Yeah, that's one of my favourite parts of the city at the bottom of Dean Street just before the quayside. It feels a bit Gotham City like with loads of buildings squeezed underneath bridges, it's got so much character.

Hey, I've met that Charv! Surprised me, he was actually not a bad guy to talk to. Ended up sittin on a bench (he carred on drinking his bottle of lambrini) talking about some photos I had been taking on the town moor. I showed him some of them on the camera once I was pretty sure he wasn't gonna try and nick it! lol

What is he then? Ok, he's not full blown chav but what other urban sub culture would you describe him as?

I think I remember him admitting as much anyway.

lol, but he called himself a chav!

Andrew
November 4th, 2005, 03:19 PM
or at least i think he did, or was he just complaining that he kept being called a chav... I dunno, doesn't matter. He did have that bottle of lambrini (or whatever it was, some kind of cheap white wine, i mean like the 3 quid a bottle kinda stuff) which he was guzzling from the bottle he had on the town moor! Doesn't that scream chav?

That is just an awesome building on the Quayside. I went to Newcastle Uni and used to yearn to own the top floor flat! Sadly I was beaten to it by, last I heard, a partner from one of the big 4 accountancy firms. :(

I can't believe that this site is still undeveloped after all these years, looks like it won't be for long judging from the hoardings. I'd be fascinated to see what's going there, it's certainly a superb location.

Lordy it's the junior fat sl@gs!
These 2 should copyright themselves as stereotypical geordie lasses! Thunderthighs, sparetyres hanging over their miniskirt. Doubtless their night will end down an alley off the Bigg Market with a fat bloke from Benwell. :D

You understand I'm not one to make rash judgements about people purely based on a photo. ;)

Fantastic pics, why's it so busy in the first pic, and what's that digger vehicle with flamethrowers on it?

The tall ships race. I was there on the tuxedo princess!

Great pics, BTW.

I can't believe that this site is still undeveloped after all these years, looks like it won't be for long judging from the hoardings. I'd be fascinated to see what's going there, it's certainly a superb location.
Nothing too inspiring I'm afraid:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v293/throwaway/trinity.jpg
Actually what's on the hoardings has nothing to do with the development though, they were just put up by the council to cover up an unsightly gap in the buildings. The building proposed is unfortunately in my opinion a bit of a missed opportunity (as is the Westgate House replacement), at least it fills the gap though and it doesnt look bad.

Went to Newcastle for a Stag weekend recently - I must commend you Geordies on your fine array of young ladies - never seen so much talent packed into one weekend (shame about the strippers though).

Didnt get a chance to go down to the river area, as shown in most of these pictures above - looked cool when we drove through it though. Mostly stayed around the nightclub area - Tiger Tiger etc. It rained all weekend and was freeeeezing, so didnt fancy walking down to the riverside. Brrrr!

Whats with the acres of farmland in the middle of the city (in the Jesmond area)? Thought it was a bit odd how St. James' park dominates the city skyline, I suppose it shows Newcastle's apparent dilike of tall buildings. Must be fantastic to be shopping downtown though when there is a match on - the atmosphere spilling out of that ground right into the city streets isnt really something you see very often with major football stadiums usually a couple of miles outside the city centre.

JDN21. thats'; the town moor, really historic park in the middle ofthe city. personally i don't like, far too big and segregates the city.

you're right about the stadium and the dislike of tall buildings, but that might be changing in the future.

p.s. the whole city is nightclub area! never visited a city with the same density of bars/pubs/clubs before.

Looks like a really beautifull city, lots of character and heritage, and wasn't desecrated by the sixties tower block revolution

and wasn't desecrated by the sixties tower block revolution
Oh yes it was! We lost some of the country's finest architecture for concrete office blocks and a shopping mall and to top it all off we got a wonderful motorway ploughed right through the middle of the city effectively bisecting it! The 60s was a terrible time for Newcastle!

Example:
The once magnificent Grainger designed Newcastle Royal Arcade ...

http://www.oldprints.co.uk/prints/nh/89421.jpg http://www.oldprints.co.uk/prints/nh/images/nh037.jpg

... was replaced with this ugly piece of shit ...

http://www.timmonet.co.uk/assets/images/Swan_House_From_Manors.jpg

... and this ...
http://www.timmonet.co.uk/assets/images/Swan_Royal_Arcade_East.jpg

... (a plaster cast copy of the interior of the arcade) was the sorry excuse for 'conservation' of heritage!!

Newcastle has ugly high-rise council blocks of flats in abundance as well, here's Cruddas Park:

That's a shame, the town hall seems to have been a very beautiful building.

Another thing is the old YMCA building on blackett street. South part of blackett street (including the bridge over it) must be one of the worst part of Newcastle city centre.

Shit! thats depressing!

Before the sixties steamroller though, Newcastle looks like (though I've never been there sadly) it was somewhat blessed architecturally; some grand buildings and ambitions aswell as the legacy of the industrial steel engineering. Can anyone tell me why this was so, was it at one point a very wealthy city?
It does seem to be one of Britains more photogenic cities, along with London, Edinburgh and a few others.

