Hi! I'm a Filipino forumer and I want to go to Johor Bahru from Singapore. What is the best way to get there? Is there an immigration/checkpoint area? And how much will I have to spend to get there (transportation and tax)?

^ Yes there is a checkpoint. For less than a dollar you can get a bus ride to JB from SG from Kranji MRT station. Never take the taxi as it'll cost SG$40! ;)

Johor Bahru is really sux. It is just a City of Crime. The whole city is not safe, filled with robbers and thieves. I am really embarrassed as a Johor Bahru resident to tell you this. Last Monday, I was robbed near the Overhead Bridge (Towards JB CheckPoint) besides the City Square by three KNIFE hold Chinese shit guys. I was terrified at that moment. I got two minor scratches caused by the knife and lost my phone after that. JB is really unsafe. Tourists should less often come to JB.

^^glad u didnt get seriously hurt, its is a bad experience to b mugged, the fear & depression can last for weeks, friends & family can help u get over this mugging. jb has its share of sensational crimes but i have been 2 jb many times & have found it safe, but what is important is always b aware of ur surroundings whether u r a local or tourist. i was robbed in london (money & passport), u get over it & learn to b more careful.

Everywhere is unsafe.It is impossible for a place to be safe.

avoid walking around jalan wong ah fook and other place that are close to city square area.These areas are highly populated by muggers and very notorious.Avoid walking at segget walk,tan hiok nee walk....the best is try not to walk at Johor Bahru.Infact there's nothing to see around there except city square mall.I would suggest to the Johor bahru city council to put policemen around the city.Everywhere.Like beijing china,alomost everypart of the city u can see policemen wearing green in colour......i think it's a good idea.Wat do you think????.

Actually JB is quite good place in my own view (not include terrible crimes). I also went there for two times, but very luckily, i was safe there. However, live in high criminal rates city, we should pay more attention to avoid become next victim.

^ wow.. i was brought up in jb in the 80s, the place was superb. and i do blve jb is still a nice place.. say y not joining Rakan Cop then (or was it Rakan Polis??).. but as all of u had said, one needs to be alert and attentive kat mana mana pun, not necessary in jb...

Wah sounds so unsafe though I've walked around JB day and night and never encountered any. I mean I noticed old makciks walking around with their bags at night. That shows how safe in general a city is.
I nearly got mugged in KL but luckily I ran away because of assuming muggers are never prepared for chasing. Strictly depends on the area.

I got mugged and injured in PJS, guys careful when youre there.

Can someone do me a favour please? I just wonder if anyone could take some pictures for me of some place I've been to when I was in JB last year. I did not take any pictures as it did not seem interesting to me, but now I'd like to have some. :D

Oh, the places I don't know the name of LOL. Perhaps this will help: From the city (City Square) we drove past the construction area of the new immigration building, then passed the area of the Sultan Palace, and then you could see Singapore on the right in the distance. Then there was a sharp left turn, petrol station on right. Think the suburbs name was Taman Iskandar... not too sure though. Can anyone help me with this little information and if yes, perhaps take some pictures along this route, esp. the ending? That's be really great :)

What do you see on the left of the city square? Roads are constantly changing there due to construction, i dont really understand where youre heading to.

Yes exactly, it was east of the city centre. Polo ground? May be, loads of green grass around. And if you went further you got to some bridge going over a river... hmmm I could try to find the place on google earth though ...

The road is very narrow until it reaches the sharp turn. The petrol station on the left could be Shell. At the end of that road just before you hit the junction, there are many constructions are going on the left. The bridge could be Permas Bridge?

I'm talking about that road going north/south at this place - i hope haha, looks so different from above :) So if anyone has some pictures from this one - from about that construction area around the city center to where that street gets narrower and theres loads of green areas around - if anyone has some, I'd be really happy :D

Few mistakes from above.

The road is very narrow until it reaches the sharp LEFT-turn. There is a Shell station on the right before you turn right into Taman Iskandar. At the end of that road just before you hit the junction, there are many constructions are going on the RIGHT.

I was in Johor Bahru last summer on my way to Singapore. Now like any local Malaysian or Singaporean, I took the bus from KL, which was sooo comfortable that the 5 hour journey passed by soo quickly. It's not bad but there isn't much goin on if you want to compare it to KL. I've heard a lot about the crime but I haven't experience it myself. I think the area can be developed more as it's the first city that you'll pass by if you're coming from Singapore. They definately need a new checkpoint though hehe.

