, but in Rio you will get astonished by its beauty !!! :-)))
AJ215 March 30th, 2006, 01:51 AM great pics..
Smileyface March 30th, 2006, 01:54 AM Amazing photos, thanks for those. I'll be landing in Sao Paulo on Easter Sunday for my first ever visit to the city and in fact to South America and I just can't wait. Expect a similar thread from myself in about a month when I get back to the UK :)
diogoap March 30th, 2006, 02:44 AM Oh! Nice view of São Paulo! Thanks for share this pics! :okay:

Thats for everyone!
ditto March 30th, 2006, 06:58 AM Thanks for the pics. Brings back great memories from my trip to Brazil as well.
If my friends want to escape to warmer weather I tell them to skip the Caribbean and head for Brazil, it's worth the 10+ hour flight (from Toronto)!
AcesHigh March 30th, 2006, 07:22 AM dont come to souther Brazil outside the summer... tomorrow temperature at morning will be 6C in Porto Alegre... :)
nice pics, the only weird thing is that you dont expect foreigners to go to São Paulo on vacations (usually they go to Rio or to the northeast states)
I am not sure, but autumn (march, april, may in southern hemisphere) is kinda rain season in a big part of the coutnry... may not be good for beaches, but I guess its great to visit the IGUAZU WATERFALLS.
No really... you canadians must go there and then come back here to tell your own comparassions with Niagara :) (without bias of course ;))
despite the fact I look distinctly non-Brazilian
Really, that isnt true. Brazil really has all races, although the predominance of each race or mixture varies greatly among brazilian states. If you mean you look non brazilian for being tall and blond/blue eyed, you may think differently once you go to Santa Catarina or Rio Grande do Sul states...
AcesHigh March 30th, 2006, 07:29 AM btw, TallerBetter, can you post this thread on Skyscraperpage.com????
Taller, Better March 30th, 2006, 05:11 PM I'll check it out; I had never heard of skyscraperpage.com.
Next year I think we will also travel to Rio, and Salvador too as my
favourite music and dancing comes from Bahia. Again, thanks for
all the nice comments everyone, and here are a few more pix from
my collection, starting out with a taxi ride in a Volkswagen, which
was an exciting first for me! In fact, most car/bus/taxi rides in SP
tend to be on the exciting side due to the driving habits! ;) Those
are probably my white knuckles you see in the picture! This guy
drove FAST. :runaway:

more capoeirai... the music and rhythms are hypnotizing, and show the strong
influence of African music and dance. I think this type of dancing came from
the North coast of Brazil, but I could be wrong:

I would recommend a visit to Brazil for anybody... the kindness, warmth,
and generosity of spirit of the people I met was unforgettable. As for the
safety factor, be careful and don't walk down empty streets at night, but don't let it stop you seeing the city. Just keep your wits about you and don't
draw attention to yourself with money, etc.. especially if you see street-
kids nearby. I find it difficult anyone could visit Brazil and not fall in love with
it!
AcesHigh March 30th, 2006, 06:19 PM I am not sure where capoeira appeared, but basically, it was created by the slaves, because the masters woulnt let them train fighting or anything like that (which could be used in a revolt). So the slaves created capoeira, which is a martial arts camouflaged as DANCE! And the masters would think "look how interesting these african lowbeings dance to express their primitive cultures" then WAAAAH, a kick in the neck of the master and he is DEAD!!! :)
AcesHigh March 30th, 2006, 06:20 PM dude, did you drink anything but beer?
Arpels March 30th, 2006, 06:21 PM Ilha Bela is a paradise
AcesHigh March 30th, 2006, 06:24 PM private beaches are forbidden in Brasil. All are property of the navy if I am not mistaken, and open to the public. But since Figueiredo was a militar dictator (there were several, they were elected inside the militar college and served X years terms), I guess he managed to get to himself something form the navy... but it cant belong to him any longer.
Taller, Better March 30th, 2006, 06:36 PM dude, did you drink anything but beer?
Of course! Sometimes I drank ice cold Guarana, and once or twice I
bought a bottle of water ;)
Thanks for the history on that dancing. Reminds me a bit of when
you go into a Voo-Doo shop, they sell a lot of what appear to be
Catholic icons. My partner explained to me that at one time it became
illegal to worship the traditional Gods and Goddesses (example Oxum),
so people would substitute statues of Catholic saints to be acceptable,
but everyone knew that saint actually represented one of the old Gods.
The Voo Doo shop was sooooooo cool, and even if I am not particularily superstitious, I made sure I put some money on this guy's plate... just to be safe! ;)

