The huge bay at Balok Beach, which curves round a wide arc offering over 16km of coast with gentle shelves and no sudden drops or reefs, makes it a safe place to host this extreme sport. Together with consistent cross and on-shore winds of between 10 and 20 knots, Balok makes it the top 10 venues in the world for windsurfing.

Extra RM10m and three years to finish hospital
IT took nearly an extra RM10mil and a delay of more than three years to complete the Pekan Hospital.
According to the Auditor-General’s (A-G) report, the initial cost of the contract amounted to RM86.59mil.
However, the figure increased to RM96.45mil.
This included ex-gratia payments by the Public Works Department (PWD) to compensate for losses claimed by the hired contractor due to various reasons, including an increase of building material prices.
The A-G stated that the PWD should have hastened the contract agreement process so that the terms and specifications of the contract could be enforced to protect the interests of the Govern-ment.
The contract stated that the construction which started on Sept 2, 2000 was to be completed in a span of 30 months or 913 days.
The A-G report said several construction defects were found around the hospital building, which had since been repaired and its cost borne by the contractor.
“Audit checks found that there were seven extensions for the contractor, four of which were approved by the PWD. The Government had to bear an extra cost of RM591,598 due to the extensions given,” the report said.
Other checks by the A-G found numerous instruments in the hospital were still left unused, said the report.
This included pathology, rehabilitation, pharmaceutical and sterilisation tools.
“The list of unused equipment has been identified through a detailed discussion by those involved,” the A-G report stated; saying the PWD has suggested that the unused instruments to be given to hospitals that need it.
The A-G concluded in its report saying that the numerous problems regarding the project is caused by the incompetency and carelessness on the those managing and supervising the construction.
“This has caused the Government to face losses that could have been avoided,” the report added.

(fourth from right) and other PBA officials look on in Kuantan recently
KUANTAN: The new RM3mil Pahang Buddhist Association (PBA) haemodialysis centre is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year.
Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming said, once it was operational, the current rented premises in Kampung Tengah near here would be closed.
“There are 53 patients – 30 men and 23 women – who seek treatment at the centre.
“We plan to buy another 19 dialysis machines to complement the current 13,” he said after receiving a cheque for RM276,000 from the Health Ministry at the centre here recently.
Also present were Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong, PBA president Hor Chim Sim, the centre’s chairman Chong Si Mok and its fund-raising committee chairman Datuk Franky Chua.
Pang said the allocation would be used to purchase five machines (at RM40,000 each) and supporting equipment.
He expressed gratitude to Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai for approving the allocation promptly and the state for granting a piece of land for the project.
Chua said the centre would be open to patients of all races, with priority given to the underprivileged.
Six of the patients received free treatment while the rest paid a subsidised fee of between RM5 and RM60, he added.
“The new centre can accommodate up to 150 patients. They must be referred by Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and certified to be from poor families.
“We do not want the facility to be misused. Those who are genuinely poor and ill will be given priority,” he said.
Chua said the centre’s annual expenditure of RM700,00 included salaries for 15 full-time staff members.
He said the centre was grateful to the many philanthropists and members of the public who had chipped in for the building fund.
On average, 3,000 new cases of kidney failure were diagnosed every year, he added.
Each patient needed to undergo dialysis at least three times a week, with each session lasting four hours, he added.
“It is a really an expensive affair with each treatment costing RM250 in private hospitals.
“We have to do what we can to alleviate the suffering of the poor,” he added.

aniqasyranie November 4th, 2009, 04:09 PM Eco Tower To Build US$80 Million Plant In Gebeng Industrial Park
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Foreign-owned wind tower manufacturer, Eco Tower Sdn Bhd will invest US$80 million to establish a new plant at Gebeng Industrial Park in Kuantan, Pahang, with a production capacity of 800 wind towers per annum.
Chief Executive Officer Joseph Lim said the plant was scheduled to commence operations in the second-half of 2010 and the first shipment was expected in the first quarter of 2011.
"We choose to invest in Gebeng because of its strategic location, easy access to sea port and highways, a favourable business climate and highly skilled workforce," he said at the signing of a sales and purchase agreement between Eco Tower and Pahang State Development Corporation (PSDC) here today.
Under the agreement, Eco Tower will purchase 21.58 hectares of industrial land in Gebeng Phase III from PSDC for RM20 million.
Lim said the plant would have the capability to produce wind towers, flanges and nacelle structures mainly to cater for the international markets of Europe, United States and China.
"We are a private equity fund company that specialises in heavy steel fabrication and this is our first venture into the manufacturing of a wind tower.
"We see a growing demand for renewable energy," he said, adding that Eco Tower aimed to generate revenue of US$37 million in the first year of operations and US$120 million onwards.
According to Lim, the renewable energy resisted the global financial crisis more successfully than many other sectors, with new investments in the industry recorded at US$155 billion worldwide in 2008.
Last year, wind energy attracted the highest investment of US$51.8 billion, confirming its status as the most matured and best-established renewable energy generating technology.
Pahang Menteri Besar and PSDC Chairman Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, who signed the agreement on behalf of the corporation, said Eco Tower was expected to employ 500 workers, not including contract and consultation jobs.
He said the investment was the first foreign direct investment in Pahang since the global economic recession and the synergy would help create spin-off effects as many small-and-medium companies can invest in renewable energy both in diversification and strategic alliances.

The Kuantan plant will be the state's first foreign direct investment since 2007 and will make 800 wind towers annually for the international market
Pahang has bagged a US$80 million (US$1 = RM3.42) investment from Singapore-based Eco Tower Sdn Bhd to set up a plant that will make wind towers, tall structures that produce electricity using the wind.
Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the plant, located in Kuantan's Gebeng industrial park, will be the state's first foreign direct investment since 2007.
Eco Tower chief executive officer Joseph Lim said the privately-held company will use Pahang as its base to make 800 wind towers annually for the international market which includes the US, Europe and China.
"We aim to generate US$37 million in revenue in the first year of operations and US$120 million in the second year and increase capacity at the Gebeng plant by fourfold in the future to meet international demand," Lim told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Lim had earlier inked a deal to buy 29.8ha of land in the industrial park from Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Pahang.
The land purchase is part of the US$80 million investment which will be spread out in two phases, of which phase one involves an investment of US$30 million while phase two an investment of US$50 million,
The plant is scheduled to start operations in the first quarter of 2011.
Eco Tower is owned jointly by private investors from Malaysia and Singapore and other foreign investors.
Eco Tower, which started its business in heavy steel manufacturing, will finance part of the project by seeking funds from venture capital firms that focus on renewable energy.
Adnan said the investment, which provides 500 jobs, will create an opportunity to spin off many local small and medium scale enterprises to invest in renewable energy.

Pahang looking for partners to boost its tourism industry
KUANTAN: The Pahang Government is set to establish a formal partnership with groups keen to help the state develop its tourism industry from next year.
State Tourism, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Shafiq Fauzan Sharif said that among the groups identified were the Pahang branch of the Malaysia Nature Society (MNS), hotel operators and village safety and development committees.
He said certain government departments such as the Wildlife and National Parks Department could also be part of the partnership with its national and state parks and wildlife sanctuaries such as the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary.
“The partnership will be a platform for all those who are serious in promoting tourism attractions in Pahang and will also help preserve the natural wonders,” he said when met after launching a “Clean Up the World” campaign at Kampung Cherating Lama here yesterday.
Shafik Fauzan reminded groups invited to join in the partnership not to expect any financial gains.
On the mechanism and setting of the partnership, Shafiq Fauzan said the state government was still working on the best possible model to guarantee its viability.
The “Clean Up the World” campaign was jointly organised by MNS Pahang, Cargill Palm Products Sdn Bhd, Kuantan Municipal Council and Kampung Cherating Lama residents.
Also present were MNS Pahang chairman Datin Narimah Daud and Cargill’s plant superintendent Lokman Mohd Nor.
About 200 people took part in the campaign.

