View Full Version : Worst cover versions of all time
Pobbie April 6th, 2006, 06:47 AM Right then, let's see what stinking abominations you lot can come up with. Here's a few starters:
All Saints - Under The Bridge
Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love
Madonna - American Pie
Stereophonics - Don't Let Me Down
Candy Flip - Strawberry Fields Forever
Doctor And The Medics - Spirit In The Sky
Gareth Gates - Spirit In The Sky
Gareth Gates - Suspicious Minds
Gareth Gates & Will Young - The Long And Winding Road
Scooter - The Logical Song
Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame
Atomic Kitten - The Tide Is High
William Shatner - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
A1 - Take On Me
Crazy Frog - Axel F
Wyclef Jean - Another One Bites The Dust
Fine Young Cannibals - Ever Fallen In Love
Plus any of those risible townie dance rip-offs of classic 80s pop, the most recent example I can think of being "Dr. Beat".
Bikkel April 6th, 2006, 08:59 AM It's heavily based on Dick Dale's Miserlou but won't count as a cover but Black Eyed Peas annoy me to the point of despair with their current hit.
I don't agree with the cover of Ever Fallen In Love. I treasure the original, I have all Buzzcocks singles and this one isn't better but it's not crap. Replace that with Elton John and The Futureheads' cover
And I loved The Logical Song. I hate Supertramp with a vengeance but I love how Scooter trashed it!
Toots & The Maytals - Take Me Country Roads
- crap track from a great artist!
Paul Young - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Pobbie April 6th, 2006, 09:08 AM Elton John and The Futureheads covered it too? Good grief.
Paul Young - Love Will Tear Us Apart
:runaway:
Bikkel April 6th, 2006, 09:20 AM They were hoping on the Peel Is Dead Bandwagon with that cover to be released around the first anniversary of John Peel's death last October but it didn't make the Radio1 playlist. In Austria I heard an ever worse cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart, and this was in 1981 already but I reluctantly forgot by who it was.
Blindfold April 6th, 2006, 09:24 AM Tatu - How Soon is Now. An abomination.
Bikkel April 6th, 2006, 09:36 AM ^^ One of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. Tatu rings a bell but I won't need to check now, will I?
Bachy Soletanche April 6th, 2006, 10:03 AM They were hoping on the Peel Is Dead Bandwagon with that cover to be released around the first anniversary of John Peel's death last October but it didn't make the Radio1 playlist. Paul Young?
rolybling April 6th, 2006, 12:20 PM Basically any cover version done by any boy/girl band.
For instance, How Deep Is Your Love by Take That...It's just wrong.
It always amuses me how these boy bands rely on covers so much to cover up the fact they have no real writing talent in the band, and before anyone tells me that "actually Gary Barlow is a talented song writer," I disagree.
dinp April 6th, 2006, 01:16 PM Human League - Don't You Want Me (1995 Version), their 1981 one was much better :D
Butterfield April 6th, 2006, 05:29 PM Unfinished Sympathy by Tina Turner.
However much I love Ms Bullock, that was just wrong. :gaah:
Biosonic April 6th, 2006, 06:06 PM ...
Plus any of those risible townie dance rip-offs of classic 80s pop, the most recent example I can think of being "Dr. Beat".
HOW VERY DARE YOU!!!!! ;)
The Mylo bootleg of Under Pressure and Doctor Beat is genius!
Unless you were on about something else?
:)
Rigadon April 6th, 2006, 09:42 PM the she goes by Six pence noen the richer.
Actaully i thinkhte Gates - suspicous minds one was the worst ever.
Kinda of lenjoyed atomic kittens version of the tide is high- it was a harmless fun cover of one of blondies weaker singles.
Rigadon April 6th, 2006, 09:43 PM Oh I forgot the Boyzone guy's version of fairytale of NY.
Rigadon April 6th, 2006, 09:46 PM it wasnt bad but seal's non-adamski cover of Killer must be one of the most pointless ever.
wjfox April 6th, 2006, 10:01 PM Without a doubt, it would have to be Puff Daddy's cover of Sting's "Every breath you take".
wjfox April 6th, 2006, 10:02 PM HOW VERY DARE YOU!!!!! ;)
The Mylo bootleg of Under Pressure and Doctor Beat is genius!