The actual sandy beach is not his, but his family owns the land just up from
the beach. It is forbidden in Canada too, and in most countries to actually own the beach area along the coast. I shouldn't have used the expression private beach for that is incorrect! :)
Shock and Awe March 30th, 2006, 09:29 PM It looks wonderful! Great set of pictures. What is the cost of living like over there?

Taller, Better March 31st, 2006, 04:14 AM It looks wonderful! Great set of pictures. What is the cost of living like over there?
Cost of living is quite inexpensive... things like food and entertainment are
less than half of what it is in Canada, and therefore 1/4 of, say, Britain. Anything imported to Brasil is very expensive... moreso than here.
@nouvellecosse, thanks!! Glad you liked!

I sincerely doubt if it is possible to go to Brasil and not have fun.. it is a
very contagious type of excitement. Even the suburbs are hopping.... they
are not the same as suburbs in North America- everyone is out on the sidewalks at night... sitting by their motorcycles, singing in outdoor bars...
whistling, blaring loud music from speakers strapped on the top of their cars,
squealing their tires, doing wheelies on their bicycles.... it just never stops
til the very wee hours of the morning. And that is waaaaaaaaaaaay out in
the sticks, many many miles from downtown. Plan a trip there!!

Have you been to Brasilia? I say it's pretty close to N.A. because its so car oriented. The city has some interesting architecture though
Bruhno BSB April 1st, 2006, 03:37 PM ^^ Yeah... it's true. But I really love my city. Have you been to Brasilia?
Well, I know a white and blonde canadian guy that got married with a brazilian woman here in 2003 (I think). Are you this person?

Liam-Manchester April 1st, 2006, 07:24 PM Great pictures- I would love to go to Brazil one day. On top of all that beauty and such a vibrant culture the Brazilians are also brilliant at football. It amazes me the amount of talent that comes out of Brazil, and they always play with such flair, I think it reflects a very special and unique country.
ditto April 1st, 2006, 09:57 PM "Well, I know a white and blonde canadian guy that got married with a brazilian woman here in 2003 (I think). Are you this person?"
Nope, I'm not him. I went to Brasilia last year and stayed in the hotel district for a few days. My first surprise was there is no true downtown centre. So I didn't get a chance to really explore the city. I went to usual tourist sites, parliament building, performing arts centre, Porcao =), the entertainment district by the lake, etc.
Taller, Better April 2nd, 2006, 08:37 AM Never been to Brasilia, but some day! I studied it a bit in some urban planning

Brasilia is a unique and very young city, too bad I couldn't stay longer than 3 days since I had to return to rio de janeiro for business.

These are a couple of pictures I snapped yesterday in Toronto, that reminded me
of Brasil... they sent a gentle warm breeze over me. So, this is a bit of Brasil in
Toronto, and for my Brasilian friends!

I have not bought Brahma here, so I am not sure, but I am
thinking it is the same as I believe it is imported from Brasil.
A very old Canadian brewery, Molson, bought Bavaria a
few years ago, and lost a ton of money. They recently sold it.
I will do research on the matter, and report back!!

