Im seeing The Who and the Aussie Pink Floyd Show, should be brilliant Paul D March 31st, 2006, 03:34 PM I'm going to see the who. :) Paul D March 31st, 2006, 03:40 PM POP duo The Pet Shop Boys are to make their Summer Pops debut. The band, the most successful duo in pop history, will play at the big top on July 2. Regulars Australian Pink Floyd will make 2006 their fifth consecutive year at the Pops. The band is described as the biggest tribute act in the world, and will play two shows at either end of the month-long music extravaganza. Tickets for both acts go on sale from today Since scoring their first number one hit with West End Girls 20 years ago, Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have had 36 top 20 hits and ten top 10 albums. Their hits include number ones Heart, It's A Sin, and Always On My Mind, and 2006 sees a new album, Fundamental, produced by Trevor Horn and described by Q Magazine as "a return to the magnificently OTT disco pop of their heyday." Live, Pet Shop Boys have a reputation for spectacular shows and in recent years have headlined festivals including Glastonbury and Roskilde. This show marks their first visit to Merseyside since they headlined Creamfields in 1999. Neil Tennant said: "Playing a city like Liverpool which has such a famous legacy in terms of dance music and clubbing is a huge privilege." Australian Pink Floyd will perform their 'best of' over two nights with each show featuring a selection from the entire Floyd back-catalogue. Guitarist Damien Darlington said: "Playing Liverpool is so special to us, it's like a homecoming. "The atmosphere last year was truly amazing and we can't wait to get back." Council leader Warren Bradley, said: "Pet Shop Boys are legends and live shows by them are very rare." Promoter Chas Cole said: "Pet Shop Boys are famed for their breathtaking shows. "And I've never experienced an atmosphere at the Pops like The Australian Pink Floyd Shows last year. These should be another set of very special nights." Tickets for the Pet Shop Boys are £28.50/£32.50 and for Australian Pink Floyd £20/£22.50. The line-up so far . . . Check out my picture gallery of their recent Manchester MEN gig: Here (http://www.ijobsblog.com/?page_id=108) http://www.ijobsblog.com/images/aussiefloyd/DSC02873.jpg I wrote a review of the night: The whole review can be read Here (http://www.ijobsblog.com/?p=109) We arrived at the MEN at around 7.30pm and bought a beer, the Aussie Floyd would have approved, it would have been rude not to. We were shown to our seats and then took a little time out to have a walk around and meet several members of the unofficial Aussie Floyd forum before heading back to get ready for the whole of Animals (1977) live. It was pointed out to me that it would be Animals and not Wish You Were Here (1975), a careful look on stage at the image in the background gave it away! I originally heard APF play Animals for the first time at Liverpool Summer Pops 2005 and I am happy to report that they played it much better than last year! Just hearing my favourite Floyd album played live was a dream come true for me. From the acoustic opening of Pigs On The Wing it was played flawlessly, the sound was amazing accompanied by a superb light show and blow up pigs too! The star's name was linked with the Pops today as it emerged that last year's series of summer gigs cost Liverpool council £780,000 to subsidise. Officials said the Queen of Pop was top of the list of artists being pursued as they start preparing the line-up for 2008. Luring Madonna to play in Liverpool for the first time would be a massive coup for the Pops as it moves to its new home at the Kings Dock arena. Organisers said the venue's 10,000-seat capacity, compared with 4,000 in the Big Top, meant ahigher calibre of artist should be attracted to the city. Pops promoter Chas Cole said: "We intend to be exceptionally ambitious for the 2008 line-up and Madonna is right at the top of our wishlist." The near-£800,000 cost of last year's event was revealed in a report published after an investigation by councillors into how the Pops was operated. But Mr Cole and Jason Harborow, chief executive of the Culture Company, said they were satisfied the Pops provided value for money, despite the subsidy. They said the £650,000 bill of setting up a Big Top at Clarence Dock was the main factor behind the huge cost to taxpayers. Mr Cole said: "At Clarence Dock, things like providing power and plumbing for toilets is more expensive. "Because they are not many bars around there, we also feel we have to offer more facilities to the public. "The other reason is that moving to Clarence Dock has impacted on ticket sales. It is just not as visible as before." But Mr Cole said the venue had not affected the type of artists, which included the likes of The Who and Simply Red this year. Mr Harborow said the Pops provided value for money because of the £5m investment brought into Liverpool every year. He said: "This year, a quarter of visitors to the Pops were from parts of the north west other than Merseyside, and one in 10 from outside