73 Medan Pelancong traders get payment to relocate
By SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: All the 73 traders in Medan Pelancong near here received a windfall in the form of a “gratuity payment” to shift their business to other sites.
Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong said the amount received ranged from RM3,527 to as much as RM18,000.
Chang said the traders had earlier refused to accept the payment and were hoping for a higher “compensation” to move out.
“I believe some of them decided to take up the offer by Pasdec Corporations Sdn Bhd, which triggered others to follow suit.
“I am glad that the issue is now amicably resolved.
Pasdec allocated a sum of RM624,000 for the payment.
”This is a win-win situation and I hope the traders will be able to find a new location to continue their business,” he said when met here recently.
The traders were operating in shop units within the Medan Pelancong commercial square.
Chang said the majority were involved in the food business while the rest sold accessories, clothes, shoes, cosmetics, curtains and other services.
He said the land was jointly owned by Kuantan Municipal Council and Pasdec.
“Plans are in the pipeline to build a waterfront complex including a hotel and other recreational facilities.
“Both parties are still finalising the project plan,” he said.
On the payment, Chang said Pasdec emphasised that it was not compensation but a form of one-off gratuity payment.
He said the calculation was based on the individual trader’s rental payment, years and type of business.
“It was a good deal as the traders were not required to pay rent since January,” he added.
He also offered assistance to traders who needed help finding an alternative business site. Medan Pelancong has been in existence the last 36 years and will be officially closed down by the end of this year.
nazrey November 9th, 2009, 07:03 AM Better public transportation in Kuantan
Monday November 9, 2009
Story and photos by SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: The public transportation system in Kuantan will get a much needed lift from the Federal Government’s RM50mil allocation.
Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong said of the amount, RM46mil was for the construction of a new bus terminal near Wisma Belia in Indera Mahkota while the balance RM4mil would be used to upgrade the existing bus terminal near Stadium Darul Makmur.
“Commuters will enjoy better facilities and a more conducive environment once the new bus terminal is open. It is expected to be completed in 2012.
“The Kuantan Municipal Council is in the midst of negotiating with several bus companies to expand the town bus service and include routes to popular spots such as Teluk Chempedak,” he said after attending a dinner to mark the 43rd anniversary of Tow Moo Keong Temple in Jalan Haji Junid here.
Chang said if the proposal materialised, the public could enjoy an integrated system with buses servicing all major routes and neighbourhoods.
On a separate matter, he said records showed that a total of 413 national service trainees from Pahang had failed to report to the respective camps to undergo the compulsory three-month training.
He said under the NS community service order, defaulters could be ordered to do a minimum 240 hours of community work such as sweeping the streets, collecting rubbish, planting trees, washing drains and cleaning public amenities.
”Presently, juveniles convicted of petty crimes such as theft and vandalism are compelled to do community work,” he said, adding that temple committees who allowed NS defaulters to do community work in their premises could inform the relevant authorities such as the state Welfare Department.
On temple issues, Chang said the state government had set up a consultative committee to discuss land matters and related problems.
He added that the state government had acknowledged that temple premises could be used as a community centre for meetings to resolve public woes and for social gatherings to foster closer ties.
Meanwhile, Tow Moo Keong temple committee chairman Wong Choong Keong said the temple was in the midst of upgrading and refurbishing its premises.
He said a dinner held in conjunction with the end of Nine Emperor Gods Festival recently drew almost 2,000 devotees and their family members, the highest number at a gathering this year.

KUANTAN 11 Nov.

Daud.
Turut hadir, Ketua Pengarah Finas, Mohd. Mahyiddin Mustakim; Pengarah Eksekutif ECM, Datuk Sri Tew Kim Thin dan Pengarah ECM, Datuk Zailan Abd. Ghapar.

Pahang opting for biotech
Monday November 16, 2009
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
KUANTAN: Pahang has identified biotechnology as the next new source of state income, and will launch a strategic plan early next year.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said it was important to have a plan and build the necessary infrastructure first.
“It will involve a huge sum of money before any project kicks off. The various aspects of biotechnology must to be addressed properly,” he told reporters after opening a biotechnology seminar here recently.
Present were State Information, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin and State Economic Planning Unit director Datuk Mahadiah Mohamad.
Adnan said the plan would include guidelines or mechanisms governing the financial aspects of the industry.
“The strategic planning is about charting the future of Pahang’s biotechnology industry,” he said.
He noted that Pahang’s biggest potential was in medicine.
“The state is blessed with diverse plant life and there is bound to be some plants with medicinal properties that can be developed commercially,” he added.
Earlier in his speech, Adnan said that biotechnology ventures would involve the biodiversity in the environment.
“By venturing into biotechnology, we have to ensure that the biodiversity is properly managed and protected because, without biodiversity, there will be no biotechnology,” he said.
Mohd Sharkar, in his speech, said the biotechnology industry was considered as profitable.
He cited a company in the United States which harvested and processed the fruit of the acai palm, a Amazon rainforest species rich in antioxidants, into drinks and registered revenue of US$1.5bil (RM5bil) last year.
“How could an American company with no palm trees in its country harvest the fruits from the Amazon rainforest and process them into a drink to make that much money?
“In Malaysia, we have mangosteen and lime that are rich in antioxidants, but we are yet to turn them into commercial products like acai,” he said, adding that it was time for Malaysia to look into producing similar products.

6 lagi restoran RasaMas dibuka tahun depan
PETALING JAYA 16 Nov. - Kumpulan KFC Holdings Malaysia Bhd.
Pengarah Urusan KFCH, Jamaluddin Md.

Wednesday November 18, 2009
By SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: The latest Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd (GSC) multiplex costing RM16mil opened its doors to the public at a simple ceremony in East Coast Mall here recently.
This nine-screen multiplex is GSC’s 23rd in Malaysia and the second in Kuantan, complementing its five-screen multiplex in Berjaya Megamall.
Present to witness the event were Information, Communications, Culture and Arts Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohammed Mohd Daud, National Film Development Corporation director-general Mohd Mayhidin Mustakim, East Coast Mall (ECM) executive director Datuk Seri Tew Kim Thin, ECM director Datuk Zailan Abdul Ghapar and GSC general manager Irving Chee.
The mascot of the soon-to-be-released animated movie Astro Boy was invited to the stage for the launch together with the VIPs accompanied by performances by two lion dance troupes.
In his speech, Chee said the large investment in the structure, interior design and equipment showed the firm’s commitment towards bringing in the best cinema entertainment to Kuantan.
“GSC has been looking for an opportunity to bring in the latest multiplex concept to the east coast.
“With the outlet, our customers can enjoy a wider selection of movies,” he said, adding that by the second quarter of 2010, GSC would open an eight-screen multiplex in Suria Sabah Mall, Kota Kinabalu.
Chee said, despite the global economic recession, GSC had carried out expansion work at Alamanda in Putrajaya and IOI Mall in Puchong in addition to opening GSC Tropicana City in June this year. All three cinemas are in Selangor.
“We recently completed the first phase of renovations to the GSC Mid Valley (Kuala Lumpur) foyer to give it a fresh look in time for our 10th anniversary celebrations on Dec 2.
“We will install the first 3D digital projection system in the east coast before the opening of the much-awaited 3D blockbuster Avatar, a film by James Cameron,” he said.
He said that more than 15 3D movies were expected to be screened at GSC East Coast Mall Kuantan.
The 3D digital system costing RM400,000 is available at the group’s cinemas in Mid Valley, Berjaya Times Square and Pavilion KL in Kuala Lumpur, 1Utama in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and Gurney Plaza in Penang.
Guests at the launch were later treated to a special screening of the blockbuster 2012, with complimentary pop corn and soft drinks.

KUANTAN, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- A government supporter has asked the Pahang government to claim oil royalties from the federal government, claiming that the oil extracted in Terengganu waters could also come from areas in the state.
Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamad (BN-Padang Tengku), while debating the Pahang government's 2010 Budget in the State Assembly on Thursday, said a consulting firm should be appointed to study the matter in an effort to boost the state's revenue, which had suffered budget deficits for 12 consecutive years.
"Terengganu is given oil royalties, Kelantan gets compassionate payment, but why isn't Pahang given anything when it has the right (to receive royalties)," he said.
Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said told the assembly that the first phase of the upgrading and expansion project of Kuantan Port as a manufacturing hub and main logistics centre in the development of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), would start by end of 2010.
It would entail the construction of wave breakers and the widening and deepening of navigation routes.
He said the project would turn Kuantan Port into a commercial gateway between Malaysia and Asia-Pacific countries while some 50,000 job opportunities would be created by 2020.

