About 260km from kl to the east is the breathtaking South China Sea, spanning over to the Philippines coast. A short distance from the coast is where the Kuantan town is located and protected by a peninsula, Kuantan River. The town is a bustling centre, yet retains a combination of modern and old charm setting of the town and the people. To-date, Kuantan is the leading urban growth centre in the east coast. The town suburban has expanded rapidly 55km up to the Kemaman town, right after the Pahang/Terengganu border. Heavy industries such as Gebeng, Peramu and Kertih at southern Terengganu are within 1½ hour reach. The town has the advantage of strong connectivity from the East Coast Highway, Kuantan airport and the Kuantan port. A dedicated 50km railway has been laid out between Kuantan port and the Kertih Petrochemical Complex. In the future, the rail will be either connected to KL or Mentakab town at the central Pahang. Overall, Kuantan is destined to be a major populated area in the near future, as the outlook in the growth of industries, tourism and trades are on the rise. Recently, the National Physical Plan 2005 has identified four cities (KL, Georgetown, JB and Kuantan) as the future growth centre hub of trades, offices, transportation and tourism.

I travel regularly to Kuantan for working purpose, and my own experience together with many outsiders here would simply love to settle down in Kuantan. Life here is ‘not so hectic, not so slow’, but an exciting place, made by the existing of surrounding natural beauties and ample spots for chilling out. There are excellent beachside, riverside and streetside here for your daily or weekend spending. And yes, you can go and sit on the beach for hours and sip gin slings if the mood takes you. After all these years of development in kuantan, it hasn’t been too rampant as to cause disorientation and confusion, but at an even pace that allows you to catch your breath once in a while. For one it still remains a good safe town to raise a family, crime is low, prices are not as inflated, people friendly (to a point), there are good food enough to keep your palate from wanting and if you need a break from work, the beaches are just a drive away or a visit to the local park isn’t too far off.

Mahkota Road
This is the oldest street, Mahkota Road with prewar and 70s shops lining along. The street keeps bustling with old and modern trade activities and has been the soul for many Kuantanites livehood.

Jalan Besar
This road is better known as salt fish street, although the numbers of salt fish shops are declining. Many owners have shifted away into bigger premises outside the town centre.

Fish Market Hall:
This is the huge fish market hall, adjacent to the Kuantan Main Market. Various fish can be found selling here, including some endangered species like shark. You will spoilt for plenty of choices, fresh and cheap fish here. The experience at the hall is nothing short of like at a share market trading floor. Bargaining and chopping sounds are the main ingredient of this lively market.

Kuantan River Esplanade:
Kuantan Esplanade is one of the country most developed riversides. The Esplanade has been around since 70s and continues to enjoy high patronage of visitors today. Lining along the serene Kuantan River, the esplanade has become a popular hangout during the day and night. There are cafes and eating facilities for visitors, and for those love fishing, you can select the best spot along this 1.3km esplanade. However, on weekend night come early to ‘booked’ the place as hundreds of people spend their night time occupying the entire esplanade for night fishing. Accompanied by their families and friends for gathering, the place has become a family favorite outdoor spot.

In Kuantan, popular parks have provided the locals an avenue for night life.

Traffic condition
Kuantan is now seriously facing the problem of daily congestion on weekdays. Forget about fast lane and flyovers… your speedometer won’t go much beyond 60km/h. Life on the road is rather slow here. With constraint space for expansion of town roads, traffic condition here is unsurprisingly expected to reach critical level. Public transport is lacking with no improvement of buses and facilities. These are the major issues affecting the whole population since the past decades ago.

Beaches around Kuantan:

Pahang coastline offers one of the region top most beautiful beaches, with Kuantan home to two international well-known beaches, Teluk Chempedak (TC) and Cherating Beach. Both beaches have attracted Club Med and Hyatt to land their flag on the shore from the early 70s, suggesting the significance of Pahang beaches to the world. On recently, another beach, Balok Beach is also gaining reputation for the region top most preferred location for wind surfing.

From the Kuantan town driving along 55km north to Pahang/Terengganu boundary, you will have the choices on many top resorts and chalets lining along the route. I ll start off with the most popular, Teluk Chempedak.

1. Teluk Chempedak (TC)

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/fongsifu/kuantan%20forum/TelukCemp.jpg

Teluk Chempedak is 5km from the Kuantan town. It is among the more developed beaches in Malaysia. And whatever beach fun you happen to be looking for; sailing, surfing, skiing, camping or just sunbathing, Teluk Chempedak has it.

Bring out yr family or friends, head straight to TC and take a breezing walk along its promenade or lies on the beach. With the unruffled environment, you probably end up chatting or drinking way past the midnight. There is no such thing as the evening comes, you pack off and leave. Life at TC keep continues all the time, alive with people hanging out till the dawn. On big occasion like Chinese lantern festival, New Year and Merdeka Eve, the beach is filled with thousands of people celebrating, which KLites may envy the Kuantanites of celebrating in freestyle. On the other days, sit on the beach and enjoy the morning sunrise, or the full moon by the sea. It’s a nature therapy for stress out.

Hotels:
5-star Hyatt Regency Kuantan

Hyatt Regency is an excellent place to stay. In its 20yrs operation, the 550-rooms hotel has never fall short of high occupancy. The hotel has undergone 3 major expansions from time to time, indicates the continuous lure of foreign and local tourists to the beach.

2. Gelora Beach

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/fongsifu/kuantan%20forum/IMG_1558.jpg

Gelora beach is located along the way to Teluk Chempedak. Locals love the place for recreational purpose, especially in the evening where the place is crowded with joggers and visitors. It is one of the most serene places in kuantan for hanging out, with many manmade lakes and shady trees alongside. Compare with Malaysia most famous lake, Taiping Lake, here Kuantan own Gelora Lake is just as good as there, but it is lesser known.

A further walk north of Gelora Beach is the Tanjung Tongkang. Here, the hillrock set apart Gelora beach and the Teluk Chempedak. A top favorite residence spot among the expatriates is located here. Kuantan Tembeling Resort is a cluster of 5 blocks of service condo, offering a great view of the town and the sea.

3. Beserah Beach:

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/fongsifu/kuantan%20forum/Kuantan_KLL_3.jpg

If you have a desire to take a look at the culture of the region, the Kuantan coast offers an easy glimpse into everyday Malay life. Beserah Beach is a local fishing village where you can watch the fishermen use water buffaloes to haul their catch from the shore to a processing area. The community is about 10km from Kuantan and includes a batik fabric factory and several handicraft shops. One of the best things you can do at Beserah is having dinner at seafood restaurants. Kuantan top seafood restaurants can be found here, which are Pak Su and Beserah Restaurant. With the roar sound of waves and breezing air, it’s easily compliment the natural way of enjoying seafood. Both are located along the main road from the beach.