Ouch, look at the guys leg!
AcesHigh April 18th, 2006, 09:55 AM wow, he must have broken it in several places.
I have a friend who had those things in his right arm when in highschool. During vacations, he was in a bus and put his arm outside the bus window. The bus made a curve and his arm hit a eletric post. It cut his arm in two places, and it got hang by just ONE TENDON! He showed the pics... horrible!!! He had to hold his right arm with his right hand else it would fall... he went in a chopper to the hospital and they made surgeries and reconstituted the tendons and such. He spent one entire year with those metals holding all the little fracture bones together. You cant believe how well his arm healed. He was playing basketball just one and a half year later... if you see the pics of his tored apart arm, you wouldnt believe. All that is left now is a big scar.

by the way, Brahma has done extremely well here, and sells a lot of beer. I buy
my fair share of it!! ;) It is brewed in Rio, I believe, and I never once saw it in Sampa
Bavaria never did so so well here, but is still available. You can't get Bohemia here, sadly.

Rio has beautiful beachs like Copacabana, Ipanema, Recreio... Beside you can find museum, park etc. too.
However, Salvador has a big historical center and some interesting places (abaeté lagoon, Bonfim Church etc.).

For the beer freaks out there:
Of the mainstream Braz beers, Bohemia, Serramalte and Original are definitely the only minimally decent brands. Now they make both Heineken and Stella Artois in Brazil (Halleluja!) Stay away from other mainstream Braz beer if you like your beer medium to full-bodied.
Keep in mind that 99% of Brazilians only drink lager -- Braz-style, that is. And I'm not kidding here. If you are into stouts, Xingu is a sure bet still in the mainstream league.
Other than that, go for the micro-brewery brands. They make decent beer across the board. Those include Eisenbahn, Baden Baden, Devassa and are now found at every grocery store in São Paulo and Rio, as well as at some more renowned pubs, if you're willing to pay extra, that is.
Now, if all you're looking for is to cool off in the scorching hot weather, just order a good old Braz draft beer (chopp) and have a laugh.

imho, the best beer sold at supermarkets is POLAR, but its only sold in Rio Grande do Sul. Even its adversitings are about the fact it isnt sold anywhere else.
pRAMHY364Is
for the foreigners:
the two guys ask the girls "hi, where are you from?" and the girls say "São Paulo"
Then they imagine the life in São Paulo. Crowding, pollution, traffic jams (there is a little catch in that scene, the two guys in the front seat and the two girls in the back seat. In the entire Brazil, if the two guys go in the front seat and the girls in the back, its called "paulista´s car".)
Of course, the REAL PROBLEM starts when they discover POLAR BEER is NOT SOLD IN São Paulo! So they dismiss the paulista girls and go flert with some nice gaúchas (like themselves)