“Pelaksanaan fasa satu akan bermula awal tahun depan dengan menyediakan infrastruktur asa tapak dan aktiviti pemasaran dan promosi. Taman ini dijangka mewujudkan 19,800 peluang pekerjaan,” katanya menjawab soalan Choong Siew Onn (DAP-Tras) pada sidang Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) di sini, semalam.
Adnan berkata, projek pembangunan Bandar Pelabuhan Kuantan pula membabitkan komponen kawasan peluasan pelabuhan, kelompok perindustrian seperti petrokimia, bio-fuel, minyak sawit, industri berat, zon bebas, kawasan kediaman, komersial, pelancongan dan rekreasi.

Story and photos by KRYSTLE LOW
KUANTAN: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair 2009 held here recently saw thousands of people making a beeline to book their dream holidays.
Opened by State Arts, Tourism and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif, the fair’s purpose was to raise awareness on the importance of patronising authorised travel agencies.
Shafik Fauzan said the agencies should arm the public with information about the various aspects of planning a holiday.
“For example, authorised agencies provide insurance coverage. If travellers purchase packages from unauthorised agents, they will have to bear the costs should anything untoward happen during the trip,” he said at the fair’s launch.
“Not many are aware of the consequences and we want to educate the public to prevent unnecessary problems,” he added.
Matta Pahang chairman Mohd Almizat Abu Halip said the fair presented to the public a selection of authorised travel agencies in the state.
“It is also a chance to promote Pahang as a tourist destination,” he said.
This year’s fair featured over 50 booths. The participating travel agencies had proposed that the organisers have a different theme every year.
aniqasyranie November 21st, 2009, 08:00 PM MALACCA: The historic city status as a Unesco World Heritage Site (WHS) has attracted a wide range of investors, including Lotus Corp Bhd that has invested RM3.5mil here to tap the lucrative service and tourism industry.
Chief executive officer Datuk R. Doraisingam Pillai said the company was playing its role to boost tourism here in line with the WHS status by providing better choices for avid locals and foreign moviegoers through its Lotus Five Star (LFS) cineplex.
“The opening of the cineplex here is also part of our company’s plan to expand our business as well as to provide patrons with the latest movies in the industry,” he told reporters after the opening of the RM3.5mil four-screen cineplex in Mahkota Parade yesterday.
Doraisingam (left) and LFS director Garuna Murthee at the launching of the LFS cineplex in Mahkota Parade.
The number of tourists to Malacca is expected to hit 7.4 million this year, generating some RM4bil in revenue.
Meanwhile, Doraisingam said the company was likely to add four normal screens and a 3D screen here by end of next year, depending on response.
Besides Malacca, LFS will soon be operating in Kampar, Ipoh, the Klang Valley, Kulim and Mentakab with the Kulim Cineplex scheduled for opening on Nov 27. Located on the second floor of Mahkota Parade, the cineplex can accommodate 645 patrons.

aniqasyranie December 2nd, 2009, 06:39 PM Bukit Gambang Water Park offers a wholesome family outing
Story and photos by SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: The Bukit Gambang Water Park is recommended during this school holidays for a day of fun and excitement for the whole family.
The RM40mil water park – a component of Bukit Gambang Resort City – officially opened its doorS to the public in July this year.
Child's fantasy: The aqua play structure at the water park.
Its sales manager Louis Ong said that all 578 accommodation units in the resort’s Caribbean Bay Suites were available complete with a club house, gymnasium, jacuzzi, infinity pool, steam room and MICE (meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition) facilities.
Ong said the accommodation comprised 140 studio suites, 18 deluxe suites and 420 family suites in seven blocks.
“The units were sold to locals and foreigners including Singaporeans and leased to us.
“Investors are assured of rental returns for five years free of furniture, fittings and maintenance charges.
“Due to the overwhelming response, another 400 units are being built and will be completed over the next two years,” he told Star Metro in an interview.
Ong said the water park was slowly but surely gaining popularity particularly among those residing in the east coast states, Johor and the Klang Valley.
Family fun: Guests enjoying a horse-carriage ride.
He said the number of visitors was rising and the highest number registered so far was on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri in September with over 5,000 visitors.
“Based on this trend, we are confident of hitting the 500,000-visitor target in the first year,” he said, adding that, during the mid-year Matta Fair, they chalked up sales of RM90,000.
Other activities in high demand were the ATV (all terrain vehicle) fun ride, jungle trekking, pony rides, paintball warzone and target shooting.
Ong said that visitors could use the tram and horse-carriage rides to and from the Caribbean Bay Suites for a minimal fee. There are other fun activities for children such as sand art, air brush tattoo and DIY handicraft.
To keep guests occupied in the evening, magic shows and movie screenings were held free of charge at the multipurpose hall, he added.
Meanwhile, general manager Edmond Quah said the resort was planned to be the first and largest water theme park in the east coast.
Cool sensation: The journey of ice around a tunnel at the Penguin Island.
He said the water park was one of the main components of the resort estimated to cost RM1bil in total investments and expected to be completed over eight years.
“This forest resort over 202ha will be rolled out in stages and is poised to make Pahang, particularly Kuantan, a prime family holiday destination.
“The first phase comprising the Caribbean Bay Suites, water park and active academy team-building centre cost about RM140mil.
“Under the second and third phases, we will introduce the adventure park, forest park, east-coast bazaar, global heritage and heritage square.
“In the later stages, the public can look forward to themed accommodation namely Andaman Bay, Arabian Bay, Mediterranean Beach and Hawaiian Beach,” he said.
Quah said that each parcel of the project would have its own identity and the distinctive logo of a bird exclusive to its architectural and thematic concept.
For example, he said the Caribbean Bay Suites featured the toucan bird which was native to the tropics while the water park would adopt the fun-loving and happy-go-lucky penguin.
The water park has four main components – Coco Beach, Penguin Island, Tree-top Hill Slides and Garden Terrace.
The main attraction of Coco Beach is a wave pool with a 1km man-made tropical beach.
The first-of-its-kind aqua play structure, glacier river family ride and journey of ice around a tunnel are the highlights at Penguin Island, in addition to the family river raft, galaxy, canopy and crystal slides.
Companies can use the Garden Terrace to hold telematches or private functions.
“In short, not all water parks are created equal. We strive to be the best in the east coast and Malaysia and hope to live up to our tagline Leisure At Its Best,” Quah said.
Presently, the park is offering a promotional rate of RM19.90 for adults and RM12.90 for children.
Its operation hours are 10am to 6pm daily throughout the school holidays.
For more information or reservations, contact its sales office at 09-548 8000 or visit its website at www.bgrc.com.my.

aniqasyranie December 22nd, 2009, 05:24 AM Kuantan resort holds festive drive to help children’s centre
KUANTAN: Swiss Garden Resort and Spa here has launched the Get A Teddy charity campaign for those wishing to do something meaningful this festive season.
The resort’s marketing communications co-ordinator Hafizul Akmal Abdul Jalil said the campaign was mooted to provide assistance to the less fortunate in society.
He said the beneficiary for the campaign this year was the Handicapped and Mentally Retarded Children’s Centre in Alor Akar here.
“Members of the public can lend a helping hand by purchasing a cute teddy bear for RM10 at our resort.
“In this way, we can lessen the home’s financial burden and enable the residents to celebrate Christmas and New Year more joyfully,” he said.
Hafizul Akmal said the proceeds from the sale would be channelled to the home which provided shelter and care for 31 residents aged between 15 and 54 years.
The centre’s supervisor James Perumal said that generous Malaysians from all walks of life donated selflessly to help lessen the centre’s burden over the past 12 years.
“Only 12 of the residents pay for the service. The family members of the rest are either too poor or had abandoned them,” he said.
The centre which opened on May 19, 1997, has seven paid staff members, with three of them staying in to tend to the residents’ daily needs.
“We hope that members of the public can support us so that we can continue to care for the residents,” he said.