the north west." Paul D July 31st, 2006, 03:28 PM World stars in line for 08 Pops Jul 29 2006 THE Rolling Stones, U2 and Robbie Williams are being lured to Liverpool for Summer Pops 2008. The music heavyweights are in talks with organisers of the festival, which has been criticised for costing the city too much. Yesterday, it was revealed that last year's Summer Pops was subsidised by the council to the tune of £780,000, but injected £5m into the local economy. The A-list line-up is being negotiated by CMP Entertainments, which has organised the event for the past six years, but now has to tender to run it for Capital of Culture Year. The Summer Pops is to be put out to tender from 2007 onwards, after councillors demanded an inquiry into the soaring costs to the taxpayer. CMP managing director Chas Cole and Jason Harborow, chief executive of the Culture Company, last night said they were satisfied the Pops provided value for money, despite the subsidy. Mr Cole said: "The Pops has cost the council money, particularly because of the cost in holding it at Clarence Dock. "But the benefit to the city is staggering. The £5m does not just go to hotels, restaurants and taxi-drivers, it pays local people's wages and swirls around the economy. "When the event moves into the new Kings Dock Arena in 2008, it will be cheaper to run. "And now the city can attract more and more big names, which can only increase the financial returns." Mr Cole says he also intends to target performers like Stevie Wonder, Coldplay and Neil Young, with Madonna at the top of his wish list. CMP wants to continue running the Pops, and a good line-up should significantly boost its chances of winning the city tender. And if the 2008 event is to be successful, preparations need to be made as soon as possible. Mr Cole said: "The new arena's 10,000-seat capacity, compared with 4,000 in the Big Top, means a higher calibre of artist can be attracted to the city. "This is not just about 2008. After the city has the facility, it will be able to attract the big names year after year." Earlier this year, councillors were concerned about the cost of the event, and questions were also raised about Mr Cole's relationship with Phil Halsall, the council's director of resources. A report, which will be presented to the council at a scrutiny meeting on Monday, reveals the council has subsidised the Pops by £2.1m since 2001. In comparison, the report indicates the Pops have injected £25m into the Merseyside economy during the same period. A study into visitors to this year's Pops shows 80,000 people who attended came from outside Merseyside. One in 10 came from outside the North West and 1% from abroad. Visitors from outside the North West spent an average of £126 each during their stay. Mr Cole added: "There is this misconception that CMP Entertainments must make a lot of money on the back of the Pops, but this just isn't the case. "It is worthwhile, but at the same time a very difficult event to put on. "If it was easy to do, they would be putting them on everywhere, but the Pops is unique to Liverpool and it benefits the city enormously." Last night, Mr Harborow praised the Pops and said they were here to stay. The issues with the festival in the last two years had been down to the event's enforced change of venue. Mr Harborow added: "This report demonstrates the important economic benefits which the event brings to the city. "The pops were crucial to our success in being named Capital of Culture and we think the city's investment in the event has delivered fantastic value." Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council Cllr Marilyn Fielding said: "In the past six years, the Summer Pops has paved the way for even bigger and better concerts being staged at the Waterfront Arena. "The Pops have given the Arena a flying start and will help cement its future success as a world-class venue." Paul D February 16th, 2007, 05:08 PM Summer Pops music festival saved A Merseyside music festival is back on course after concert promoters came to a financial agreement with Liverpool City Council. This year's 16-day Summer Pops will now be held at Aintree racecourse as part of a new agreement which requires just £100,000 of taxpayers' money. The council had initially cancelled this year's event due to the cost of subsidies required by event promoters. Elton John, Diana Ross and Paul Simon have performed in previous years. The city council has agreed in principle to sponsor the music festival at the new 4,000 seat indoor Equestrian Centre at Aintree Racecourse. This sponsorship deal limits the council's liability because the promoter is taking all the financial risk The city council will invest £50,000 matched by another £50,000 from the Liverpool Culture Company. Council leader Warren Bradley said: "I am insisting the amount of money we put into it is fixed and there is no extra risk for city council taxpayers. "We are also talking with other organisations interested in putting on music festivals in Liverpool. "The city reaps huge benefits from music festivals and we know from the Grand