luci203 August 11th, 2011, 09:15 PM The green fluo lights at night make it look so cheap !
The green light is the most visible at night for the human eye when it comme to spot the diferences.
That's why night vision devices use shades of green. (even if red light we can spot it from a greater distance, green light is better to read, see time, or to distinguish different shapes.

segwaert August 15th, 2011, 07:34 PM impressive clocktower. i hope this complex will be accompanied by more supertals in the near future. those old houses near the mosque don’t seem so valuable, so they could be demolished. are there any plans to make the mosque itself bigger? it would be cool if they construct so towering minarets, like the one in casablanca
droneriot August 15th, 2011, 07:35 PM The mosque is being expanded as we speak.

It would be cool if they write "رمضان كريم" or "كل عام وانتم بخير" or "عيد سعيد" on the banner ^_^. I'd do it myself but I just can't find out whats the font they used, I've tried "Thulth" but its not quite same.

A general view of the Grand Mosque in Makkah

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah will lay the foundation stone for a new expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah on Friday, it was announced on Tuesday.
The new project, covering 400,000 square meters, will create prayer space for an additional 1.2 million worshippers.
“The new project, named the King Abdullah Expansion, will be carried out using the most advanced mechanical and electrical systems,” said Muhammad Al-Khozaim, vice president of the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques Affairs. “Once completed, the new facility will be able to accommodate nearly 1.2 million worshippers,” he said.
The new expansion will also have basic facilities including modern garbage disposal systems and security monitoring systems. Sunshades will also be established on the northern courtyards of the mosque. The new annex will be linked with the existing mosque and masaa with a series of bridges. It will also provided with air conditioning systems and electric stairs.
Al-Khozaim disclosed plans to expand the mataf (the circumambulation areas around the Holy Kaaba) and provide air-conditioning for all parts of the Grand Mosque, adding that the two projects would be carried out shortly along with the new Haram expansion project.
Speaking about other projects implemented at the directives of King Abdullah, he said the newly expanded masaa (the running course between Safa and Marwa) could now accommodate 118,000 pilgrims per hour instead of 44,000.
He described the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Towers as one of the largest real estate projects in Makkah. It comprises six residential towers and a five-star hotel. The frontal towers are 28 stories high while the rear ones are 35 stories. Side towers are 45 stories while the hotel tower is 60 stories. The entire complex with 11,000 rooms and suites can accommodate 35,000 pilgrims.
Al-Khozaim commended the king for taking the initiative to implement a number of vital projects for the welfare of pilgrims. They include the Mashair Railway connecting Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah, the Haramain Railway to link the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, the Jamrat bridge complex, the Central Zone Development project, the King Abdul Aziz Road, new ring roads in addition to flood drainage projects in the holy sites.
The Jamrat Bridge project, which was carried out at a cost of SR4.5 billion, was instrumental in preventing stampedes during the stoning ritual. It is designed to accommodate 5 million pilgrims. The Mashair Railway will become fully operational before the upcoming Haj in November. The metro service will operate 17 trains with 12 coaches in each train. A train will carry 3,000 pilgrims.

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah arrived in Makkah on Wednesday night to spend the remaining days of Ramadan in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque and lay the foundation stone for the largest Haram expansion project in history.
King Abdullah was greeted on arrival at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah by senior princes and officials including Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Supreme Judiciary Council Chairman Saleh bin Humaid, and Saleh Al-Hosain, head of the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques (PTHM).
Muhammad Al-Khozaim, vice president of PTHM, said the new expansion to be launched by King Abdullah on Friday would increase the Grand Mosque's capacity by nearly 1.2 million worshippers. The new project covers 400,000 square meters in the northwest and northeast of the mosque. Real estate properties appropriated for the project are valued at more than SR40 billion.
King Abdullah ordered the new expansion to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims who come from different parts of the world. During the peak days of Ramadan, thousands of worshippers stand in the courtyards and streets around the mosque for taraweeh and qiyamullail prayers.
Al-Khozaim disclosed plans to expand the mataf (the circumambulation areas around the Holy Kaaba) and provide air-conditioning for all parts of the Grand Mosque, adding that the two schemes would be carried out shortly along with the new Haram expansion project.
Abdullah Al-Asheikh, chairman of the Shoura Council, said the latest expansion would herald a new era in the history of the Grand Mosque. He commended the king's special care for the two holy mosques, adding that Muslims all over the world admire the royal gesture.
Al-Asheikh described the King Abdul Aziz residential towers as the largest endowment project whose revenues would be used for the development of the Grand Mosque. He also noted the initiative taken by the king to expand the masaa (the pathway between Safa and Marwa), increasing its capacity from 44,000 to 118,000 pilgrims per hour.
A senior official at PTHM said once the new expansion is completed, the Grand Mosque would be able to accommodate more than 2 million worshippers at a time. The project has three parts: construction of a new building; expansion and development of courtyards around the mosque, including walkways, tunnels and toilets; and development of service facilities for air-conditioning, electricity and drinking water, he said.
The expansion starts from the Masjid Al-Haram Street on the east and extends to Khaled bin Walid Street on the west. It also covers Muddae, Abusufyan, Raquba and Abdullah bin Zubair streets in Shamiya as well as parts of Jabal Hindi and old districts of Harrat Al-Bab before reaching Jabal Al-Kaaba Street.
Other projects to be launched officially by the king include the Makkah Tower Clock, considered the largest in the world; the newly expanded masaa; the King Abdul Aziz endowment towers; the newly developed Jamrat Bridge complex in Mina; and the Mashair railway linking the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifa.