aniqasyranie December 23rd, 2009, 04:34 AM KUANTAN: Tucked away at the side of the road leading into Kampung Cherating Lama near here is a rustic old house that, 24 years ago, hosted the then Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the opening of the handicraft centre.
A plaque at the entrance commemorates the occasion on Nov 15, 1985.
The centre, owned by Zaharah Md Amin and her husband Mohd Yusof Jaafar, specialises in weaved mats, hats, bags and other souvenirs made of dried pandanus leaves or mengkuang.
Well displayed: Some end products on sale at the centre.
Zaharah, 54, remembers the day when a young Najib arrived with a big entourage. The whole village was a hive of activities.
“It’s over two decades now, but it seems like it happened just yesterday. My husband and I look forward to meeting him (Najib) again, if there’s an opportunity.
“Business is a bit slow and I hope a return visit by him will bring more customers,” she told StarMetro.
Good finish: Mohd Yusof showing one of the end products
Zaharah said the centre had a steady stream of visitors, including tourists from Europe, Australia, the United States and South Korea, who came to watch her weave.
She gets heavy bookings for Hari Raya Aidilfitri and weddings.
A bag took about a week to complete while a mat required two to three days, said Zaharah.
She said her husband attended to guests and looked after two of their grandchildren.
Mohd Yusof, 67, said among the VIP visitors was former Regional and Rural Development Minister Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib.
He hoped the authorities could widen the road and provide proper parking space for visitors at the centre.
“Sometimes, groups come in tour buses, but due to the lack of parking space, they cannot stay long and take their time to browse.
“Many are keen to watch the art of weaving, but have to leave due to unavailable parking space,” he said.
The couple has five children aged between 17 and 35 years, and nine grandchildren.
Zaharah developed an interest in weaving and learned from her mother Teh Ahmad when she was just 13.
However, none of her children are interested in the intricate art to carry on the tradition.
“Young people do not have the patience to learn the art. I cannot force them, although I regret not cultivating the interest in them when they were younger,” she said.
The centre is open from 9am to 5pm daily.
Groups can contact Zaharah at 09-581 9290 to arrange for a weaving demonstration.

KUANTAN 29 Dis.
Turut hadir, Ahli Parlimen Paya Besar, Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail; Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Lepar, Mohd.

aniqasyranie December 31st, 2009, 04:29 AM Bright future in store for Pahang, the PM’s home state
KUANTAN: This year was undoubtedly meaningful for the people of Pahang, particularly Pekan folks as they witnessed the swearing-in of the country’s sixth Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Najib, the Pekan MP, took charge of the country after Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi relinquished the premiership in April.
Within months of Najib’s elevation, several key projects were launched namely the Tanjung Agas Oil, Gas and Maritime Industrial Park and Malaysia’s first Special Economic Zone covering Kertih, Chukai, Kuantan Port City, Kuantan, Gambang and Pekan.
Into the cyberworld: Najib checking an Internet connection at the Pekan Resource Centre.
The two initiatives were among a list of infrastructure projects earmarked under the East Coast Economic Region masterplan to develop Pahang and bring it on par with its more-developed neighbouring states.
The changing of guard even stirred the interest of Singapore minister mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who led a high-profile delegation on a visit that included the Kuantan and Pekan districts.
The development boom continued for Pahang with the commencement of direct flights from Singapore to the state capital on July 22. This helped to spur the tourism sector and increase tourist arrivals, thus meeting the state’s target of 8.5 million visitors this year.
Kuantan was also chosen to be the first urban centre in the country to get open access fibre-to-the-home high-speed broadband facilities involving 2,000 homes and offices in the initial roll-out.
This, coupled with the opening of the Bukit Gambang Water Park, Pahang is poised to attract more investors in 2010.
Inland beach: The wave pool at the Bukit Gambang Water Park.
Socially, Pahang was largely trouble-free throughout the year, even the much anticipated year-end floods fizzled out without much damage.
However, two separate drowning incidents a week apart in early December claimed the lives of four siblings and three college students in Rompin and Kuantan.
On the local council front, a High Court decision sent ripples through the local government system as the landmark ruling stated that the local government did not have the right to prosecute anyone, and such an action would contravene the Federal Constitution.
The Temerloh Municipal Council took mini-market owner Subrama*niam Gopal to court for operating without a licence.
Subramaniam was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal and has since been charged again by the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
The case is pending amid concerns raised by Sabai assemblyman Datuk M. Davendran over selective prosecution by authorities.
Kuantan is also set to re-apply for city status after its earlier application to the Housing and Local Government Ministry was put on hold at the request of Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
Adnan had wanted to see improvements and higher efficiency before giving his blessings for the town to be declared the 13th city of Malaysia.
It is also reliably learnt that Adnan did not want the people to feel the pinch with an increase in assessment rates once the town’s municipality status was upgraded to that of a city.
Kuantan councillor Andy Chiew Yoke Theng said the municipality had met the requirements to be accorded city status and it was a matter of time before the elevation took place.
“The council is doing a good job in maintaining cleanliness, approving licences and resolving public complaints,” he said.
Latest statistics show that, of 3,918 complaints received, the council had resolved 91.2%, the bulk being clearing and trimming of trees (735 complaints) and drainage problems (599).
“There is room for improvement, but I believe Kuantan already has the hallmarks of a city,” said Chiew, adding that the town was envied as among the cleanest, but had since lost its reputation and measures should be taken to regain that fame.
All in, things are looking bright for Pahang, especially the royal town of Pekan, in the next 12 months.
aniqasyranie January 4th, 2010, 04:28 AM Chinese railroad company eyes projects in M'sia
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 3, 2010): Malaysia will work with Tangshan Railway Vehicle Compang, which rolled out the China-made bullet trains late last month, to carry out three rail projects estimated to cost RM1 billion in the country.
According to a report in Nanyang Siang Pau today, the projects are a track for magnetic levitation (maglev) trains between George Town and Butterworth and two high-speed rail links -- between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru and between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan -- that allow trains to reach 350km per hour.
The report said Tangshan Raiway Vehicle Company, a unit of China CNR Corporation Ltd, has been invited by MRailways International Sdn Bhd, to explore rail opportunities in Malaysia.
Sources said MRails has received a letter of authorisation from Tangshan Railway Vehicle last month for the proposed maglev rail project in Penang on a joint-venture basis.
Apart from the George Town-Butterworth maglev rail project, Tangshan Railway Vehicle also intends to undertake the Kuala Lumpur-Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan high-speed rail projects.
The two high-speed rail links being planned are similar to the 1,068km Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway that went into service last month.
Dubbed the bullet trains of China, the trains operating the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway can reach 350km per hour.
The three projects, if implemented, can be completed in three to five years.