5. Balok Beach:

Another further 5km from Batu Hitam lays an unruffled beach, a paradise for wind-surfing fanatics. Tropical breezes and long stretches white sand blend with the crystal blue South China Sea to make relaxation impossible to resist. Numerous of hotel resorts and chalets can be found here, fronting the long wide of the sea. Every month of January, Balok Beach is the venue of Monsoon Madness Cup, held yearly as part of an International Windsurfing and Kite Boarding Event. According to the board, the event is telecast to an audience of 500 million in 120 countries, attracted more than 40 competitors from 14 countries like Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the US and other parts of Malaysia.

The huge bay at Balok Beach, which curves round a wide arc offering over 16km of coast with gentle shelves and no sudden drops or reefs, makes it a safe place to host this extreme sport. Together with consistent cross and on-shore winds of between 10 and 20 knots, Balok makes it the top 10 venues in the world for windsurfing.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g297/fongsifu/kuantan%20forum/fc14.jpg

Cherating, about 40km north of Kuantan is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in Southeast Asia. A beach village is, according to one source, “the perfect antidote to frantic city life.” How good are the beaches there? Cherating became the home of Asia’s first Club Med. And parts of the beach are set aside as one of the world’s most important sea turtle sanctuaries. But it is more than just beach that brings visitors to Cherating. Atmosphere is essential to the charm and attraction of Cherating. The actual town is basically a Malay kampung, known as Kampung Cherating Lama. This small village is home to number of budget chalets and straw huts on the beach, mostly operated by locals.

Kampung Cherating Lama

There are a wide range of accommodations available in Cherating. The previously mentioned Club Med is an example of the more upscale offerings. The 200 acre of Club Med Village Cherating feels like a cross between a national park and a spa. Once you step into the village, everything is exclusively for guest use and even the beach is a private beach, guarded at two sides from any intruder.

I only pass Kuantan when my family went to Terengganu, now I feel so 'rugi' for not stopping by at Kuantan.

Sorry to say this, but I always imagined Kuantan something like Ipoh coz to me other cities besided KL, Penang and JB are somehow like Ipoh....

COVER STORY: Cruising on the river
F.K. KOK
NewStraitTimes

To see how important the Kuantan River is, take a ferry cruise that will take you on an adventure of the refreshing kind, writes F.K. KOK

THE recent month-long National Water Festival 2006 was aptly launched at the Kuantan Esplanade on April 2 as life on the water is a daily business for the people here.

Towns like Kuantan began as a river settlement because rivers were the main transportation artery into the interior and their many estuaries provided a safe haven for seafarers and fishermen.

To best get an idea of what Kuantan was like in the early days, go on a river cruise aboard the ferry service which takes visitors along the Kuantan River. The trip is a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the city and offers a different perspective of the town.

A picturesque view of the Esplanade, peaceful fishing villages, a 500-year-old mangrove forest and a legacy of the Japanese Occupation are some of the highlights of the cruise. It starts at the Shahbandar Jetty and heads for the Tanjung Lumpur fishing village located at the mouth of Kuantan River.

Fishing and passenger boats are moored along the beach or going somewhere. Those with a keen eye will notice the different colour schemes of the boats. Boats registered in Pahang have cabins painted yellow and bear registration numbers starting with the alphabet ‘P’. Those bearing ‘J’, ‘T’ and ‘K’ are registered in Johor, Terengganu and Kelantan and are coloured blue, green and red respectively.

The 339-hectare Mangrove Forest Reserve is a busy area. The muddy shores of sheltered coasts and river estuaries are fertile ground for the mangroves. This is home to crabs, prawns and fish as well as a rich source of fuelwood (Bruguiera and Rizophora spp.) and nipah palm leaves which are sought after for roofing purposes.

The mangrove forests can only support hardy plants that can grow in marine clay and which have adapted to these harsh conditions by developing “breathing” roots.

At Tanjung Lumpur, species like Api Api (Avicennia alba and Avicennia marina) and Perepat (Sonneratia alba) thrive on the seaward zone where the soil is soft, loose and exposed to inter-tidal conditions. They have developed snorkel-style roots that stick out of the soil to obtain water and oxygen.

Further inland at Peramu, the swamp can be divided into zones, each dominated by a single species of tree. Vast tracts of Berus (Bruguiera cylindrical) and Bakau Kurap (Rhizophora mucronata) thrive. This is the land of mangroves, striking back with their aerial roots through which water is absorbed via osmosis from the substrate.

In the back zone of compact, clayey crab mounds grow Bebuta (Excoecaria agallocha), Nyireh Bunga (Xylocapus granatum), and Sea Olive.

Away from tidal influence, Nipah swamp forests and clumps of Nibong (Oncosperma tigillarium) grow on the banks.

Stop at Tanah Putih where the 250-metre-long wooden boardwalk allows visitors to stroll through the mangrove forest and get close looks at the flora and fauna including crabs, monitor lizards, shore birds etc.

The journey does not end here. You can take a walk back in time – to World War II. After the Japanese Army invaded Kuantan, they constructed two pill boxes at the present Tanah Putih Bridge. This was a strategic location as it controlled the waterways to Sungei Lembing town (where precious tin was mined) and land routes to the south of the peninsula. One of the pill boxes still stands today, a solitary legacy of the Occupation.

Things To Do

Besides the river cruise, a walk along the Esplanade is equally refreshing. The sound of lapping water and riverine activities bring back fond memories of the early beginnings of the town. Here you can also find shops offering clothes, handicrafts and dried sea products.

The Kuantan Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan, aka MPK) operates the service. There are daily departures. The maximum capacity for each cruise is 20 passengers.

Accommodation ranges from the resthouse to budget and five-star hotels.

Hyatt Regency is a favourite for those who like staying at beach-front properties close to the centre of town. Rates are RM280++ (garden view) and RM320++ (sea view) with breakfast for two. Tel: 09-566 1234.

If you want to shop, then MS Garden Hotel is the preferred choice. It is located next to Berjaya Megamall, Kuantan’s newest, biggest shopping mall. Rates are RM198 nett (deluxe single/double) with breakfast. Tel: 09-517 1888.

Megaview Hotel at the Esplanade offers a good view of the Kuantan River and you can watch the coming and going of fishing boats. Rates are RM120 nett (standard single/double) with breakfast. Tel: 09-517 1888.

Where To Eat?

Just a 15-minute walk towards the bus station from the Esplanade is a hawker centre with almost 100 stalls dishing up local delights from rice to noodles. Prices are from RM3 to RM5 per order. As for drinks, there’s tea, coffee, ais-kacang or fruit juices with prices ranging from RM1 to RM3.

Getting There

From Kuala Lumpur, use the East Coast Highway to get to Kuantan which takes about three hours. Exit at the Gambang Toll Plaza and follow the signages.

As you approach the tallest building in Kuantan (Teruntum Complex), you will see MPK HQ on your right. The jetty is next to this. There is no U-turn option, so keep left and make a right turn at the traffic lights into Jalan Mahkota. Keep to the right lane and make a right turn at the first available turn. When you are on Jalan Besar, keep left and look for directions to the jetty.

There is ample parking at the jetty or at MPK HQ. It is a ticket or coupon parking system at 42 sen per hour.

