GaryinSydney March 30th, 2006, 05:58 AM So totally subjective, but here's my list of favourite Euro cities i've visited :-)
1. Lisbon
2. Madrid
3. London
4. Barcelona
5. Berlin
6. Paris
7. Budapest
8. Amsterdam
9. Munich
10. Antwerp
Justme March 30th, 2006, 08:27 AM Like GaryinSydney said, it's purely subjective.
My list would be:
1:London
2:Paris
3:Barcelona
4:Madrid
5:berlin
6:Amsterdam
7:Lisbon
8:Venice
9:Nice/Monaco
10:Brussels
It's so hard though, as I could have also added many of these cities somewhere in the top 10:
Vienna, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Manchester, Birmingham, Dublin, Valencia, Porto, Prague, Budapest, Milan, Rome, Lyon, Zurich etc
Likewise, on the top ten list, I could move many cities around. Places like Amsterdam could be much higher, as with Lisbon and others. Many of them I consider in the same league, such as London and Paris, and to be honest, I love Barcelona just as much.
It's a very hard list to make. Let's just say there are so many wonderful cities in Europe.

Küsel March 30th, 2006, 10:14 AM Of the ones I know personally:
1 - London (has everything you want in any terms - best city in the world)
2 - Rome (pure history of 2500 years, museums, architecture, athmosphere - just bloody traffic is horrible)
3 - Helsinki (most underrated city in the continent by ANY terms)
4 - Paris (apart from the inhabitants  )
5 - Barcelona (architectural gem, beautiful setting, highly underrated old town)
6 - Zurich (beautiful setting, great life and international liberal athmosphere in summer, dead in winter - avoid it ;))
7 - Lisboa (just visit it and feel the city :))
8 - Moscow (apart from the corruptive tourist-hunting police great city with beautiful museums and the greatest development in Europe - Sao Paulo of the north ;))
9 - Salzburg (beauty, culture, culinary, do I have to say more?)
10 - Hamburg (totally wrongly in the shadow of Berlin, München and Köln!)
Out of competition because it's the most romantic place on earth: VENICE ;)

My list (in no order):

- Belgrad (wanna know how the serbians (at least the Belgradians) really are)
- Barcelona (Gaudi etc.)
- Paris (well, if the majority says this is the most beautyful city, I must see it)
- Sarajevo (want to know how well the city recovered from the war)
- Athens (wanna test the stereotype of greek buildings always being white)
- Zürich (The lake, the hill, the nightlife)
- Warsaw (the highrises)

Anyway, if Turkey is Europe based on 3% of it's land, then Denmark must surely be North American based on Greenland, eh?
But no reason to discuss this here...
The reason I addressed you to was because the Tread title was named "Top Ten Cities in Europe" and based on your posts #13 #15 and #16 on page 1 it seemed to me you didn't undertand the title - so I was just trying to help
DonQui March 31st, 2006, 06:20 AM for me:

I will only comment on these cities as these are the only major ones that I have visited in Europe. I would probably throw in:
6) Berlin
7) Milan
8) Amsterdam
9) Copenhagen
10) Stockholm
But I have not visited these cities, so I cannot actually say if this would be true. :nono:

Honestly, just let those who include Istanbul, include Instanbul. Turkey may only have 3% of it's landmass in Europe. But Istanbul has a much larger percentage, including the downtown of the city, the main historical core, and most of the attractions.
The bottom line is, if you sit in downtown Istanbul, you are sitting in Europe.
Now please, end the debate and let people vote for their top 10 cities, even if it includes Istanbul.
DvW March 31st, 2006, 09:12 AM It's a fact that Istanbul is located on two continents, where is the debate now? :D
Küsel March 31st, 2006, 09:17 AM Justme is absolutly right: the historical center of Istanbul is geologically in Europe. Culturally it has anyway a European tradition (Eastern Roman Empire, Byzanz, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire - which took the whole Balkan etc.). So for sure Istanbul has to be included in a potential list...
Giorgio March 31st, 2006, 09:58 AM I found it very sad that many people didnt Name Athens in thier top 10.
The first European City....The craddle of democracy and western civilisation.
Athens has done so much for the entire world....