Completely agree!
NothingBetterToDo April 6th, 2006, 10:26 PM i remember a few years back some crappy band released a cover album of all Madonna's older stuff............pretty naff stuff
The Fugitive April 7th, 2006, 12:21 AM Kinda of lenjoyed atomic kittens version of the tide is high- it was a harmless fun cover of one of blondies weaker singles.
It was one of Blondie's weaker singles, mainly because they didn't even write the thing to begin with - John Holt did. Blondie have had three huge hits which were actually cover versions: Denis and Hanging On The Telephone being the other two. But it's very easy for people to assume that they wrote all three cos they're so easily identifiable as theirs.
jmancuso April 7th, 2006, 01:32 AM Without a doubt, it would have to be Puff Daddy's cover of Sting's "Every breath you take".
it's pretty bad as is the case with most of puffy's songs...hacked up remixes of older tunes.
William Shatner - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Butterfield April 7th, 2006, 02:40 AM it wasnt bad but seal's non-adamski cover of Killer must be one of the most pointless ever.
Wasn't the non-Adamski album version the original and the Adamski version a remix/re-recording??
Pobbie April 7th, 2006, 02:54 AM HOW VERY DARE YOU!!!!! ;)
The Mylo bootleg of Under Pressure and Doctor Beat is genius!
Unless you were on about something else?
:)
Nope, that's the one. I just don't like the way pretty much every song from the 80s will soon be only remembered as some rip-off by DJ Twatface or someone. I mean, even "Bette Davis Eyes" got the remix treatment. :(
Butterfield April 7th, 2006, 03:14 AM I mean, even "Bette Davis Eyes" got the remix treatment. :(
That wasn't exactly a remix, the Mylo choon was just based on it. You can still listen to the Kim Carnes original without thinking of Mylo unlike the original Dr Beat by Miami "Gloria" Sound "Estefan" Machine where it now sounds weak compared with Dr Pressure. Grrrrah!!! :bash:
HeadBanger April 7th, 2006, 03:29 AM the original Dr Beat by Miami "Gloria" Sound "Estefan" Machine where it now sounds weak compared with Dr Pressure.
Sorry I've got the 12" Miami "Gloria" Sex "Estefan" Machine
& totally disagree
Pobbie April 7th, 2006, 03:58 AM I also totally disagree! :sly:
Butterfield April 7th, 2006, 05:16 AM Uh uh uh! Mylo "filled" out the song, adding a new dimension to it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.
Pobbie April 7th, 2006, 07:21 AM Yes, and I happen to think it doesn't work. It's called an opinion.
CharlieP April 7th, 2006, 09:36 AM Robbie Williams - Freedom.
rolybling April 7th, 2006, 10:07 AM ^^ forgot about that one Charlie..wrong wrong wrong! The original was so much better and how it should be done.
Tubeman April 7th, 2006, 11:04 AM it wasnt bad but seal's non-adamski cover of Killer must be one of the most pointless ever.
Well he did write the song, so fair play to him.
The 'Adamski' version was just Adamski playing keyboards for Seal.
Tubeman April 7th, 2006, 11:04 AM Most Westloife singles :puke:
CharlieP April 7th, 2006, 11:20 AM ^^ forgot about that one Charlie..wrong wrong wrong! The original was so much better and how it should be done.
Whereas the cover just highlighted Robbie's lack of singing ability...
Starscraper April 7th, 2006, 12:37 PM Marylin Manson did a cover of Another Brick in The Wall part 2 as part of the soundtrack for the Faculty. Its not bad but nothing compared to the original.
Micheasl Jackson did a cover of Come Together: Not good.
CharlieP April 7th, 2006, 01:43 PM Not very tactful either :D
Reddensg April 7th, 2006, 03:12 PM Will Young - Light My Fire
Eric Prydz - Call on Me (Steve Winwood's Valerie was better, though can't fault the video!)
