that's true and even on IDs religious affiliation isn't stated. the only way of knowing is through checking one's name or nationality and these aren't solid grounds for verification anyway so you can always pretend ur a convert :P

Actually any human being is allowed in Vatican City, there are no rules as to who can go in based on religion, as long as you don't wear shorts you can come. Vatican isn't a specific holy site though, there are no Catholic holy sites that one must visit, the whole world is holy.

Because the crane that's currently attached to the clock's place is needed for completion of the spire, so before the spire is done the crane is not going anywhere, so there'll be no clock until then.

Apr 27, 2011

Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) has celebrated its fifth anniversary by hosting a company function around the test construction of the Dokaae Tower’s 23m composite Hilal, which will be placed on top of the largest clock tower in the world in Makkah.

The Dokaae development comprises seven high-rise towers overlooking the Holy Mosque. The towers all have distinct design themes, and their heights follow a grading pattern providing a maximum number of direct views of the Holy Mosque. At peak times, the complex is able to accommodate 65,000 guests and visitors.

PCT has supplied the uppermost 370m of the 601m clock tower, a construction that involves over 60,000m2 of composite cladding. This includes the four epoxy glass fibre clock faces, two of which measure 43m in diameter, as well as the 23m carbon clock hands and the 23m self-supporting carbon Hilal.

How are they going to lift every one of the 10 part crecent up to the top? helicopter?

Same way they lifted the clocks, crane. If they weren't going to lift it via spire crane, it would've been removed by now

Lots of progress on the removal of the "annoying building" :)

Thanks for the great updates!!

But i realized something...

Now that the "annoying building" is removed, the tower has been scarred for ever, you know why ? because the main entrance was built in a position that it wouldnt be in front of the "annoying building" now that its gone, the entrance is way to the left instead of being symmetrical and in a "correct" position in relation to the main tower....

thats not true, the entrance is built so that it is symmetrical to the clock tower. thats why it is on one side,
it has nothing to do with the "Annoying Building".

you can almost see it in this picture below, you can see that the clock tower isn't actually facing the middle of the two towers infront.

FORMAX gears up for growth in multiaxials

http://www.reinforcedplastics.com/_virtual/article-images/IMG_4980_1_2_small.jpg
FORMAX worked with Premier Composite Technologies to create the hands for the clock of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca,
the world's largest clock tower. The clock hands are 22 m and 17 m in length and are made out of carbon prepreg. They weigh 6 tonnes each.

28 April 2011

Diverse applications

Wessely points out the diverse range of applications the company has been involved in. These range from developing quadaxial fabrics for use in Lamborghini's new carbon composite supercar, to supplying materials for the Dokaae Tower in Mecca – the work's largest clock tower.

On the Dokaae Tower project FORMAX worked with Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) of Dubai to produce the clock hands using carbon prepreg. The clock hands had to be be hollow to allow access to the 2000 LEDS embedded into their surface. They were therefore designed as sandwich structures, featuring an outer layer of prepregged glass cloth, a structural laminate of unidirectional (UD) carbon prepreg and secondary reinforcements using FORMAX carbon biaxial fabrics.

FORMAX materials will also be used in the tower's hilal (cresent moon) structure which will measure 23 m. Working with PCT and Gurit UK, FORMAX developed a custom hybrid quadraxial fabric for this, which uses a blend of carbon and glass fibres.

PCT is currently constructing the 23 m composite hilal (crescent moon),
which will be placed on the top of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca – the largest clock tower in the world.
29 April 2011

Dubai based composite structures supplier Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) is celebrating five years in business.

PCT was founded in 2006 by a team of three people, including managing director Hannes Waimer, to serve the architectural and marine markets in the Middle East.

Today, the company has grown to over 670 people. It works a number of European architects, including SL Rasch, Snohetta and Foster + Partners, and has evolved into the building of production race boats, including the FARR 400.

PCT is currently involving in the construction of the Dokaae Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

This the largest clock tower in the world and PCT has supplied the upper 370 m of the 601 m tower, a construction that involves over 60 000 m2 of composite cladding. This includes the four glass fibre epoxy clock faces, two of which measure 43 m in diameter, as well as the 23 m carbon clock hands and the 23 m self-supporting carbon hilal.