Mission Biotechnologies Invests RM100m In Biodiesel Industry

KUANTAN, June 2 (Bernama) -- Mission Biotechnologies has invested RM100 million to set up a new biodiesel and glycerine purification refinery located at the Kuantan Port here.

Its Chairman, Tan Sri Razak Ramli said the refinery was designed to produce 100,000 tonnes of biodiesel a year using crude palm oil (CPO) as its primary feedstock.

He said the company has already secured the feedstock at a highly competitive cost.

"Mission Biotechnologies has also secured a five-year agreement with an European trading house for the sale of as much as 250,000 tonnes a year of biodiesel," he said at the ground breaking ceremony for the refinery here, Friday.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Peter Chin and Menteri Besar Pahang Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

Razak said, CPO and other key raw materials necessary for the production of biodiesel including methanol were readily available at the port giving the advantages for the company.

He said the project has already commenced and should be in commercial production in June 2007.

IF you are itching to take your car out for a spin during the weekend, I would suggest an overnight trip to Kuantan.

What would normally have taken five hours via the Karak highway has been cut in half thanks to the new East Coast highway. It bypasses many towns and winding roads so your journey won’t be a tiring one. A word of caution though, if you intend to drive alone - take a break around Temerloh before heading for the Kuantan exit by the Jabor-Sungai Lembing trunk road. The road is so straight that motorists tend to fall asleep at the wheel. You can see skid marks and damaged Armco barriers along the highway. Do plan and pick your staging points so that you get ample rest.

Okay, so what’s Kuantan known for? First on the list is seafood. You can check out some really good makan places along Jalan Beserah. One of my favourite dinner stopovers is Restoran Yong Foo. Don’t let this simple setup fool you because the stream of regular customers who patronise this eatery will fill up all available tables by nightfall.

Yong Foo opens from 5.30pm onwards and serves some really good steamed river fishes. There are some “extras” on the menu I will leave you to find out. Next, there’s Restoran Pak Su. Located at the end of Jalan Beserah (technically speaking, at the tenth-kilometre on the costal road to Terengganu). Well, once more, looks can be deceiving. This makan place, which is well-known for its “boxed-crab” is in fact, owned by a Chinese family.
They serve live saltwater fish such as garoupa and seabass but there’s also a selection of Canadian lobsters and oyster for the seafood connoisseur. I picked the fish instead. Prices here are according to market rates and you have the liberty to choose your own fish.

Besides seafood though, Kuantan has some interesting food joints and if you take the trouble to ask a local or have someone to show you around, there’s a very good chance you’ll find exactly what you want.

My choice of breakfast coffeeshop is located at Teluk Cempedak. It’s about 10 minutes from the town centre. Look for Restoran Hoi Yin. Here, you will find scores of people queuing up for a bowl of laksa lemak. Said to be the best noodle-house around, a hot bowl of this local delicacy will set you back a mere RM3.50.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c236/tyfong55/kuantan1.jpg

There’s plenty of taufoo-pok (beancurd), tau-nga (beansprouts) and sang-hum (rare-cockles) to go with the spicy laksa. Of course, no noodle experience here is complete without a tall glass of kopi-o peng (iced black coffee). But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Of course, you’ll need a place to stay if you arrived just in time for dinner. There are plenty of hotels here ranging from beach resorts at Telok Cempedak, Balok and Cherating. But there are also places in the town centre and motels along Jalan Besar near the riverbank.

For activity driven folk, check out the boat rides along the Kuantan Esplanade. The State government has allocated a big budget to make this place the most happening getaway in the East Coast. A typical one-and-a-half hour riverline cruise is RM5 a pop, available from 7-10pm on weekend nights.

If you want to find out more about history, there’s the Sungai Lembing Museum about 42km down south. Open daily except on Mondays, the museum charges a fee of RM1 per entry.

Having said all that, there’s plenty of other good makan shops and happening spots that haven’t been mentioned here, but be absolutely sure to have a good map. A good local guide will help you get the most out of your trip.

Thats true. I rarely hv seen this kind of environment around except in ktn where especially in eating places. Take an example of a big chinese restaurant, the Swan. Cook by the chinese, served by the chinese but its customers r filled with variety of races. During the ramaddan period, the restaurant was 90% filled with muslims customers breaking fast by having chinese cuisines.

Another would be the famous curry mee in teluk chempedak. No halal tag and cooked by chinese, its still retain the top favourite among the local malays. :) This is what we call muhibbah life.

Unusual sights at Charas Cave

By SIMON KHOO

KUANTAN: In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2007, tourists may consider visiting the lesser-known Charas Cave.

Located about 4km from the main road leading to the former famous mining town of Sungai Lembing, therein also lies the Panching Thai Buddhist Temple.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/1/19/southneast/ms_pg04cave.jpg
Entrance: The cave opening leading into the temple where a variety of statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities are housed.
Because of the absence of proper signages, first-time visitors may be in danger of losing their way as they have to pass through several private oil palm estates en route to the cave.

Along the way, they would also need to keep their eyes open for stray cows and their droppings littered all over the road.

For the uninitiated, Charas Cave lies at the foot of the imposing 1,000m-high Panching Hill.

The cave is said to be millions of years old and is formed of granite and limestone.

Its unique rock formations have made it a major attraction for amateur as well as professional archaeologists and geographers.

The cave is upright and is visible from the road leading towards Sungei Lembing town.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/1/19/southneast/ms_pg04charas.jpg
Sampe showcase: One section of the many statues of deities inside Charas Cave.
Upon reaching the entrance, visitors who are expecting a smooth path into the cave, would be in for another surprise.

Similar to Selangor's Batu Caves, visitors would be required to trek up a flight of about 100 stairs.

What made it challenging was its steepness and the occasional narrow and slippery path while descending into the cave’s opening.

But before one is allowed to climb up, a minimal fee of RM2 for adults and RM1 for children is applicable.

A full-time worker employed by the temple’s committee is overseeing the collection for its maintenance.

Tourists visiting in groups can make arrangements for a guided tour or take part in a flower bath ceremony.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/1/19/southneast/ms_pg04buddha.jpg
Top draw: The reclining Buddha statue is the main attraction in the cave.
The temple is managed by Thai Buddhist priest Phra Chuang Dhammathiro.

A local priest S. Maniam helps him with the daily operations.

Maniam, who has been the caretaker for 14 years now, said he had many visitors including foreigners during weekends and public holidays.

“I enjoyed the work to show visitors around the cave and explain to them its unique formations,” he said.

Notable sites were rock formations resembling the goddess Kwan Yin, an elephant, a combing princess, a royal tombstone, a fish and a nostril.

Maniam said all the formations were the work of nature.

The highlight of the visit is the image of the reclining Buddha at the far end of the cave.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/1/19/southneast/ms_pg04stairs.jpg
Good exercise: The steep stairs leading to the cave opening.
“If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the many white snakes slithering in the cave openings.

“We are installing more lightings and carrying out minor upgrading works,” said Maniam, adding that the temple is open to visitors from 8.30am to 6pm daily.

