Gurit clocks on in Saudi for world’s tallest hotel

http://www.prw.com/uploads/pictures/Makkah.jpg
The 607m tall building is partly clad in FRP from Gurit
23 January 2012

The recently inaugurated clock tower, the central tower of the Abraj-Al Arab development in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, features fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials and structural engineering composites specialist Gurit.

At 607m tall the building is the second tallest in the world. The top 200m of the tower is clad with over 40,000m² of FRP composite panels, including the largest clocks in the world – 43m in diameter, with 23m long minute hands.

The cladding of the tower top includes intricate calligraphy and ornamental patterning, finished in glass and ceramic tiles. Illumination of the clock hands, clock faces and media wall, called for over two million LEDs to be integrated into the cladding panels.

Gurit worked closely with the tower top designers, SL-Rasch (Stuttgart, Germany), to carry out the structural engineering of the composite tower top cladding, clock hands, and the 23m diameter crescent, a self-supportive FRP composite structure which is located at the top of the building.

Gurit supplied a range of composite materials to Premier Composites Technologies (Dubai, UAE), the company that carried out fabrication and installation of the cladding, clock face, clock hands and crescent. This included a new fire retardant wet laminating system from Gurit, Ampreg 21FR, which was developed for lamination of the façade.

The clock hands presented a particular challenge due to their long, slender geometry and the potential for high wind loading. The clock hands were therefore manufactured using Gurit’s WE91-2 carbon fibre prepreg material and Corecell T Foam structural core, originally developed for use in modern large wind turbine blades.

Dr Mark Hobbs, senior engineer, engineered structures at Gurit, said: “This has been a fascinating project to work on. It has presented numerous challenges, from the sheer scale and complexity of the project, to the integration of finishes and lighting into the cladding panels.”

Composites-intensive clock tower inaugurated in Saudi Arabia

http://d2n4wb9orp1vta.cloudfront.net/resources/images/cdn/cms/Makkah_clock_tower_3_web.jpg
1/30/2012

Composites specialist Gurit (Isle of Wight, U.K.) reported on Jan. 23 that the recently inaugurated Makkah clock tower, the central tower of the Abraj-Al Arab development in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, features composite materials and structural engineering from the company.

At 607m/1,991 ft tall, the building is the second tallest in the world. The top 200m/656 ft of the tower is clad with more than 40,000m²/430,556 ft2 of advanced composite panels, including the largest clocks in the world — 43m/141 ft in diameter, with 23m/75.5 ft long minute hands. The cladding of the tower top includes intricate calligraphy and ornamental patterning, finished in glass and ceramic tiles. Illumination of the clock hands, clock faces and media wall, called for over two million LEDs to be integrated into the cladding panels.

Gurit worked closely with the tower top designers, SL-Rasch (Stuttgart, Germany), to carry out the structural engineering of the composite tower top cladding, clock hands, and the 23m diameter crescent, a self-supportive composite structure located at the top of the building. Gurit supplied a range of advanced composite materials to Premier Composites Technologies (Dubai, UAE), the company that carried out fabrication and installation of the cladding, clock face, clock hands and crescent. This included a new fire-retardant, wet-laminating system from Gurit, Ampreg 21FR, which was developed for lamination of the façade. Lamination was carried out on direct CNC cut molds fabricated using Gurit’s T-Paste tooling paste on a polystyrene blank block. The easy-machining, low-cure shrinkage and high level of detail achievable with T-Paste reportedly enabled rapid production of accurate direct molds for the part production.

The clock hands presented a particular challenge due to their long slender geometry and the potential for high wind loading. The clock hands were manufactured using Gurit’s WE91-2 carbon fibre prepreg material and Corecell T foam structural core. Gurit originally developed WE91-2 and Corecell T foam for use in large wind turbine blades. The stiffness-to-weight ratio of the carbon WE91-2 prepreg combined with the mechanical properties, toughness and low resin uptake of Corecell structural core enabled the realization of a lightweight, stiff clock hand.