Andrew
April 4th, 2006, 03:37 PM
Newcastle is still (thank God) very much blessed architecturally. It's a testament to the sheer number of beautiful old buildings (not the planning process) that Newcastle had that so much still survives. Also thank God they ran out of money before they destroyed everything. I've seen the plans for the city from the 1960s and had they all been built we'd be left with one of the worst experiments in 60s planning ever devised!
A lot still survives, look at this 360 degree panorama I took from the top of Grey's monument for www.skyscrapernews.com and you'll get an idea of what survives (and I'm sure you wont have any trouble identifying the buildings they plonked in the middle of the city in the 60s as well):
http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/794Newcastle360_pic1.jpg
Allow me to point a few out though:
Old Eldon Square (far left) was once fronted on all four sides with georgian townhouses (now they're a shopping centre)
55 Degrees North (used to be called Swan House), the building I posted above that replaced the Royal Arcade is visable in the distance (about half way).
Grainger Street (2/3rds of the way, the straight street that goes directly from where the photo was taken) still survives in almost perfect condition but look along the street and near the end on either side are two tower blocks on streets nearby. These were insensitively plonked in the middle of one of the most beautiful historic areas in the city.

As for the Town Hall; Johnny I had no idea about that one! That's an even worse loss than Eldon Square in my opinion, what a shame!

Very interesting point 2zanzibar. Throughout the industrial revolution, and until the 1950s, places like Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester were HUGELY wealthy, and it was London and the SE that lagged behind. Then, the tables were turned somewhat, largely due to de-instustrialisation.

The quantity and quality of massive and beautiful commercial Victorian buildings you see in them today is testament to this.

Its just a shame the modern developments so substandard and the majority such nimbies. Newcastle probably had a stronger base to start from then the likes of Leeds and Manchester but theres just something a little parochial which is causing the place to fall behind in my experience of living there.

used to be a warehouse for the Co-Op. we'd never build something like that nowadays, plastic and corrugated metal is the way to go :ohno:

Love Edinburgh and of course Newcastle.

Did you make it down Grey street and Dean street to the Quayside in Newcastle?

They are the most beautiful parts of the city.

No sadly i didnt. Instead of getting the train to the Metro Centre (the most depressingly monotonous place i've ever been to) i should have walked down to the river. Looking at Dean Street and Grey Street on Live search maps i can see what you mean about that being the most beautiful area.

I was feeling a bit sick after stuffing my face on Christmas day. I couldnt sleep so I got up early on Boxing day and went for a walk. Not ideal conditions for taking photos, overcast, poor light, plus the fact that after 10 mins my hands were freezing and I could hardly steady the camera  but anyhow take a look .

It was about 9 am when I started, Everywhere was shut except for a few Newsagents here and there and the big stores in the main shopping areas with sales galore. It was like a ghost town down by the river, deserted, accept for a few lone drunks here and there.

not gone just yet, the demolition keeps getting stalled and with current construction woes it might take a while to get the scheme underway. personally i'd prefer to keep the carpark and rebuild the low-rise tat at the bottom of it. it's a icon and imo looks better than the rubbish scheduled to replace it.

I take it the reason why the car park is getting demolished because theres never been a demand for that many car parking spaces. 7 floors seems excessive

hollow man
December 31st, 2008, 12:18 AM
The car park is hideous, but thats why we like it, I wish it wasnt getting knocked down.

Not sure about lack of demand but its been shut for more years than i can remember, think there were some safety issues with it.

It would be perfect if there was a huge esculator from it over the tyne landing in Northumberland street in Newcastle.

That would be great!

As posted on the "Admin Thread" (copy below) here is the thread combining all those old
PHOTOS THREADS, mainly from the 2005/2006 era on SSC.

ENJOY . . .

6th January 2013.

Over the last couple of days some quite old threads, from long before our Forum was created in October 2009, have started appearing here in the forum.

They were mostly from 2005 and 2006, and were very short threads from the old "Photographic Section" of SSC, which is currently being reorganised.

I was aware of the re-organisation, but I did not know that former Newcastle posters (and some who are still amongst our current posters) had some old threads in there (unused for many years) and that we could have them on the forum if we wanted them.

I received the below message from one of the owners of the SSC Website, gothicform . . .

Yes, I have moved hundreds of old threads from the photographic section recently, which is being reorganised, to the relevant geographical forums, including the North East England Forum.

There were seven or eight old "photos threads" for the Newcastle Forum in total, most of them very short with only five or ten posts in them.

Sadly, also (as happens with 'old links') a lot of the photos on the threads have disappeared, leaving many blank posts, but hopefully those posters who are still members here (as some of them are) may be able to repair those broken links?

Anyway, I have now merged those seven or eight little threads into this one thread . . .

A few old/closed "Photos-threads" from circa 2005 - Found elsewhere in SSC and merged in 2013
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=335560

It is currently (as the 'latest' post on it is April 2009, some six months before our forum came into existence) locked and languishing at the bottom of 'page six' of our forum 'list of threads'.

I will shortly unlock it and it will certainly be an interesting thread (particularly where the photos are still there) to have a good look through!!

Some of our current posters, who were posting back in those early-ish days of SSC, will no doubt also find it quite interesting to re-discover some of their old (probably long forgotten) posts!

As said, I wonder if it is possible for those "broken photos links" to be repaired??
.

Newcastle Historian
January 9th, 2013, 10:21 PM
I have sent PMs to those posters who have posts on this thread, from 2005 and 2006, that are now "blank" as a result of broken links to inserted photos.

Some are still current SSC members, so let's see if some of the links can be repaired.

It may not be possible, but we'll see!