For those yearning for a majestic view of the town, they could climb another flight of steep stairs to enjoy a breathtaking sight.

On the way out, visitors were given a stern reminder against committing vandalism.

The fading wordings on a signboard reads: “It took nature 400 million years to create Panching Caves. It has become our heritage. Do not destroy it in a day.”

Who knows... the twin towers are not completed yet... Maybe their overall heights are higher than Teruntum Complex?

By the way, according to the latest ads on papers, they stated that the the towers will be completed by 2009. (A hotel called Oriental Coast Hotel with 470 rooms and a office block - I forget the name). Meanwhile the shopping mall will be ready in the end of 2007 (named as East Coast Mall).

And....... I'm not sure how true is it... :speech:

Light dims for fireflies along Sungai Kuantan
24 Mar 2007
M. Hamzah Jamaludin
NewStraitTimes

KUANTAN: Unlike their better known cousins in Kuala Selangor, the fireflies in the mangrove swamps along Sungai Kuantan, and its tributary Sungai Belat, receive little attention. But like their cousins their numbers are rapidly falling.

"There used to be thousands of them, but in the past two years the numbers have gone down," said Loo Jen Yeh whose company, LBC Sdn Bhd, has been organising boat trips to watch the fireflies along the two rivers since 2002.

The most popular site is a one-kilometre stretch of Sungai Belat just before it meets Sungai Kuantan. Thousands of fireflies used to illuminate the swamp, but now there are only a few.

Assistant tourist guide Kamaruddin Abdullah blames pollution and encroachment in the mangrove areas.

"There are illegal settlements along the riverbank," said the 52-year-old. "The people there, and the fishermen, often throw used engine oil and rubbish into the river."

Both Kamaruddin and Loo also said the number of tourists visiting the area had more than halved because of the dwindling firefly population. As well as pollution, Loo blamed uncontrolled viewing trips. He said he did not allow visitors to use flash cameras, make noise or smoke.

"But now other operators are organising trips without such restrictions. This can scare the insects off," he said.

Inderapura state assemblyman Shafik Fauzan Sharif, who organised a trip to view the fireflies for newsmen on Thursday night, said he would bring the issue to the attention of the authorities.

He suggested that the Kuantan Municipal Council and Forest Research Institute Malaysia conduct a study on the fireflies here.

Kuantan's Landmark.
Wonder if it still 'the' place to lepak2 and get into a game or two of bowling.
Definitely Kuantan's hangout spot during the late 80's....:)

Kuantanite
August 2nd, 2007, 04:40 AM
It is no longer 'the' place. It's dark and stuffy inside the complex (poor management). The tiny bowling alley is long dead and gone. The cinema there is also closed years ago. The lepak-ing has shifted next door to Kuantan Parade. The bowling actions are at the Supreme Lanes at Kuantan Plaza and the Megalanes at the Berjama Megamall.

Astral To Develop RM2.8 Billion Kuantan High-Tech Park
September 25, 2007 20:51 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Astral Asia Bhd plans to develop the estate in Pahang which is owned by its 65 percent-owned subsidiary, into a mixed development project with a gross development value of RM2.8 billion.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia here Tuesday, Astral said the proposed development, to be known as Kuantan High-Tech Park, would include a high-tech industry park, a commercial centre, an industrial research centre, a mixed residential designs, public amenities and excellent infrastructures.

It said the 749,308-hectare estate, known as Ladang Bukit Kuin, was currently planted with matured oil palm and was due for replanting.

Astral said the subsidiary, Syarikat Ladang LKPP Sdn Bhd, would jointly develop the estate with its wholly-owned subsidiary Tasja Development Sdn Bhd.

"Preliminary studies conducted by the group suggest that the project will enhance the value of the land and will yield better returns compared with the existing land usage.

"The land is well supported by surrounding infrastructures like the East Coast Highway, the Kuantan port and airport and Gambang Technology Park.

"It is expected to take about 15 years to complete," it said.

New Kuantan complex to groom bumi businessmen
Thursday September 27, 2007
TheStar

KUANTAN: A new commercial complex to groom bumiputra entrepreneurs in the state has been completed and is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

The RM12mil Mahkota Commercial Complex is being built by Pahang State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) on 1.6ha in Indera Mahkota.

Pahang SEDC’s entrepreneur training unit will move its office from Teruntum Complex to the new complex so that it can better manage and organise its activities.

According to the unit’s manager Rasli Jamil, the complex was equipped with facilities such as seminar and exhibition halls, four workshops including a computer laboratory, a hostel that could accommodate up to 80 people and 106 commercial lots.

“Now that we have a proper centre to train bumiputras, the unit can better organise its activities as everything will be centralised.

“The unit’s administration office will be located here as well,” he said when met during a dinner hosted by Pahang SEDC here recently.

He added that the complex had been divided into eight zones with each focusing on a special product such as local food, dried food, textiles and handicraft.

As for the commercial lots, Rasli said they were not up for sale but would be rented to entrepreneurs, adding that they had received 160 applications so far.

The commercials lots would be opened in October, he added.

Rasli said the unit was now helping to facilitate Multimedia Development Corporation to train entrepreneurs in information technology.

For more information, contact the unit at 09-513 5566 ext 555/525.

Some construction updates from a recent trip:

Kuantan is booming with new shops (lots of them!), but then, really lack office towers. Housing prices has gone up and averaging rm280,000 for 22ft double-storey house. MPK lauds firms for painting buildings
Monday October 29, 2007
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
TheStar

KUANTAN: Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) welcomes efforts by companies to sponsor the painting of strategically-located commercial buildings with bright colours.

Its president Datuk Azizan Ahmad said such efforts augured well for MPK’s ongoing programme to beautify the town.

“These companies can even adopt buildings and paint them,” he told reporters after chairing a full board meeting recently.

He was asked to comment on the idea raised by councillor Mohamed Suffian Awang during the meeting.

Mohamed Suffian had suggested that companies adopt certain commercial buildings in town like what was done by a telecommunications company.

He said the company painted two buildings bright red at a popular spot in Jalan Tun Ismail, creating a cheerful setting in the area.

Azizan noted that telecommunications companies faced a competitive market and always came up with new ideas on promoting their products.

He said the companies usually came up with sponsorship projects.

On a private television station that used the image of a hotel to show the weather forecast in Kuantan during its news presentation, Azizan said MPK would look into the matter and seek an explanation.

He said the image of a hotel did not reflect Kuantan as there were other attractions.

Earlier, before winding up the meeting, Azizan, on behalf of MPK, expressed condolences to the family of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong who died on Tuesday.

He said that MPK acknowledged the contributions that Lim had made to the development of Pahang.

3. Hypermarket? I don't think there'll be any new hypermarkets in Pahang state as the state goverment has banned the opening of any hypermarkets to protect local business runners. (according to newspaper). The only hypermarket in Pahang is Giant in Kuantan.

Kuantan Qualifies For City Status
November 23, 2007 20:59 PM

KUANTAN, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Kuantan qualifies to be accorded city status but the declaration has been deferred due to certain reasons.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the state government wanted to ensure that proper planning had been made, including on safety and to reduce traffic congestion, before declaring Kuantan a city.

