I think Saudi Arabia will slowly allow more Hajj and Umrah grants because of the developments in Makkah, especially the expansion and the shamiya area, but the accommodation i think is still a problem in Makkah... more Abraj Al-Bait's will be needed but this time they should be built away from the haram area...

It saddens me to see these buildings being erected next to the Holy Ka'abat. The origin of the Islamic rule in this is that no building should be allowed to over-shadow or rise in height above the Holy House. A Muslem should be able to spot the Holy Ka'akat from anywhere in the Holy City. But I am not surprized since this was a Prophecy told by the holy prophet Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him.

have you ever been to Makkah?? the Kaaba is in the bottom of a valley, there is no way Kaaba would be seen from anywhere on Makkah even if Kaaba should be the only standing structure on the face of Makkah.
and even a one storey building just outside the Grand Mosque is higher then the Kaaba, because Kaaba is in a valley.

I have been to Makkah. I fail to see how something in a valley could not be seen from surrounding areas. I liked one of the comments that said to build gardens around with lots of shade and water. I ask you if you know what these two evil looking ugly towers mean to occultic societies who are hoping in their dumb brains to "channel Allah's powers" through this trashy bohemian occultic evil --New Yorkan-- design type abomination. If the house of Saud is an "Islamic family" then why don't they enforce Allah's law in this regard? At least why not poll Moslems all around the world if they don't want Allah? Why do they act like they own that place? They don't! This will call for a revolution. They have no authority whatsoever to tamper with this Holy Place like this. I think they are asking for it...

Who is building this pile of trash, I ask? Do you know the Islamic rule about building in Holy Makkah before you question my opinion? I wonder why Arabia is all of a sudden attacked by a slew of ugly high rise or sky scraper buildings? The desert is vast yet those characterless IDless identityless money loaded idiots--for Arabs always--opted to follow the steps of the Western World! People in New York for example had to go vertically when building because simply there is no space to go horizontally in New York! These idiots have this vast desert land yet they went vertically. This is simply because it is not their own decision. But I wonder who's is it? Perhaps when we compare the design of these ugly boxes to others in other places in the world, we'll soon find the answer...

Most buildings around Al-Haram are taller than the Ka'ba. The structure that was built around the Ka'ba to accommodate worshipers is taller than the Ka'ba (The current image of the Haram). The minarets that surround it are even taller.

see diagram-
12floors in podium
hotel-first section-33 floors, 2nd section-25floors
royal suites-8floors

there is also 5 or so more observation levsls above this.

Yup. Abraj Al-Bait represent gluttony, flamboyancy, materialism, and greed. That will overshadow, or at the very least conflict with, the humility and spirituality of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam.

I'm still impressed with it as a building, but not very fond of its proximity to the Masjid.

Just look at how they're advertising it. "Its construction cost is the equivalent of the GDP of this many countries"; "its total surface area is the equivalent of this many football fields.";"it has this many chocolate rooms."; "it uses this much gold.". What happened to humility and modesty?

Al-Masjid Al-Haraam is a place where the rich and poor are indistinguishable. Where we all pray side by side, where we circle the Ka'ba side by side. This project contradicts that.

I feel the same. I would have preferred it in a receded position relative to the grand mosque. 200-300 meters away, still part of that city center, but not towering over the Kaaba.

I like the idea though. Without any big buildings on the back side of the tower it is in my opinion a too big difference in height to the buildings behind. Ŧ

http://img103.herosh.com/2010/07/16/184311590.jpg (http://www.herosh.com)

Relax dude, it's just an opinion. I don't know why people get so worked up about the criticisms of this building.

I mean, it's not like it itself is a holy place of worship or anything!

Yes, racism is an opinion. Just to get this clear, you weren't criticising the building, you were criticising the religion, and rather clumsily I may add:

Truly an oppressive and overbearing structure...somehow, I think it fits the holiest city of Islam perfectly.

Facts are facts. Are you trying to tell me that this complex isn't overbearing in how it dominates the whole city?