They said it has been divided into 10 parts

I posted before: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=76774371&postcount=7828

By the looks of it, I think it'll only be 3 parts, base and both corners, or 4 parts, 2 pieces of base and two corners.

^^ I may be wrong, but the number of 10 comes from the newspaper article, contrary to somebodys pure speculation. And the tapes stripes seems to suggest the same after closer investigation (I first thought it will be 4 parts too). I'm not sure if I'm 100% right about corners and maybe bottom parts, but I'm quite confident there will be more than 4 parts. Just imagine moving one of those 4 parts with a truck. I think it would have problem fitting in the street line

So it seems I was quite correct. Now its clear we have at least 5 parts. From the picture above we can be quite sure middle parts can be divided giving another two parts. I dont think top parts and bottom can be divided so that would be 7 parts total.

In many ways, Abraj Al-Bait looks mediaeval, reactionary like a cross between Disneyland, Las Vegas and the worst of NYC's Art Deco kitschy excesses.
So pharaonic, so ostentatious and pompously overhelming.
From what I can see Abraj does not personally appeal to me. But then nothing can replace the real view from the ground, in other words one needs to go there and see this huge building 'live' and not relly on photos and then just 'pontificate'. (And on the top of that I guess I am not a Muslim to have the right to a say)

I guess you just don't know what "topped out" means.

I think of the hilal as a decoration, thats why I think Clock tower is T/O

I'm also a caucasian atheist male. I don't want to drift off topic but I can understand why I wouldn't be welcome at the holy site nearby but this building isn't really a religious place, it just happens to be next to one. So are westerners not even allowed to be in this area at all? I think it would be an interesting thing to see in person so I'm just curious. Thanks.

I can't say that I'm a fan of this tower but it certianly is intriguing. IMO, it belongs in the same category as Ryugyong, both are just unbelievably surreal.

Really? So Burj Khalifa was, according to your definition, topped out over 200 metres before it actually was, as the spire is a decorative feature. No, topping out means reaching full architectural height, and AAB is not topped out yet. Close, but not yet.

How many times do I have to tell you, it's ALREADY topped out, only hilal remains

topped out = when it has reached it's final height NOW !! (601m)

Hi all.

A structure is topped out when it reaches what will be called its architectural top. For this project the crescent is not removable so it will be included in the height to architectural top measure and therefore will have to be erected before the project is officially topped out. That will be at 601 meters as per the plans but that could change when officially ratified by the CTBUH, as happens with many projects.

Also for this project the height to architectural top and the height to tip will be the same as there are no masts or flagpole or lightning rod on top of the crescent - is that correct ?

London Clock's diameter is 23feet, while a hand in the Makkah Clock is 10 feet wide (not length), means, two hands adjacent to one another put over London Clock, it will almost cover the whole face of it.

why do they say it is more than just five times the big ben clock? may be the diameter is, but then it means it is more than 25 times the size of big ben clock as it is clear in this scale image.

Of course people are going to compare massive clock towers. Clock faces are the defining characteristic of both towers in question.

I think most of the original mentions were in context of a blend of several existing structures. The UK Parliament, Moscow State University, the Ryugyong Hotel, Las Vegas, and Jaba the Hut from a massing and large clock face perspective.

^^ Yes, that's brilliant, Roukaya19!

Photo must be from previous weekend, I suppose. In Europe, we don't have that moon position with the crescent facing right downwards.

Do you have another picture from that evening? A pic done later, with the moon connected to Abraj Al-Bait's top would be perfect... maybe taken from double distance with zoom, so that that the "substitute" would have the right size. :)

Is it ill will or ignorance Aswali? Why do you post an outdated, irrelevant shot of Ryugyong Hotel when it is well known that currently, the building looks totally different to what you try to imply it does. Here is how it looked in April 2011. It is quite a shame that some people want to manipulate reality in order to prove their point!

And the height, can we say it's about 15 meters, less or more?