"We have met the criteria for city status in terms of revenue collection, population and facilities," he said when winding up the debate on the 2008 State Budget today.

He said the Kuantan Municipal Council and other relevant agencies had been instructed to be more proactive to address problems relating to public facilities, safety and traffic congestion.

On the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) development plan, Adnan said all quarters, including government agencies and elected representatives, should support it to ensure the success of its implementation.

On the deficit in the state Budget, he said it could not be avoided due to the increase in the state government's expenditure but added that it was still able to pay the salaries of its employees.

"We don't pay the salaries of state employees using loans because the loans we get from the federal government are for development purposes," he added.

On Friday, Adnan tabled a deficit budget with estimated revenue for 2008 at RM467.04 million against an estimated expenditure of RM900.15 million, comprising RM517.41 million for administration cost and RM382.74 million for development.

On the estimated revenue, he said it included RM382.74 million in development allocations and loans from the federal government.

Adnan said the state government's venture into various fields, including information and communication technology (ICT) and biotechnology, was aimed at increasing the state's revenue.

He said the project involving the supply of raw water from Pahang to Selangor, costing about RM9 billion, was among efforts by the state government to increase its revenue.

Adnan also told the assembly that the sitting could be their last before the 12th general election.

The assembly was adjourned sine die.

Parkson Corp to increase retail space by 30%

PENANG: PARKSON Corporation Sdn Bhd will increase its existing retail space by 30% with the opening of seven more outlets nationwide before the end of next year.

Parkson chief operating officer Toh Peng Koon said the new outlets would be at Sunway Pyramid and The Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, the Spring in Kuching, East Coast Mall in Kuantan, KBTC in Kota Baru, the extension of the existing outlet at Plaza Gurney and the relocation of bigger premises at the Bintang Plaza in Miri, Sarawak.

He said Parkson was confident with the current retail market performance and better turnover as a result of good economic performance and consumers’ purchasing power.

“We are expecting between 8% and 10% growth in the next two years and foresee thee retail market to show good performance and up to our expectation,” he told reporters after the official opening of Parkson’s 30th outlet at Sunway Carnival Mall at Bandar Seberang Jaya in Buterworth, Penang, on Friday.

Toh said the new outlet in The Pavilion located within the Golden Triangle in Kuala Lumpur would become the company’s flagship and biggest outlet with a floor space of 250,000sq feet.

He said the company would spend about RM60mil in renovation for the outlet at The Pavilion while the extension at Plaza Guney in Penang would cost the company another RM113mil and expected to be opened by end of next year.

“We also hope to open outlets in Laos and Cambodia. We will also set up two new outlets in Vietnam to make it five outlets altogether.

“We see Vietnam as a new economic powerhouse and confident of doing well there. We also have 40 outlets in 28 provinces in China,” he added.

Toh said the company had projected a RM50mil turnover for the Seberang Jaya outlet which had a retail space of 130,000sq feet.

The Parkson Sunway Carnival occupies the ground and first floor of the mall and has five levels of parking space to accommodate about 900 cars.

It offers 230 brands of merchandise and features ample fashion choices of ready-to-wears and accessories for ladies, men and children, a large cosmetics and fragrances section and a toy section operated by Toy’s R Us.

Toh said the outlet also provided services such as porter and escort service, free alterations, home delivery and umbrella facilities.

Carrefour to invest RM120m in 3 new outlets next year
by Woon Wu Lin
Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

KUALA LUMPUR: Carrefour plans to invest RM120 million to open two new outlets in the Klang Valley and one in Kuantan next year, said its Malaysia and Singapore managing director Shafie Shamsuddin.

He said one of the outlets would be ready in the first half of 2008, and the other two by the end of next year.

Speaking to reporters after the launch of its Ramadan and Raya Campaign yesterday, Shafie said also in the pipeline was a hypermarket distribution centre where factories could send their products directly to Carrefour to prevent excessive mark-ups by middlemen.

“We are still in talks with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, and we hope that there would be concrete plans for the centre by year-end,” he said.

Shafie said Carrefour expected its Ramadan and Raya Campaign over the next three months to contribute 15% to its revenue this year, adding that it would be in the region of between RM15 million and RM20 million.

He said the hypermarket was investing RM3 million into various promotions and loyalty programmes to boost Hari Raya sales, as well as for charity, and to assist small and medium enterprises (SME) during the festive season as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

Shafie said Carrefour had so far experienced very good growth in sales this year, and was on track to meet its projection of a 30% sales increase over the RM1.2 billion of 2006, adding that it had already achieved two thirds of the projected amount.

Carrefour’s Ramadan and Raya Campaign was officiated by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Among the events lined up are the SME Bazaar Ramadan, Ramadan and Raya Season Campaign, and the Customer Charity Booth Campaign, which started on Saturday and will run until Nov 10, 2007.

Carrefour expects RM20m sales

KUALA LUMPUR: Carrefour Malaysia expects to rake in sales of RM15mil to RM20mil over the next three months with the launch of its Ramadan and Raya campaign and promotions yesterday.

The hypermarket chain is investing about RM3mil for its campaign and promotions, which ends on Nov 10.

Carrefour Malaysia and Singapore managing director Shafie Shamsuddin was confident the campaign would boost the hypermarket's sales.

“We project a 15% increase in sales during this period,” he said after the campaign launch yesterday.

Carrefour Malaysia posted RM1.2bil sales last year and is on track to hit 30% growth this year.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal with Shafie Shamsuddin (behind) at the Ramadhan bazaar
As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, Carrefour will provide a booth at all its stores for customers who want to donate their purchases to Perwira K9, a charitable organisation in support of people with spinal cord injuries.

For its SME Bazaar Ramadan, Carrefour will set up booths outside selected stores at Subang Jaya, Wangsa Maju and Klang.

“The purpose of this bazaar is to offer an assortment of food and products to customers, create a shopping ambience and provide business opportunities to small and medium enterprises,” he said.

Shafie said 5% of the proceeds from Bazaar Ramadan would be donated to Perwira K9.

Shafie also said he expected consumer spending to remain strong especially in the run-up to the Hari Raya festivities.

“We've had good response especially from the Malay consumers. We believe they are wiser now in their choice of where to shop. They are more discerning as to which hypermarket offers the lowest prices.

“In the past one week, we've experienced good growth in terms of sales and we anticipate it to increase further when the balik kampung exodus begins,” he added.

On expansion plans, Shafie said the hypermarket operator planned to open three outlets next year, with the first targeted by June.

“We plan to open two in the Klang Valley and one in Kuantan next year,” he said.

From riverine village to state capital
Friday December 14, 2007
By PRITAM SINGH
TheStar

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/14/southneast/p8sultan.jpg

New capital: The late Sultan Abu Bakar officially declaring
Kuantan as the state capital in 1955, replacing Kuala Lipis.

Not many know that the bustling and vibrant Pahang state capital of Kuantan was a small riverine village whose early inhabitants came from a place called Kuantan in Sumatra.