^^. Glad to hear from you. I dont know about crime though. Well, I also find it hard to find a reason to visit Johor Bahru when KL offers almost everything you can find in other Malaysian cities. It's a great city though. If that Disneyland rumour is true, then Johor will really stand out from the rest.

welcome, yes, jb is a very working class city & suffers from being next to sg but its slowly evolving & i think can rise above its working class roots soon. The new CIQ is nearly complete & will b connected to the causeway, what a change that will make

Jaybee needs a little bit of skyscrapers..then it's perfect...And the present old dirt looking custom and immigration complex should be demilished and build something like a marina or a bay like Danga Bay or a shopping street like bukit bintang.IT will be like shopping by the sea.And the causeway bridge,shpuld add a little bit of colourful lights at night.Make it futuristic.Lazer lights too can be used in the city.This will make it even more futuristic.As johor bahru now looks really beautiful at night,the government can set up a boat ride.Tourists can board on to the boat and it will bring them round the sea passing by Johor bahru skyline.This can be another tourist attractions for Johore.Not to mention,the boat can also have a restaurant where tourist can enjoy the JB skyline while dining.Johor has alot of potentials on becoming a great city.....

Very Controversial. Yes thousands of our countrymen brave the heat and pollution of the causeway to go work in Singapore. These workers do bring in pretty good paycheques to spend back in Malaysia. Other than that about 4500 students cross the causeway daily to study in the republic.

I am an American from Oklahoma, aged 60.

I've just discovered the make Malaysia second home visa offered to retirees. I had been considering Cebu Philippines for retirement. Now Johor Bahru has caught my eye for a number of reasons.

Housing looks to be reasonable. Can I really get a nice 1 or 2 bedroom condo for $1500RM? How much for phone, electricity, cable tv?

The Singapore airport offers me a travel hub for flights back to the USA, Honk Kong, Viet Nam, Taiwan, Thailand, etc at lower fares than the Philippines. That means more visits per year. The MM2H visa makes entry and exit easy.

Do many Americans, Canadians, Europeans retire in JB?? The Philippinos are very friendly people. I've heard that the people of Malaysia are too. That would be important as nobody wants to live where he/she can't make new friends and feel welcome.

Thanks for any responses you may have to offer. Your opinions are welcome.

Thank you Lastresorter. Danga Bay looks like a property well worth investigating. A resort type setting and close in to the city of JB. Thank you for that link. I see some standard units are available for rent, which I prefer over ownership.

Another question, if I may. What do utility bills run each month? Would $240RM be adequate for electric, $80RM for cable, $80RM for internet and another $80RM for a telephone land line be close for budgeting?

Hi Drew, the amounts you quoted there should be more than sufficient for your living expenses. However, I do not think that JB has Cable yet. There are satellite TV and other modes of internet services though. Therefore if you still want to tune in to CNN you can always do so. Regarding rental of apartments: yes, $1500 Ringgit would get you a pretty decent pad with 3 bedrooms. You gotta shop a little bit more though. I would suggest looking up realty websites to determine the rental rates and ranges. Just google: Johor Bahru property rental...there should be a host of sites for u to browse through.

Looks like a pretty decent deal to me, and near the HYATT hotel, perhaps some wining and dining? ;)

Above all, the most satisfying fact about living in Malaysia would be the relatively low daily expenses for food, domestic travels etc. (U'd probably be 4 times richer than when u are in the States) Most expats live around the Klang valley region (Kuala Lumpur to Klang) and Penang. However, JB does have its share of foreigners living here. I don't see too many Canadians or Americans (somehow North Americans are not big on Malaysia, probably cuz the media promotes Thailand and the Phillippines more). However you can see a fair share of Brits, Aussies and Japanese residing in the city. I guess due to Malaysia's Commonwealth heritage, Britons and Australians are more familiar, and therefore have more attachment, to Singapore and Malaysia...The Malaysian parliamentary system is based on the British Common Law, hence there are many similarities to other Commonwealth nations, unlike the Phillippines, which would be more American. One more thing that u have to take note of: U drive on the right hand side here, something you have to be more familiar with....Good luck to you!

On top of the good things about living in JB is that you get to travel to Singapore easily, without having to pay for the high living expenses across the Causeway.