Kuvvaci March 31st, 2006, 10:05 AM ^^ beyond this, the real Europe is this area. Denmark was not a part of Europe at the ancient time. The place you called Europe now was not Europe in fact, it was called "Chrisandome". Later people started to call Chrisandome as europe and this is why bordered with Bosphorus. So, it is better the change the name of the contient as Chrisandome, and get relax. But if you mean real Europe, that is anything else... If you mean politically euorpe, just look at the European Counsil memebers.
But this subjects go on always because of some redneck racist complexes wich is always shown everywhere. I hope none of the member of this forum has not such racist redneck complexes here. Am I wrong?

Apart from good weather and cheap prices, yes - I'd agree :D
HD March 31st, 2006, 05:12 PM actually, london is pretty disappointing if you're gay...
and it doesn't have skyscraper canyons (speaking of london having all you
want). but apart from that it is a great place and it's not surprising many people include london in their list.

LOL! saying london is one of the gay capitals is just a marketing gimmick. it's far from the truth. the scene is not very big for a city like london. and there is no diversity. are you gay? have you ever been to the scene? I assume not. because otherwise you wouldn't ask such questions...and you wouldn't say london is one of the gay capitals of the world. and I'm not comparing london to san francisco or amsterdam. because there is no comparison. but london's gay night life isn't even on par with barcelona, cologne or berlin. sorry, the handful of good gay clubs isn't worth calling london one of the gay capitals. having a lot of gay people living in one city doesn't automatically mean it's a great place for gays. there isn't even a gay cinema there...( you can't call that tiny bar at kings cross with a few tvs with porn a gay cinema). and try to find a darkroom...well good luck.
FREKI March 31st, 2006, 07:36 PM Please tell me ''what is your education level? '' School and college, why? What's your's? (as if I really care ;) )

HD March 31st, 2006, 07:39 PM what are you talking about?? Ive been living in london for 4 years. all together there are maybe 20 to 30 gay bars. and thats it. on a weekend there are maybe 3 gay clubs worth visiting.

Yeah, but in the real world catering for every gay need isn't exactly a no. 1 priority is it.
HD March 31st, 2006, 07:41 PM I was only replying to wjfox, who claims london is one of world's gay capitals, which it's not. most people couldn't care less about that -atleast the heterosexual fraction.
FREKI March 31st, 2006, 07:46 PM this subjects go on always because of some redneck racist complexes wich is always shown everywhere. I hope none of the member of this forum has not such racist redneck complexes here. Am I wrong?I'm neither racist nor redneck - I just disagree that Europe borders Iraq, Syria, Iran, Armenia and Georgia.
Anyway, no reason to discuss this here, as I doubt it will accomplish anything - so let's just agree to disagree
DiggerD21 March 31st, 2006, 07:53 PM Mr_Denmark, if Istanbul wouldn't be turkish but greek or bulgarian, would you count it as a european city then? Have you ever been to Istanbul?

Not all share the same view as what Europe is and isn't, get over it!
You've taken some education, but still you dont know where europe is!
And so
Why is there any Turkish team in the Champions league ?
Why Turkey joins EUROvision contest ?
Why will(or wont) Turkey join EU ?
Why was 2005 Champions League Cup final in Istanbul?
Result: Turkey is in europe and Istanbul, too. So I think you must go to a college again and again :okay:

