Why is it that the thread title says "Endowment" btw?

Is the building donated by the mighty Abdullah himself or what? :?

I know this isn't the place to ask, but it always puzzled me how they keep non-Muslims away? Is there some kind of certificate that exists?

I've been trolling this thread for quite some time, and the speed of the construction seems unreal! That observation deck will be the highest in the world won't it?

it is called Endowment because all the money from it will go to the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah.

a certificate that confirms that you are muslim will suffice. but they don't check everyone, just randomly.

and yes, that observation deck will be highest.

i always thought there was like an ancient wall around the city and like toll booths to get into the city and check for non muslims, sorry for slightly off topic. and also can the top of this be seen from outside of the muslim only area? and one last thing, is there going to be an observation deck inside the spire area, above the clock

There are hills around Mecca, you could probably find one in the free-for-all area and see this building with binoculars, if you were so inclined.

yes, it can be easily seen from outside the prohibited area, but you need a binocular to see any detail. and climbing a hill will show more of it.

and yes, there will be an observation deck above the clock and just below the crescent.

A couple new articles on this project. Please don't shoot the messenger - I'm simply sharing the articles.

Yale Daily News - Neglecting the past we’ve built (http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2011/jan/21/kemper-neglecting-the-past-weve-built/)
Here is an excerpt:
But first, what constitutes ugly? I would point to another building in the works: the Royal Mecca Clock Tower. Destined to rank among the world’s tallest buildings and standing in plain sight of worshippers in the Grand Mosque, its aesthetic failings are so egregious as to be almost criminal.

It is morally ugly: slated to be filled with high-end retail, high-priced hotel rooms, and higher priced condos, it mocks the piety of the worshippers below.

It is ugly in that which it replaces. A wall of soulless glass and steel will blot out mountain vistas.

But most of all, it is contextually ugly.

Illume Magazine - Luxury Architecture in Mecca: Has Hajj Lost Its Egalitarian Spirit? (http://www.illumemag.com/zine/articleDetail.php?Luxury-Architecture-in-Mecca-Has-Hajj-Lost-Its-Egalitarian-Spirit-13422)
by Arwa Aburawa, a Muslim
Here is an excerpt:
Now nearing completion, the ‘Royal Mecca Clock Tower’ which is one of the tallest buildings in the world and resembles London’s Big Ben, appears to have delivered the final blow to Mecca’s architectural dignity and the egalitarian spirit of hajj.

If they're following the "circular Makkah" plan, then yes, all the buildings in Makkah WILL be demolished, except Masjid-al-Haraam and Abraj-al-Bait. Thats what the renders suggest.

1972 feet of pure ugly. Even accounting for differing cultural standards of beauty, I can't imagine the majority of Saudis consider this attrocious hodge podge to be attractive.

This structure is best viewed from any point far enough away that the curvature of the earth hides it.

I believe there are ~22,000 hotel rooms in the complex, meaning about 40,000 people when full in the hotel rooms. As about 3,000,000 people participate in the Hajj, at most 0.73% of the people going for Hajj could stay in the hotel. From a logistics perspective, construction of such a large commercial project abut to the Kaaba may end up being a mistake considering what could have been with respect to crown management and movement.

With respect to affordability, a vast majority could not possibly afford to stay in these towers.

Meh.

Don't like it. At all.

It's like the Big Ben Clocktower on steroids, with a sauce of kitchy Vegas, on a bed of plastic religious parafernalia.

The historic Great Mosque and the Ka'aba are totally overshadowed. If I would be religious and a muslim, I would nod my head while trying to focus on the Ka'aba... which is impossible! Cause the green clock is staring down at ya.

Correct. Hence my comment about potential concern for the vast majority who need to get to and from the Kaaba in context of a large percentage of the perimeter being occupied by this wall of buildings.

sarajevocity, thanks for the link. purepaki, i've had a look at sarajevo's link and I don't really understand any of it. That's ok though, it was just idle curiousity on my part, I don't really understand any form of religious worship.
Sorry for sidetracking the thread. As for the back clockface, I thought the crane on that side was in the way for now.