Girls Aloud - Jump (For Your Lvoe)
M People - Itchicoo Park
Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O' Mine
Vic Chestnut - It's The End Of The World As We Know It
Hilary Duff - My Generation
All Saints - Under the Bridge
Bikkel April 7th, 2006, 03:39 PM Rolf Harris - Stairway to Heaven
Thanks, didn't know about that one, must be awful
Chevvers - Tie Me Kangaroo Down

Just think of a bearded Aussie, with a wobble board and no other instruments, singing that guitar classic. It makes me want to hurt things :bash:
Bikkel April 7th, 2006, 03:45 PM :D
I knew he was up to no good but had no idea he mangled about every classic track from ther sixties and seventies. Well, he gets a bit of his own treat on that Shitmat project, called "Rolf' on Wrong Records.
rolybling April 7th, 2006, 06:56 PM Whereas the cover just highlighted Robbie's lack of singing ability...
You're quite right, makes you wonder who told him he could pull it off lol :bash:
rolybling April 7th, 2006, 06:59 PM Just think of a bearded Aussie, with a wobble board and no other instruments, singing that guitar classic. It makes me want to hurt things :bash:
its truly painful, I've heard it
Pobbie April 7th, 2006, 10:07 PM M People - Itchicoo Park
Confession time - I heard this version long before the original and quite liked it. Can you people ever forgive me? I was only 10 or 11 at the time!
Hilary Duff - My Generation
I despair...
Tubeman April 7th, 2006, 11:34 PM Bombalurina featuring Timmy Mallett: Eensy weensy teeny weeny yellow polkadot bikini
Rigadon April 8th, 2006, 12:23 AM Well he did write the song, so fair play to him.
The 'Adamski' version was just Adamski playing keyboards for Seal.
No -as far as I know he wrote the lyrics. I wouldn't say Tim Rice wrote Joseph or Jesus Christ superstar.
Not that its all that relevant even if he'd just hired adamski for the day to play the keyboard score I just dont see what the second version added to msuic.
Rigadon April 8th, 2006, 12:25 AM It was one of Blondie's weaker singles, mainly because they didn't even write the thing to begin with - John Holt did. well I never and i also wrongly assumed that Mr Manson's tainted love was a cover of a song originally by soft cell
Martin G April 8th, 2006, 12:49 AM Confession time - I heard this version long before the original and quite liked it. Can you people ever forgive me? I was only 10 or 11 at the time!
I despair...
YOU despair? Oh my god. Robbie - were you feeling all right? I mean, you actually preferred the honking goose with the pineapple on her head's "interpretation" as opposed to the very fine and dandy original? :runaway:
Tubeman April 8th, 2006, 12:56 AM No -as far as I know he wrote the lyrics. I wouldn't say Tim Rice wrote Joseph or Jesus Christ superstar.

I think the lyrics and the melody... But I'm not disputing that it would have been a poo song without Adamski's keyboards and Seal owes everything to Adamski. The memorable thing about 'Killer' is Adamski's keyboard riff, not the lyrics or melody. After Adamski launched him he wrote some fantastic songs though whilst Adamski floundered.
Gareth April 8th, 2006, 12:57 AM The re-recorded verson of Feed The World by Band Aid. Totally fucking pathetic.
BABYCAKES April 8th, 2006, 01:09 AM Anybody heard Rustie Lee's version of 'Barbados'?
Butterfield April 8th, 2006, 03:51 AM The memorable thing about 'Killer' is Adamski's keyboard riff, not the lyrics or melody.
So I take it you don't remember these lyrics??
So you want
to be free?
To live your life
the way you wanna be
Will you give
if we cry?
Will we live
or will we die?
Tainted hearts
heal with time
Shoot that love
so we can stop the end
Solitary brother
Is there still a part of you that wants to live?
Solitary sister
is there still a part of you that wants to give?
If we try
and live your life
the way you wanna
yeah
Solitary brother
Is there still a part of you that wants to live?