Yeah, I was asking exactly these questions myself... ;)
Timur March 31st, 2006, 08:44 PM Erm... please explain the logic to this.
London is one of the gay capitals of the world!
puhahaha  i ve never been there but seriously i heard this kind of things about england so many times. im getting curious really is there real gay population in london?
FREKI March 31st, 2006, 08:49 PM Mr_Denmark, if Istanbul wouldn't be turkish but greek or bulgarian, would you count it as a european city then? Have you ever been to Istanbul? I would count the part on the continental Europe side European... but it would depend on how much of the country would be located in Asia, before I can decide for the Asian side.
I'm not saying it's not partially placed on the European continent, I'm just saying that I personly does not think it makes Tukey a European country - just as I don't think Denmark is part of North America, eventhough 90%+ of our Kingdom is located in North America. And eventhough the Canary islands is Spanish it doesn't make them Europe... IMO
You've taken some education, but still you dont know where europe is! I'm of another opinion as you, easy as that
Why is there any Turkish team in the Champions league ? I don't know, nor care - my best guess would be money related..
Why Turkey joins EUROvision contest ? Why does Israel? is that Europe too?
Why will(or wont) Turkey join EU ? The Europeans don't want it to join, Turkey don't want to join ( atleast it didn't think so doing some of the anti Denmark/anti EU protests some weeks ago )
Why was 2005 Champions League Cup final in Istanbul? Again I don't know, nor care as I'm not really a Soccer fan
Result: Turkey is in europe and Istanbul, too. So I think you must go to a college again and again :okay: Again I disagree - Tukey turned to the west after WW2 and therefore resieved some privileges and has been a great NATO allied for years, but that doesn't mean it's part of Europe - it just means it's a good friend... just as with Isreal - they are part of the Eurovision song contest too, and just as Turkey located outside of Europe...
For me Europe is not about continents as we are all connected to Asia and I'm sure most will agree that that doesn't make China Europe or Germany asian..
For me it's about culture and view on the world, and Turkey does not fit in my view of what Europe is, nomatter where it's partially located... but I do respect people's view should they differ from my own.. I just don't agree..
Anyway, let's not ruin this thread with this debate, feel free to PM me if you want to debate it, just don't expect I change my view about it.

6) Gibraltar - unique and like the UK, only warm!
7) Amsterdam - atmospheric in the winter
8) Berlin - Fascinating in 1990
9) Belfast - big city atmosphere, and a really nice city.

There are cities outside of Western Europe too. If Moscow is not a "top city", I don't know what is. There are plenty more too.

It is true. I love L'viv because you feel the history in these city. The buildings aren't renovated, and they are very natural. In all streets you find paving stones. When I am in L'viv, I feel like I am in ages 20.
I think that all Ukraine is very fascinating country, because it just wake up. I don't feel the same in Lithuania, Slovakia, Estonia or Latvia.
And the space with no building till horizon is amazing!! (not in L'viv :))

No offence, but can you be anymore typical American? This list is so stereotypical it hurts my eyes...
Is this because you haven't visited any other cities, or are these really your top pickings? (I'm not attacking you. Being European, I just might have a different view on what is a 'great city'. Amsterdam, for example, I find tacky and overcrowded.)
My list (in no order):

jcarloschile July 16th, 2009, 06:55 PM What? So in order to "don't look american" you have to choose the most uncommon of cities?? I find that to be hilarious. For example my favourite is Paris, because it truly is for me the top city of Europe, and I don't care if 100000000000 other people think the same, it's my opinon what is important for me.

that's not what I said. I just get the feeling people come up with the same lists over and over again because they don't know any other cities. And about being American: I just meant that an American's criteria may very well be different. They lack cities like Venice, whereas they won't find Rotterdam impressive, because they have 50 cities just like it...
All I was trying to say was that I find it a shame that many cities are overlooked, while others get all the attention. And for many reasons I prefer Bologna over Venice, Rotterdam over Amsterdam, Berlin over Dresden, Antwerp over Bruges, etc...
You don't have to agree, I never said that...

^^:weird:The majority of people living in the Americas usually has the same top ten list...and the reason is simple: those cities are the most famous and representative cities in Europe.........of course our opinion sometimes could be a lil bit typical (foreign typical) since we live in the Americas............some of us been travelled over there and in our first trip we usually choose those cities........I mean I would chose 10,000 times to visit Paris in my first chance than Lyon......sometimes is just at later trips when you discover some unique places you missed in the past....and sometimes you realize after travelling a LOT that big cities like Paris, Rome; Istanbul and Barcelona have it all..........
So go wash your eyes and be a lil bit more open minded for other opinions... :okay:

Every culture looks different at a city. Belgium people are for example the least positive tourists (7/10) in Amsterdam. For me you are a typical "Belg" (no offense, I like Belgium people).
Each city is unique, and can be nice. Small cities can really be beautiful, and can be far nicer than the big ones. Visiting a big city can also be very deceptive. There is so much to see. Even in my own hometown (Amsterdam, where I live all my life), I can really be suprised with what I see. It is all about what you want to see, do and on what level. There is far more to see in Amsterdam if it comes to art than Antwerp, but it is easier and therefore better (I say this, because there is a huge amount of shops in Amsterdam where hardly any normal tourist comes) to shop as tourist in Antwerp than in Amsterdam for example.
Each list is personal, each city is unique, every visit can be experienced different.