PEKAN: The first phase of a RM258mil project to build wave breakers at two estuaries of the Pahang River here will be completed in October next year.
Drainage and Irrigation Department director-general Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman said straight wave breakers were being built over a 2km stretch in the northern part of the area, and curved ones over a 1.2km stretch in the southern part.
“The project, which commenced in November 2008, will also encompass dredging works to deepen the estuaries and shipping lane at Pulau Syed Hassan,” Ahmad Husaini told reporters after a working visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to the site of the project being undertaken by Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) in Kuala Pahang, here, yesterday.
Najib was also given a closed-door briefing by MRCB officials on the project.
Ahmad Husaini said besides the wave breakers, they were also building an embankment at Pulau Syed Hassan and a temporary channel for the estuary at the northern part of Tanjung Agas and the island.
He said the first phase of the project would also involve building a flood-mitigating embankment along the beach to protect Pekan from flooding and to stabilise the river banks.
According to him, the project was to overcome the serious problems of flooding and sedimentation at the estuaries for safe entry and exit of vessels.
“It also provides protection for ships, ferries and boats from strong and high waves, so that they can safely berth during the monsoon, besides improving the socio-economic condition of the local people.”
He said the second phase of the project would be implemented under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Facilitating biotech in Pahang
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
roslina@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: Pahang is ready to roll out its biodiversity and biotechnology action plan set to be implemented over 12 years.
The plan will facilitate access to scientific and technical personnel in all relevant disciplines and fast-track certain aspects of research and development as well as bio-enterprises.
It will also provide recommendations on sub-sections that should be emphasised.
The Pahang government commissioned University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) to draw up the action plan which took six months to complete.
UMP research dean Prof Dr Jailani Salihon said that Pahang had the potential to succeed in the biotechnology industry.
“India, for example, was nowhere on the biotechnology map 20 years ago.
“Today, virtually every big player in biotechnology has a manufacturing plant in that country. The reason for this is that India developed the required research infrastructure and human resource base and kept labour costs low,” he said in an interview here recently.
He added that the biotechnology industry was now worth US$60bil (RM204bil) globally.
As for Malaysia, the Government drew up the National Biotechnology Policy that set the objective of creating 280,000 jobs, establishing 100 biotechnology companies and generating RM270bil in revenue by 2020, he said.
This reflected the potential of the industry if the plan was worked out accordingly, he added.
Prof Jailani said that Malaysia needed to move up the value chain in providing human resources, facilities and support systems to justify its higher costs compared to India and China.
“Currently, the incentives are not enough,” he noted.
On Pahang, he said its human resources, facilities and support systems were insufficient to cope with the expected development.
The presence and awareness of biotechnology were low and no major spin-offs had come out of federal-funded institutions and private-sector research laboratories, he pointed out.
“There should be incentives for people, since biotechnology relies on knowledge and innovation, and policies must be put in place to encourage a culture of innovation among the youth.
“We have to redirect the career paths of young graduates from seeking employment to setting up small companies at university incubators and developing new biotechnology products, processes or services,” added Prof Jailani.

aniqasyranie January 11th, 2010, 08:59 AM Development projects show results in Kuantan
By SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: Kuantan has seen significant changes, with many developments and infrastructure projects carried out as planned in the past year, an assemblyman here said.
Teruntum representative Chang Hong Seong said the notable ones were the improved drainage system in Jalan Darat Makbar and the upgrading of bridges across Sungai Galing.
“For many years, residents in the two areas have been badly affected by flash floods during the year-end monsoon season.
“The projects have successfully mitigated the impact and frequency of such occurrences,” he told Star Metro.
Chang said that several new sports and recreational facilities had been completed and would be handed over in stages to residents in the respective neighbourhoods over the next few months.
Among the projects were a new enclosed basketball court in Kubang Buaya costing RM500,000, multi sports courts in Kampung Selamat and Alor Akar worth RM145,000 each and a new community hall in Kampung Selamat (RM100,000).
Others include the building of a community hall and volleyball mini gym in Seri Kuantan (RM100,000), upgrading of community halls in Galing Besar, Kampung Jawa and Kampung Tengah (RM50,000 each), refurbished futsal court in Kampung Tengah and a new exercise site in Taman Gelora (RM40,000 each).
Chang said that numerous sports events and competitions were organised by the newly-established Teruntum Recreational Club with the support of the Youth and Sports Ministry.
“The futsal, volleyball, badminton and basketball competitions received encouraging participation from Kuantan folks and we hope to continue these beneficial activities this year with the main target group being youths aged between 16 and 28 years.
“I will continue to seek federal and state allocations to carry out new developments for the benefit of my constituents in line with the Kuantan Municipal Council masterplan,” he said.
Chang urged the people to provide feedback on ways to improve the standard of living as he was compiling information and suggestions from local community leaders and village headmen.
He pledged to allow room for regular discussions to enhance infrastructure and recreational facilities in his constituency and continue supporting various non-governmental organisations.
“A new year is always exciting as it provides a fresh start with new enthusiasm. I believe 2010 will be another challenging year with new opportunities and demands to meet.
“I will continue to be service-oriented and strive to do my best to resolve problems raised promptly and amicably,” he said.
aniqasyranie January 14th, 2010, 11:55 AM Pahang mohon RM65 juta
MARAN 13 Jan.

Good to see the Teruntum complex bustling with people again, since the opening of the BIG Cinemas...
However, to make the tower look more modern, the owners should at least consider cladding it in blue (something like the PKNS Tower in PJ) and maybe even completing that top floor, which looks like on-hold... Of course this will be an expensive venture for them! :D

Out-of-towners a menace
By SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
Driving around Kuantan town from one end to the other is a breeze, unlike the traffic madness which Klang Valley motorists have to endure daily.
There’s hardly any traffic congestion except perhaps when one is passing the 3km stretch of Jalan Beserah which has seven traffic lights.
However, traffic volume does pick up slightly on Fridays and Saturdays as those from other states make stopovers in Kuantan to shop for groceries and hunt for cheap bargains since it is a weekend for them.
Their presence is most welcomed by traders and the Pahang government as it helps to boost economic activities, but what annoys most locals are the out-of-towners who overtake dangerously, commit tailgating and flout traffic rules wantonly.
The authorites should put a stop to such antics and make these drivers realise that the pace in Kuantan is slower and more relaxing.
A problem: The road along Jalan Stadium and the wet market in Kuantan being converted into a temporary bus stop.
Kuantan has seen much development over the past few years with new icons such as the East Coast Mall and Putra Square, in addition to the upgrading of its main attraction - the Teluk Chempedak beach, just 5km from town.
Other new business centres are mushrooming in busy areas along Jalan Beserah, Air Putih, Indera Mahkota and Jalan Tun Ismail.
Never mind that supply of such shoplots is more than demand, at least the construction industry is moving steadily and Pahang is catching up with its more developed and rich neighbouring states.
A better public transportation system and new bus terminal are in the offing to entice more visitors and spur further growth.
The Federal Government had approved an allocation of RM50mil to build a new bus terminal near Wisma Belia in Indera Mahkota for inter-state buses. Of the amount, RM4mil will be used to upgrade the existing bus terminal near Stadium Darul Makmur.
Once the new bus terminal is completed in four years, the existing terminal - Terminal Makmur - would be coverted into a town bus station, Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong told StarMetro.
Presently, the town bus station in Jalan Besar had been relocated to pave the way for a proposed waterfront complex, including a hotel and recreational facilities.
The planning seems good but there is one nagging problem - part of the two-way road along Jalan Stadium has been cordoned off and turned into a temporary bus station for town buses to facilitate the relocation.
As a result, vehicles passing through the stretch has to be diverted into the wet market area (to bypass the closure), causing a bigger jam as traders will be unloading their goods while customers are in the area.
Motorists are greatly inconvenienced as they are diverted and get stuck in unnecessary jams.
Besides, the closure of the stretch saw at least a dozen parking bays no longer available to the public, while temporary licences to set up bazaars during national events held adjacent to the open field, could no longer be issued to benefit traders.
It does not make economical sense to close a road and convert it into a bus station unless there is absolutely no alternative.
Chang said the site was found to be most suitable “at the moment” as it was the most strategic and convenient spot for the public.
“Nearby food traders are not complaining as they are enjoying better business,” he said, adding that he would propose to the local council to search for other possible sites if there were mounting complaints.
This was not the first time that the local council carried out plans to change the traffic flow.
Many roads around town and busy areas were turned into one-way without consulting the people. A one-month trial last year which disallowed the U-turn along the busy Jalan Beserah showed that the move would not work.
Flabbergasted motorists complained and the U-turn was permitted again.
Former councillor in charge of traffic and technical committee Ng Fook Heng, who was one of the most vocal against the “no U-turn” proposal, admitted that no prior consultation was made with community leaders or resident groups before any change in traffic flow was introduced.
“It was proposed by officials who went to the ground to observe the traffic.
”The problem is they must observe the traffic situation on various occasions and not during one particular time,” he said.
The local council has to take into consideration public views when shaping their policies, in line with the Government’s slogan of “People’s First, Performance Now.”

