Ok, back on topic, two questions. Does the construction stop during the Hajj? Will the tower partially open before being finished 100%, or will they wait for the spire, clock, etc. to complete?

please keep on topic. be tolerant to others but nevertheless don't forget:
'Toleranz heißt, die Intoleranz nicht zu tolerieren. (Karl Popper)'
('Tolerance means not to tolerate intolerance.') :)

as i mentioned before, i think this building is amazing. of course they could have chosen a better place but maybe it's this very special location which gives the abraj al-bait the icing on the cake.

The render is too small. In any case, they should use the numerals on the right. The ones on the left are western.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d8/EgyptphoneKeypad.jpg

Both are Arabic numerals ! The one on the right was mostly used in the Middle-East and that on the left in Northern-Africa. Europeans adopted the latter because it was more convenient to use with Arabic modern mathematics (algebra) than the roman numerals that prevailed for more than one and a half millenia.

Even another 4 more buildings with the same size and capacity, it is still far more than enough to accommodate 2 millions pilgrims.

The second concern is: most of the pilgrims are poor, coming from the poor Muslim countries such as northern Africa, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. They cannot afford to stay in this hotel.

i understand why VRS blames it on Global Warming.
Global Warming doesn't only mean high temperatures, it also means unpredictable patterns in weather.

having said that, one should realize that Saudi Arabia is one of the driest places on Earth. it only rains once or twice a year. sometimes even less.
for a country like this, flooding in that scale is certainly something worth turning attention of people.

....a flood happens, and you blame it on global warming?

There has been quite a few major flood events around the world this year.

It was also quite a year for Major Typhoons in the Pacific Ocean. We also got to see another rare Southern Hemisphere Storm (one that spins clockwise instead of counterclockwise), Cyclone Anja. Lucky for the US and Central America that this year was unusually quiet in the Atlantic. However, the US has seen some serious flooding events as well caused by heavy rainstorms.

So no, we're not blaming it for just one flood. We're blaming it for all of them.

One of the floor height was almost 9 meters but floor purpose has been changed which is why the floor height has been reduced by 4 meters to 5 meters.

Makkah to be made world’s most advanced city: Governor

JEDDAH: Steps are currently under way to make Makkah the world’s most advanced city, said Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper reported yesterday.

“A comprehensive study has been launched with the participation of Saudi and international experts, including those from the United Nations, to develop Makkah into the most beautiful and advanced city of the world by employing latest communication and transportation techniques,” said Prince Khaled.

The prince was speaking at an annual meeting that discussed the execution of a strategy for the development of the region at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah on Thursday.

“As you know, the Makkah region and its people have launched a strategy — unprecedented in its nature — to develop the region. I have been honored to be entrusted with the task of serving the Makkah region after getting royal approval,” he said.

“I undertook the task of devising a strategy with people’s cooperation to develop Makkah on the basis of the government’s five-year plan,” he added.

The prince noted with satisfaction that many issues affecting Jeddah, such as water shortage, garbage problem, unplanned housing and congestion at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport have been solved.

“I remember, when I took charge as the governor of the province, people used to say water was the most serious issue. Now the issue has been tackled successfully with the introduction of two floating desalination plants and the commissioning of the Al-Shuaiba desalination project, which supplies water to Makkah, Jeddah and Taif,” Prince Khaled said.

The problem of environmental pollution caused by frequent fires at garbage dumping centers has been solved with proper monitoring of such locations and the adoption of safety measures. Another major issue was congestion at King Abdul Aziz International Airport, particularly during the peak season. “That problem has also been solved to a great extent and would be solved for good with the completion of the airport expansion project in 2012,” the governor said.

Another problem in the region is the presence of illegal people, said the governor, adding that several steps are being taken to overcome it.

“It would be a great achievement if the problem is solved as such issues remain unresolved in most countries,” he said. “This is not a problem faced by Saudi Arabia alone. Other countries also face similar problems and they have not found solutions to it,” he said.