Thanks Vince and Lastresorter. WOW, JB compares very well against Cebu. In Cebu I was looking at a 1 bedroom or a small 2 bedroom apartment of about 60 sqm without facilities (pool). In JB, for the same money, I can go to a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment, 90 sqm, with pool. The extra room can be used for visiting friends and family.

Utilities may be the same or just a bit higher. However, like you mentioned, food costs are very low. I can afford to dine out more often.

How is transportation in JB? How much does a taxi charge to drop it's flag and per km?? Does the city have a good bus system?

Hi Drew, not too sure about the taxi/bus system and charges in JB. However, you might want to consider buying a car in Malaysia, which can be quite cheap. That is, if you have to travel around JB and the Peninsular often. If you have to commute often, it would be cheaper to buy a car than to take public transport in the long run.

Malaysian gas prices are said to be one of the lowest in the region (it's still partly subsidised by the govt) :lol:

Malaysia must be the best kept secret, at least in America. I can live much nicer in JB than I can in America, even in cheap, rural Oklahoma.

Vince, you must have been busy. Nice pictures. Notice even the older areas of JB look to be well maintained and clean. Impressive.

I still remember a cruel joke made by my friends as they crossed the causeway from Singapore into JB- they akin JB as a village prostitute luring the customers out of their civilised towns (Singapore); as JB back then was like Mexico to Texas... image-wise too JB somewhat propagate this prejudice. Certainly my friends would eat their words now. JB is rapidly growing and surely will regain her rightful place as the pride of the south....

in10cities, JB has indeed grown but still needs a lot of catch up to do. My dad used to refer to JB as "cowboy town" when we first moved there back in the 80s.

JOHOR BARU: The state is to get a RM2 billion waterfront development which will set new standards in quality living and international standard leisure and recreational facilities.




Called the Lido Boulevard, the project is yet another private finance initiative to leverage on the Federal Government’s major development plans for South Johor.

It will also complement Danga Bay, another major waterfront project which has taken off in a big way, and is drawing huge crowds.

The Johor Government yesterday signed a land development agreement with Central Malaysian Properties Sdn Bhd (CMP) to spearhead this latest project along a three-kilometre stretch of Lido Beach here.

CMP is a company linked to business tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan. Another major shareholder is lawyer-turned- entrepreneur Datuk Chan Tien Ghee.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman told reporters after the weekly State Executive Council Meeting yesterday that Lido Boulevard would not only change the Johor Baru skyline, but also raise its profile internationally.

The developers, he said, were out to design and reposition Johor Baru as an international gateway to Malaysia, with a myriad of iconic buildings and top-notch public amenities and facilities.

"The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study is now underway. We expect work on the project to kick-start by the end of the year," he said.

Spread over 50ha, the site stretches from the present abandoned Lot 1 shopping mall to the office of the Harbour Master here.

This waterfront will be reclaimed to make way for the development, with the landfill areas stretching between 90 metres and 400 metres into the Johor Straits. When completed, a quarter of the total land area will be preserved as "green lungs".

The development, to be spread over eight years, will comprise upmarket apartments of 18 to 26 storeys each, an all-suites hotel, a shopping mall, office blocks and a multi-storey public car park complex.

Also incorporated in the development are several exciting public components, including a RM40 million Cultural Centre with a seating capacity of 600, and special studios for training purposes.

Also on the drawing board is Heritage Boulevard — a bazaar-like retail centre for locals to showcase their food, handicrafts, clothing and other traditional items — and an indoor snow park, which will be the first in the region.

"The development blueprint is unique in that Lido Boulevard is being designed to become the Garden City of Johor Baru, with extensive landscaped gardens, water fountains and park-like facilities.

"The entire green lung areas will come complete with closed-circuit television cameras and police posts for added security and safety," said a sources close to CMP.

Hi! I'm a Filipino forumer and I want to go to Johor Bahru from Singapore. What is the best way to get there? Is there an immigration/checkpoint area? And how much will I have to spend to get there (transportation and tax)?

I took the MRT there and walked across the causeway :) Just so I can say, "I walked to Malaysia!" But you can take a bus too. Yes there is an Immigration checkpoint.

Six-lane coastal highway to be built in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A six-lane coastal highway will be built starting from Danga Bay to the Johor State New Administrative Centre (JSNAC) in Bandar Nusajaya.

Estimated to cost between RM400 and RM500mil, the 11km highway will ease traffic flows between Johor Baru city centre and the JSNAC.

Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mohd Auzir Mohd Tahir said the project was already in the final stage of planning.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would announce the details of the highway, including which company would build it.

The announcement is part of the unveiling of the South Johor Economic Region (SJER) masterplan by Johor's Sultan Iskandar on Nov 4.

Auzir said the highway would pass through Sungai Danga and Sungai Melayu with three big bridges and five small ones crossing the rivers.

"Upon its completion in three years time, motorists need not have to go through Perling to get to then new administrative centre,'' Auzir said on Sunday.

He said the upgrading works on the Perling-Pasir Gudang highway would be completed soon and motorists have a choice or either using the former or the new coastal highway.

Presently, motorists coming from Johor Baru and Pasir Gudang still have to pass through the Pasir Gudang-Perling highway to get to Bandar Nusajaya.

"We also have plans to introduce water taxi services from Danga Bay to the JSNAC to complement the new coastal highway,'' said Auzir.

He added that other forms of public transportation to JSNAC would include stage buses for the public and shuttle buses for civil servants.

"There will also be shuttle service within the Centre, and we are also considering plans to extend the monorail (from Johor Baru) to Nusajaya," he said.

Auzir was speaking during a media briefing on the on-going construction works of the JSNAC at the company's office in Bukit Indah, Bandar Nusajaya.

Also present at the briefing were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and the newly appointed state secretary Datuk Abdul Latiff Yusof.

Auzir said the phase one of the development, which comprises the Sate Assembly complex, Menteri Besar and State Secretary Complex, Mahkota Square and State government department complexes, is already 30% completed.

He said some RM400mil would be invested on the phase one and the buildings were expected to be completed towards the last-quarter of 2007.

JOHOR BARU: The Johor State New Administrative Centre (JSNAC) in Nusajaya will be ready next September.

It is an integrated development involving state and federal government department offices and has been described as the Jewel of the Crown of Nusajaya.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who visited the site yesterday, was briefed on the JSNAC development which spans 109 hectares of well-landscaped gardens and parks.

The developer of JSNAC is Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between the state government and UEM Land Sdn Bhd.

Cahaya Jauhar chief executive officer Mohd Auzir Mohd Tahir said JSNAC, to be developed at RM400 million, was envisioned to portray the image of a modern and progressive administration.

"It is strategically located within Malaysia’s new economic growth corridor — the South Johor Economic Region.

"JSNAC has been planned to create an open and campus-like environment with ample gardens and parks while the buildings are designed to exhibit the best of Johor architecture," he said.

JSNAC is located next to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) at the western end of the primary development corridor that links here through Danga to Nusajaya and PTP to the west, with Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat on the east.

Phase one of the development comprises the state assembly hall, Menteri Besar and State Secretary complex, Dataran Mahkota and state government department complexes.

Phase two will comprise a mosque and state government staff quarters, while phase three, the federal government department complexes.

Dataran Mahkota is a large open plaza of 200-metre diameter which will be the venue for ceremonial functions and grand parades. It will be bound by a memorial wall and an amphitheatre.

Development works under phase one began in October 2004.

The overall development is part of the government’s efforts to transform the state into a business-friendly haven for investment, with improved facilities and connectivity, and also increased efficiency in public administration.

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Phase one of Nusajaya, the Johor Government's new administrative centre, is slated for completion in September next year, Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said.

Dubbed as Nusajaya's "Jewel of the Crown", the ultra-modern administrative centre is packaged under the RM400 million Phase One, he said.

Covering 9,600 hectares, it is the single largest private sector-initiated development in Southeast Asia, he said after visiting the project development company Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture firm between the state government and UEM Land Sdn Bhd.

Besides the state administrative building, Phase one comprises the state legislative assembly building, Menteri Besar's office, state secretariat complex and Mahkota Square. Construction work started in October 2004.

Upon completion, Nusajaya will be an integrated development of state and federal government department offices, with 10.9 hectares of landscaped gardens and parks.

The administrative centre is located about 25KM from Johor Baharu and nearby Port of Tanjung Pelepas at the western end of the South Johor Economic Region (SJER), the primary development corridor.

The SJER is also linked to the east through Danga, Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat.

Most of the buildings' design are based on the Johor-Malay architecture and Moorish-Andalusian model which are reminiscent of the existing state government office building in Bukit Timbalan here.

