It's weird... It looks massive among the rest of the city's buildings... and also, this complex reminds me a Las Vegas hotel somehow...

Maybe this could change in the future if planned developments mentioned above are carried out...

Is Mecca looking like Manhattan?

video report 2:41 min : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15801336

21 November 2011

It is Islam's most holy site and millions make a pilgrimage to the Grand Mosque at Mecca every year.

But Mecca is also now being compared to Manhattan with the pace of high-rise buildings that are dotting the skyline.

Luxury hotels are being built by the local authority to provide accommodation for the rich visitors that come to the city.

But some Saudi archaeologists are angry than historical sites and buildings are being destroyed to make way for them.

Ahmed Maher, from BBC Arabic Television, reports from the city.

I think Eddie is referring to some of the more recent Las Vegas architecture. In particular, there is a pseudo-New York facade (building?) that has a similar effect (but on a much smaller scale) as the Mecca building.

I'm not a Muslim, but I think the very presence of this staggeringly huge building is insulting to Islams holiest place. Fair enough, they need a massive amount of accommodation, but why not build it a bit further away? Even a kilometre out would give the Grand Mosque a bit of the breathing space it deserves. Could you imagine the outcry if they built a hotel complex this big just across the road from St Peters in Rome? I'm curious as to whether there was much opposition to this, or whether it simply HAD to go up there where it is due to necessity?

Would you see something like this next to the vatican? There should be a huge park or something like that instead of this skyscraper. It looks like Vegas came to Mecca.. Building Towers Hotel in Mecca,
more than the demand for «Cranes»

http://s.alriyadh.com/2011/11/29/img/327693790981.jpg

I've been waiting patiently for someone to say this - I hoped I wasn't alone. I mean I realise it must be added convenience, but isn't there something about the sanctity of holy sites that means you can't do this?

And where are UNESCO and such like? Probably too busy complaining about London sticking a tower, half the size of this, about a mile away from St. Paul's... Time to get a grip, eh?

I don't think the Saudi government pays much atention to UNESCO.

no offense but i don't like this kind of religious building. little bit ugly to me
In seoul there is too many church neon-sign red-cross on the top of building. It is really terrible like cemetery.
symbolic architecture is terrible.
I don't like islam/judaism/christianity/marxism/buddaism/confucianism
I hope to live without gods and god and flying spaghetti and fairy tale

I don't think the Saudi government pays much atention to UNESCO.

But I haven't heard anybody (UNESCO would be a prime choice) being outraged or kicking up ANY sort of fuss about this. I wonder if this wasn't in a Muslim country if they would do... Seems biased to me.

December 3rd, 2011, 03:29 PM
Uhm, why are you talking about UNESCO with regards to Mecca? There's no World Heritage Site anywhere near this place. The Kaaba might be holy ground but that doesn't mean it's a natural or architectural wonder.

Curious change in Mecca, irrigating these dry mountains and growing some forests there could really make a nice improvement in this dusty city :).

Has the clock tower a name like London's "Big Ben"? I'm not a muslim, but can I start a suggestion sub-topic in this thread about that? I suggest: "Big Khadijah" (طويل القامة خديجة <- is that correct?), Khadijah was the #1 wife of Mohammed.

What a huge building :O

But for me at least... is kind of weird, I mean its like a mix between the Big Ben in London with some hotel from Las Vegas, NV. In a huge scale...

Anyway, the important thing is that the people of La Mecca, likes this building (?) :).

I believe people are looking at this Structure the wrong way.

Mecca is a ancient city with old faniscinating Islamic Tradition and Buildings. This Clock reflets it's importance and it's old tradition by looking old and out of place :/

I'll admit it isn't the nicest structure out there but i'll still take a pic of it with me next to it :)

it's just hard to understand how massive this building is. it has such a wide base AND is so tall. it's just amazing and the design is extremely underrated, this building is a beauty in my eyes, a symbol of what can be done and what is yet to come in modern architecture.

You cannot even visit a single tower completely with just one man, The guys working in the crescent doesn't know the guy working in the fairmont hotel, its that hard. Also If you have some care for your guide, you wouldn't be stupid enough as this guy to show his face and bring his name, they get terminated for this, and I didn't meet this guy in my trip.

No. The real reason why the Federation Towers are not included is because the CTBUH considers the spire to be its own tower and not a building (http://buildingdb.ctbuh.org/building.php?building_id=10644). Under this assumption, Moscow's tallest "building" would be the East Tower at 360 meters.

Agreed, and this is NOT an attack against Islam, I just think it is vile and tasteless. It is only big to show off.

Though I also think it is vile and quite racist how I am not allowed in this city.

It isn't, it is an attack on bad architecture. Smooth glass cladding that doesnt overbare the city would have been magnificant.

Makkah Clock's ornament designed by Jay Bonner

http://bonner-design.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/3-Mecca-Clock-Tower.jpeg

Mecca Clock Tower (Abraj al-Bait), Mecca, Saudi Arabia

The Mecca Clock Tower is the tallest of the five high-rise towers in the Abraj al-Bait complex in Mecca, and at approximately 600 meters above ground, the second tallest building in the world. This clock tower has four faces – two that are square, and two that are rectangular – with a height of 43 meters.

Jay Bonner was contracted to design the ornament for the clock faces, and work closely with the design and engineering team responsible for this ambitious tower project. The ornamental design included floral designs in the corners of the square and rectangular faces, the dial, the floral designs on the hands, and the exterior ornament for the domical observatory that sits above one of the clock faces. The ornament throughout each face is glass mosaic tesserae with inset LED light fixtures for nocturnal illumination. The glass mosaics are set onto rigid carbon-fiber composite, and the floral design in each corner of the face is in high relief. The style of the floral ornament is in the pan-Islamic style first developed by Jay Bonner for the Sliding Domes at the Prophet’s Mosque in Median.

Contracted in 2007: scheduled for completion in 2011.

it's a HOTEL :sly:, and hotels do have shopping malls. but a shopping mall is only secondary. it's ok to hate it being too close anyway.

i have a mixed feeling about that clock tower thingy....it is tooooo close to Masjidil Haram. We come to Makkah to worship not to shop....I would rather shop at the stalls. Well if they really want to cater the people of Makkah to shop...put it somewhere else...:(

I am a Muslim and have been to Mecca and i coudnt agree more with you. This monstrosity should have never been built in the holy city. Newayz the dumbass Saudis have already destroyed almost all the significant historical places in both the holy cities of Mecca & Medina. So it aint anything new. The irony is that the so-called Saudi king calls himself as the "Guardian of the 2 holy cities" . I dont know what the heck is he guarding though.:ohno:

What I was trying to get at was :- Do all of the people in public places like the mall above, stop and pray at the designated times because they are all true believers? Or do some of them do it because they are afraid to be seen as non conformers for whatever reason? For instance is their a punishment for people who refuse to stop and pray?

Whoever stops to pray, its his.her choice, there is no religious police inside malls/shopping center. And its none of your business, stick topic or don't say anything.

I'm a bit shocked to see that combination. That giant NYC/Las Vegas combo really dwarfs the great mosque and it's hard to stomach that combination. They should have left much more free space around the mosque.