National that events held at Aintree benefit the whole Liverpool economy. "This sponsorship deal limits the council's liability because the promoter is taking all the financial risk." Why aren't Sefton Council making a contribution given that Aintree Racecourse is in Sefton? Still, good news!! Paul D February 16th, 2007, 07:01 PM Good to see that this could now go ahead, a bit confusing though! Why aren't Sefton Council making a contribution given that Aintree Racecourse is in Sefton? Still, good news!! Only part of it is in Sefton. Pobbie February 17th, 2007, 01:41 AM Is it? I thought the entire racecourse was in Sefton, albeit very close to the Liverpool boundary. In any case, fantastic news. It may even be able to cater for larger crowds than usual. :) JUXTAPOL February 17th, 2007, 03:11 PM So Bradleys no nonsence approach has had a positive result again. The council taxpayers were being stung for £1/2M to host this event, so for all we know the event was making a profit + £1/2M. Now the company running the event will only make profits + £100k off the taxpayer. So Bradley has saved £400k, and the event will still go ahead. We all know how many events, organisations need subsidising/funding but it is weird how this Summer pops event is classed as making a loss of £1/2m, when something like the C.o.C events will require £100m+ from various sources. Will this be blasted in the negative press as C.o.C makes £100m+ loss. Once the Arena is open, the Summer pops will make a big proffit every year, because the event has grown. Realising the error of his ways, he apologised the following day, and as I explained that it wasn't me, he came over and signed my shirt after training. :) Nice man. Nice, grumpy man. Awayo February 17th, 2007, 11:32 PM Old Nev, I'd liked him, although I'm. not. a. blue. I was far too shy as a teenager to have heckled the Stipemonger. I'm a miserable, narky, grumbly old bastard now though, of course. Phil Neal once told one of my (Evertonian) schoolmates, that he had "a big mouth, son", after he'd chanted Ev-er-ton at him in Church Road News in Formby. This is the same newagents where I attempted to buy what the shop assistant interpreted as "Big Mouse" magazine, but that's another story and you've heard it before anyway. richie1878 February 18th, 2007, 02:33 PM [QUOTE=Bunnyman;11783766]Were you the heckler by any chance Awayooooo? :? Neville Southall told me to fuck off once, One of my mates was told to fuck off by Howard Kendall at a sportsmans dinner, he was being a pissed up annoying twat though. Scarecrow February 18th, 2007, 02:52 PM Was he the bloke who shouted 'bollocks' when Howard said his best memory of football was managing in Spain? richie1878 February 18th, 2007, 03:20 PM Not sure, think it was in the Commies Club in Crosby, could be wrong though, was around 5 or 6 years ago now. Same mate who shout `sign the fucking contract` to Michael Ball in the Grapes in Formby, a couple of seconds later he got up and left. My mates are bell ends, in a nice kind of way though. Paul D May 8th, 2007, 02:38 PM Winter Pops for city SOME of the music industry’s biggest names will be wooed to perform at a Winter Pops festival in the new Liverpool arena. The week-long event will run from January 13 next year, the day after the Capital of Culture launch party officially opens the Kings Dock venue. Promoters are promising to secure a line-up of headlining talent for the winter gigs. Next year’s Summer Pops will also be held at the 10,600 seater arena. Bob Prattey, chief executive of the Arena and Conference Centre (ACC) Liverpool, said today: “It’s great to be able to make our first announcement about a major musical event in the arena. “The Winter Pops will be an entirely new entertainment offering for the city while the Summer Pops, taking place for the first time in this fantastic purpose-built venue, promises to be a very special event. “We expect today’s announcements to be just the first in a series of exciting developments over coming months about the kind of events ACC Liverpool is bringing to the city.” The deal to stage the pops events has been struck between promoter CMP and ACC Liverpool. No public subsidy is involved. CMP boss Chas Cole said: “We’re delighted to announce the new Winter Pops event which we think will be a major highlight on the city’s entertainment calendar. “It’s too early to say who will be appearing but we expect to be able to announce one very exciting element of the event very soon. “January isn’t a traditional touring month in the UK for stars but Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status should help us to attract some great names. “We’ll begin work on confirming the line-up as soon as this year’s Summer Pops are over.” Music legends who have previously played at the Summer Pops include the Who, Sir Elton John, Paul Simon and Brian Wilson. The 2007 Summer Pops line-up – due to appear at Aintree racecourse – already includes Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Girls Aloud and Steely Dan. I think its normally used as a giant beer hall and for show jumping.