"When fully completed, the new state administrative centre will be in a better position to offer support to businesses in the state," he added.

jUST bACK from holiday for 10dayss, went to JB and Singapore for vacation...from my point Of view JB do really have potential to become a world class city but what i observed JB need to improve on its road conditions..potholes everywhere! City planning is improving but recent flood problems kind of a knock on head despite the grand plan for JB.:) but still good times ahead for Johorean.Cheersss

To be held on Monday at the RTM Auditorium in Jalan Tasek Utara, the concert will feature the MPO under the baton of English conductor John Georgiadis, who has conducted concerts and recordings worldwide with many top orchestras.

The concert programme will include popular works by Johann Strauss I and II; Eduard and Josef Strauss, including the “Emperor Waltz (Op.410), By the Beautiful Blue Danube (Op.314) and Radetzky March (Op.228).

“This year’s offering of A Viennese New Year will give the people of Johor a chance to experience the traditional New Year concerts which take place in artistic capitals around the world,” said Yap.

Dating back to 1946, such traditional New Year concerts were performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at Vienna’s famous Musikverien and are now an annual fixture in the international music calendar.

Besides pieces from Strauss, the audience will be introduced to lesser-known composers of the same era, such as the Vision de l’Orient Waltz (Op.147), a piano piece by Iosif Ivanovici, and Der Zauber der Montur (Op.493) by Carl Michael Ziehrer.

JSPA president Yap Siong Cheng said that 20% of the nett proceeds from the concert would be donated to Tabung Kebajikan Barisan Nasional Johor Baru in aid of the flood victims.

“The floods brought misery to many families who have lost many personal items and home appliances,” he said.

U r welcome guys. The ugly flats are government flats for low-income earners and MPJB does not bother to maintain or repaint them often. That is the problem of Malaysia....maintenance. Cities may have the best infrastructure, but if money keeps on being spent on grandoise projects (like the Iskandar whatever thinghy), then not enough goes around to maintain the existing facilities.

JB look like KL. Juz luv it. Hope that Melaka will look like that one day.

Argory, actually those pictures were lifted from flickr.com. I don't live in JB right now, but will be back in April! The pictures show up really well, and that is due to the fact that the air quality was real good when those pictures were taken. Pollution is cut down during the monsoon season. Haha, I guess "rural" Singapore means a place where the number of trees and Lalang grass (ok no more Lalang grass even, Singapore is too manicured) outnumber the people. Subangite and Argory, thanks for the encouragement, I will try to post more when there is an opportunity. Redstone, there is a city hall scheme for the colours of JB shophouses (especially the old ones in the city centre). Property owners are instructed to adhere to the standards. Personally, I do not think those pastel colours are that great, but they are better than the former run-down facades of before when those buildings were often neglected. Similar colour schemes can be found in other Johor jurisdictions like Muar, etc.

Facelift for JB under waterfront project

JOHOR BARU: A vibrant, exciting and colourful city offering cultural, musical and other entertainment shows, with world-class venues and facilities.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said this is what Johor Baru would be when the integrated waterfront project under the Iskandar Regional Development plan is completed in the next five years.

The city will have venues to host world-class shows and performances by big names in the world of entertainment.

A calendar of events is already being drawn up in association with internationally renowned event managers and promoters, who will aggressively market them to draw audiences from all over the region, said Ghani.

"Currently, every time there is an extended weekend public holiday, there is an exodus of people from Johor Baru to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or other cities because there is nothing to do here.

"But this will be a thing of the past when the planned integrated waterfront developments in Iskandar come up, in the next three to five years, Ghani said when launching the annual Chap Goh Meh celebrations at Danga Bay.

Also present were MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and Johor MCA chief Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek.

The event was organised by the state government in association with MCA, the Johor Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, supported by the newly established Iskandar Regional Development Authority.

More than 20,000 people thronged Danga Bay for the celebration of the 15th day of the Lunar New Year.

The festivities started with a performance by the six-member girl group, Ironic Band, followed by a 40- minute show by the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe.

Other top local Chinese entertainers, included Huang Yi Fei, Chew Sin Hueu and rising singing sensation Nicholas Teo.

The public was entertained by lion dance troupes, stilt-walkers, Chinese drummers, performers dressed in costumes of Chinese deities, including the God of Prosperity, Bhangra and Zapin dancers and artistes from the Royal London Circus.

