StormShadow May 11th, 2007, 08:00 PM This small city looks very good, well maintained too, like Windhoek. Walvis Bay isn't very far away in the south also. Namibian cities are very well maintained.
NickABQ August 24th, 2007, 06:32 AM I love Swakkies! It reminds me of several neighborhoods in San Francisco! :D :D

Hammelkar September 28th, 2007, 10:52 PM Why ppl all ways thing that african cities are dirty??!!
Any way i just want to say that Namibia its really the Disney World of Africa. Everything seems so perfect. Perhaps the only thing they need there is population to give more rhythm to the gorgeus cities.

shugs December 20th, 2007, 03:27 AM what an amazing looking place... it has a serious small town look to it...
I would love to float through Swakopmund town centre while on an African adventure lol :)
StormShadow December 20th, 2007, 03:41 AM ^^ It's the second largest city in Namibia but Namibian urban centers aren't very large.
shugs December 20th, 2007, 03:56 AM wow... that's even smaller than my town which is on the coast in the English countryside with a population of ~45,000... and it's a city, Namibia seems intriguing...

StormShadow July 5th, 2008, 10:23 PM Oh no! I don't know who renamed the gallery to Angola (when I named it originally "Swakopmund, Namibia") sometime ago and then moved it to this sector recently. This city is actually located in Namibia! Can any of the mods please move this gallery back to the SSC Africa - Photo Galleries section and remove Angola from the title and rename it Namibia in it's place ?
Thanks, I would really appreciate that!

Storm please send a Private Message to a moderator. They don't see all the threads.

Gag Halfrunt February 22nd, 2009, 12:33 AM The thread title still says Angola instead of Namibia. Could a moderator please correct it?
Gulivar February 22nd, 2009, 03:16 AM They know about that. They're still in the process of sorting it out. ;)
Ras Siyan February 28th, 2009, 08:04 PM This country is simple breathtaking. They knew how to use their german architectural heritage, the cities are well mantained, Windhoek several times was designed as Africa's cleanest capital city.
I'm in love with that country, shame on us (the other older African nations), keeping in mind that this country gained independance in 1990 (only Eritrea is younger in the continent I guess).
Well done Namibia!
P.S: Does anyone has a clear idea about the social-economic performance of this lovely place? According to information on the net, they're doing pretty good there.

Gag Halfrunt August 19th, 2009, 11:47 PM ^^ Swakopmund is in Namibia, which was a German colony, hence the Bavarian architecture. Someone changed the thread title to Angola and we've only been waiting a year or so for it to be corrected. :)
StormShadow September 17th, 2009, 06:19 AM ^ Yes, can a moderator finally please correct the mistake. We've been waiting for such a long time.
In and all, the German colonial architecture seems rather interesting, I don't know why so many people tend to have issues with it here. Namibian settlements are quite small in size, this is the reason likely why so much of the colonial remnants are so obvious.
However, the German Empire came to the imperialistic-colonial scene rather late and it didn't expand centuries like other colonial empires. Prior to the mid-late 1800's a few German states had trading post, but never larger colonies until the stated dates. The German Empire had control of what is today Namibia, Tanzania, Cameroon, Togo, Samoa, a portion of eastern New Guinea along with islands off the coast, some smaller islands in the Pacific, and 2 trading cities in China's waterfront.
In terms of structures being built, it's evident, they invested the most into Namibia, it's visually obvious from a number of settlements in that country. Although that's the positive side, there was also a negative side in Namibia with the German Empire also.

Oh yeah. One day I was at my company taking a glance at an old German atlas we have there (from 1899) and I saw all those German territories spread around the world. They even had some islands named Kaiser-wilhelm insel off New Guinea's coast. And also my region was portrayed in some special area. Maybe they had some hope we became sort of a little Namibia in South America. :D
And what could be the negative impact of the German occupation in Namibia? Nowadays they got some excellent road network and hm, the cities look okay. But well, in terms of development they're still behind some African nations, right?

I'd love to do such a trip. Cape Town (RSA) - Windhoek - Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. I think 4 days in Swakopmund is too much, unless you've got something to do over there.
StormShadow October 10th, 2009, 01:40 AM Very well kept settlements and management in Namibia, although small. I am still curious to why Angola is still placed on the title after all this time. :ohno:
schmidt, speaking of earlier eras long before the German Empire of the 1800's-1900's. The Welser family Banking/Merchant company during the Renaissance era was granted by Spain an opportunity to colonize south America around the areas of modern day Venezuela, however it failed in the long term, lack of supplies, thick forests, diseases and hostile local Amerindians put an end to it. If I recall correctly the German colonist who came were from Bavaria and Brandenburg.
arac October 10th, 2009, 04:56 AM Really amazing city!!! Very well kept, and really nice buildings! It seems to be a great seaside resort.
And what could be the negative impact of the German occupation in Namibia?
Well they were quite brutal with the natives, there they used concentration camps (which I think were only used once before by the british against boer women and children), and many of the nice colonial houses we see, were built with enslaved workers. (If it hadn't been for that BIG BIG, really big detail I'd say the germans and later the southafricans did a good job, according with the places we can see in pics like the ones posted here, which I guess many namibians can't afford to visit)
Here's a really good BBC documentary on the subject.

