View Full Version : SYDNEY: 185 Macquarie Street -15st/52m/res
CULWULLA April 4th, 2003, 03:35 AM The proposed 15st/52m apartment block opposite State library was approved on monday night.Currently theres a 15st fugly office tower on the site which backs onto the BT Tower site. the developer wants to start the up market apartments this year. The planner told me they have to sort out the problems below ground with the rail tunnel being only 1.4m from the excavations.
heres a model pic fab took.

SinCity April 4th, 2003, 03:50 AM Yippee! More fugliness to go in our town!!!!! :D
....... I just sit here all day long waiting and waiting, and waiting some more, for lovely news like this ........... ;)
Muse April 4th, 2003, 04:27 AM Good news of course, but if we could juuuussst get rid of the Investec Building @ 167 Macquarie St as well, we would almost have a "perfect deuce".
Macquaire St is a nice traditional spot for boutique apartment/hotel develpoments - classssy!
MrTall April 4th, 2003, 04:41 AM That building to the right of the approved one looks VERY slender. Which building is it?
I have a better proposal for this site. Demolish also the two adjacent buildings and whack up a 50 storey office tower (by an international architect, of course). A prominent site like this should not be allowed to be wasted on puny developments such as this.

that thin 14storey scraper is the Macquarie Chambers. it houses dental offices.it has tiles down its facade.

brizer April 4th, 2003, 06:56 AM 185 Macquarie was originally included in the BT/Foster scheme that is now 126 (?) Phillip Street but got dropped off somewhere along the line. I, too, hoped that Macquarie Chambers - not exactly a visual delight - would miraculously be subsumed into the Foster design, but it was not to be.
There are height restrictions on Macquarie Street and Martin Place (overshadowing public places/parks) which prevent a 50 storey job as BT & Foster found out.
Who is designing the 185 apartments?
Fabian April 4th, 2003, 09:52 AM The FAI Building is pretty ugly, rundown and poorly designed along with the other building's in that area. Great to see another 70's tower going despite being against such development's.
finn April 4th, 2003, 10:52 AM Macquarie Chambers is a true shocker, and I believe it has now been strata titled and sold off to private investors - which basically means that it will be basically impossible to redevelop >(
The only hope is that the body corporate will all vote to refurbish their tower - and especially the facade! - at some point in the future.
Fabian September 2nd, 2003, 10:42 PM Apartments in the tower are now on sale.
Fabian October 4th, 2003, 02:25 AM Sales on the tower have been impressive. Only 14 apartments remain!!!:)
[MakkabI] October 5th, 2003, 06:52 AM Nice apartments tower :)
Fabian October 18th, 2003, 02:38 AM I didn't tell you that there are only 42 apartments in this tower and it's being promoted as a boutique apartment tower, nice for this part of town.
Fabian December 22nd, 2003, 09:48 PM I recently walked up Macquarie St and the all the tenants have moved out, ahead of the conversion.
Fabian January 17th, 2004, 08:40 AM The conversion of this shocking 1970's office scraper into apartments has begun with a medley of jackhammers, along what is normally a fairly quiet street.
The workers have moved in and begun stripping the interiors

Has anyone sourced a rendering of the apartments? I can't seem to find one, and only a few of the pics above are showing for me.
CULWULLA January 18th, 2004, 03:05 AM crone/nation have designed it. ill try and find a pic at work.
Fabian January 22nd, 2004, 07:26 AM I walked past the site today and scaffholding is being assembled on it's exterior as the inside continues to be guttered.
Fabian January 29th, 2004, 08:07 AM Here's a better and more detailed pic of the model
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid102/p626e5b4310f0be9ee867f439e192c6dc/f9c92369.jpg
Fabian February 6th, 2004, 01:37 PM Favelle bought this to my attention in the 126 Phillip St thread when he noticed a crane in the background, thinking it was on site, but this crane is actually for this development.
Fabian February 7th, 2004, 09:04 AM View from Sydney Harbour Today. The entire Macquarie St side is now covered in scaffholding and draped in mesh.

Muse February 8th, 2004, 04:42 AM Just past the site now (currently @ The State Library) and the Lindores crane is looking nice :)
There's indecipherable wording on the street level hoarding. Different shaped lettering, letters upside down, words that read strange. The closest I could work out is perhaps the construction company's name and something to do with 'Abode' (as in living quarters).
If somebody can work this cryptic 'brain teaser' out, let us know!!!
Tony P February 16th, 2004, 05:39 PM From THIS LINK (http://www.cadenceaust.com)
http://www.cadenceaust.com/photos/macquarie-street.jpg
The site tells that "Cadence Australia" are the project managers of 185 Macquarie Street and it contains only 26 luxury apartments, with ground retail and 60 parking spots.
It looks a bit different to the model and has less apartments according to Fabian's info (26 apartments vs 42), so I'm wondering if this is an older proposal?
Tony P February 16th, 2004, 05:48 PM Actually, I've just realised Fabians pic is not the Macquarie street side. So, indeed, this would the correct render.