In his speech, Prince Khaled also disclosed his intention to set up a management academy to train administrators and youths in administration for managing huge projects.

Smart cities in the cards, says Prince Khaled

JEDDAH – The cities in Makkah Region will be converted into smart cities fully equipped with the latest available modern technologies, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah Region, said here on Sunday.
Talking to Okaz after a tour of Khozam Project in the city, Prince Khaled reiterated that the public and private sector should work hand-in-hand in the development projects of the Kingdom.
King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has been repeatedly advocating cooperation between the public and the private sector in all the developmental projects across the Kingdom, the Emir said.
The said cooperation, Prince Khaled said, has already been proved beneficial and he cited the project for development and treatment of unplanned districts in Makkah Province. The participation of the two sectors is the pillar of this development, the Emir said.
He added that they were now at the first stage of the start of developing unplanned districts in Jeddah and the Executive Committee overseeing the project meets periodically to follow up work progress.
The project covers four unplanned districts – Al-Balad, Al-Sabeel, Qasr Khuzam Area and Al-Nuzla.
“When the project starts and can be seen by citizens they would realize how these unplanned districts have been converted into modern areas fully equipped with all the sophisticated technology providing a decent life for the citizens in the region.
Prince Khaled said the citizens would realize the importance of this project which has socio-economic and cultural aspects. It will achieve a qualitative change for the man in Jeddah city. “Residents of these districts would find themselves shifting from areas totally isolated from man’s needs in this age to modern constructions in districts fully equipped with the required infrastructure, schools, hospitals, parks and all the other modern means,” he said.
“I believe the coming ten years would witness a big qualitative change in the region and achieve everybody’s dreams in living in districts making them feel they are living in the first world,” he said.
Prince Khaled said residential buildings are being rehabilitated by the companies executing the development projects and the citizens of these districts will shift to them.
Prince Khaled made an inspection tour of the site for the Qasr Khozam Unplanned Districts Development Project. Work in removing the debris and preparing the land for developing the infrastructure began on March 16.
Prince Khaled who is also Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Development of Unplanned Districts in Makkah Region presided over the project’s executive committee meeting.
The meeting dealt with the mechanism for compensating the Saudi real estate owners whose properties come within the development projects for unplanned districts, those not possessing title deeds, the program for supporting those whose compensation is insufficient to own an alternative residence in the Qasr Khozam Area Development Project, the mechanism for compensating real estate owners from the rent income and the conditions that must be fulfilled by the beneficiaries.
He stressed the state’s keenness to solve all the social aspects and remove all the obstacles hindering execution of the project through the compensation mechanism that serves everybody’s interests and safeguards their rights.

Are you sure?

I do not think so.

To complete all housings or hotels for pilgrims, meaning still need 10 to 20 years more. And many things will change within this period.

Also consider this: the more rooms they provide the more they will increase the numbers of pilgrims to enter.
Let us say that they just allow 2 million pilgrims right now, perhaps someday they will allow 5 millions pilgrims. In other words, there will be never enough rooms supply and the price will always high.

Great close-ups (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=48189473&postcount=3552), abumuhannadh! So construction has switched from concrete only to steel with concrete core. That overhanging transition is remarkable, especially those boxes on both sides. Further up, some beams already indicate the next jut of the facade. And the core could've reached the highest regular floors IMO, before the "clock tier" commences.

Perhaps because his building will get more attention and eyes of the people than the mesjid?

I rather like the building ... up-close pictures reveal lovely decorations and "middle-eastern style" ornamentation. The ground floor has an elegant colonnade that is very attractive. However, in my opinion, the city of Mecca itself looks (from the photos) to be a rather ugly city as far as cities go. Lots of white boxes clustered on dry gray hills.

I'm not a Muslim so I can't appreciate the building for religious reasons...but just architecturally, it's kinda blah. It's just some big towers with some hints of Islamic architecture slapped on. There's nothing really inventive about it.