joseharoldo March 26th, 2008, 03:45 AM Thanks guys! Glad you liked the pix! I took around 500 so it was hard to narrow it down. Sorry if it offended... I was told it was similar as a translation, but obviously that is wrong. Voodoo also came from Africa. To be honest, finding people who speak English in Sao Paulo is not easy.. the city is not really geared toward tourists, and I only heard it being spoken about two or three times in the entire week.
AcesHigh March 26th, 2008, 06:32 AM Sorry if it offended... I was told it was similar as a translation, but obviously that is wrong. Voodoo also came from Africa. well... voodoo is a different afro religion. Whatever. I really dont care about any religion.
if you are interested in researching of course, there is always the mighty Wikipedia :D
After researching come back and explain to me the differences! :)
Taller, Better March 26th, 2008, 03:51 PM Granted they are different, but the art of "casting spells", etc.. is also done in this religion, so I am not entirely certain why the comparison to "voodoo" would be considered insulting. My b/f is from Brazil and said it is very common where he came from for, example, a woman who has a cheating husband to go to the Pai de Santo and get a spell cast on him. The religions may be different, but I suspect they are both from the same original roots. These African derived religions are known in the Caribbean, New Orleans, as well as Brazil. However, if someone finds it insulting, please excuse the comparison.
I remember visiting a voodoo shop in New Orleans, and it was fascinating.
AcesHigh March 26th, 2008, 04:34 PM its absolutely not insulting to me.
I think most brazilians wouldnt mind you comparing the two afro-religions, but some of them would like you just to know they are not the same thing.
as for the people who DO believe in such religions... it may be a big insulting maybe. Like some alien thinking Islan and Chrstianity are the same religion...
(and well, from a atheist point of view, they really are!! :D)
But I am propense to worship Kthulhu!
Taller, Better March 26th, 2008, 05:41 PM Anyhow, I won't make an issue about it, but I was surprised one could feel hurt from the comparison to voodoo, which is much more known in our culture. Islam and Christianity are from two entirely different roots. I am not getting the feeling that this is the same case here. Seems to me more like the comparison of two types of Christianity. My b/f was a bit surprised when I told him, too. There are so many links between the cultures of the region.. Caribbean, Northern parts of Brazil, even New Orleans that go back to the common origin of Africa, and to the slave trade. Food, music, dance, and to a degree these older religions.
iemanja June 25th, 2008, 06:20 AM I love your thread about Brazil and how respectfull you are about the country. Ilhabela is fabulous. I really like those Candomble/Umbanda houses too. I am not into those religions but I find those figures very attractive for some reason. My dad is obsessed with Afro-Brazilian religions and he gave me this name, Iemanja. People think it is weird, my life would be easier if my name was Janaina...
Congratulations, you seem to be very sensitive and you captured beautiful moments. I will go to Brasil in December, I can't wait. I will visit your photoblog.
Thanks for those pictures. I had tears in my eyes, for a moment, so many memories and familiar places...
:)
Taller, Better June 25th, 2008, 06:25 AM Thank you! I had a marvellous time in Brazil, and am hoping to go back this winter. It is an incredible country and I was treated extremely well. I was pleased with how some of the pictures turned out, as the camera I had at the time was a very small, simple one. Next visit I look forward to seeing Rio and perhaps Salvador!! :)
Brazil_Gold Coast June 25th, 2008, 07:02 AM ^^ Cool! Tonight I will show this thread to my partner. Maybe I'll convince him to go to Brazil with me soon...gee we've been together for 4 years and he just does not want to come to Brazil with me! Probably because my father is still too "close minded" if you understand me, but his idea of a holiday is sun and beach and Brazil is just fantastic for that!
I'm glad you enjoyed Brazil. You should come to Australia sometime soon. Amazing looking places over here as well, very laid back and quite similar to Brazil in a lot of things...brazilians here say it is the "Brazil where things went right"...
speed_demon June 26th, 2008, 04:55 AM I wish there were foreign forumers in Sao Paulo right now just to post their impressions about the city in this year time because people usually come over here in the summer and dont have idea of how much cold the city is in the winter, with temperatures in the morning of 4ºC, then going to 12ºC at mid day and then decreasing again in the night. Ok, If you are from Canada and are acustomed to -20ºC, these n00b temperatures of Sao Paulo are not that much impressive, but for who's from a country that is not that cold and come to Brazil thinking it will only find sun and hot weather would have a surprise to know they'll be landing on a freezer.
Anyway, people must visit the city because it's indeed impressive by its size and there's also no problem coming here in the winter because people are friendly and warm. Me for example, I never deny any information for tourists, no matter the language, no matter the color, no matter what, If there is anyone asking me for info, I'll always treat the person very well. We're naturally friendly, specially in SP where most of people have italian background, we're all polite. :okay:

^^ Nowadays, you won't find something like that in anywhere within São Paulo, because of the new law ("Clean City") which prohibs all kinds of advertisings, banners, billboards etc. in the city. The law also restricts the size of the symbols of stores.

sipriano August 31st, 2009, 09:04 PM yeah, right :|
those are RARE temperatures in São Paulo. 4º in the morning? HAHAHA. São Paulo usually dont get below 10º in the winter... and that in cold days.
In a commom day of winter, on a typical day of drizzle during the winter, this is the normal temperature, and this year the lowest temperature was 2 ° C.
in the coldest days, temperatures around 10°C is the maximum temperature, not the minimum temperature.