"We have given the event a touch of multi-ethnicity with Malay, Indian and other musical and dance performances to make it a truly Malaysian celebration," Ghani said.

The VIPs later took part in the tossing of yee sang — the traditional raw fish salad served during Chinese New Year for abundance, prosperity and vigour in the coming year. The highlight of the celebrations was a 10-minute fireworks display.

Under the Iskandar, the entire five-kilometre stretch of the Johor Baru waterfront is to be developed into a new urban centre featuring upmarket hotels, an exhibition and convention centre, high-rise commercial offices, upmarket condominiums and open spaces for stage shows and entertainment.

It is expected to draw investors from around the world, especially the Middle East and Singapore.

Danga Bay is the front-runner of this multi-billion ringgit development. About RM500 million has been spent since 2000 to bring life to this part of town.

It is now the scene of cultural and entertainment shows on weekends.

JOHOR BARU: Nusajaya will have a uniquely Malaysian tropical paradise theme park. It is said to be the first of its kind in the world, and it is set to become an international holiday destination.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the theme park was designed to embrace and reflect our tropical climate, and would be distinctly Malaysian in design.

He did not disclose who the operators would be, but mentioned that Khazanah Nasional Berhad was in the final stages of discussion with international theme park operators.

"It is significantly different from the theme parks in the US, France, Hong Kong or Australia. It will create a buzz in the international tourism industry," Ghani said after chairing the weekly state exco meeting at Bukit Timbalan.

"The state government and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) will monitor the ticket pricing so as to appeal to domestic tourists," he added.

The proposed theme park will be built on part of a 970ha site earmarked for entertainment and leisure activities, which include hotels, resorts and golf courses.

The theme park forms part of an international destination resort, one of seven signature developments at Nusajaya, which in turn is one of five flagship zones under the Iskandar Development Region.

Ghani said the theme park would be the main tourist attraction in Iskandar.

It has been reported that Universal Studios is not in the running to operate the park and that the operator will be announced before the end of the year.

Nusajaya township sits on a sprawling 9,696ha, and will become home to 500,000 people over the next 20 years.

JOHOR BARU: The quality of life in Johor has shown signs of stability and improvement in the last five years, said Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

The quality of life composite index had risen from 0.65 in 2002 to 0.69 points last year, he said.

Among others, the factors used to monitor the quality of life were economic, social, community, physical and environmental development.

“For instance, the three indicators chosen for the economic development component are poverty rate, average household income and inflation rate,” he said.

Abdul Ghani said the social components covered areas like education, health, safety and housing, including taking into account student to teacher and population to crime ratios.

He said the figures were based on the state Economic/Social Report as well as the state Quality of Life Index 2006 Report published by the state through the Economic Planning Unit.

According to Abdul Ghani, two benchmarks were used to calculate the quality of life among Johoreans.

For instance, the quality of water in rivers and seas is measured according to international benchmarks in developed countries including monitoring systems used by bodies like the World Health Organisation.

Abdul Ghani said more localised standards were used to measure quality of life when it came to the provision of religious places of worship.

“On the whole, even though the quality of life in Johor is better on the majority of indicators compared to other states, we still have room for improvement,” he said.

Among the areas to concentrate on, he said, were increasing household income, and reducing poverty, crime, road accident rates and inflation.

JOHOR BARU: The city hopes to attract thousands of tourists in conjunction with Visit Johor Baru Week, which started on Tuesday and will run until Dec 2.

Among the highlights are the Ninth Asia Pacific Wataboshi Music Festival and Johor Baru International Scrabble Competition.

Johor Baru City Council mayor Datuk Mohd Naim Nasir said 10 countries would participate in the festival including Japan, China, South Korea, India and Australia.

He said the scrabble competition had attracted 108 participants, of whom 98 are international contestants.

“The contest is divided into two categories, the Master and Open and will run from Nov 28 to Dec 2,” he said.

Mohd Naim added that there would also be a handicraft exhibition and sale, cultural performances, dancing, singing and fishing contests.

JB to go ahead with painting of buildings

JOHOR BARU: Plans to colour-coordinate buildings in the city will continue despite the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) receiving complaints from some quarters.

MBJB mayor Datuk Mohd Naim Nasir said the council decided to go ahead with the plans after meeting some building owners in the past two weeks and finding that the majority were supportive of the idea.

“Johor Baru is part of the Iskandar Development Region and we must make the city more vibrant and clean.