And seriously, what does anything I said have to with race? Or is this another case of the boy who cried 'racism' one too many times that the claim becomes meaningless...

may be he bolded the wrong sentence. that sentence doesn't bother me, for one. but the second sentence is something to ponder. anyway, this thread is famous for going off topic ten times a week. can we stop this and concentrate on the building rather then commenting with sentences like...
...somehow, I think it fits the holiest city of Islam perfectly...
after saying it is...
...Truly an oppressive and overbearing structure..

it must be close to being the second tallest building in the world now, does anybody know when it will be?

This post (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=60461055&postcount=4659) theorizes that the current height is 482-485m. The second tallest buildings are Taipei 101 at 508m (by highest architechtural detail), Shanghai World Financial Center at 487.4m (by roof height) or Sears Tower at 527.3m (by highest point overall). Since the last one doesn't count officially, you may take your pick between the first two. If you decide to go by roof height, Abraj Al-Bait have almost overtaken the Shanghai WFC, so in that category it could almost be counted as second tallest in the world. If you go by architectural detail - which would make more sense since Abraj Al-Bait have a spire like Taipei 101 - it still has 20-25 meters to go. At the current rate of growth that should be done in no time.

After many tests at night and testing of different colors by the manufacturer, they found that green and white colors together are the most visible colors at night. that is all

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but do the clock and spire appear out of scale to anyone else but me? I realize the need to increase visibility of the clock face from the ground, but that only begs the question about the functionality. The spire, meanwhile, feels very brutish compared to the tower as a whole.

My other lament about the design is the clustering of structures surrounding the main tower. While perhaps vital to the economics of the development overall I regret their intrusion on the view of (and, presumably, from) the main tower. It's to me as if the whole development is not greater than the sum of its parts.

On the positive I appreciate the detailing I'm seeing the actual construct as opposed to the renderings. A nice balance between classical skyscraper form and the nuances of local art and design. I think the green of the clock would be quite appealing, as well, both for cultural ties and softening the glow of such a large surface. Anxious to see the finished product there.

Cheers.

If you look at the renders, the east clock doesn't look round.
It looks elliptical, with the width diameter is smaller than the height.
Maybe the scale is off, but the east height is greater and the width is
less than the north face.

Hey CULWULLA, in your diagram, the top of the spire is off centre.
Were they drunk when they designed it? lol

PS great diagrams as usual, we all love them.

Looks to me like someone messed up the image resizing, the whole thing looks stretched. So i think it's gonna be just as rectangular and the clock face just as round as the west side.

At the very least I hope it's an incredibly shiny material so that the building stands out even more from its surroundings :)

All we know is that it is covered with Italian mosaic titles, 13,000 of which are made from real gold + 700,000 LED lights will also be integrated into the composite cladding to light up the clock face by night.

Are you joking? It looks vile, out of proportion, an absolute gimmick. Big gold clock? It seems to be a celebration of money and not a celebration of architecture at all. It's textbook bad taste, so hardly something to be proud of.

Not really. Shanghai Tower is only like 1830~ft. to the roof. 2073ft. is to the spire. Of all the new megatalls coming up, I think that the most "real" roof height would be Golden Finnance 117 in Tianjin which rises 1959ft. and has a sort of atrium in the top. But even that cheats a little. :|
They all cheat, think about it,
Pingan IFC: big spire
Shanghai tower: spire incorporated into the building design
Abraj al Bait Towers: big spire and crescent
China 117: rooftop crown
Barwa Tower: huge crown incorporated in the building
Dynamix Balwas Tower: huge spire
1 World Trade Center: huge spire
Pentominium: small crown/spire
Qatar National Bank Headquarters: rooftop spire
Federation Towers: enormous spire
That pretty much covers all u/c megatalls in the world, and in truth they all cheat somewhat. ;)

i know what you mean, but as Eastern37 correctly stated, ST will have an integrated crown which will appear to be a full part of the building. of course many towers "cheat" their way up, but on the other side there are perfectly good examples of real height:

- ICC, HK

- west tower, guangzhou
- china WTC III, beijing

Why burj dubai thread is sticky? because it is the world's tallest building.

Why abraj al bait should be sticky? because:

1- it has the biggest clock in the world.
2- it is the largest building in the world.
3- it is the second tallest building in the world.

I believe it is unique also and one more thing. it will be completed in few months so it deserves to be checked regulary. Guys, we will not see such clock or biggesr one before 10 years at least. Our world is not building such clock every few years. IT IS UNIQUE