Sorry, but I don't remember a day São Paulo registered maximum of 10ºC. This is very difficult to happen even in Curitiba, the coldest capital in Brazil. If you remember, prove it with the register of INMET or another website...
sipriano August 31st, 2009, 11:22 PM We don't have a maximum temperature of 10°C this year, but have days with 11°C of maximum temperature in the south of the city, and in the downtown 13°C, i think the last time this happened in the downtown was in 2007, was 9,X°C.(I do not know the exact temperature)
But days with 12°C of maximum temperature, is relatively common in the winter.
Taller, Better September 1st, 2009, 02:06 AM Hey guys, thanks for keeping my old Brazil thread alive! I get to run through it and relive my fantastic journey there, and plan my next visit! :D

No, they aren't. They aren't common even in Curitiba... it happens once or twice a year (if it happens). The average maximum temperature in the coldest month is 22ºC, and these days it's getting close to 30ºC even in winter. Well, I'll not discuss it anymore.
Taller, Better , are you planning to come back to Brazil? When? Where? :D
Taller, Better September 1st, 2009, 03:50 AM Hopefully within a year. Next visit I want to go to Rio, and to Salvador!

Yes, it is relatively common, we have 10~15 days per year, with maximum temperatures around 12°C, in a common winter.

Ilhabela is perfect, why didnt you go to Santos or Praia Grande?
so, when you back here, I guess you'd like Santa Catarina' state, Camboriu and Florianopolis.
If you go to Curitiba you'll be at home, it is very similar to canadian towns! hahah! :)
Thanks for sharing those pix from your trip!!

Taller, Better July 9th, 2010, 08:19 PM Thanks guys! I am thirsting to go back to Brazil. I miss it very much! :( However, Brazilian Day Canada here in Toronto on September 6th at our Yonge-Dundas Square is going to be VERY much fun- my favourite singer of all is coming!!!! Ivete Sangalo!! I've been praying for her to come for years!!! Check out this little clip on the Brazilian day website:

The concert is free but obviously I will buy a VIP ticket!! :D

The largest and by far most organized community of Brazilians in Canada is in Toronto. Here are some photos I have put in my "Hot Off the Press" thread from various Brazilian parties here in this city. First, last year's Brazil Day festivities on September 7th. The show performs in New York one day, and moves to Toronto the next day:

and the festivals could go on and on, but that is enough to give you an idea!
One of the largest, most prestigious and DEFINITELY most glamorous charity fundraisers in Canada is the annual Brazilian Ball here in Toronto. It has raised many, many millions of dollars for charities since its inception in 1966 as the brainchild of Anna Maria de Souza (whom I had the honour of meeting a few times before she sadly passed away). La crème de la crème of Toronto society attends, for it is sometimes considered the highlight of the annual society calendar. For photos of the event, see here:

That is true, compared to the USA where there are far, far more Latinos living, but there is still a very noticeable South American, Mexican and Central American community here in Toronto. If anyone is interested, last summer I did a tour of some of the areas here like College Street and Kensington market, focusing on Latino businesses, and the results were very interesting!

Well the brazilian community in Toronto is bigger than I could imagine, although its still small:)
Taller, Better July 29th, 2010, 07:05 AM We have churascarias, and other types of Brazilian restaurants, grocery stores to buy Brazilian foods, bars, Globo TV, etc... so you must come visit us some day and we will make you feel at home! I am super thrilled about Ivete Sangalo coming this September 6th. She is also from the Bahia, as I am sure you know! I might just die from excitement when she steps onto the stage:

I'll repost here some photos I took from the Portuguese/Brazilian area here last summer. These areas tend to have a mixture of
people inhabiting them:
"by far the bulk of the streets are Little Italy and Little Portugal, and I took a lot
of photos there to post later in my photoblog. I'll just squeeze in a few out near Ossington, where the Brazilian area sort of intersects the much larger Portuguese area.