“One way is to repaint premises along main roads such as Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Skudai, Jalan Tebrau and Jalan Tampoi,” he said.

He added that six contractors had been short-listed for the paint job, which is expected to commence early next year.

He said that RM3mil would be advanced by MBJB to kick-start the project, adding that building owners would have to repay the painting costs either by instalments or in full.

“If anyone refuses to pay, the bill will be added to their assessment as MBJB has the right to ask building owners to repaint their premises,” he said.

Big upgrade on Komtar

JOHOR BARU: Johor Corp (JCorp) is allocating RM55mil to upgrade the retail area of Komtar, one of the earliest commercial buildings in the central business district, in a move to attract more shoppers back to the 29-year-old building.*

A well-known shopping centre in the 1980s and early 90s, Komtar started losing its shine with the opening of Johor Baru City Square mall next door and Plaza Angsana about 5km away.*

“We have to keep up with the times if Komtar wants to steal the limelight again,” JCorp chief executive officer Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim said at the launch of the upgrading work recently.*

Renovation work on the retail area has started and will take 18 months to complete.*

The retail area will be expanded to 15,280 sq m from 12,056 sq m currently and the podium area will have an “eco-centric” theme.*

“We have started marketing the 'new Komtar' and are currently talking with a few potential anchor tenants,” said Ali, adding that 27 of the 58 tenants had agreed to return in 2009.*

He said shoppers could expect big names in the retail industry to open outlets here. *

Also in the pipeline were plans to develop the 1.2ha open car park area beside the building into a shopping mall and an office tower.*

Ali said the upgrading work and the new development plan would boost the image of Komtar again in view of its strategic location in the Iskandar Development Region. *

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Johor is expected to register an economic growth beyond seven percent this year, boosted by positive outlook for the Iskandar Development Region (IDR), its Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said today.

Speaking to Bernama TV here today, Abdul Ghani said the IDR, a new economic region for southern Peninsular Malaysia, has been a popular destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing.

Covering a land area of 2,217 square kilometres or three times the size of Singapore, the IDR's targeted sectors are logistics, healthcare, creative industries, financial advisory and consulting services, educational services and tourism-related services.

According to Abdul Ghani, the manufacturing sector will be an impetus for Johor's growth as the state will remain the foremost destination for FDI in Malaysia, accounting for about 30 percent flowing into the country.

"We are happy to be a recipient in the last three or four years of FDI in manufacturing in the form of capital and technology," he said.

Abdul Ghani said another areas that would receive investment is the services sector.

"It would be in the form of several clusters," he said.

"At the same time, there is also a pick-up in the construction sector and the commodity sector remains strong," he added.

Asked about new investments in the IDR, Abdul Ghani said: "We hope that there will be several interesting announcements to be made by end of this year but I am not prepared to announce them now."

The state government was at the final stage of negotiations on investments related to the development of the educational hub, health hub and logistics in the IDR, he said.

"We anticipate the IDR to be another area where there is strong impetus of growth in context of the country as a whole for those reasons," he said.

Turning to the plan to enhance the transportation system in Johor, Abdul Ghani said the state government was currently focusing on works to improve the present road system in the IDR.

"At the moment, immediate works are being done to enhance the present road system and these are almost completed," he said.

Abdul Ghani said the state government was also looking at implementing a modern transportation system called the Metro System in the IDR to provide better accessibility.

"We are also working closely to connect the Metro System with Singapore's MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) across Johor by virtue of the ministerial committee between Malaysia and Singapore," he said.

On the Senai International Airport, Abdul Ghani said with development of the IDR and the open skies policy between Malaysia and Singapore effective next year, the airport could become a hub for passengers and cargoes.

He said the airport had gone through a RM200 million redevelopment which involved extending its terminal while the runway would be extended later based on the allocation given by the federal government.

Strategically located in the IDR, the airport is set to become a major hub in future.

oh ya comments: i think JB is not as bad as it seems to be (the fact that i walked all the way from Daratan Bandaraya back to the city center without any problems...) althoung i'm sorry to have to say that the city is not quite interesting as a tourist destination when compared coming from Singapore. however, the city center is not bad at all, it has some nice sidewalks and getting around the city center is not much of a hassle.

Yupp ..I truly agree that JB still lack for development indeed eventhough it is one of the major cities of Malaysia!

JB,,,i don't think it's one of a tourist destination coz there's realllly nothing here!,..the city is only famous for its food and shoppping/.