They settled down on the bank of the river about half a mile upstream and called their new homeland Kampung Orang Kuantan, which was later shortened to Kuantan.

The river was named Kuantan River in1854.

It may also be difficult for the present generation to imagine that steamships docked at the mouth of Pahang River to transport tin ore to Singapore.

Equally mind-boggling to them will be that the present Jalan Mahkota was non-existent then, and the present padang (field) next to the mosque was all jungle and swamp.

These images of early Kuantan, as well as the social, cultural and economic activities of the time, were captured through the lens of Chan Chew from 1903 to 1951, and since then, by his son Chan Meng Sing.

The book Early Kuantan in Pictures by Meng Sing brings alive the town’s past.

It is a unique for it is not a textbook tracing the town’s history, but rather a collection of photographs taken since the beginning of the 20th century.

Yet the book contains valuable information and facts, obtained through research and interviews, that provide useful reading not only for students but also nostalgic Pahang residents who may wish to know about the state capital’s past.

The book features the town’s growth from a little riverine village to a bustling modern municipality.

The 300-page book, published by Chan Chew Photo Studio to mark its centennial, contains 450 photographs, mostly black and white pictures.

“Photography in those days was at its infancy. There were no simple or snapshot cameras,” said Meng Sing.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/14/southneast/p8river.jpg

Another view: Kuantan River as seen recently from the Municipal Building.

“My father started with a German-made Voiglander Contessa camera with Tessar lens using No. 122 postcard size roll films taking six pictures per roll. He did his own processing and printing,” he added.

In the book's introduction, Meng Sing provides a short profile of his father, a migrant from China’s Kwantung province, who settled down in Kuantan.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/14/southneast/p8kampung.jpg

The early years: Kuantan was then known as Kampung Orang Kuantan.
The name was later shortened to Kuantan.

“He was an accounts clerk with a mining company. He took up photography as a hobby which later turned into a passion. In 1907, he became a professional photographer, certainly the first in Kuantan and perhaps Pahang as well,” said Ming Sing with a sense of pride.

The first section of the book contains a brief history of Kuantan up to 1940 with early photographs of the town, the nearby fishing villages of Kampung Tanjung Lumpur and Beserah, the mining townships of Gambang and Sungai Lembing, as well as portraits of yesteryears.

Section two begins with Meng Sing’s childhood recollections of life during the Japanese Occupation and, among others, it has photographs that provide glimpses of the town’s growth after the war and the people’s solidarity during the Confrontation with Indonesia.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/12/14/southneast/p8besar.jpg

The hub: The town's commercial and administrative centre
was located in Main Street (now called Jalan Besar).

The last section focuses on some scenic landscapes that have disappeared over time due to modernisation.

“Many of the photographs in the book are sceneries.

“Photographs of people and events were destroyed or lost due to numerous renovations to our shop over the years,” wrote Meng Sing in the preface.

“Photographs taken during the Japanese Occupation were taken back by the Kempetai. Only negatives of sceneries were spared,” he added.

Meng Sing has one wish – that the book will find a place in Kuantan school libraries.

The photographs and short write-ups provide useful insights on life in the past, which will not be available in history textbooks.

Enquires on the book may be made at Chan Chew Photo Studio at 41, Jalan Mahkota, Kuantan.

Facelift for Hyatt Regency
Tuesday January 1, 2008
TheStar

KUANTAN: Over 200 guests and VIPs turned up at the Hyatt Regency Resort here recently to mark the reopening of Kampung Restaurant and launch of The Deli.

The restaurant was temporarily closed in September last year after the management decided to give it a facelift.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2008/1/1/southneast/se_02mahkota.jpg

Renovations completed: Tengku Abdullah (second from right) talking to Datuk
Johnny Ch'ng, Datuk Anuarul Perai and Eising during the ceremony in Kuantan recently.

Present to grace the ceremony was Tengku Mahkota Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and his wife Tengku Puan Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Also present were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis, state secretary Datuk Muhammad Safian Ismail, state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ayob Mohamed, members of royalty and other dignitaries.

The guests were entertained by the four-piece band Nightshift, which is also the resort’s resident band.

The resort's public relations manager Sallehuddin Nazir said the renovations were completed within three months.

He said the restaurant was modelled on a simple but elegant design to reflect the village environment.

“Situated on the hotel’s beachfront, it offers panoramic views of the South China Sea.

“The open kitchen offers a combination of Western, traditional Malaysian, Indian and local Chinese cuisine,” he said, adding that a fresh-juice and coffee bar in addition to a wine cellar were available to diners.

Sallehuddin said The Deli was a new outlet offering breads, cookies and savoury items, as well as homemade chocolates and truffles.

He said that people could place orders for birthday cakes, specially-created cakes with personalised messages and tarts.

KFC has opened a new outlet in Telok Chempedak. Located right next to McD, what used to be Palm Beach Bistro is now KFC Palm Beach. Just like McD, they are also opened 24hrs plus a drive thru and outdoor sitting. Both outlets enjoys good business due high human traffic volumn and their close proximity to the beach.

The environment and ambient is very different from those outlets in malls or city area especially during the night. Can't find such athmosphere anywhere else in Malaysia.

Here are a couple of shots taken (sorry not too good quality) of the new KFC Palm Beach. If I get better pics, I post next time.

Still not yet...It's know as Star Screen Cinema under the Kumpulan Pawagam Iswaria. So, it'll mainly show Bollywood movies, I guess.

yes, u r right. Star Screen cinemas will open new cineplex in kuantan early dec 2007. i've read the article from CINEMA ONLINE MAGAZINE.
however, the cinema didn't open yet...

Cinema Online, 22 November 2007
22 Nov - Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) is officially launching their latest multiplex at the Pavilion shopping centre, situated at the corner of Jalan Bukit Bintang this 28 November 2007. GSC Pavilion KL will offer cinema-goers in Kuala Lumpur's golden triangle a new choice of location in addition to GSC's existing 9-screen cineplex at nearby Berjaya Times Square (BTS), and the 12-screen TGV located at Suria KLCC, in what could be the cinema industry's very own 'Golden Triangle'.

Within its 13 screens, the 1888 seat GSC Pavilion offers attractions like a 38-seater Gold Class hall, plus a dedicated International Screens hall for foreign film festivals and screenings.

Currently, GSC appears to be the leader in the foreign art films market with their International Screens halls being an integral part of GSC Mid Valley Megamall, 1 Utama and Gurney Plaza in Penang. So far, The Picturehouse in Cineleisure Damansara by Cathay Cineplexes has been the only other venue serving fans of art films.

