Try not to get too frustrated. This building has had groundworks, pilling and foundations completed. It is now undergoing basement construction (rather swiftly I might add) and you can already see steelwork appearing at street level. Once basement construction is complete and the steel starts to rise (there is no concrete core) it will shoot up!! Remember how quickly the Heron Tower rose once steel erection began

Ground work must be rather complex. It takes time. Actually, it's refreshing to see such progress after so much time of no activity.

the basement works are very complex and an innovative design which required meticulous attention to detail. the idea was to build the welfare and construction office facilities into the basement, along with a lorry loading area designed to keep the whole construction process almost within the footprint of the building, an important issue in the city where space is in short supply.
laing o'rouke produced an animated methodology of the whole construction plan for the building a few months ago which brilliantly illustrated just how complex and frankly clever this build will be, but i've searched, and i can't for the life of me find it again. if anyone does come across the video, please let me know.

I don't think its having a normal core it's just steel work- I think!
The seventh shape February 16th, 2012, 12:48 PM Why is it taking so long to see a core rising for this?
SkyscraperSuperman February 16th, 2012, 12:57 PM Have a look at the video, they need to finish the all the basement construction/groundworks and have the ground floor ready so that supplies can be delivered. Since this building is all steel with no concrete core, it will shoot up when it's ready to rise so just be patient for now, you can't build a 225m skyscraper without making sure the groundworks are completed! I'm sure some of you saw how quickly Heron Tower rose, it'll be a similar story with this.
Whereabouts are they now in the construction according to the video^^
I'd say probably about 2:05, the ground floor slab hasn't been fully constructed/tidied up yet, as you can see from the photos, but I'd say it was closer to completion than starting.

eddyk February 17th, 2012, 04:16 AM On the notice board at the site it said the steel should be five floors high within a month ^^
I imagine by the time you visit for Christmas L122 will be high in the sky.
You will also have the Completed Shard and a few others towers in the city to look at. As well as many more dotted around London.
Discounting the on-hold again Pinnacle there are 13+ towers over 100m U/C in London.

ThatOneGuy March 2nd, 2012, 04:07 AM It would look better with silver steel and black cladding imo. Yellow steel looks weird.
eddyk March 2nd, 2012, 04:24 AM It's only got the odd yellow highlight. Sort of a signature of Richard Rogers the architect.

I can see he also likes x-bracing! His biggest project is 3WTC and it doesn't have any apparent yellow steel. Maybe he's not allowed using it.
Madman March 3rd, 2012, 10:37 AM ^ 3WTC is no where near R+S+H's biggest project. They're part of that small club of international firms (like Fosters etc) that can be trusted to design and coordinate flagship new airports etc.
cloud32 March 3rd, 2012, 01:57 PM I can see he also likes x-bracing! His biggest project is 3WTC and it doesn't have any apparent yellow steel. Maybe he's not allowed using it.
Maybe he just didn't feel it would fit with the other WTC buildings around it. Plus if he used it for every single project it would get slightly boring dont you think? :)
cloud32 March 3rd, 2012, 01:57 PM Also, the work going on on Leadenhall is great to see, especially with all the steel going up.

beaky March 18th, 2012, 09:11 AM aarhusforever, i already have a nation. telling people what their identity must be is fundamentally repulsive to the human condition. your tagline ' many states, one nation' shows a complete disregard for personal freedom and for the importance of learning from the mistakes of history. for example, those of yugoslavia.

PortoNuts March 26th, 2012, 10:46 PM Aon stockholders approve London move
Aons stockholders have voted in favour of redomiciling its headquarters from Chicago to London. The move was approved by 98% of Aons stockholders.
Aon is set to found a new UK-based group holding company, Aon UK, which will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in place of the present listing for Aon Corporation.
The broker expects the share deal to close around 2 April. Chicago will remain as Aons American business base, and the brokers tax jurisdiction will shift to the UK from Delaware.
Aon has listed a number of reasons for the change, none of them tax, but a strong impetus is likely to have come from the pending new tax regime for controlled foreign companies (the CFC rules).
Aon chief executive Greg Case and about half of Aons executive team will relocate to London. This includes chief financial officer Christa Davies, Aon Risk Solutions chief executive Steve McGill, chief operating officer Michael OConnor and general counsel Peter Lieb.