I went to have a look at this "brain teaser" today but I was treated only to construction signs. It must of been removed.
Fabian March 19th, 2004, 09:25 AM It's coming down guys, very much to my surprise.

CULWULLA June 16th, 2004, 01:40 AM when i viewed plans of this last year, there was concerns of the nearby train tunnel right under the site. The excavators have to be extremely careful of vibrations ect.

Intresting Cul ! How will them Damper the effects up teh building ?

Fabian July 30th, 2004, 02:33 PM This was one site I've known about and finally got around to looking at. Minor site indeed although surely better than the tragic Euro Tower.
Are you serious??? At least there is always something to look at when passing by Eurotower. The guys down there have always been hard at it since day one.
This site has been idle for two months :bash: This is turning into one tragedy.
climbing_crane July 30th, 2004, 03:19 PM Come on Fabian the site at Euro tower was one euro opportunity to build at least a 100 metre scraper in the absolute least. It was a site in the absolute primest area where buildings were sprouting out all over the place.
And wake up Fabian. The best part of a construction site is the excavations. You will always look back on it once it's built.
Fabian July 30th, 2004, 11:15 PM I was refering to construction. Never did I say anything about what should of been built on the sites.
Fabian September 7th, 2004, 09:34 AM I went past the site this afternoon after studying at the State Library and a piece of hoarding was left on the site, the first sign anyone has been on the site as of late. Otherwise things are still unchanged from my last pics.
Also Cadence Australia is in charge of this one. Here's a link to their website www.cadenceaust.com. You can find a render and short description of the development on the site.
PetaByte November 25th, 2004, 04:52 AM This one looks like it's starting up today. The Grocon boys are onsite.

The below pic posted by CULWULLA on May 4. Nothing above ground yet for 185 Macquarie aka Cadence as they might still be dealing with the foundation. Of course the Bovis Lend Lease crane is the one coming down on the eastern side of 126 Phillip, seen in the last pic post when it would have still been @ full height.
Go Grocon!!

Muse April 7th, 2006, 11:20 AM The one to the left of this one in the most recent shot NEEDS to go...Yeah, for a mid-70s building it sure is a shocker. The external air-conditioning units on Park House don't help any either. If 185 turns out to be quite attractive, it will make Park House even look that much more worse standing alongside.

I think the one on the right is far worse! The one on the left would be quite alright if not for the a/c units.

CULWULLA June 15th, 2006, 01:26 AM yes, its not really an "impact" skyscraper. and its design isnt really exceptional, its location and and views are its finest points!
ParraMan June 15th, 2006, 07:57 PM Its profile fits into the Macquarie St streetscape, which suits me fine. But thanks for that last shot Cul, I can remember that building on the right now, that has always had to go!

Ideal city pad or home office in the centre of Sydney’s legal & medical precinct.
This conveniently located one bedroom apartment - opposite the State Library - is a rare offering in one of the last remaining residential buildings being built in Macquarie Street.
Designed by architect Bob Nation and interiors by Eugene Marchese, 185 Macquarie Street is due for completion at the end of October 2006.
With a total area of 52 sqm, the apt features an open plan living/dining room with full height sliding glass doors opening onto a timber decked balcony facing Macquarie Street, kitchen with Miele appliances, integrated refrigerator, one bedroom with built-ins, full bathroom with BATH, & separate laundry. Stone floor finishes, ducted heating and cooling air conditioning system, intercom & electronic security systems.

papervagina November 10th, 2006, 09:56 AM Nice pics, Muse. Did you get any of the back? I walked past this morning and noticed that there appears to be a garden between this and DB. The name of the building is also now a rather awkward '185 Macquarie Residences'.
CULWULLA November 10th, 2006, 10:56 AM it really is just a 50m gap filler. ok finishes. but no doubt its location is main selling point. also bonus if your a book worm.
Fabian November 12th, 2006, 03:34 AM Did you get those photos on Friday Muse? I went right past it on Friday (just before 12pm) and it looked nice. Nice addition to the street. I didnt take photos as I will wait until the remaining work is done.
Muse November 12th, 2006, 05:18 AM I got them around 2.00PM on Friday Fabian.
@ papervag - No, I didn't see the back of it. Will check it out next time.
IMO It's OK & not offensive at all. Not quite EuroTower Mark II. A bit blocky and a 70s throwback esp. the material they've covered it in - I see a lot of 70s office buildings covered with the stuff. The wooden louvres are a nice touch though & it looks like a solid structure.