Not really;). I really like Antwerpen (for a weekend). Vlaanderen is our holiday country. It's cities are amazing.
But to put down someone's choices is not needed. People come to the big cities for the cultural treasures. Living in these cities is another story. I would never like to live in London or Paris but love to get lost in these places and find new things.

While i understand taking such a route, you can clearly see that he (and most tourists) only visited the standard cities. This is no judgement, it's just something I find sad. For example, in France, the biggest country in the EU, people often visit only one or two cities. Only two in Germany, the most populous country in the EU, etc... I'm convinced that people would come up with different lists if they were to visit more off-the-beaten-track towns...
But anyway, since this apparently sounds like I'm talking down to people, I won't go on about it any longer...

Well, that's quite normal no? The first time we Europeans go to the USA we mostly visit New York /LA/Las Vegas or San Francisco first. These are famous world-class cities and you have to do those once in your life. After you visited those you can visit some of the lesser known corners of the country. You can't first visit small little towns on the East Coast if you haven't seen New York or Washington. Same for Europe.
I'm sure the next time he will come to Europe, he will visit some lesser known cities.

Well, I enjoyed seeing your older photos. Sometimes it's great to remember what a place was like. Hopefully you do get a chance to come back as many of those cities look a lot nicer today than in 1992. Much renovation and new constructions have gone on.
Anyway, thanks for posting them :)

Küsel July 22nd, 2009, 05:50 PM I like middle-sized cities <1mio in metro
Lausanne
Zaragoza
Venice
Bologna
Nicosia (okay that's somehow Asia)
Ljibliana
Lugano
Bergen
Chester
Colmar
From the big ones:
London (by faaaaaaaar, rest not in order)
Rome
Milano
Zurich
Helsinki
Hamburg
Paris
Barcelona
Edinburgh
Athens
Totally overrated (where I was extremely disappointed): Amsterdam, Dublin, Naples (okay they really do have serious problems there, it's not their fault), Frankfurt, Köln and Athens once as well but this one changed to a hot spot in the last 10 years.

Zaragoza
From the big ones:
Zurich
Helsinki
Zaragoza is way bigger than Helsinki and Zurich both population and area wise. and I personally wouldn't classify neither of them as a "big" city anyways.
Justme July 23rd, 2009, 08:03 PM Zaragoza is way bigger than Helsinki and Zurich both population and area wise. and I personally wouldn't classify neither of them as a "big" city anyways.
er...
Zaragoza 682,000 (city proper), 783,000 (Metro Area)
Zurich 361,000 (city proper), 1.6million (Metro Area)
Helsinki 578,000 (city proper), 1million (Metro Area)
I don't quite see your point. Even if you were just considering the direct city proper which is based on political boundaries it's not that much different to Helsinki, but based on Metropolitan area it is actually smaller.
I would personally group them all together regarding their size as a small-medium city.
Küsel July 24th, 2009, 10:35 AM Zurich has now close to 1.8mio and Helsinki nearly 1.1.
You know that Zaragoza has an area of over 1000km2 for the 680k pop? Zurich municipality has some 80!!km2 (excluding lakes), including the closer suburbs there are 1.1.mio living on about 900km2. Frankfurt for example is 250km2 in size, that's three times Zurich for the same pop as Zaragoza (which is about 1.7 times Zurich). The problem is that people always under- or overestimate city pops because of the different municipality areas. For example in Geneva the city pop is only tight to 190k, but they live on an area of 15km2, which makes it one of the densest populated cities with nearly 12000/km2.

The point I was making is that Zaragoza itself is bigger than both Zurich and Helsinki population and area wise I think I made it very clear, and the numbers you've shown indicate the same.
Of course it depends if you take the city itself or the metro area, but I personally don't like combining all the municipalities, sometimes its allright, others it does not make a lot of sense, especially if there are two municipalities of equal sizes.
I agree with you that all three fall into the category medium cities.
And by the way, imo Zaragoza is quite ugly, surely falls behind both Zurich and Helsinki.