usually skyscrapers get slower as they progress - it gets windier and they'll need to lift steel further.
the building does taper as it climbs and we're going onto better weather - so they may speed up, fingers crossed. -- Pal

steppenwolf April 13th, 2012, 12:51 AM I’m worried that various fears about perceived security threats are going to result in some late planning applications to change the ‘public’ space at the bottom of the building into a secured private space.
I’m certain that a ring of vehicle proof bollards will end up encircling the space. All it takes is for one pushy health and safety jobsworth to make it their mission and it’ll happen.
I’d also be amazed if the space was even remotely public in feel. Security will prevent photos being taken in the space as is the way with all private ‘public’ spaces within buildings. Look no further than the generous ‘public’ space under Foster and Partners’ Tower Place next to the Tower of London. If you try to take a photograph there, security will actually run towards you to stop you.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if one or two controlled entrances were set up along a new perimeter to allow access into the space. Again, someone will raise the security question and insist than anyone entering the space is checked for explosives or guns. I imagine airport style security gates will be installed for public visitors and swipe cards will be used for office workers.
If this ends up feeling like a truly public space, as is shown in the visualisation above, I’ll eat my hair. Although I hope I’m proved wrong.

RandomNameTag April 13th, 2012, 04:11 AM Wait but one question, why don't I see a core on this building like the shard and the walkie talkie?
Fix'd. Honestly, I don't know why Fenchruch has a core and this dosen't. Fenchurch is shorter and bulkier, so a core there dosen't make as much since IMO.
agus_southMVD April 13th, 2012, 04:13 AM Wait but one question, why don't I see a core on this building like the shard and the Leadenhall building?
This IS the Leadenhall building :)
About frenchurch street, i think it's because there was a building there and they dismantled it but left its core.
RandomNameTag April 13th, 2012, 04:18 AM ^^^^
This IS the Leadenhall building :)
I know. Reread his post again. It's written like he's comparing Leadenhall to Leadenhall. Leadenhall dosen't have a core. Fenchurch does. It should be reversed.
agus_southMVD April 13th, 2012, 04:26 AM I see, I had edited the post but it seems I didn't send it...
About Frenchurch, I thought it was because they had left the core of the original building, but now I see I was wrong.

Yeah it's almost weird because on a typical construction site there's a lot of sand, dust, water and all-around dirt flying everywhere ... Here they probably don't even need to change their clothes after work :D

SO143 May 2nd, 2012, 10:42 AM Cheesegrater Reaches Passes First Stage
Published on 01-05-2012 by Skyscrapernews.com
http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/3084CheesegraterReachesPassesFirstStage_pic1.jpg
Construction is progressing on the Leadenhall Building, more popularly known as the Cheesegrater, with the first stage of the tower now starting to be fleshed out above ground making the shape of tower finally apparent to all.
Lead by main contractor Laing O'Rourke, the concrete floor slab the tower will sit on should now be complete with the steelwork and floor decking up the fifth floor. The northern service core that will provide the lift shafts has risen to the same height. This section can be identified by the use of yellow steel. The next step will be to start construction above this level, something that has already begun in the case of the white steel of the central core.
One notable part of the construction process involves some of the most impressive transporting of recent years. The stair cores of the tower will have 48 metre long steel girders and these are to be transported to the site in one piece. Putting this into perspective, 48 metres is the same height as Swansea's civic centre clock tower.
They will be transported by Hindle's, the firm who recently moved the large parts of the Olympic Cable Car down the River Thames and are experienced in moving large loads to building sites through the capital. Hindle's will be doing this by utilising abnormal low-loaders, and they will of course have a traffic escort to reach the site. The date of this will depend on weather conditions.
Once completed in 2014 the Leadenhall Building will be 224.5 metres tall and the main London headquarters for Aon, the insurance company. In the meantime architecture aficionados will have a new landmark building to watch rise now the Shard approaches completion.