Abdullah opens work on Mecca mosque extension
19 August 2011
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will officially launch a $10.6-billion (7.3-billion-euro) extension project Friday for the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest city, media reports said.
The project is intended to allow the complex to accommodate some two million worshippers at a time, the daily Asharq al-Awsat said.
The site, where 10,000 workers are already working round-the-clock covers an area of 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet).
The project envisages a multi-level extension on the north side of the complex, together with stairways and tunnels to facilitate worshippers access to the mosque, built around the cubic Kaaba that all Muslims face to pray.
The Grand Mosque underwent significant expansion in the mid-1980s, but the number of Muslim pilgrims has steadily grown, requiring another expansion.
Friday evening, Abdullah also is due to officially inaugurate the 601-metre (1,983-foot) Mecca Royal Clock Tower, topped with a gigantic four-faced clock that rises from behind the hills and helps visitors at other holy sites locate the Grand Mosque.
The clock tower is the world's second tallest building -- behind the Burj Khalifa, the 828-metre (2,717-foot) skyscraper inaugurated in Dubai early last year.
Mecca, which during the annual hajj pilgrimage attracts some 2.5 million Muslims from around the world for a stay of two weeks on average, last November opened a metro service that will operate only during the hajj season.
A proposed $10-billion (7-billion-euro) high-speed train linking Jeddah to Medina via Mecca is also in the cards, with European and Asian companies locked in fierce competition for the project.

Well actually, it was the inaugration of Makkah Mean Time, the newspapers quoted it wrong.

That video really brought me down. :(

The hour Mecca unique architectural masterpiece, scoffed at her best engineering capabilities in the world to develop designs and implemented the hands of skilled craftsmen, so now the image of the current largest clock in the world, flowing prayer of fresh Riqraca net connected to the message of tolerance, serenity, and the call to worship five times a today.
For an hour Mecca privacy and excellence exceeding all previous records in the watch industry history in addition to its place next to the Haram al-Sharif, the purest spot on earth, dearest to the hearts of Muslims, and the focus of world attention at various times of the year.
Magnitude of the time, will make it to see anywhere in the Holy City, is easy and possible, in addition to being able to pass-through via Mecca to Jeddah also be seen.
Time and consists of four interfaces, have been installed on the walls of time light exits from the laser light beam issued on different occasions, such as Eid in addition to light signals the time for prayer, and the hour of an integrated system of protection against natural elements of earth, wind and rain.
The time of new and unique masterpiece of engineering and the well-designed, with each engine weighs more than 21 tons, and as such, the Mecca-hour drives are larger and heavier engines that have been made so far. The solar panels generate power to run time engines and time associated with the public electricity grid to Mecca, to supply additional power capacity.
Also, each interface of the interfaces at the four engines of its own, with a match in time between them, linked by the timing of Mecca, which takes its information from 5 high-precision atomic clocks are the main part of the Center for the timing of Mecca.
The dimensions of the one hour of Mecca a presentation at the 43 meters 43 meters high.
The height of the clock tower about 250 meters, begins construction of 350 meters high above the ground on top of the tower No. 5 of the draft King Abdul Aziz Endowment of the Two Holy Mosques, for a total height of Mecca hour to 601 meters.
Unique time and covered more than 98 million pieces of colored glass mosaics, in addition to more than two million units of the type of light to LED lighting, with coverage of 430 square meters of carbon fiber developed.
Been the development of a mixture of bronze according to the property fit the industry gears have been pouring a mixture bronze style continuous casting and then cut to the required size, is then formed roughly according to the standards the final is still at a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, and during the process of forming up machinery to measurement accuracy + / 3 - mm, and then adjust the gears with high accuracy when the parts are scaled in its final form. Are also monitoring all phases of work with electronic measurement to ensure the accuracy of manufacture of each part of the time on the unit.
And composed a series of gears gears and teeth gears bronze confrontation with a steel-reinforced specifically and in spite of their large size but the gears are Tashagaha within a string gears varying up to 0.01 mm only, and contribute to the high precision of the clutch to make the moving parts move with minimal friction.
He is both the hour hand and minute hand engines separate within the operating unit weighing more than 21 tons, making it the largest and heaviest unit running for an hour at all, and operates at four operating units, each face a separate unit to receive four units of the reference itself at the same time, which run the latest atomic system in the world.
Crescent is also located on top of the time the largest in the world with a diameter of 23 meters and the length of a thousand characters in the word "Allah Akbar" at the top at more than 23 meters.
Are calling for prayer from the top of hour Mecca by the most powerful sound system of its kind at all, and are lit during prayer 21.000 units, illuminated white, and green is used to enhance visibility throughout the area of Mecca, where it is light 24 rod is moving, and 800 bar constant.
If the building clock tower as a building of an independent was a unique achievement in terms of magnitude and the requirements of achievement, while building the clock tower from the height of 350 meters above the ground on top of the tower No. 5 of the draft King Abdul Aziz Endowment of the Two Holy Mosques, for a total rise time and the building to 601 meters, to be the second tallest building in the world, this rise has 250 professionals and technicians, and with seven tower cranes building the largest clock in the world provides a new reference to the timing in the Muslim world, "the timing of Mecca."
MysticMcGoo August 21st, 2011, 06:47 AM This whole Mecca mean time is rediculous. I wish they would just get over the idea. It's geologically impossible.
Mecca is not aligned with the North Magnetic Pole. As the geomagnetic field of the earth continuously changes the deviation of the compass needle from true north (known as the magnetic declination) also slowly changes. In the past there were epochs when the compass needle at Mecca pointed true north (and there will be future epochs when this is true again) but at the moment the line of no compass deviation is located somewhat to the southeast of Mecca. In 2012 the magnetic declination of Mecca will be 3.10° East and will continue to increase at about +0.07° per year.[6]
Nor can Mecca claim to be the "true center of the Earth", presumably meaning "located at the center of the terrestrial hemisphere containing the largest area of land". The center of the land hemispere is actually located in France, near the city of Nantes (about 4700 km from Mecca).
During the 1884 International Meridian Conference, when Greenwich was established as the initial meridian, the Ottoman Empire, at that time controlling Mecca, voted with the majority for Greenwich.[7]
The concept of Mecca Time was described as "a beautiful example of cargo cult science" by PZ Myers in reaction to the news of the building of the Mecca clock.