Also, the gigantic clock and really the whole crown is one of the tackiest things I've ever seen on a skyscraper. It's so huge it just has no proportionality with the rest of the building.

The only thing I find interesting about it is the sheer size. It's absolutely massive. It's shocking to think that just the lobby portion is large enough to contain the Big Ben. Can you imagine what the evacuation plans are for a building that size?

BTW, anyone know how on Earth they're going to construct the spire? I assume they'll just lift something up like the Burj Dubai spire, or the Chrysler Building spire.

This tower really represents what's bad about modern Middle Eastern architecture. It's all very nouveau riche - all money and no style.

Flaunting money about by building taller, cladding with gold, quasi Islamic designs - it's just tacky. The Middle East deserves better.

The Abraj Al-Bait is just hideous. If I were a Muslim, I'd be very angry that this gigantic monster was being built next to one of my religion's holiest sites. It's like building the 'New York, New York' Casino in Las Vegas beside the Vatican City.

Yes, it is tacky. On the other hand, most palaces build in europe are tacky and only their high age makes them classics. Moreover, we do not know if the locals appreciate this tackiness or not. Possibly they like it, so we should not judge.

Seltsam.

Things can be marvelously crafted, but still be tacky. For instance, you could carve the Mona Lisa into a piece of ivory using a diamond needle and then paint it with gold and sprinkle it with ruby and emerald. It is sure a hell of work and a lot of people would call it a masterpiece of craftmenship, but it is still tacky.

Alpha1Estates launches Al-Tilal Villas Madinah and Royal Clock Tower Makkah

http://www.zawya.com/pr/images/RoyalClockTowerMakkah_2010_01_06.jpg

06 January 2010
Global Islamic real estate consultancy Alpha1Estates International said today it is launching Al-Tilal Villas Project in Madinah and the Royal Clock Tower in Abraj al-Bait in Makkah, allowing Muslims from all over the world to purchase property there.

The company, which launched to global acclaim on January 1 2006, said that the two projects demonstrate the strength of the real estate projects in the Holy Cities, set to be further developed over the next decade.

Alpha1Estates International is delighted to be working with the most reputable developers in the Middle East to allow Muslims to buy property in Makkah and Madinah,' said Mr Al-Alawi, Chairman of Alpha1Estates International. "By virtue of their unique nature, property in these projects is guaranteed by virtue of their unique nature to appreciate in the medium to long-term.'

Al-Tilal Villas in Madinah allows Muslims from all over the world to purchase permanent villa homes nearly 10 kilometres from the Prophet's Mosque. The Royal Clock Tower is the central tower in the Abraj al-Bait Project, 50 metres opposite the Grand Mosque in Makkah, which allows Muslims to buy apartments on 24-year leases as part of a government-based religious endowment.

Alpha1Estates International launched in 2006 to become the world's first company to market Saudi property globally and also the first company to market property in both Makkah and Madinah, with its projects ZamZam Tower, Makkah, Abraj al-Bait, Makkah, Hajar Tower, Makkah and Taiba Eastern Tower, Madinah all centrally located near the two Holy Mosques. In subsequent years, it has launched the world's first bespoke real estate consultancy programme and joint-investment fund focused on the Holy Cities.

In January 2010, the company launches the Ihsan al-Haramain Index, the first index to solely track Saudi-listed companies involved in real estate development in Makkah and Madinah.

"The Ihsan al-Haramain Index rose by over three percent this year, despite the global financial crisis affecting stock markets across the world," said Mr. Al-Alawi. "However, the stock of some major listed companies involved in real estate development in Makkah and Madinah has risen in value by over 20 percent since January 2009.'

The main reasons why Muslim real estate investors should seek to invest in the Holy Cities now, Mr. Al-Alawi said, is based on inelastic and rising global demand from the world's billion and a half-plus Muslims, supported by significant public and private sector investment in infrastructure, both for the Grand Mosques and transport to them.

