Gaddafi Tower-Mixed Use-60F-Dakar-Senegal

The Gaddafi Tower, under construction in Dakar, Senegal will be 60-storeys or about 250m, which will make it the tallest skyscraper in Africa, taller than even the 34-year old Carlton Centre in central Johannesburg, which is 50-storeys and 223m. Here is the story I got from News24.com (Naspers). Good going Muammar Gaddafi!

Libya to build 'Gaddafi Tower'
06/04/2006 14:32 - (SA)

Dakar - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade laid the foundation stone on Wednesday of a $250m tower block in Senegal to be called "Gaddafi Tower".

The project, entirely funded by a Libyan investment fund, would stretch over 48 000 square metres with a five-star hotel, a conference centre, offices and shops.

Abdoulaye Balde, executive director of the organisation of the Islamic Conference, speaking at the stone-laying ceremony, said: "This will be one of the major buildings in Africa."

The building would be in Dakar's downtown area opposite the historic island of Goree, a symbol of the colonial-era slave trade in Africa.

Gaddafi arrived in the West African state on Monday for a four-day official visit, coinciding with Senegal's April 4 Independence Day celebrations.

Both Wade and Gaddafi were proponents of pan-Africanism.

the hillbrow tower is not a skyscraper. and it's not the tallest structure in africa either - it is the eskom's duvha power station with 300m (the smoke stacks have stairs and lifts inside). the carlton centre was the tallest skyscraper.

nooo!!! its in sasolburg i think

Here are some other South African structures that are taller than the Hillbrow tower:

301m Secunda - SASOL Synthetic Fuels Steam Plant 3
300m Witbank - Two smoke-stacks of the New Duvha power station
275m Kendal - Kendal Power Station
275m Kriel - Matla Power Station
270m Johannesburg - Hillbrow Tower

The CN Tower (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world, at 553.33 metres. The Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand measures 328 meters and is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere. The hillbrow tower is dwarfed by these two towers. Would love to see some pictures of the Secunda and Witbank structures, anybody have any? Maybe somebody should add a mask to the top of the Secunda tower, only just over 27m is required to make it the highest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Sentech Tower (also known as the Brixton Tower) also in Johannesburg is only 239m.

But the tallest of them all is the Resturant on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town. Its over 1200m high! And its held up in the air by two cables balancing on top of a big rock. :)

lets come back to Earth for a minute, Carlton centre is the tallest building in Africa for the foresable future cos none of these will happen.
In fact South Africa would have had tallest probably since 1800s I would imagine and I wonder if someone has done a timeline of African tallest?
what was before carlton? I think Old Mutiual in CT was tallest at some point

Actually, quite a few of the buildings in Johannesburg were 'the tallest in Africa' at some stage eg. Barbican, Ansteys, Astor Mansions etc.

As always, pipe dreams that will probably never materialize...
Once again, I think that most of the African continent should focus more on building hospitals, schools and other infrastructure to support its citizens, rather then coming up with wild schemes just to prove that they can build some odd 70 flr tower.
Take for instance Angola, Togos goalkeeper was shot, and they had to airlift him to SA to be treated for his wounds. First take care of the basics...
Oh, and by the way that Angolan tower is hideous!!

of course the pyramids were tallest gloabally from 2750BC to 1300AD and is 146.6m Im talking about what surpassed it and since then what has been highest in Africa.
lets work backwards, Carlton was tallest since 1973 at 223m, What was tallest in SA/Africa before that but taller than 146.6m?
Ansteys, barbican etc are all shorter and even Old Mutual in CT is shorter (they may all qualify as SA's tallest but not Africas tallest).

I dont think there is a taller building in SA than pyramids before 1973?

help anyone?

Hey Evany, take it easy... Im not throwing nothing at your face or at anybody for that matter!
The Togo situation was just an example, nothing else.
I simply stated the truth... as africans, we should first focus in improving every inhabitants quality of life in this beautiful continent, then we can dream about 70stry towers, OK?
