AL-Nasser twin tower has nearly fineshed the construction stage and now they are putting glass to cover the towers and making the intewrnal design.

another tower next to AL-nasser towers is also in the same stage.

Behind AL-Nasser towers is Qatar commercial bank tower , they have just started construction of the first floor, for about a year and a half they were working in the bacement only, it is extreamly slow.

These three towers are all infront of Doha Cornich, at the begining of the towers area.

I also heared that there will be a modification in AL-Mohanna commercail tower, and old Kahramaa building (5 stories high; infront of sheraton roaundabout) will be demolished, maybe because no towers less than 15 stories high are suppose to be in this location.

Never seen or hear about it before.
Tried to goggle it, but didn't come up with anything. Seems like something that came from Metropolis.

Many projects on the internet are still in the drawing or design stage and still yet to be approved. I suppose this is one of them.

Love to see it come up, but very uncreative design, i may add.

Six construct of Belgium is the main contractor ( in JV with Midmac) and M/s PROJACS is the Project managers of this project. This Tower is definitely a reality and structure is most likely to be completed by October 2006.Taillibert's concept was one of the many considered for the project. However the one I have posted above is the approved concept and is currently under construction.

Manojp mp,
I'm saying this bcoz many projects were given too much media attention & fuss, but unfortunately were either canceled or put on hold eventually. I'm talking about projects like the National Library, City Centre expansion (phase 2, 3, 4), and i can't remember some more right now.

on the other hand, i've looked @ the master plan of khalifah sport city & Aspire sport academy, and it didn't included this tower. unless they've decided in the last minute to build it, and that would create a major obstacle. of all the past planning experiences, we always think & decide @ the last minute, we never learn from our mistakes, and the result is more waste of time & money.

but i have to say that i disagree with Mohamad when he says that the tower shouldn't be erected on the bay. as a matter of fact, we MUST erecte it on the bay. u see, we in Doha need a landmark that can both works as tourist attraction & at the same time as a modern lighthouse, that can be seen from a far. i mean it sure fits, Jeddah has it's water fountain, Dubai has Burj Alarab, and Kuwait has it's twin towers.

anyhow, Manojp mp, i'll drive towards the construction site tonight in my way to Hayat plaza, and if the tower isn't being built, i'm not talking to you!! :(

Guys, don't you feel that the plan of the west bay area is not suitable for height racing?. As everyone knows that we have one of the most beautiful Cornish in the GCC .unfortunately, all the height racing building are going to be built there. All the buildings are very close to each other like the only land that we have is the West Bay area !!
I have to admit that our plans is really shit and you well see how bad it is in the next coming years… when the traffic will become the main problem there . At this time do you know what will happen? They will get ride of all the roundabouts and the green to change their shitty plans again .
I know this is another issue and it's not related to what you were saying, but I feel like I have to say what I'm expecting from all the things that are going on the west bay area.

when they plan to make roads on the diplomatic area , they never put in their mind that this area is for a height racing!! And what happened to make them change their plan is when Shik Mohammed bin Rashid visited the emirates embassy , which located in this area. he criticize their plan by saying how could such a land that have a good commercial location to be devoted for embassies !!
as a result of this they change their plan … now the problem in this area is all the towers will be packed and the roads have just two paths each !!

I agree with you regarding city center & Library building. And you are right regarding last minute decision regarding Sports City Tower. It was indeed decided in the last moment and you wouldnt find it in the master plan of sports city.If you are going there , site is located adjacent to Hamad aquatic center right opposite to the stadium. In fact the area where it is being built was all Tiled as part of hard landscape and had to be removed 2 months after installation for this tower.Bad planning at its best!!!. So I am sure speak to me after your visit to the sports city.. cheers

I agree. You see, it wouldnt look abnormal to have a tall tower inland, nearer to the desert. But it will most definitely look abnormal for a person to build an 80 floor building adjacent to a pretty small bay. It isnt really nice, and it basically shrinks the overall size of downtown Doha. Also, please dont forget that the Doha bay is pretty small and yet many planes cross over it as they approach Doha international airport, so it does cause a great deal of danger for the highrise towers. As for the idea of the sports city tower, then Im glad it isnt built near the bay. :)

Great, another stupied tower ! I swear I sometimes feel there are ppl sitting there with a magic marker and sketching up something overnight. Then they bring it to doha and tell the decision makers "look wow a european architecut did this and it will look great" then land and a couple of millions is dedicated to the project. No real study, no real research, no nothing, its like we will build it now then we will worry about parking, the traffic, the zoning problem. this isnt how cities get built !! and how smart building such a tall tower in a highly conjested residentail area, im sure ppl wont be happy about that. And there is no way in heck this will be built in time, unless they intend for it to be a "sucessful project" like the Losial MotoGP circuit.

we in Doha need a landmark that can both works as tourist attraction & at the same time as a modern lighthouse, that can be seen from a far. i mean it sure fits, Jeddah has it's water fountain, Dubai has Burj Alarab, and Kuwait has it's twin towers.

