Never been, but I'd like to visit. I have an overall positive impression, but I don't know much about the city.

I see Edmonton as the slightly hip kid in a very conservative family (Alberta).

"how many plp know edminton has the largest urban park system in north amarica.."

Well, how big is it excactly, and how much bigger is it than all the other urban park systems in North Amercia?

i like edmonton, have a few close family friends living there, but most of the young coming over here to toronto/waterloo to study, work and stay.

been there a couple of times, the mall is interesting, i like the river valley, reminds me of the don river valley here in toronto. but its good for short visits, wouldn't really want to live there. close to jasper and banff and drumheller =)

i think its better than calgary.

I've not visited there in a good 26 years, but yes I liked it very much. It reminded me a lot of Winnipeg, and at the time I liked it better than Calgary as it was older and cozier. I went out there applying for a job as an Engineer,
but was not successful.

I found the opposite, oddly enough! From what I've heard, U of A is expanding at a fairly rapid pace and is doing a lot to attract students and faculty from other parts of the country.

Green, green, green Edmonton. Love the river valley and festivals they have there.

I'm indifferent, never been, probably never will. There's so much to see around the world. I just don't feel the attraction.

Edmonton's 7,400-hectare River Valley park system is the longest urban park in North America. It is 21.7 times larger than New York City's 341-hectare Central Park.

Edmonton has 225 kilometres of designated bikeways.

When I did my western-Canada bar-hopping tour late last year we went to Edmonton but only for 3 days.

West Edmonton Mall I found to be a complete waste of time though I don't know what I was expecting by visiting a mall. Had the most fun on Whyte (White?) St/Av. Overall I'd say I like the city.

not for my relatives... they finish their bachelors there and then they head off here to get their masters and ph.ds... more international recognition. They end up loving Toronto more, and stay here, since all of my cousins were offered great jobs before they graduated.

well, this is from my personal experience only.... i do not know about the average people.

I think that says the "longest"...as in contigeous...not the "largest" park "system"....other cities have larger park "systems"...Toronto has 3 major river valley park systems running through it's city proper....the Humber, the Don and the Rouge...each of which is similar in size to Edmonton's River Valley system. That's on top of Toronto's other city parks.

As a Canadian, I'd say I'm proud to have a city like Edmonton in my country.
It's a beautiful city, one of the world's biggest northern cities, and if yuo can tolerate the cold, then all the power to the people of Edmonton! ;)

Edmonton is a great city to visit, and a great place to live (lived there for two years). The river valley park system is definitely one of the best in Canada - and easily one of the largest. It is extremely accessible from downtown - I used to go for lunch walks down there...out of the office building, and down to the river in about 5-10 minutes.

For those not familiar with Edmonton and it's great park system and multi-use paths, Edmonton maintains some 250kms of multi-use park paths (150kms through the continuous valley park system), and an additional 60+ kms through the city...Calgary though still has the most extensive in North America at 635kms of pathways.

i thing i like about edmonton is that it's surpisingly somewhat urban. the areas east of DT (oliver), whyte ave and the university are such awesome neighbourhoods. all have easy LRT access, tight high denisity neighbourhoods and you can walk everwhere for everything.

here's a pic from the oliver area looking towards DT

http://www.ninethousand.net/Images/SkylineWest.jpg

and the river valley and it's ravines are sweet. enough paved trails for rollerbladers, joggers, etc for a good 12 hour go and hundreds of kilometers of off road/dirt/singletrack trails for mountain bikers and walkers.

only thing i hate about edmonton is the cold. but there hasn't been much of that this winter anyways. e-town's alright. but those damn oilers better make some noise in the playoffs.

I think Edmonton has a beautiful river valley and some REALLY great festivals. If only Vancouver had a couple.
WhyteAve is kinda cool but thats it.
I admit I haven't been there in 8 years so I'm sure things have changed BUT...........I thought the entire core was a desolate run down kinda place. Looks like the city just gave up on it and told everyone to move out. There was no urban feel, interesting neighbourhoods, streetscapes, nothing.
I haver heard of the RiceHoward way but know nothing about it.

^It's looking much nicer lately. I was surprised when I went downtown for the Champcar race last year - I worked downtown in 99 - and it's looking better all the time. Of course, it doesn't have the urban life Van has - and "may" even lack Calgary's (haven't spent enough time to really judge) - but west of downtown is buzzing with new development (anyone from Edm can confirm??).

Regardless, Edmonton is still a great place to live...the areas around Whyte I always found full of activity - especially in summer.

I haven't been, but I think I would like it. It seems to be overshadowed by Calgary often. I think it'd remind me of Ottawa quite a bit.

Edomonton has some hidden places that are great ( the paths through the
Brick Yard) , for one.
West of Edmonton is Booming yes, many new neighborhoods all the time , like Suder Greens , Cameron heights , parkland , Glastonbury, and The Grange . Just to name a few

Those booming neighbourhoods in West Edmonton are enjoying the one of the best living standard all over Canada--- they are in Aspen Parkland area, thus the vegetation varies from Grassland, Deciduous to Boreal type, a very diverse area.

Most of my family lives there... nice place, seems a bit dull other than the U of A and Whyte Av area but I guess they have the Oilers and the Eskimos as well as some great concerts