KUANTAN: The Pahang state government has given the green light, the 350km/h high speed railroad project is expected to kick off this May, the construction site will be stationed in Royal town of Tanjung Agas in Pekan, the whole project is estimated to complete in 3 to 5 years.
President of MRails International Dato Jayakumar confidently told to the press: “Once after this RM1,000,000,000 project started, this will bring explosive dominoes effect to the economic development of our country.
"Nanyang Siang Pau" exclusive report of this issue the other day said that the MRails International Co. joint venture with Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. of China to carry on three Maglev and high speed railroad projects amounting RM1,000,000,000 in our country, these projects included Penang - Butterworth (Maglev train), as well as two projects of Kuala Lumpur - Kuantan and the Kuala Lumpur – Johore Bahru high-speed railroad project.
Components are sourced locally
Pahang state menteri besar Dato Seri Adnan Yakob has agreed the Kuala Lumpur – Kuantan high speed railroad project in a briefing session. By using a piece of 100 ekar land in Tanjung Agas as the equipment assembling site for these 3 projects, components required for the Maglev and high speed railroad will be supplied and assembled by local company.
He and Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. management inspected the Tanjung Agas site on Wednesday, this followed by a meeting session with Adnan Yakob in Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kuantan and an interview with “Nanyang Siang Pau” reporter.
The MRails International Co. will submit a proposal regarding Kuala Lumpur – Kuantan high speed railroad project to Adnan Yakob in a short time.
He declared that his company had met former premier Tun Mahatir and PM, Dato Sri Najib about the Maglev and high speed railroad project, after obtaining blessing from the latter, he and the Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. management then visited Adnan Yakob on Wednesday.
The Pahang state government assured giving full coordination
Jayakumar said that the state government had assured to give full coordination in the transportation aspect. Once the high speed railroad project is completed, traveling time between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan is expected to take only 45 minutes.
The Chinese government thought that Malaysia is suitable to construct the high-speed railroad
Jayakumar said again that the Chinese government believed that Malaysia is an ideal country to be a center of Maglev and high speed train.
He said instead providing 100% financing, Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. will supply the world class railroad technology, but the human resources aspect will be operated and the managed by the MRails International Co.
“Maglev and the high-speed train is a high quality, the high tech transportation, they are believed to be able to relieve Malaysian's transportation problem”

Pahang mahu kerajaan Persekutuan pertimbang permohonan MSC
KUANTAN 30 Jan.
Hadir sama Ketua Pengarah Unit Perancang Ekonomi (EPU), Datuk Noriyah Ahmad.

Pahang broadband project to start soon
2010/02/01
By Alina Simonnews@nst.com.my
PEKAN: The Pahang government's Multimedia Super Corridor initiative to provide open access high-speed broadband connection to 30,000 homes and offices in Kuantan is expected to start soon.
State Information, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said the project, which will offer direct dedicated fibre optic connection to homes and offices within the network area in Kuantan, would start by the first quarter of the year.
The project will be carried out by Jalenas Sdn Bhd, which is jointly owned by state-owned Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd and Bumiraya Resources Sdn Bhd, a privately-funded company.
Sharkar said the project was in line with the government's target of increasing broadband penetration by 50 per cent by end of the year.
"Jalenas is not competing but, instead, complementing the existing service providers by providing high-tech infrastructure to homes and offices.
"Think of Jalenas as providing the highway and the service providers serving end-users with various modes of transportation.
"We will provide more than 30,000 connections to homes and offices in Kuantan and will initially provide between 30 and 100 Mbps bi-directional bandwidth per subscriber.
"Many service providers have expressed interest in using our network," he said after attending the launching of Pekan Digital 1Malaysia programme by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Saturday.
Sharkar said Jalenas was keen to move fast and prove the capability of the network since it planned to expand the service nationwide.
"We hope to complete the first phase of the project by end of the year and hope to attract service providers to make use of our network."
He said the open-access model had been implemented successfully in many European countries and the United States while the project was still in the planning stages in Australia and Singapore.

are they serious ? feasible ke? if they make penang - kl line then ok lah, but kuantan - kl? kuantan's population pun bukan besar mana.
local population is not the key to see if it work but how much the whole region market it can serve. ktn is the gateway to the main east coast cities. the plan to have hsr stop at ktn is so that the commuters can use other transport mode to reach final destination quicker instead taking a long travelling across the pahang hilly state.
but none of the news statement is from the pahang mb or najib mouth, so this must be another lame news done by a part time reporter looking for quick money. the pahang mb knew it wont work well but he kept silent in the back in the pretending that the state govt is bringing a huge transformation of changes to the locals but its all the malays love to call sandiwara.

Jalenas to score a first in high-speed broadband
By SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: Jalur Lebar Nasional Sdn Bhd (Jalenas) will roll out the country’s first open access fiber-to-the-home high-speed broadband in Kuantan by the first quarter of this year, said High Speed Broadband Technology Sdn Bhd (HSBT) chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin.
He said under the first phase, Kuantan would have about 30,000 connections to homes and offices with a bandwidth from 30Mbps to 100Mbps per subscriber.
“We are in the final stages of setting up the infrastructure and hope to link up 30,000 households in Kuantan by the end of this year. It’s a tough job but we are optimistic to achieve this target and will spread our wings to other states in stages,” he said at the launching of digital Pekan 1Malaysia by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Pekan recently.
Mohd Sharkar, who is also an executive councillor in Pahang, said Jalenas was backed by technology provided by Ericsson and PacketFront, and that their staff have been stationed in Malaysia in the last five months to work on the project.
“We are going to do it very slowly starting with Kuantan as it is a private financing project and as such, there must not be any mistake. Our aim is to provide the last mile infrastructure to companies seeking to deliver their services through high-speed broadband,” he said.
On competition from Telekom Malaysia, Mohd Sharkar said it would be a healthy rivalry and that both parties must complement each other as the Government wanted Malaysia to achieve 50% high-speed broadband penetration by the end of this year.
“There must be concerted effort by all parties such as Jalenas, Telekom, Maxis and DiGi to achieve the target in line with the national agenda. Jalenas will not provide broadband services to consumers. That is the job of the service providers,” he stressed.
On the number of service providers which had linked up with Jalenas, Mohd Sharkar said it was still premature to reveal the details, but added that many service providers, both local and foreign, were interested.

Kuantan falls short of festive decor
By SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: The Pahang government does not provide allocations for festive decorations in public areas during major festivals, an assemblyman here revealed.
Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming said, all these years, there was no budget for assemblymen to put up decorative items.
“Shopping centres, hotels and supermarkets carry out their own initiatives in conjunction with major festivities to beautify their premises and attract customers.
“On the state’s part, there is just not enough money as the poor and needy are given priority.
“As such, the private sector plays an important role in creating the festive atmosphere during the major celebrations,” he said.
Pang was asked to comment on the lack of decorations in Kuantan to usher in the Year of the Tiger which is just around the corner.
“We hope the private sector can help.
“The slow start may be due to the gloomy economic situation. When the economy is good, this is not an issue,” he said.
Pang said that Kuantan was unlike places with a historical background such as Penang and Malacca, and Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur for which the local authorities allocated a budget for beautification to attract tourists.
He said that Kuantan had no plans to set up a Chinatown although the Air Putih area had the highest number of Chinese residents.
“If we want to put up lanterns, I suggest that all residential and business areas with a majority of Chinese to be included, not just Air Putih.
“Otherwise, Chinese in areas such as Jalan Datuk Wong Ah Jang, Jalan Haji Ahmad, Jalan Galing and Bukit Sekilau will be upset,” he said.

I think this is really sad. If you drive around town, you'd see 2 miserable strings of lanterns on the flag pole at the padang infront of Teruntum Complex and another 4 rows of lanterns along the whole mile of Jalan Mahkota. This is so pathetic. In my opinion, it is better if they don't put up anything at all than letting people commenting about the half heartedly put up decor. This is the same for all festivals including Hari Raya.