Solitary sister
is there still a part of you that wants to give? (x3)
Racism in among future kings can only lead to no good
and besides
all our sons and daughters already know how that feels
yeah yeah yeah yeah
I love everything about this song, it was one of my first singles. I think I learnt how to speak thanks to these lyrics! It was the first time I'd ever heard the word 'racism'.
CharlieP April 8th, 2006, 09:49 AM Bombalurina featuring Timmy Mallett: Eensy weensy teeny weeny yellow polkadot bikini
Woh... woh... Woh YEAH!
CharlieP April 8th, 2006, 09:54 AM The re-recorded verson of Feed The World by Band Aid. Totally fucking pathetic.
To me, that song just highlighted to me what a waste of space all these manufactured modern pop acts are - nobody's personality ever threatened to come out on the track at any point (and don't even get me started on the rapping)...
Butterfield April 8th, 2006, 03:45 PM It was that good that I don't remember hearing it once last Christmas, compared with the original which you have heard EVERY Christmas since 1984.
Bachy Soletanche April 8th, 2006, 04:18 PM well I never and i also wrongly assumed that Mr Manson's tainted love was a cover of a song originally by soft cell
Do you think Mr. Manson knew that Soft Cell hadn't written it? Stupid fake tosser. And Remember his cover of Seven Seas? bloomin awful.
Another Rubbish cover Guns'n'Roses version of Love and Let Die, the only time a Paul McC*nty cover was wimpier than the Orginal.
Bachy Soletanche April 8th, 2006, 10:03 PM Do you think Mr. Manson knew that Soft Cell hadn't written it? Stupid fake tosser. And Remember his cover of Seven Seas? bloomin awful.

Oops, I meant of course, Sweet Dreams by the Eurthmics.
Another terrible Cover Version Metallica's version of Thin Lizzies (yes, I know, but I bet they Metallica didn't) Whiskey in the Jar, Metallica please meet subtly, groove, rhythm, SWING. All the Things that make the Orginal...
rolybling April 9th, 2006, 10:33 AM Backstreet Boys-Last Christmas
it's a stinker!
Martin G April 9th, 2006, 02:55 PM Backstreet Boys? Backpassage Boys more like.
wjfox April 9th, 2006, 03:28 PM Welcome back to the skybar Martin. :)
maccoinnich April 9th, 2006, 03:39 PM Britney Spears - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Donna Summer - MacArthur Park (it takes a special form of genius to make that song worse)
Of course, the single worst of all time was mentioned in the first post - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as performed by Shatner.

Not heard that one, but I bet it's about as good as all those "IRONIC" Pop covers by Coldplay/Travis/Starsailor blandies.
Pobbie April 9th, 2006, 08:51 PM Louise - Stuck In The Middle
Bikkel April 10th, 2006, 03:32 AM Paul Young - (I'm Gonna Tear Your) Playhouse Down
Eruption - I Can't Stand The Rain
Boney M - The Rivers of Babylon - that cheeky monkey Farell first too credit for writing that song
Glenn Miller Band - In The Mood - uncredited original from South Africa, late 19th Century, Belgian national radio has the original
Pobbie April 10th, 2006, 03:50 AM Have you ever heard XTC's version of "All Along The Watchtower"? :runaway:
Noostairz April 10th, 2006, 03:53 AM celtic supporters singing you'll never walk alone. it's a liverpool FC song - get your own.
Bikkel April 10th, 2006, 04:04 AM Have you ever heard XTC's version of "All Along The Watchtower"? :runaway:
Do you know the original? Not that great really. I don't like that man who did the original.
Pobbie April 10th, 2006, 04:13 AM Bob Dylan never did have a good voice.
Bikkel April 10th, 2006, 04:23 AM Doobie Brothers - Listen to The Music, bweh
Martin G April 10th, 2006, 10:05 PM Beatles - Twist And Shite.
Gareth April 10th, 2006, 10:30 PM Staying with Live Aid, did anyone see the G8 opening duet of Bono and Paul McCartney doing Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? It made me wanna chuck! :puke:
Martin G April 10th, 2006, 10:34 PM Everything makes you wanna chuck Gareth! ;)