Under the roof of the newly opened Pavilion, GSC's latest multiplex sets to cater to the medium- to high-end consumer group, attracting a more focused range of visitors. Irving Chee, General Manager of GSC comments, "GSC Pavilion will appeal to the crowd that the mall itself will already attract, and will comprise visitors more used to the level of shopping and dining available in KL Pavilion and similar surrounding malls."
Pavilion serves a medium to higher end consumer group. Finishing touches to the 3 storey cinema lobby.
Accessibility will also be a factor for cinema-goers who are keen on visiting any one of the 'Golden Triangle' cinemas. KLCC can be reached by the LRT while both BTS and the Pavilion can be reached from a nearby monorail station. "In terms of accessibility, the entrance to Pavilion's entertainment annexe facing Jalan Raja Chulan is only a two-minute walk from the Raja Chulan Monorail Station, and 15 minutes' walk from the KLCC LRT station via the KL Convention Centre," said Chee.

The effort to search for an elusive parking space and its relatively high cost at the Pavilion may be a boon to those who favour convenience over comfort. Early evening shows on weekdays will likely be the most popular as people who are already working in, or visiting the area might stay on to seek entertainment instead of battling peak hour traffic exiting the city. Most would already have their cars parked in their own office blocks within the surrounding area.

Parking rates range from RM3.00 for first hour on weekdays to RM4 for first 3 hrs on weekend evenings
Normal ticket prices at GSC Pavilion can vary between RM8 and RM12, while prices at both GSC BTS and TGV KLCC falls between RM6 to RM10. A Gold Class ticket at GSC Pavilion however will cost you RM50, inclusive of the movie and complimentary use of blankets.

As a special opening promotion, GSC Pavilion is giving away tickets to free screenings at the cinema. Simply cut out the GSC showtimes listing in any major newspaper and present it at the box office counter from 24 to 27 November. Among the films scheduled for free screenings are "Ratatouille", "Spider-Man 3", "Transformers", "Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End', "Casino Royale", "Sivaji: The Boss", "Otai", "Secret", "Priceless" and "I Am David".

This however is only the tip of the iceberg as over the next one week alone, another four new cinema locations will be opening their doors. GSC Signature, Malaysia's first boutique cinema located at The Gardens, Mid Valley will be officially launched this 5 December, and is a first-of-its-kind venue with only two Gold Class halls and five Premier Class halls.

TGV Cinemas too will be opening two new outlets in Bukit Tinggi Klang and CapSquare KL within days of each other. Although intended for simultaneous opening with the AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre, the opening of the TGV in Bukit Tinggi Klang is likely to come after the mall's own opening on 28 November, as "the cinema might not be physically ready yet although we are still trying our best", says Chung Shyh Kwong, General Manager of TGV Cinemas. TGV CapSquare KL is currently expected to open on 1 December with its mall.
6-screen TGV Cineplex on level 3 in CapSquare KL. AEON Bukit Tinggi Klang, scheduled to open 28 November. The Gardens to have boutique GSC by 5 December.

Further out, in Kuantan, Star Screen Cinemas is looking at opening the city's second cineplex in Kompleks Teruntum around early December, breaking the monopoly set by GSC in Berjaya Megamall for years. MBO Cinemas too will also introducing a new location by early next year. Stayed tuned to www.cinema.com.my for more updates on upcoming cinema openings.

http://www.chinapress.com.my/data%5C2008-01-17%5Clocal%5C0117le01c.jpg

Bukit Gambar Waterpark Resort mercu tanda baru Kuantan

Sentoria labur RM110j bangun BGRC

Oleh RODELIO JUNJUN TAUCAN

KUALA LUMPUR 17 Jan. – Pemaju hartanah, Sentoria Harta Sdn.

I don't remember reading about hypermarkets specifically being 'banned' in Pahang. I know there was a 5 year 'freeze' on new hypermarkets in Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Johor Baru and Penang sometime in 2004. The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs was then trying to protect the smaller sundry shops.

They introduced a hypermarket-to-population ration of 1:350,000. But I think the 'freeze' was lifted prematurely (in 2006) to allow for foreign investment and local participation.

Whatever, the buntings are up...just hope that the news is true. Kuantan need more than just a "Giant" and so many Tunas Manjas (**sigh**).

1. According to cinemaonline.com, I think it will be MBO.

2. Carrefour? I think the only 'big' local Carrefour outlet which is occupying in a shopping mall (meaning not to build their own hypermarket complex) is in Mid Valley Megamall. Other outlets at Plaza 393 Cheras, Alamanda, and Sri Petaling are extremely small.

3. Aeon shopping centers are the best format in this decade: fewer shopping floors, smaller concourse area, and simple layout.

BERITA HARIAN 29 JANUARI 2007

Mydin unjur catat jualan RM2 bilion tahun depan

Pavilion KL to shine with new 13-screen multiplex by GSC

By Cammy Zulkifli

The design is so AEON like especially with the side ramp to the roof top parking. I guess the earlier talks about JJ opening there was due to the design...

Its true Jusco was planning to open at the new mall, but it didnt work out with the klang based developer for some tenancy dispute. Instead, parkson grand took the spot immediately, knowing the potential of the mall and its current megamall outlet is not able to draw shoppers; (blame the mall ineffective design layout and poor management). If jusco fills up the space, TGV cineplex operator ll most likely to follow suit. Now, i see GSC is the only potential operator.

Alot of people were really looking forward to Jusco opening in Kuantan and the news that they were planning to open in ECM excites the local folks. Even the Japanese expatriates in Kuantan were looking forward to it as most of them travels regularly to KL to shop for Japanese stuffs. Seems like we may have to wait longer.

Regarding cineplex, somehow the mall management is keep a tight lip on who will be the operator. But there are hint of interests shown by MBO. GSC already operating 5 screens in Berjaya Megamall, so it'll be great if TVG or Cathay were to open...more option for Kuantan folks.

KUANTAN: Parkson Berjaya Megamall and Kuantan Plaza recently adopted the Taman Kejiranan at Jalan Telok Sisek here.

The project was part of the Kuantan chapter’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme in conjunction with Parkson’s 20th anniversary.

For you: Azizan (left) receiving a souvenir from Lee at Taman Kejiranan recently.
According to Parkson Berjaya Megamall senior store manager Nasir Sulaiman, this year’s programme came under the wing of Parkson Cares - ‘My Park.’

“Under the programme, Parkson will adopt parks to create environmental awareness, develop community responsibility and promote a healthy lifestyle,” he said during the launching of the CSR programme here recently.

Also present were Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) president Datuk Azizan Ahmad as well as Parkson Corporation managing director and CSR Parkson Cares chairman Lee Kong Huat.

Brand new: The reflexology path built by Parkson Corporation.
Parkson Berjaya Megamall also built a reflexology path in the park.

About 50 of its staff volunteered to clean, repaint and repair the playground and benches, too.

Nasir said that Parkson had also adopted parks in Ipoh, Kelana Jaya, Seremban and Sungai Petani.

“The campaign is a platform for us to play an active role to be a part of the local community and foster the spirit of neighbourliness.

“At the same time, involvement in community work nurtures the caring and sharing quality among our employees,” he said.

Nasir added that to date, Parkson’s CSR programme has raised RM16mil through various initiatives and charity events.

Money was raised through several means, including organising the Superstar Music Festivals and holding donation drives. Azizan, in his speech, said it was MPK and Parkson’s first collaboration.