Is the state government so poooor? My goodness! This is a state that has offshore oil, superb islands for tourists and even boasts the only casinos in all of Malaysia, and the government has no money and can't even spend a few ringgit decorating the capital city? That is so laughable. I say in our country, we probably have a budding business community but a 3rd-class government holding everyone down.
aniqasyranie February 11th, 2010, 08:53 AM Subsidi air diteruskan
Oleh YUSRI SAHAT
utusanpahang@utusan.com.my
KUANTAN 10 Feb.
Hadir sama, Pengarah JBA, Datuk Mohd. Zahari Md. Isa.

Kuantan moving gaily to welcome the Tiger Year
Story and photos by SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: The air of festivity is in Kuantan with most shopping complexes and supermarkets colourfully decorated with Chinese New Year paraphernalia.
The town’s festive mood has picked up momentum with the celebration just days away.
Shopping complexes such as East Coast Mall, Kuantan Parade and Berjaya Megamall have decorated their entrances and concourse areas with pussy willows and red lanterns, among the numerous other auspicious items.
Busy time: Shoppers choosing flowers and other paraphernalia to usher in the Chinese New Year in Kuantan recently.
A host of programmes and activities have been lined up for shoppers including special discounts, contests, lucky draws, cultural performances and lion dances.
Locals working outstation are expected to return over the weekend for reunion dinners.
As the first day of the lunar new year falls on Valentine’s Day, hotels such as Swiss-Garden Resort & Spa, Legend Resort Cherating and Hyatt Regency Kuantan have launched Chinese New Year-Valentine’s food promotions to entice guests.
Spreading the cheer: The Kuantan Parade concourse decorated with lanterns.
Most beach hotels in Cherating and Balok are fully booked for the holidays.
Temples have joined in the decoration fervour with Thean Hou Temple and Wan Fo Tien Temple putting up pretty lanterns to welcome devotees.
Many people were still busy doing last-minute shopping in preparation for the Year of the Tiger.
Housewife Elaine Koh, 37, said she usually waited until the last days to shop as there would be plenty of discounts.
She advised members of the public to compare prices before buying as every ringgit counted.
Ushering in CNY: The Thean Hou temple in Jalan Bukit Ubi decorated with red lanterns.
“Saving a few ringgit on groceries counts in this present economic situation,” she said, adding that consumers had benefited from the price war between hypermarkets.
Loo Yen Peng, 30, completed her shopping a week earlier to avoid the crowds at hypermarkets.
She said, besides Chinese looking for bargains, other Malaysians seized the opportunity to purchase offer items.
“This is the spirit of 1Malaysia with one race celebrating and the others joining in,” she said.

As for Georgetown, that city is actually absorbed into a one island administrative organisation, Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP). Although, through history Georgetown really is a city...(see TYW's signature)

aniqasyranie February 23rd, 2010, 05:17 AM Barakah desak MPK batal Pesta Pantai Balok
KUANTAN 22 Feb. - Badan Gerak Dakwah Pahang (Barakah) mendesak Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan (MPK) membatalkan penganjuran Pesta Pantai Balok yang diadakan bersamaan dengan tarikh Maulidur Rasul pada Jumaat ini.
Penolong Setiausaha Barakah, Mohd.

aniqasyranie February 26th, 2010, 07:59 AM Cherating Beckons Water Ski Enthusiasts
By Norehan Saleh
KUANTAN, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The panoramic Cherating beach in Pahang is increasingly becoming a haven for water ski sports.
Since 2007, the beach fronting South China SEA has been the venue for the "Billabong Pro Am Occy's Grom Comp" wave surfing competition for local and foreign participants.
The event is normally held during the end or early part of the year when the monsoon season helps to create high waves up to five meters needed for wave surfing.
The third edition was held from 8-10 Jan this year with 110 participants from nine nations - Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, United States, Egypt and Australia.
FIVE CATEGORIES
The event was held with the cooperation of the Kuantan Town Council, Fraser's Hill Development Cooperation and the Pahang State Tourism Action Committee.
The event manager, Tunku Mohd Khairil Tunku Ibrahim noted that the competition had five categories Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms, Masters and Bodyboard.
"The number of participants has been increasing year after year with 67 in the inaugural year, 88 in the second year and 110 in the third year and this is an encouraging sign," he said.
The three day competition also included a 'surfing clinic' conducted by professional surfers from Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia where visitors could sign up for surfing training conducted by professional surfers.
OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM FOREIGN SURFERS
Meanwhile, the President of the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) Datuk Azizan Ahmad noted that it is time for local surfers to pick up surfing skills from their foreign counterparts, especially the professionals.
Wave surfing is increasingly gaining popularity and the competition here provides opportunity for serious local surfers to show their skills.
"They can go up to the international stage if they train earnestly and they can use this platform to show their prowess," he said.
Apart from that, he said, the sport would put Cherating in the international map and attract more local and foreign tourists.
"This not only helps hotel, resorts and chalets record higher occupancy rates but also helps to boost the local economy," he said.
THOSE WHO RECORDED PODIUM FINISH
In the 2010 tournament, Hussain Areef@Iboo from Maldives emerged champion in the men's open category followed by Esquievel Rogelio from the Philippines and the third placing went to Mohd Didaqt Musaddiq from Malaysia.
In the women's open category Yudi Andika of Indonesia was first, the second Cheryl Tang of Singapore and the third is again from the host nation, Brenda Lee.
Esquievel Rogelio was also the champion in the Groms category, the second being another Malaysian Mohd Nazrin Nasruddin and the third Mohd Didaqt.
In the Masters category, Malaysians Azman Abdul Razak and Raymond Chong won the first and second placing respectively while the third placing went to Aaron Wright of the United States.
Meanwhile in the Bodyboard category, Ali Khushruwan Ahmad Ali of Maldives emerged champion while Waqi and Ahmad Rusyuddin, both from Malaysia, were in the second and third placing respectively.
The champions in each category received goods worth RM3000 sponsored by Billabong.

Pahang as a food haven
By NIK NAIZI HUSIN
metrose@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: Plans are afoot to turn food outlets in Pahang serving traditional food into the state’s tourism partners.
State Arts, Tourism and Women’s Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif said the state planned to recognise the outlets as tourism icons in the food category.
“They will be given a certificate by the state along with some incentives,” he said.
Pahang was visited for the traditional food it had to offer and tourists did not mind spending on food, he said.
“They are not particular about whether the outlet is a stall or an air-conditioned restaurant.
“They do not mind paying as long as the food is delicious and unique to the locality,” he said, adding that a nice view of a river or beach helped as well.
“For example, there is a place called Tanjung Lumpur just five minutes’ drive from Kuantan town. Across the bridge there is a spot that has become popular because of stalls offering a variety of food.
“It is known as a haven for seafood like keropok lekor, otak otak, satar and fresh fish prepared in many styles including steamed and grilled,” said Shafik Fauzan after opening the Akop Ikan Patin House restaurant which specialises in freshwater fish here.
He said the restaurant opened its first outlet near Sungai Kuantan a few years ago and business had grown despite it being partly hidden by buildings in Jalan Besar.
“This is because of its speciality fishes like krai, lampan and patin besides fish fries and other tasty dishes. This first warong (stall) has become hugely popular,” he said.
Shafik Fauzan also announced plans for a restaurant complex offering a selection of Pahang’s traditional food.
He said the complex estimated at RM5mil would be a one-stop centre built under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Mydin to build its biggest hypermart in Kota Baru
Published: 2010/03/04
MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Bhd, the operator of the locally-owned Mydin wholesale stores and hypermarkets, plans to build its biggest hypermarket in the country at the Tunjong new township in Kota Baru soon.
The RM200 million hypermarket, expected to be completed by 2012 will be built on a 7.2 hectare site about five kilometres from the town centre.
Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said the Kelantan government was in the final phase of acquiring the land for the project from its owners and the ground works were expected to start in May.
"It will be our biggest hypermarket in Malaysia to date and will have 2,000 parking bays. We have decided to build a big hypermarket in Kelantan because we have a large piece of land for the project and also because we believe there is a demand for it," he told reporters in Kota Baru on Tuesday night.
Ameer Ali was speaking after a special prayer led by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat for its latest hypermarket in Kubang Kerian.
Mydin also targets to set up hypermarkets in Johor Baru, Ipoh, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu by as early as next year, he said.
On its business, Ameer Ali said the economic recession has proven to be a blessing in disguise for the company, as revenue swelled to RM1.3 billion last year from RM1.1 billion in 2008.
"The recession has led to more consumers frequenting our outlets as we offer competitive prices for our goods," he said.
aniqasyranie March 4th, 2010, 09:07 AM UMP di Gambang kekal
Oleh YUSRI SAHAT
utusanpahang@utusan.com.my
Beliau berkata demikian selepas menyaksikan perjanjian jual beli hartanah melibatkan anak syarikat UMP, UMP Holding Sdn. Bhd (UMPH) dengan syarikat Frontier Bond (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Frontier Bond) dan MEC Industrial Park Sdn. Bhd. (MEC) di sini hari ini.
Syarikat kewangan, Affin Islamic Bank Berhad (Affin Islamic Bank) merupakan bank pembiaya urusan pembelian hartanah itu.
Pada majlis itu, UMPH diwakili Pengerusinya, Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman manakala Frontier Bonds diwakili Pengarahnya, Ir. Kee Book Heed dan MEC pula diwakili Pengarah Urusan, Eddie Yoe.
Affin Islamic Bank diwakili Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif, Kamal Ariffin Mohd. Jamil.