Mesch August 21st, 2011, 06:54 AM Still don't get it. Why the rush with the opening ceremony when the exterior is not finished yet. The crane still there, roof of anexed buildings incompleted and also the back of the tower. It's because the date is special or something?
The King was originally there to lay the foundation stone of the Holy Mosque's expansion project so I guess they thought why not get done with both since he's already there. :P
Also, as Makkawi said - they've only inaugurated the Clock tower, not the whole complex.

The engineer of clock is Martin Ryffel (Swiss)..and he is not muslim. In a article, it says:
After a successful test at Dubai, Makkah Clock has been hoisted to Mecca. But Martin Ryffel was not on the trip: "Not being a Muslim, I'm not going to Mecca," he says.

MAKKAH/RIYADH: The Grand Mosque in Makkah is filled to the brim with worshippers these days as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have come from all over the world to perform Umrah and attend taraweeh and qiyamullail prayers, seeking the blessings of Lailat Al-Qadr (night of power).
The Civil Defense department in Makkah gave Arab News a rare opportunity to take aerial photos of the Grand Mosque on the 21st night of Ramadan on Saturday sitting in their helicopter and at the initiative of Maj. Gen. Muhammad Al-Harbi, commander of aviation in the Kingdom.
The S92 model helicopter was piloted by Capt. Abdul Aziz Al-Dhufyan and 1st Lt. Ziyad Al-Otaibi.
The helicopter had come from Jeddah and was flying at a height of 4,000 feet at a speed of 80 knots.
The trip covered the central region of Makkah and the Arab News photographer was able to take shots of the whole of Makkah from various angles. The camera focused on the newly established Makkah Clock on the King Abdul Aziz Endowment Tower.
The helicopter flew over the Misfala, Kuday, Ajyad, Hafair, Hajoun and Aziziya areas that were crowded with vehicles carrying pilgrims and worshippers. The pilots gave instructions to Civil Defense ground staff based on information they had on traffic in various parts of the city.
The trip on the helicopter, which is mainly engaged in search, rescue and fire extinguishing operations and airlifting patients, took about an hour and half. The plane can carry up to 22 people.

Think about it, a man makes so much effort in shooting a video, then editing it beautifully, just to get criticized by people. thats seriously demoralizing, he must have been dishearted. As for the music, I think its best for the momentum of the video.

Roukaya19 August 23rd, 2011, 02:28 PM Roukaya19 I know its "RebasUno", I asked for his real name. He should've put copyright on that video or in the description. I always write the name of the photographer when sharing their pictures or videos.
Think about it, a man makes so much effort in shooting a video, then editing it beautifully, just to get criticized by people. thats seriously demoralizing, he must have been dishearted. As for the music, I think its best for the momentum of the video.I know it's not the real name, sorry that's the only reference I know. But he's not alone on this project so I don't know the team either. He's stupid!....putting a video on YT without knowing that everybody will download..lol. He should've at least put his name/logo/description on it, this is his fault. Now he knows YT communauty!

very old, the banner under the right clock has been completed immediately after the inauguration. But the back clock will remain unfinished for a long time.
Roukaya19 August 23rd, 2011, 05:25 PM * The author of the video of the ''Inauguration'' made a plaint on YT and now videos are delete for ''author rights''. The video with No music is deleted.