“It is also one of the Local Agenda 21 programmes whereby the local authority, private sector and community work together to create a sustainable town,” he added.

Bindev to unveil final phase of Bukit Istana
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD

KUANTAN: Bindev Sdn Bhd is offering properties worth about RM70mil under the final phase of its upmarket and low-density residential project Bukit Istana.

The units would have a land size of 4,000 sq ft and built-up areas of 3,000 sq ft, said branch manager Lim Yoke Kim.

“The third and final phase will comprise 148 double-storey semi-detached units and four bungalows. The units are priced from RM480,000,” he said.

http://biz.thestar.com.my/archives/2008/4/5/business/b_9bukitistana.jpg
An artist’s impression of the phase three of Bukit Istana project. Inset is Lim Yoke Kim

The last phase boasts features such as high ceiling, high-panel glass windows to allow more natural sunlight into the house and three-phase electrical wiring.

A subsidiary of PJ Development Holdings Bhd (PJD), Bindev commenced construction of Bukit Istana during the 1997 financial crisis and has completed 150 bungalows, 226 double-storey semi-detached units and 72 single-storey units, of which about 92% are sold.

The project covers 54.4ha and has a gross development value of about RM250mil.

According to Lim, Bindev continued with the project during the financial crisis as it had confidence in the state’s house buying market.

“Our target is the professionals and top level management especially those working in the Gebeng industrial area and Kuantan Port,” he said in a recent interview.

On future projects, Lim said Bindev planned to develop two plots of land in Sungai Karang and Penor.

The Sungai Karang project was located along Kuantan’s popular beach belt and was close to Swiss Garden Resort and Spa, a hotel under PJD’s hotels, resort and leisure division, he added.

Construction on the mixed development project comprising condominiums, bungalows and semi-detached units on 8.8ha was expected to begin at year-end for completion in three years, he said.

Lim said the Penor project, also a mixed development venture, would be built on 400ha and completed over 20 years.

Construction would commence at the end of next year, he added.

On its future projects, Lim said BSB had plans to develop two plots of land in Sungai Karang and Penor.

The project in Sungai Karang was located along Kuantan’s popular beachbelt and was close to Swiss Garden Resort and Spa, a hotel under PJ Development’s hotels, resort and leisure division, he added.

He said it would involve a mixed development project comprising condominiums, bungalows and semi detached units on 8.8ha of land with construction expected to begin end of the year.

It would also have a clubhouse and would be the first feature to be constructed, he said, adding, the whole project was scheduled for completion in three years.

Lim said the Penor project, another mixed development venture, would be built on 400ha of land and to be completed in stages over 20 years.

Construction would commence end of next year, he added.

4 cawangan baru Carrefour

Project to give town an economic boost
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD

KUANTAN: The Bandar Putra project in Tanjung Lumpur comprising more than 3,300 residential and commercial properties is expected to give the fishing town a facelift and an economic boost.

Launched in February and costing about RM850mil, the project is being undertaken by Pasdec Holdings Bhd.

The project's mix of residential, commercial and recreational components comprising single- and double-storey semi-detached houses in 38 innovative designs will be developed on over 167ha of freehold land.

A new dual-carriageway currently under construction will, when completed, cut travelling time between Pekan and Kuantan by half.

Pasdec group managing director Yusof Ali Mohamed Zain said the project would be developed in stages over 10 years, with full completion scheduled in 2015.

“The first phase comprises 69 single- and double-storey medium-cost link houses costing RM146,888 onwards and 32 semi-detached single- and double-storey houses priced from RM245,888.''

Some 90% of the 209 medium-cost houses priced at RM63,888 that would be managed by the Pahang State Secretary housing unit had been sold, he told StarBiz on Monday.

Eight of the semi-detached double-storey houses were sold out one week after registration opened recently.

Yusof Ali also said Bandar Putra was expected to get a boost in value given that a leading healthcare provider had agreed to set up a hospital and a hotel there to tap the potential in health tourism in the east coast region.

“There is interest in trying to woo people from Thailand to come here to enjoy the tourism attractions and at the same time, have a medical check-up or seek treatment.

“Even now, people from Terengganu are flocking the private hospitals in Kuantan for medical treatment,” he added.

The companies were now at the final stage of discussions to iron out the details, he said, adding that an announcement would be made soon.

wont you think i big shopping mall without Mcd is not like shopping mall..?
Bro, for years, KLCC had no McD's... It was only after the former Scotts Picnic food court was renovated into Signatures that the Golden Arches finally came to the Double C...

AirAsia Sedia Penerbangan Harian Laluan Kuching-Macau Mulai 15 Mei

EAST COAST MALL (ECM Kuantan) OFFICIALLY OPEN TODAY 30 APRIL 2008
any pic??

Carrefour opened on 26 April - earlier than everyone else. Medium sized (just below 10,000sq ft, I was told). Overall, the whole mall was still in a mess. Still got alot to be done to catch the 30th April soft opening. Understand that 80% of the shops will be opened then.

Many shops at finishing touches stage, but others just only started to renovate.

Except for where Carrefour is, the floors are dirty and the environment is very dusty.

Inside, it doesn't looked as big as it does on the outside. But it's still quite nice.

Will try to post some pics later (after the excitement cools down). The area is crazily congested. Won't want to go near there for at least 1 week :)

look very much like carrefour melaka. How many storey is the carrefour kuantan?

I hav to go east coast mall today. so many people there. carrefour take 2 storey of the building at 1st and 2nd floor.

tp macam pelik sket la sbb bhgn groceries and wt market is situated at 2nd floor. 1st floor tu pulak bahagian DIY, pakaian & elektrik.

so macam agak menysahkan sbb biasa kalau pegi shopin, kita akan naik tingkat atas dulu & then baru pegi tingkat bawah. so kalau pegi carrefour east coast mall, anda kenalah pusing2 dulu kat tingkat bawah & 1st floor, then lastly baru la pegi shopin barabg dapur kat 2nd floor carrefour. (kalau ada barang dapur nak beli la).

Thats got to do with shoppers traffic diversion strategy. Because most shoppers tend to do groceries, they divert the traffic to move up so that the upper floor ll get better patronage. Takes alamanda putrajaya for example, the carrefour upper floor is dry market but looks quite deserted. So at this kuantan branch, they do the reverse in the hope the shoppers ll continue to do shopping at lower floor. After all, we human being are tend to be lazy to going up instead moving down for ease.

Parkson buka 5 cawangan baru

Turut hadir, Pengurus Besar Parkson, Raymond Teo.

KUANTAN: Supermarker chain Carrefour Malaysia opened its first store in the east coast here yesterday.

The two-level hypermarket is located at the East Coast Mall, the new shopping complex here.

It covers an area of 70,000 square feet, providing modern shopping facilities including those for the wheelchair-bound.

It is the company's 14th store in the country.

Anyone noticed? All escalators in ECM are not the normal "step" type but the inclined travelators type. This type of escalators takes up slightly more space, but management should be commended for making ECM a mall friendly to the physically challenged. I think this is a first. Kudos to ECM!