Mark Hobbs, senior engineer, Engineered Structures at Gurit, comments, "This has been a fascinating project to work on. It has presented numerous challenges, from the sheer scale and complexity of the project, to the integration of finishes and lighting into the cladding panels. It has been a pleasure to work as part of the talented multinational design and production team to find ways to realise the vision of the client and architect using advanced FRP composite materials. This project has made full use of Gurit’s wide range of expertise in the technology of advanced FRP composite structures, including materials development, processing, testing and structural engineering, and I think that we can be proud of our contribution to this landmark project."

For a full report on design and construction of the Makkah clock tower, see link at right for story from the September 2010 issue of High-Performance Composites magazine.

nop not the whole city..there are some districts are out side the "restricted zone" Like AL Umra and AL Nawareyya districts in north Makkah and AL-Sharae'e Districts (where the sport city is) in East Makkah..
About Madinah the easiest example is the new "KEC" :)

Makkah Clock Royal Tower turn on DEVA bearings

http://www.bi-me.com/myPictures/Makkah_Clock_Royal_Tower_180.jpg
Fri February 10, 2012

INTERNATIONAL. Federal-Mogul Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML) has supplied high-performance self-lubricating bearings from its DEVA bearings division to ensure reliable operation of the world's largest tower clock, the Makkah Clock Royal Tower at the Fairmont Hotel in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The bearings were designed in close cooperation with German tower clock manufacturer Perrot. The exceptional demands created by the shafts carrying hour and minute hands each weighing around 7.5 tonnes, ruled out any conventional solutions, such as roller or bronze plain bearings.

Only Federal-Mogul's self-lubricating deva.bm® was able to handle the combination of extreme loads, low rotational speed, intermittent motion and harsh operating environment.

The new clock tower, standing 601 metres (approx. 1,969 feet), is six times the height of Big Ben's clock tower in London and features four clock faces, each 43 metres (approx.141 feet) in diameter, legible from up to 10 kilometres (approx. 6 miles) away.

The hour and minute hands move only once per minute, leading to huge static and inertia loads for the bearings to carry. Sand storms, winter storms, extreme daily temperature fluctuations and the high risk of lightning strikes combine to create a uniquely harsh and abrasive operating environment.

"Federal-Mogul DEVA has refined a proven solution to suit an especially demanding application," says Gerard Chochoy, senior vice president, Powertrain Sealing and Bearings. "Our application engineers have again demonstrated our technology leadership in the field of self-lubricating bearings."

Federal-Mogul's deva.bm is a self-lubricating composite material, produced using a special sintering method. It is maintenance-free and features extremely high static and dynamic load-carrying capacity and a low friction coefficient, due to homogeneous solid lubricant inclusions such as graphite and PTFE, within the bronze matrix.

Bearings featuring this material are ideally suited to sliding contact and greatly outperform conventional roller bearings in applications characterised by heavy loads, low rotational speeds and lack of lubrication.

"The material has proven its worth a thousand times over, especially under conditions of high load, intermittent motion and dusty or abrasive environments. This is exactly what was required for the tower clock in Mecca," explains August Stadlmayr, managing director of Federal-Mogul's DEVA bearings business.

Federal-Mogul designed the bearings in close cooperation with Perrot to be maintenance-free for several decades. Arranged in quarter segments for easy mounting, each of the 16 bearings required for the four movements carries a self-lubricating contact layer just 1.5mm thick on a 5mm backing.

Such minimal thicknesses are sufficient to reliably carry each of the 700mm (approx. 28-inch) diameter hour-hand shafts and the 300mm (approx. 12-inch) diameter minute-hand shafts.

Four clock movements have been constructed, one for each side of the tower. The central elements are two shafts that support the hour and minute hands, driven by servomotors. The motor for the minute hand switches on 15 seconds before the top of the minute, moving the 22-metre (approx. 72 feet) minute hand forward 60 times an hour, 1,440 times a day, 525,600 times a year.