Exactly my thoughts, I think we need a beatiful 40 or so tower that sort of resembles a modern lighthouse and it could be our landmark, instead of the sheroten hotel.

Acctually I beg to differ, i dont think the Sheroten hotel is a sad landmark for doha. It was built in 1982, and during the days most of doha was flat, so was most part of the region. The hotel, at the time was considered very tall and it was one of the very few if any pyrmid shapped building. Not to mention how many conferences and conventions, from the GCC meetings to the WTO took place in its halls. Thats why it has become to be a symbol of qatar. But i think we still need to upgrade to something newer !!

Don't know what the site next to the GPO is, but the National Library was designed by a Japanese architect along the lines of a similar structure in Japan. Taisei patented the erection methodology for the structure, but the contract in Doha went to a Turkish contractor with no such expertise. I guess the delays are caused by the Turks trying to subcontract to the Japanese but not being able to afford it because they were lowest cost bidders.

Qatar's biggest problem comes from going for the lowest bidder in every project! You get what you pay for...

This is not good news at all! :(

A fire has broken out at a partially completed skyscraper in downtown Doha, Qatar.

The blaze erupted mid-morning on Thursday, sending thick clouds of smoke into the sky above the city.

It is unclear what caused the fire, although initial reports say sparks from welding work may have started the blaze.

Officials at the Capital Security Department said an investigation was under way and they would not release any details until that was complete.

Civil defence units evacuated construction staff from the site, and emergency officials say no injuries have been reported.

The building is believed to be part of the al-Nasr Tower complex close to the seafront Corniche area of the city.

Police have blocked roads around the site, causing traffic gridlock in much of the capital's downtown area.

Doha is in the midst of a frenzied construction boom on the back of surging economic growth and preparations for the city to play host to the Asian Games in 2006.

Most of the manual construction work is carried out by migrant labourers brought in from South Asia.

Al Emadi Tower

Located in the business centre of Doha, the Al Emadi Tower is an 18-storey rotunda office building offering 18,000 square metres of space. The building features two basement levels and provides parking for over 200 cars.

“This tower has a radial plan and circular glazed perimeter, with an exposed circular core that appears to be scooped out from the main rotunda mass. It promises to be one of the more striking towers on the Doha skyline,” describes GHD’s Architectural Group Manager in the Middle East, Ihab Inany.

GHD was engaged by Mohamed Ali Al-Emadi to deliver the architectural design, engineering and documentation, as well as contract administration through to final completion.

Al Madar Tower

Unlike traditional office building designs, the floor space of the 24-level Al Madar Tower increases as the building ascends. The 23rd office floor is 17 percent larger than the second floor.

“The unusual cantilevered design is visually appealing and has also maximised the floor space in the building,” cites Inany.

Constructed on a relatively tight ground footprint of 3,479 square metres, the building will provide 16,000 square metres of floor space and parking space for 259 cars.

The facades are dressed with high-performance double glazed curtain walls with large louvres on the side elevations to reduce glare and heat load.

The design of this building is nearly complete. GHD is providing the client, Ali Abdullah Al Mashhadi, with architectural and engineering design services, documentation, tender process management and contract administration through to final certification.

The latest I heared that the second qatar tower (60 stories high) is cancelled because the owner did not like the design, I think the design is nice, but it is not economical, there is very little space in the top floors.

Some towers look nice, others seem a bit ridiculous. It would be nice for Qatar to develop into a classy and elegant city like Paris, instead of taking Dubai's lead and becoming a Gulf Vegas. Anyways, I hope the Gulf States someday become one of the worlds economic powerhouses to rival Western Europe and the Eastern US seaboard.

Look at Doha's changing skyline! Can you believe this is Doha??

http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/2939/cornishedoha8uq.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The first building on the left is Commericalbank Plaza, followed by the Al-Nasr Twin Towers. You can see the Dafna towers almost reaching final height without the glass cladding. Also, the olympic tower is beautifully designed with the Asian Olympic Scheme 2006, and you can see massive construction near the Sheraton Hotel in the Far Left..