Mr. Al-Alawi also said that over ten million Muslim pilgrims from 140 countries visit the Holy Cities annually for Hajj and Umrah, contributing 20 billion riyals ($5.3 billion) per year, the second-most lucrative source of the Kingdom's revenue after oil.

Real estate investment in Makkah and Madinah accounts for 40% of total real estate investments in the Kingdom, reflected in land prices in the Holy Cities being the most expensive in the world at between $70,000 and $110,000 per square metre.

The Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah have undertaken multi-billion dollar expansion and infrastructure investment programmes, the CEO added.

Air transport to the Holy Mosques is also being boosted with the expansion of the Jeddah International Airport for Makkah and the Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, whilst ground transport is being transformed with the creation of the Makkah-Madinah Railway Link, set to be operational by November 2010.

Mr. Al-Alawi also said that the general macro-view of Saudi Arabia's real estate market remains strongly favourable, for residential, commercial and investment purposes.

"Demand for domestic housing, major real estate projects and a growing hospitality sector make the kingdom an attractive destination for global real estate investors," the CEO said. "The mortgage law for the Kingdom, which has been on the table for some years now, could finally come into force in 2010, supported by a renewed focus on middle-income housing.'

In the commercial real estate sector, Saudi Arabia was also the most attractive destination for retailers, with nearly 40 companies entering the kingdom in the past year, ahead of more than 60 countries around the world, Mr. Alawi added.

2009 CE/ 1430 AH has been an immensely successful year for Alpha1Estates International, Mr. Al-'Alawi said, with the company's reputation in the Middle East and globally enhancing. During the past year, the management of Alpha1Estates International have met royalty, statesmen, government ministers and chief executive officers from across the world.

Another major achievement for Alpha1Estates has been that in its role as the world's first real estate consultancy to be featured on YouTube.com, the company has now passed the 200,000 views mark on the video-sharing website. Nearly half of the viewers on the website channel have seen 'The VIP Experience: Dubai from the Sky', which features the first aerial footage of The World islands after their completion, The Atlantis Hotel on The Palm Jumeirah Island and Burj Khalifa (then the Burj Dubai) as the world's tallest building after it had exceeded 600 metres. Burj Khalifa, once called the Burj Dubai, is the world's tallest man-made structure at 828 metres and opened officially on 4 January 2010, with Alpha1Estates International's management in attendance.

Alpha1Estates International in 2010 also launched itself on premier social networking websites, Facebook, Twitter and Muxlim.

From http://www.traveldailynews.com/pages/show_page/35131--Fairmont-Hotels-&-Resorts-to-open-seven-new-hotels-in-2010

Makkah Clock Royal Tower, A Fairmont Hotel in Saudi Arabia, will be the focal point of the iconic Abraj Al Bait Complex, which includes seven towers and is adjacent to the Masjid al Haram, the holiest site in Islam. The 858-room hotel will offer Fairmont Gold, the brand’s exclusive lifestyle product offering, numerous dining outlets and conference facilities. The 76-storey hotel tower, at 577 meters (1893 ft.) high, will be among the world’s tallest and features a 40-meter (130 ft.) clock, more than five times larger than Big Ben in London, which will announce daily prayers to the Muslim world. A Lunar Observation Center and an Islamic Museum will add to the fascination of this one-of-a-kind property. Opening Q3 2010.

So, by the end of the year Dubai will loose the world record for the tallest hotel in the world. It hold it than nearly eleven years. I don't think Dubai will ever built a hotel tower which exceeds 595m.

All of Makkah City is counted as Haram. You get the same Thawab for praying anywhere in Makkah, some scholars say. Sometimes it can get crowded during Hajj, Ramadan, EID, or other times, and people can pray there. It still counts as the Mosque.

It's haram (an islam word for naughty)

It's forbidden for a women to be alone or show her to a men that aint her husband.

Everywere, in cars, restaurants, busses, on the streets and also for hotel rooms in Mecca.

A big problem for example is that women are forbidden to drive, and forbidden to take cab ( cause all cabdrivers are men).