StormShadow October 11th, 2009, 12:51 AM Yes, I am aware of what had happened there, and I had seen that documentary along with another. I although avoided posting that. That is the negativity I had on mind. But now, you are aware.
Bertii October 12th, 2009, 12:41 PM This documentary does not mention the harm done by 75 years of South African occupation and control. The Namibian government inherited one of the most unequal societies in the world but has taken big steps to try and correct the mistakes of the past. In 1990 illiteracy nationally was nearly 65%. Today it is less than 10% simply because the bulk of the annual budget is spent on education. (Egypt spent more on subsidising food than on education) Unemployment was over 70% in the early nineties. Today it hovers at 27-31%. A black economic empowerment and land redistribution programme was launched in the late nineties entirely funded by the German government. However slow thousands of families has been resettled. The namibian government had no choice but to pursue free market policies vital for economic growth in a modern age. (We have already seen attempts to go it alone can backfire e.g. Zimbabwe) Today the namibian stock exchange is the second largest on the continent, second only to the Johannesburg XS. Even petrol are subsidised by the government because of high vehicle dependancy.
Vision 2030 is a programme launched by the government and funded by the USA to the tune of billions of US$ to eradicate povery completely and have the country fully industrialised by 2030. We were born into the gated communities that we live in today but despite that I have seen many changes over the past 19 years mostly positive and i realise so much more need to be done but i truly believe we are on the right path. The German architecture reminds us of the sacrifices made by our forefathers and that it was'nt always as peaceful so we should not take it for granted. Despite its bloody history and all its shortcomings i love my country.

Bertii October 12th, 2009, 01:29 PM I would suggest just use the cities as a transit to see the country. You would be better off spending 3days in Etosha national park and 1 day each in Swakopmund and Walvisbay. Depending on what you like I can suggest places to go in Windhoek and what to do at that time of the year.

I want to ask, if it isn't any trouble, how many Namibian members do we have on this forum ? We must have a few.
Ras Siyan October 14th, 2009, 07:12 AM Congrats StormShadow! Nice update!
Namibia is one of my favorite African country's. I like the unique look, a german influenced architecture in a unique landscape. Namibia is worth visiting. Anyone who has been there?
StormShadow October 14th, 2009, 07:51 AM I agree, well managed too and a good sanitation system. Namibian cities stick out like you said, not only is it orderly bit the German-Colonial architecture sticks out in that landscape, add that with modern development, some nice housing stock in Namibia.
It will be nice if we had a couple of members from Namibia, this way, in the future we could request a section for them. It does seem a lot of people seem highly interested with the cities and landscapes in the country and all seem to had good things to say.
Bertii October 14th, 2009, 05:15 PM Hi Stormshadow, I am a Namibian living in London. It is only now that I realise how difficult it is to get photos of smaller towns in Namibia on the net.
Thank you moderators!

schmidt October 14th, 2009, 05:49 PM ^^ bertii, how is the German heritage in Namibia nowadays? Is the language still alive in the country or has it been replaced by English? And Afrikaans?
And I was reading on the interent that there is a HUGE risk of being bitten by black mambas in the Caprivi area (consequently in the Vic. Falls area too), is that correct?
Bertii October 14th, 2009, 06:09 PM The German language in Namibia is there to stay i think because after South Africa, majority of tourist are from Germany. A lot of small and medium business is German. I had German in school and so did my brother. German newspapers and radio stations are still going strong. English is the national language but because education before independence was in Afrikaans this is widely spoken at home. You are right there is a huge risk with the snakes in Caprivi especially after the rainy season

Bertii October 14th, 2009, 06:13 PM German is our third national language. We have 11 national languages.

Hi Bertii, and welcome! Yes, it is quite difficult, but I however learned that it is easier at least for me to find recent quality images of Namibia than it is for finding images which are recent from nearby Botswana and Zimbabwe. I'll link you to all the Namibian galleries in a few minutes, if you don't mind. :)
The reason I had asked how many members do we have who are Namibian, is because for the reasons I had mentioned a few post above. We can likely get a Namibian sector if we have a few members available who are Namibian, we already have some galleries, which some are quite large. All we need is data such as current events and developments to get this all going.

You can upload your images to free hosts such as "ImageHost" or "ImageShack."
To post an image is rather simple, once you acquired the photo link you wish to post, simply click on the "Insert Image" tab that you see above in the Message Box, it's the graphic with that is square shaped, yellow in color, and what appears to be 2 mountains in 2 different coloring shades.

Simfan34 October 23rd, 2009, 04:09 AM Namibia's cities are really no architecturally better than most African cities. Although there are a few out-standing buildings in the cities, there isn't much. The thing that sets them apart, though, is the standard of cleanliness, the clean coat of paint on all the buildings, the well maintained sidewalks, the high quality of new construction, the manicured grass and trees, and so on. If the rest of Africa could follow Namibia's example, Swakopmund, with all due respect, would simply look average. But it doesn't, so most cities look like utter trash, and Namibia looks fantastic.
Cheers to them.

I Kenya there are good houses but far too many people for the houses to support..........you see good structures everywhere under complete and construction bt people still live in slums.