 just their way of saying there will be a mix of Brazilian and Spanish language Latino music on that particular night. Many South Americans tend to mix when they are away from their home country (in the same way ex-pat Scottish/Irish and English tend to mingle at pubs here, too). I'm not keen on Guarana- don't like that flavour and waay too much caffeine for me! I'll stick to Brahma! :cheers2:
capricorn2000 August 1st, 2010, 05:53 PM wow, Brazilians are a sizeable lot and they're out to have a fun celebration.
and too, they are beautiful people.
Taller, Better August 1st, 2010, 06:15 PM Agreed! They love to party, have the best music and dancing, and are certainly good looking!! :naughty:
caduroxbr August 4th, 2010, 12:02 AM Rio is perfect for you.
The Cristo Redentor and Sugar Leaf views are FANTASTIC you memorize this forever, its a single sensation...
The city is amazing, have good beaches (Barra and Ipanema are best), a LOOOOT of nice museums and a best tourist estructure.
And if u want a relax trip, u can go to Buzios or Arraial do Cabo (Rio State, its near the capital), the best beaches in south america, and i think world xDDD.
PS: if u come to Rio, u cant visit Maracana, because the stadium is closed for 2014 games.
Only olympic stadium (the most modern in LA) is open.
Best places in Rio: Copacabana,Ipanema,Leblon,Lagoa(VERY AMAZING),Barra and Centre (The mom of brazilian history, its FANTASTIC the churches, museums, theatres, librarys and the city economical center).
And the metro is translated for english.

Taller, Better September 7th, 2010, 06:58 PM The huge throng of people celebrating Brazil Day in Canada eagerly await the main act, Ivete Sangalo! We were lucky that here she performed a free outdoor concert, whereas in New York she had a concert inside the Madison Square Gardens. There are many warmup acts before Ivete arrives:

JPBrazil September 8th, 2010, 06:31 PM Wow, looks like people were having a great time there! You're a really good photographer, can't imagine how hard it might have been to take those shots.
Unfortunatelly I'm not really into Axé music, I prefer samba, rock, MPB...
christos-greece September 8th, 2010, 06:36 PM Really amazing and very nice photos TB :) she really rocks...
kingsway September 9th, 2010, 02:33 AM nice shots.
I can imagine how festive that celebration is.
Arthur* September 10th, 2010, 02:58 AM Great photos from this aewsome party Taller Better!I liked the photos that u took of Ivete!
Lots of beautiful ppl, great attraction,Ivete Sangalo, brazilian culture, enthusiasm and too many brazilians and i guess canadians too :D.
Brazilian food and its impressive how Brahma is every where, is it popular in Canada?
The Brazilian Day Canada was promoted by the biggest brazilian tv company Rede Globo, btw one of the biggest world wide!
Arthur* September 10th, 2010, 03:00 AM Its impressive how they always attach brazilian image to sexuality and sex appeal ¬¬
Taller, Better September 10th, 2010, 08:07 AM Thanks, guys! Much appreciated. You can get Globo here, too (we do) as a speciality channel. Later Globo will show both the New York and Toronto Brazil Day festivities. They make it into a special! Fun to watch last years.
Brahma is fairly popular; at least in Toronto. I like it very much!
FISCHERZIN September 16th, 2010, 12:59 PM wow! so much people, its impressive.. they are all brazilians or have people from canada there also? what seginho grosman was doing there? he goes to every parties in the world ^^
Taller, Better September 16th, 2010, 09:36 PM I'd say most of the crowd were people born in Brazil. The same entertainers, and Serginho were in New York the day before, and then flew to Toronto for the Monday party. He was the host last year, too. The party's biggest sponsor is Globo television.
Arthur* September 17th, 2010, 03:13 AM TB are the canadians in general "cold people" or are they warm ??
I want to know the opnion from a person that have already came to Brazil :)
Taller, Better September 17th, 2010, 09:10 AM Well, that is a difficult question. To be honest, I find Canadians very friendly and I found people in Brazil to be very friendly, too. I've been in Brazil, and people do not behave it is a party like this on a day to day basis there. They get up in the morning, brush their teeth, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, eat dinner, pay bills, etc.... just like everywhere else. They don't treat strangers on the street any differently than we would here. People like to generalize and stereotype and put everyone into a nice, neat little box, so they tend to say people from country A are cold and people from country B are warm, etc..(it even happens here within our own country when one area wants to feel better about themselves than another area). To me, I get warm reactions from people whom I give warm feelings to. If I am friendly, I get friendliness back. So, I try not to make stereotypes about entire nations as I find I have an easy time meeting people everywhere I go!
One barrier can be language, however.... if you visit a country and cannot speak the language or do not have an interpretor with you, it can seem very cold and unfriendly, as you cannot
communicate fully with the people.
aster4000 September 18th, 2010, 01:03 AM wow, this is one big Brazilian party.
The celebrity Yvete has facial resemblance with Sandra Bullock.
Don't you think so?
Arthur* September 18th, 2010, 03:56 AM Well, that is a difficult question. To be honest, I find Canadians very friendly and I found people in Brazil to be very friendly, too. Taller, Better October 29th, 2011, 05:24 PM Thanks, everyone! I forgot to post the photos from our Brazil Day last month in this thread, so here they are! Was a bit of a chilly dip from previously warm temperatures, but people kept dancing to warm up the Square! For years there has been a big party in New York to celebrate Brazil Day, and three years ago Globo television to include Canada, by bringing it here the day after New York. The feature performing band was Exaltasamba, from Rio.