Kuantan to benefit from open access network
By SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: From July, some 5,000 households in the city centre here will be the first to enjoy the services of Jalur Lebar Nasional Sdn Bhd (Jalenas), the country’s first open access fibre-to-the-home high-speed broadband.
The company’s executive director Heikal Mohd Ali said that four multinational firms had signed an agreement with Jalenas and talks were underway with three other service providers.
“The charges imposed on consumers will be announced by the respective service providers as we are merely providing the infrastructure to enhance competitiveness among industry players.
“There is no room for mistakes or trial and error since it is a private financing project involving a government-linked company (GLC).
“We have secured financing of RM150mil to kickstart the Kuantan phase,” he said after a Jalenas ground-breaking ceremony by Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob at Putra Square here.
Also present was High Speed Broadband Technology Sdn Bhd (HSBT) chairman and state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin.
Heikal said that Jalenas hoped to have 30,000 connections to homes and offices with bandwidth of 30 to 100Mbps from the service providers by the end of this year.
“After three years of hard work, we have reached this milestone to mark the start of the physical part of the work.
“Other cities in Asia with fibre-to-the-home are Hong Kong and Singapore. Now, Kuantan is also on the map.
“Jalenas will build, own and operate a neutral open access network as another utility to support multiple-service and content providers in serving customers,” he said.
Heikal said that Jalenas’ network was designed to offer some of the most advanced broadband services in the world.
He said that businesses would benefit from faster and better access to the worldwide online economy and create jobs and opportunities starting with Kuantan.
“There are some companies which are content to run fibre-to-the-street, but we at Jalenas will run fibre all the way to the home.
“Our high-capacity optical fibre has unlimited capacity, enabling us to support all the applications of today, tomorrow and far into the future,” he added.
Meanwhile, Adnan said that Jalenas as a GLC had a social responsibility.
He said the company’s main objective was to complement the national broadband agenda and assist the Government in achieving 50% high-speed broadband penetration by the end of this year.
Jalenas is owned by HSBT, a company jointly owned by Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd and Bumiraya Resources Sdn Bhd.
The company is privately funded and is expected to invest up to RM10bil on its infrastructure nationwide.
With plans to connect up to 2.5 million city homes and offices, it aims to be the world’s largest open access deployment by a single network operator.
Subscribers to the network will get triple play (Internet, telephony and IPTV) services from multiple competing service providers.
chong_ferrari March 8th, 2010, 05:05 AM CYBERJAYA: The Pahang government will proceed with plans to set up a stem cell research hub despite questions being raised on the effectiveness of stem cell treatment, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said.
Adnan said the state government was aware of questions being raised both here and abroad over the authenticity of claims that stem cells could be used to cure a number of ailments.
He said some quarters felt that more research should be carried out to determine if the treatment actually worked but he noted that many individuals claimed that their condition had improved following such treatment.
“My nephew who suffers from Down Syndrome has been receiving stem cell treatment and there has been notable change in him ever since the treatment started,” he told reporters after a dialogue session with the Pahang Undergraduates Council members at the Multimedia University here yesterday.

aniqasyranie March 10th, 2010, 05:37 AM Privasia Awarded Broadband Project In Kuantan
KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- Privasia Technology Bhd has been awarded by Jalur Lebar Nasional Sdn Bhd (Jalenas) the contract to design, supply and install equipment for Phase 1 of the high speed broadband (HSBB) network implemented by Jalenas.
In a statement here Tuesday, Privasia said the Phase 1 of Jalenas' HSBB project involved setting up the infrastructure in Kuantan, Pahang.
For Privasia, a leading player in Information Communication Technology (ICT) outsourcing and consulting in Malaysia, the contract is a vote of confidence in the company's capabilities and experience, said its Chief Executive Officer, Puvanesan Subenthiran.
"We believe that this project would be an additional commendable reference point in our portfolio," he said.
Jalenas is owned by HSBT, a company jointly owned by Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd and Bumiraya Resources Sdn Bhd.
Jalenas was earlier reported saying that it was looking to invest up to RM10 billion on its HSBB infrastructure nationwide, and had signed agreements with four multinational companies to implement the project.
Under the agreement, Jalenas also has the option of appointing Privasia for the subsequent maintenance and support services for the active components rolled out under Phase 1.
Jalenas' fibre optic cable network with open access will enable users to select their own service providers when using the Internet. Jalenas is aiming to equip about 30,000 households and offices with broadband speeds of between 30Mbps and 100Mbps by the end of the year.
Kuantan would be the first town in Malaysia to utilise HSBB infrastructure with open access.

aniqasyranie March 11th, 2010, 09:27 AM Adnan: ICT is the key to boosting state income
By SIMON KHOO
simonkhoo@thestar.com.my
KUANTAN: ICT is the key to increasing revenue for the state without burdening the people with a rise in taxes, said Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
Adnan said that Pahang’s revenue was derived from three main areas namely forestry, land and water.
“However, water is never a profit-making business as we have been subsidising consumers for it with a huge amount.
Farsighted approach: Adnan (second from left) looking at a modem while Mohd Sharkar (second from right) and Jalenas commercial adviser Rupert Graves look on during the event in Kuantan on Tuesday.
“For every RM1 they pay, we fork out RM2 and many are not aware of this.
“As such, we looked at other avenues and decided to move into ICT to increase revenue since we spend a substantial amount on the subsidies,” he said after performing a ground-breaking ceremony for Jalur Lebar Nasional Sdn Bhd (Jalenas), the country’s first open-access fibre-to-the-home high-speed broadband project in Putra Square here recently.
Also present were High Speed Broadband Technology Sdn Bhd (HSBT) chairman and state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin and Jalenas executive director Heikal Mohd Ali.
Adnan said the project came about during his second term as Pahang Mentri Besar.
Adnan had instructed Mohd Sharkar, then a United States graduate, to look into ways for the state to get involved in ICT.
“Besides raising revenue, I saw it as an opportunity to enhance Internet access. As a government-linked company, Jalenas has a social responsibility and is not out to compete with firms such as Telekom Malaysia,” he said.
Adnan said that Jalenas’ main aim was to complement the national ICT agenda and assist the Government in achieving a 50% high-speed broadband penetration rate by the end of this year.
He said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would soon launch a new economic model incorporating the three key elements of creation, innovation and value-added.
“Jalenas is a component in the value-added category and will realise the envisioned target to contribute to society.
“We want to complement the market and have a slice of the cake,” he said.
He said the telcos offered maximum bandwidth of 4Mbps whereas Jalenas’ 100Mbps would allow a full-length movie to be downloaded in less than 30 seconds.
Adnan urged all industry players including bankers to help the Government in enhancing the country’s competitiveness in ICT.
Jalenas is owned by HSBT, a company jointly owned by Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd and Bumiraya Resources Sdn Bhd.
It is funded privately and expected to invest up to RM10bil on its infrastructure nationwide.