Dont you just love Doha!!

ZX, Shangri-La hotel is part of the City Center Doha concept. However, most of the buildings in the Dafna area are apartments. The offices include the buildings near the Sheraton roundabout (From Barzan tower all the way to the sheraton roundabout). They include the Palm Towers, Salam Towers, Q-tel building, Bidaa Tower, the long cylinder tower, and ect..

Fast improvement. the structures might look ugly now, but they will cover the concrete structure with a steel fascade and illuminate it like the Eiffel Tower. It will look absolutely superb. How many meters do you guys think it is so far? I would give it 90-100 meters now.

Qatar Cat
April 8th, 2006, 10:53 AM
Yes, third and fourth pix are of Hamad Medical City - which is going to be the biggest in the Middle East, or maybe even the world, but don't quote me on this. I will get my hands on some fresh (insider) pix of the medical city structures sometime tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Oh and I really wanted to use this smiley, so my apologies whoever left a comment above - you are by no means a weirdo. Think of it as a smiley to myself :p

This is the tallest building in Qatar right now...

Qatar Cat

Halawala, there are so many new towers coming up that I lost track of them. I am not sure which one this is! There is an insanely tall something being built close to the City Centre... Maybe it's the one you are talking about. I will drive around and search for the 44 West Bay :^)

And as for what is taller now - look below. This was taken 2 days ago, so it is pretty recent, lol.

I love the way our skyline is maturing. I enjoy the clutter the beatiful buildings. Even though there isnt much of planning and zonning for these towers, but they just seem to fall in togther.

However Id still wish they'd be a certain style of design to all of them. Instead of just building anything which looks good in paper, developers should look at the potential buildings going to be constructed around thier towers and try to follow a design pattern.

Plus I would really hate to see dubai tower and palm tower and the likes being built. They will just dwarf the whole skyline and destroy our cornish by attracting attention away from it.

Does anyone know if construction has started on the 4-tower hotels around city center?

They are suppose to be 50-story high each.

Qatar Cat
April 8th, 2006, 12:19 PM
Of course it has started. Ages ago. And as far as I know, there will be 5 towers around City Centre.

Check the last post on my page, Construction Part II (http://qatarcat.blogspot.com/2006/04/doha-construction-photos-part-ii.html) , you can see the side of a structure on the 7th image (with some workers posing for me). And you can also see the billboard sign of the 2 hotels on the same pic.

I understand what your saying-- but many new buildings are the same size as the palm towers so they will fit in a new skyline. Cheer up, the more the merrier!

I really appreciate this Qatar Cat. Thank you for the great pics.
Qatar4ever I also think that Dubai Tower is a big mistake. Not because of the design or the length or anything like that It is just too embarrassing for us to admit that the tallest scraper in Qatar is Dubai Tower. Why don't they call it something else like Doha Tower for example, it would have been a lot better, and by that we also prove to neighboring countries that we are booming as well and that it is not just that Dubai has been expanding and extending their influence to reach out other cities in neighboring countries.

Hmmm I tend to agree with Dave on the above. But then again, there is Doha Tower already, and it's gonna be HUGE. Besides, I bet Dubai tower won't stay the tallest forever. There are bound to be bigger and taller towers in the future. If you ask me - it's insane. It is also insane that all these towers are in one area. No parking, and if past experiences mean anything - what about the possibility of electricity going down in the summer every now and then?

No that you've taken a couple of pics for some skyscraper addicts and thus supported our very bad habbit, you will continue to post on at least a weekly basis all and every possible construction sites in Doha. If we do not get our pics we will send PM, emails, attack your blog and continue to nag until you provide with our fix of updated pics.

Wakrah,

Umm yeah I could of course, only I have no clue which building this is. Come to that, I have to admit that I have absolutely no sense of direction, and I have no idea what street my office is at. Besides, I don't even know what my compound is called. Now you want me to go to some STREET and find some TOWER, lol. If you could post a map with an arrow pointing roughly at where it is - I could get there. I can read maps (contrary to the populat belief that women can't, hehe). Or maybe there is some landmark on that street that I definitely know?

anyhow, i wish i can supply you with a map of the tower's location, but when it comes to computers, i'm a total dummy. but it's located near ramada junction, opposite applebee's & toys'r'us, you can't missed it. and if you happen to be there, would you be so kind to take some pix of hotel Le Cigal, just few meters away.
