Multan is a city located in East Central Pakistan, in the Punjab, near the Chenab River. It has a population of 1,182,441 and is an important road and rail junction, an agricultural center, and a market for textiles, leather goods, and other products. The city's industries include metalworking, flour, sugar, and oil milling, and the manufacture of textiles, fertilizer, soap, and glass. Multan is also known for its handicrafts, especially pottery and enamel work.
One of the subcontinent's oldest cities, Multan derives its name from an idol in the temple of the sun god, a shrine of the pre-Muslim period. The city was conquered (c.326 BC) by Alexander the Great , visited (AD 641) by the Chinese Buddhist scholar Hsüan-tsang, taken (8th cent.) by the Arabs, and captured by Muslim Turkish conqueror Mahmud of Ghazna in 1005 and by Timur in 1398. In the 16th and 17th century, Multan enjoyed peace under the early Mughal emperors.
In 1818 the city was seized by Ranjit Singh, leader of the Sikhs. The British held it from 1848 until Pakistan achieved independence in 1947. Landmarks include an old fort containing the 14th-century tombs of two Muslim saints.

HasanB November 8th, 2004, 01:03 AM In any case, i think that it has been sufficiently stated that there is a difference between worship and paying respects. Perhaps you made a mistake zu. Anyway, there will be no more posts on this aspect, this is not the place for it, the thread is about Multan, so back to the topic please, otherwise i will be forced to temporarily close this thread.
Thanks.

They say that tourism in pakistan HAS increased, but i dont see any proper steps being taken by the government or city districts to improve tourist spots.

UnitedPakistan January 25th, 2006, 12:32 AM Multan's transportation system is undergoing heavy construction. I think the city is very decent but as we all know the city has a crappy airport and 1 mini scraper. For some reason Multan is full of schools though which gives me the feeling that Multan might have a better future because of the strong density of the schools.

Why? MOTORWAY...people need an easy way to get to cities. Sadly Multan Road isn't one of them...when the M4 is built you'll see big changes in Multan just like what Faisalabad is undergoing right now.

Rawalpindi is really poor developed like every other so-called big city of Pakistan. What do they have to offer! These kind of cities don't have any kind of master plan until then they will be underdeveloped.

Should not be a suprise since 54% of the nation is still young.

Ohh god!
I hate these Pakistani jahil city portals. The design of these sites puts me off completely and then they just try to mass up a hoard of crap of content. They are nothing but inept webmasters who have limited their visitors. The person who makes/made humarapakistan is the smarter one out of the dumbarses.
Pakia January 4th, 2007, 12:58 AM ^^ I agree that quality is very poor & unprofessional of such websites but the info is still useful to most of us. So please lets not call them jahil or such.
They probably love their city or country just as much as us. Its not their fault if they didn't have opportunities of good quality education like many of us here.
They did try atleast.
I say thank you to them but keep trying to do better next time.

A mess is the place where military personnel socialise, eat and (in some cases) live. In some societies this military usage has extended to other disciplined services eateries such as civilian fire fighting and police forces.

numb.soul June 8th, 2008, 12:53 PM my grandparents were from multan..
they came to gurgaon in 1947
(millions of ppl left for india/pakistan ..leaving their resources behind)
****
they came to delhi..there they came to know that small peices of land are being distributed in gurgaon(a small town then)to ppl who came from multan..
that area was called "camp"...at that time... nd still is..
****
ull be surprised to know that the language multani is very much alive here..
my father is very fluent in multaani..(n so d people of his generation)..
mazaak/shugal etc sab isi lang me hota hai..:)
*****
till 1995.. majority of ppl(more then 75%) were of multan origin..n there conversations were in multani only.....
globalisation took over then n a new city came up parallel to it.. that part(camp) is now called old gurgaon....
i belong to d new one..but still understand d language..cant speak though..but i do try.. coz tashan hai iska :D

lolzz..that reminds me of umeir sharif's play"bakra munna bhae"
in d starting he mimicks an old multani amma..
he goes like " kutteya d bachha..kaun bulendya pae hai.." dass menu..
boy--chuaar
girl--chueer..

Mahratta September 14th, 2008, 05:20 PM Multan looks great.
South Asian cities have a wealth of medieval buildings, it seems Multan has a thriving old city. As in India, it also seems that the old areas are being ruined by wires everywhere, decrepit unmaintained buildings, etc.
We need to take care of our history too - not just focus on the future and abandon the past

AzharUlIslam January 5th, 2012, 04:08 PM Double Phatak Flyover which is renamed as Yusuf Raza Gilani Flyover on inauguration, is the longest flyover (about 1.6 Km) of Multan.
It starts from Boman Ji Chowk passes over Aziz Hotel Chowk, Railway Line, Double Phatak Area, Kumhar Mandi and ends at Liaqat-Abad at Old Shuja-Abad Road.
This flyover is the part of Inner Ring Road Project & in future it will be used as a route towards starting point of M-4 (Multan-FaisalAbad Motorway).
(Very less traffic sighted on flyover due to the bad condition of Old Shuja-Abad Road which is starting/ending point.)

February 01 - An illuminated view of Rescue 1122 building decorated with colorful lights in connection with Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) celebrations.
Celebration is one thing but I'm quite sure that this garrish display is almost unislamic.
Paindoos & jalti-bujhti lights are a dangerous mix.

Metropole June 9th, 2012, 07:31 AM Multan is turning out nicely. But in the past my image of Multan was based on this famous Farsi couplet:
چهار چيز است تحفه در مولتان
گرد وگرما گدا و گورستان
With four rare things Multan abounds
Heat, Saints, Dust and Burial Grounds
Now I would like to visit the city some time, inshallah.
Pakia July 6th, 2012, 10:47 PM Considered one of the four holiest places for Punjabi Hindus; other three being in Indian Punjab.
Multan was earlier known as Kashyappur then. This name was subsequently changed to Pralhadpur, after Pralhad occupied the throne after his father was killed by Lord.
Built in 1810 when Great Sun temple of Multan was destroyed bu muslim conquests. Later in 1853 British canon ball created a hole in the roof and eventually was somewhat abandoned due to water from rain.
Destroyed again by mobs in 1992 after Babri masjid incident in India, now case is pending in courts, so it either be rebuilt or replaced by place of wazu for muslims, which Pakistan constitution forbids to replace a place of worship of one religion for use by another.

Sawi masjid
The Sawi Mosque is the oldest remaining mosque. It is situated in the narrow alleys of old Multan city.
A picture of neglect, time has considerably damaged this mosque. Its roof is missing and it has been badly damaged. The remaining structure decorated with ornamental blue glazed tiles speaks volumes of its past beauty.

Good work sherjee. Is this exactly 1.6km? 2nd longest flyover in the country is Banaras flyover Karachi 1.64kms. So this is almost combined 2nd longest flyover of country :)
(8.5 km elevated section of MBS & Lyari expressway are actually elevated road/expressway not flyovers. Technically flyover and bridge are different)