"The very low shaft speeds and extremely high loads mean classic bronze bearing solutions with grease or oil lubrication would soon reach their limits under these conditions," explains Stadlmayr. "These heavily loaded bearings are expected to operate maintenance-free over decades in spite of extremely difficult conditions."

Following successful year-long trials at Perrot that included lightning strike tests, the first of the four movements was installed in late summer 2010. At that time only one of the four sides of the fibre-reinforced concrete tower had been completed. All construction work has now been completed. All four movements of the world's largest tower clock are now ticking in sync.

Clock Tower Facts

-- At 601 metres (approx. 1,969 feet), the clock tower is six times higher
than Big Ben's clock tower in London
-- The dials on the four sides of the tower have a diameter of 43 metres
(approx. 141 feet)
-- The minute hands are 22 metres (approx. 72 feet) long and weigh around
7.5 tonnes each
-- The hour hands are 17 metres (approx. 55 feet) long and weigh around 7.5
tonnes each

DEVA Bearings

Because DEVA sliding contact bearings work so well in demanding conditions such as extreme heat or icy temperatures, or conditions with heavy loads, dirt and dust, they have been used in the toughest of applications. Federal-Mogul's experience includes heavy duty, wind turbines, hydro-electric plants, construction, the marine and offshore industry and the iron and steel making industry.

Incredible View at Raffles Creamery Cafe in Makkah
http://www.peachbox.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/RMH_cremery_logo.jpg
February 5, 2012

I went to Mecca during the weekend to perform Omra. Inshallah الله يتقبلها مني

If you are going to Mecca these coming days or in a month or two when the weather is cool, I suggest visiting Raffles Creamery Cafe at Raffles Makkah Palace Hotel. It has an incredible view of Haram. They have indoors and outdoors seating area. The view of outdoors seating area is amazing. The cafe is located in the main floor where the lobby is and it opens at 4pm until 1am.

If you are going to planning to go, enter Waqf King Abdelaziz through the main door, take the elevators on the right side to P11 floor and then enter the lobby of Raffles Makkah Palace hotel. The cafe should be on the right side of hotel. The view at night is incredible (see picture) so pray your Isha prayer at haram and then drink your coffee or have a quick snack there. Really worth it! While you are at it, don’t forget to pray for me. http://www.peachbox.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I also do not like this tower, built in the middle of a dried valley full of dirty and poor houses. In my opinion, it doesnt fit very well. Furthermore it looks not very elegant with the trashy tents on the top roof of the lowest part of the complex.

I love London :bowtie:

directly behind this monster there are about 20 skyscrapers planned in one big complex, tallest about 300m. they will be directly across the street so this whole thing will look like one architectural mountain <3

Whats the building U/C on the right side of the picture?

it's an extension for the kaaba entrance. not tall but massive. it's to improve the flow of muslims to and away from the kaaba. at least that's what i think it's for, saw only few videos and pictures.

this video should be helpful :)

Fire in Makkah

حريق البرج المجاور للحرم المكي كان بسبب “مدخنة مطعم” وتمت السيطرة عليه خلال دقائق

Fire tower adjacent to the campus was in Mecca because of
the "chimney restaurant" and was brought under control within minutes

http://www.saudinow.com/news_data/2012/02/harmakkahh.jpg
17 February 2012

According to news sources that the cause of the smoke he saw Mrtado the Grand Mosque is due to the high proportion of oil leaks in the chimney and fresh restaurant, located to the draft Mecca for Reconstruction and Development, did not reach the roles of the hotel and there was no effect and did not result in any injury.

Montashari said that civil defense teams started the event and the situation Rhode communication, and it became clear that increasing the proportion of smoke emerging from the chimney of the restaurant was a result of leakage of heavy oils and sediments Palmdkhna.

It is worth mentioning that the appearance of smoke followed the performance of the worshipers to evening prayers at the Haram al-Sharif, which led to its rapid spread through social networks.
