Awesome pics,though I would have been more deligted to see atleast a road divider and some lane markings!

^^ that's the road from war memorial towards Central, along the edge of Island Grounds... don't think the footpaths are new - just freshly painted as far as i can make out..

Nice pictures. There is Corporation of Chennai project to remake footpaths all over the city. This picture shows the outcome of that project. It is not complete, but in about a year's time, Chennai will have good footpaths everywhere.

This is the Gemini Flyover on Anna Salai/Mount Road. I think this is the first flyover built in India, forumers correct me if I am wrong.

Has anyone noticed the number plate of Scorpio?

To which state it belongs? coz, I dont see the normal TN, KA, AP, KL, MH ....like that.

Thats a diplomatic number plate given to vehicles of an embassy or consulate of a country in India.

The format is

XCC-XXXX or XCD-XXXX

The first number X denotes the country
If the number contains a CD, its an embassy vehicle
If the number contains a CC, its a consulate (regional embassy) vehicle

eg 1CC 1234 would be a UK consular vehicle with registration 1234

Why consulate is using yellow board for its own vehicle?

The yellow board is the standard for consulate cars. It used to be a blue board in the past, but that has been changed.

Another special registration numbering system is that for military vehicles - they follow their own system and are not registered by the RTO.

Marine Drive flyover in Mumbai was built in1969...i believe Gemini was built sometime in the 1980s?

gemini flyover in chennai was built in 1973.
But i always heard that it is the first flyover built in india. I didn't know marine drive flyover was constructed in 1969.is that confirmed.

I did have a image of the marine drive flyover in the late 60s. There are however conflicting reports on India's first flyover.

Thanks arjeetB. Its news for me.
But i would say gemini flyover was conceived very neatly with entry ramps from GNchetty and mount roads and an exit ramp also to mount road.

I don't understand why these plans were not adopted for next 25 years.

Yes - that is a very important thought...

Building a flyover like Gemini in early 70s would let one think why the city does not have another one like it - in the last three decades.It still is the most effective and the best and other flyovers in chennai ( as of today) do not stand a chance.

Having said that I am looking forward to the kathipara grade separator once it is complete :)

The work would start soon...Few days back Chennai High court dismissed the petition filed by VijayKanth and has given green signal to the NHAI to demoish the buildings..Most of land owners have received the compensation offered by the Govt.

The Princess Street flyover in Mumbai is not primarily a grade separator for road traffic. It is a road-overbridge, over the western railway tracks. One arm of it also cross marine drive, but that is not the main arm of the flyover.

Gemini flyover is the first flyover for a road crossing.

U r wrong. Gemini flyover was constructed much earlier in the early 70s.I was using this flyover when i was residing in chennai in the later 70s.

Chennai seemed to have led the way in urban planning innovations. It was the first to have a set of roads with segregated traffic (separate lanes for buses and trucks, and cars and two and three-wheelers respectively, first on Mount Road and then on Poonamallee High Road)...

I think Mr.arjeetB agreed that gemini flyover was constructed in 1973 after i pointed it out and may be let this issue go.

(Actually i don't know if anybody has noticed the year of construction of gemini is inscribed on it).

At the same time we should remember what Mr.Sridhar said about the difference between gemini and princess street flyover.

However it doesn't matter as Mumbai has the most number of flyovers as of today(or may be New delhi)

Its New Delhi - there is an article posted in 'Delhi Flyovers & Roads" thread - it has taken over from Mumbai as the flyover capital of India...It has constructed more than 30 flyovers in the last 7-8 years or so

There is much to do in Chennai which has scope for atleast 10 large flyovers.