christos-greece November 13th, 2011, 11:37 AM Indeed great, very nice updates Taller, Better :)
mopc December 17th, 2011, 07:49 AM Fantastic picture collection, nice to see it grow after visiting this thread a few years ago.
Just one question: how is the picture below in any way related to Brazilians:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j251/dawnd_01/WINTER%202008/Winter%20Part%20Two%202009/Late%20Summer%20Early%20Fall%202009/IMGP7185i.jpg
Taller, Better December 17th, 2011, 08:31 AM ^^ Glad you liked them! As for your question, I do realize it appears to be teaching Spanish Latin dancing, but who knows, maybe they teach Brazilian salsa styles as well. ;) As I said before I posted those photos:
I'll repost here some photos I took from the Portuguese/Brazilian area here last summer. These areas tend to have a mixture of
people inhabiting them:
It is the Brazilian/Portuguese area, but all sorts of other people live there, too. In Greektown there is a Mexican restaurant, and there are sushi places in Little Italy.
That is the nature of Toronto!
mopc December 18th, 2011, 08:26 AM I never heard of "Brazilian salsa" but thanks for the explanation! keep up the great thread!
Taller, Better December 18th, 2011, 09:01 AM hehe... I was just making a little joke. I know it is not a traditional Brazilian dance. But, it has been imported and there are many people in Brazil who dance it; with a slightly different style. I know some personally, actually. In the same way, the Lambada swept Spanish speaking Latin America, even though clearly it is a Brazilian dance originating in Pará.
I actually took that picture on a day of much broader intent when I took photos of establishments from all Latin American cultures (Mexican, etc...). I should have deleted that photo from the bunch, as this was the second time people are confused by it.
mopc December 21st, 2011, 01:25 AM ^^ yes the fact that the banner is in Spanish clearly indicates it's not about Brazil
Taller, Better December 21st, 2011, 08:52 PM Actually, most of the banner is in English, but I understand that it is aimed at the Spanish speaking Latin community by the types of dance lessons they offer, but as I said no area in Toronto is exclusively Brazilian. Neighbourhoods here tend to be a mix of people, and people from all over South American have tended to settle on or around College Street.