I got an email two days ago from a group of youth organizing a protest IN FAVOR of the government inviting me to joing them, I declined but the number of attendants was quite big! Most people in KSA wouldn't want their government changed, and if something were miraculously to happen, then believe me it wouldn't be for the best, it wouldn't be the change "you" have in mind.
Ah, if only we could live in a world where ignorant people don't stick their noses where they don't belong.

The Mosque next to the building is and will always be the central focal point for Muslims - i can understand why people of other faiths will see the building as the centre peace, however I think the building will bring some benefits like

*Tall buildings will naturally attract wind flow around the building - so it could encourage fresh winds and lower the temperature for pilgrims
*Also provide valuable shade for pilgrims
*A Beacon for anyone travelling to Mecca knowing which direction the Qibla is - by using the building as a reference point
*Aesthetical landmark - bringing the surrounding areas up to modern standards
*Make life easier for pilgrims by not having too far to travel - although i suspect it will be well off pilgrims

I am sure that when other buildings around the Harram area are demolished and bought up[ to modern standards - the city will be state of the art for pilgrims and residents

Mecca looks amazing now – it will look more amazing in the next 10-15 years!
I hope they increase the height to over 610 meters as the building will be in the 2000ft club where only a few buildings currently built and under construction are in that club

The Crown is being done at a height that hasn't been reached on a construction project very many times before. And this crown is more complex than anything that's ever been built at this height.
So the time that it is taking is very understandable.

Yes, that is understandable. I primarily just wondered if anyone knows when they project completion of the crown.

Considering the extreme complexity of the entire design and the intricate detailing of the facade, I wouldn't call this structure boring, ugly, or disgusting.

Maybe a bit overbearing the way it towers over the mosque. It does make the mosque look kind of puny now. I just hope they don't completely surround the mosque with other really tall towers.

Abraj Al Bait Towers

The Abraj Al-Bait Towers also known as the "Makkah Royal Clock Hotel Tower" is a complex under construction in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The building holds and will prevail several world records in the construction world, preferably: the tallest hotel in the world, constructed with the tallest clock tower in the world and displaying the world's largest clock faces,[1] the world's largest building floor area, and will become the second tallest building in the world upon completion in 2011 (Dubai's Burj Khalifa being the holder). The building complex is meters away from the world's largest mosque and Islam's most sacred site, the Masjid al Haram.

Upon completion, the tallest tower in the complex would stand as the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, and the tallest and largest hotel in the world, with a planned height of 610 metres (2,000 feet). It is recently the second tallest building under construction. Upon completion, the structure would have the largest floor area of any structure in the world with 1,500,000 m2 (16,150,000 sq ft) of floorspace.

This is the same as Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, in the United Arab Emirates which is also under construction. It will also surpass the Emirates Park Towers in Dubai as the world's tallest hotel.

The entire project is estimated to be completed in the autumn of 2011.

Yep, you're wrong. The fourth clock will be built soon.

I assume "soon" could be a rather long time. From the current crane positioning I believe they will finish the crown first and then will install the final clock when no crane is in the way anymore. And who knows when the crone will be done.

Btw the tower on the left side (if you look at the complex from the Kaaba) has made barely any progress in terms of the cladding even though it has topped out quite some time now. Whats going on there?

600 construction workers strike in Makkah

By BADEA ABU AL-NAJA | ARAB NEWS

Published: Feb 21, 2011 00:48 Updated: Feb 21, 2011 00:48

MAKKAH: Police dispersed Sunday morning more than 600 striking workers belonging to a major construction company in Makkah’s central area.

The workers of the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Project and the Grand Mosque’s northern courtyard expansion project were protesting nonpayment of their salaries and other legitimate grievances.

Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Mayman, spokesman of Makkah police, said the workers peacefully assembled in the Grand Mosque’s courtyard to press their demands and were not causing any disturbances.

Al-Mayman added that sufficient numbers of troops were sent to the location as a precautionary measure.

Police also sent representatives of the contracting company and workers to the Labor Office to settle their disputes.