SP Setia to go big in commercial properties

It has lined up two projects in Shah Alam and Johor

PETALING JAYA: SP Setia Bhd wants to go big in commercial retail properties to take advantage of the strong demand for quality commercial developments in the Klang Valley and other parts of the country.

The property group, which already has a well-established name in the residential sector, is eager to make a name for itself as a serious commercial retail player with the line-up of interesting projects.

Group managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin is excited about the prospects for the commercial sector and is seeking potential partners, including those from overseas, to undertake projects.

The biggest project on the drawing board is Setia City in the company's 2,524-acre Setia Alam township in Shah Alam.

The mega commercial project on 150 acres will have office towers, recreational destinations, retail malls and residential components.

Liew said SP Setia was working with a panel of architects and consultants to develop an iconic development in Setia City.

“As an eco-themed development, it will be energy saving with avenues to generate its own electricity for self sustainability,” he added.

The project, with an estimated gross development value of at least RM10bil, will take five to 10 years. Construction is scheduled to start in the first half of next year.

To kick-start the development, SP Setia has identified Sydney-based Land Lease Australia as its partner to undertake the development of a retail mall.

The mall, on 40 acres, would initially have a gross lettable area of 500,000 sq ft, which could later be expanded to 1.5 million sq ft. It will take two years to complete.

Next on the list is Setia EcoCity in the Iskandar Development Region in Johor. The project, to be developed on 80 acres, is scheduled to kick off in 2009 for completion in five years.

“These two projects will establish SP Setia as a serious commercial property developer and widen the company's earning base in the coming years,” Liew said.

The company is also eyeing a number of commercial retail projects in the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur. These projects are expected to start within two years.

SP Setia also has other ongoing commercial projects in the Klang Valley, including the RM167mil Setia Avenue shop-offices in Setia Alam and the RM800mil Setia Walk in Puchong.

JB benefits from the good air-quality control in singapore, hence pictures taken of the city is usually clear, with white puffy clouds and blue sky. Sadly, other Malaysian cities do not enjoy such air-quality anymore. Just look at pictures taken of Penang and KL these days and you can see that they are often hazy. With the unchecked development of JB, we may face suffocation one day too.

Johor Baru prison reopened to house remanded detainees

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru prison has been reopened and is expected to temporarily house remanded detainees from the Simpang Renggam detention centre for the next two to three years.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said the move was to ease congestion at Simpang Renggam.

“This is also to facilitate the transportation of remand prisoners to court since the prison (situated 1.5km away) is so much nearer.

“Once the new prison is ready, we

will hand this place back to the state

government,” he said in a telephone interview.

On Jan 2, 90 detainees were brought to the Johor Baru prison, commonly referred to as the Ayer Molek prison.

Fu said residents, office workers and students need not fear for their safety and security.

“We have very tight security measures, including anti-climb fences, electronic doors and scheduled patrols,” he said. The ratio of guards to prisoners was also estimated to be one guard to every four or five detainees.

Fu said that with the overcrowding

issue addressed, prison officials could conduct rehabilitation programmes for detainees.

He also explained that the Simpang Renggam detention centre would then house suspected drug dealers detained under the Dangerous Drugs Act as well as those remanded under the Public Order and Prevention of Crime Act.

Fu added that overcrowding at the Sungai Buloh prison would also be taken care of once new prisons, including the ones in Machang, Kelantan and Bentong, Pahang, were built.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said the prison would also function as a police lockup by next month or March.

The Johor Baru prison, which is over 100 years old, was converted to a museum after it was closed on Sept 1, 2005.

JOHOR BARU: Police busted 19 gangs involved in kidnapping, hijack cases and armed robbery last year.

Johor Police Chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hussin Ismail said police busted eight gangs with the arrest of 32 people involved in hijack cases.

“To date, 12 have been charged. We also arrested six people for being involved in kidnappings last year.

“Three of them have been charged,” he said in his speech before launching a rank presentation ceremony at the State Police Headquarters on Friday.

DCP Hussin said some 32 foreigners were arrested for various robberies and theft last year.

On the overall crime rate, he said that the figures had shown a minor drop of 0.55%.

“On the other hand, our crime solving rate has shot up to 45.4%,” he said, adding that the increased in police presence and patrol cars contributed to the success.

DCP Hussin said the additional crime prevention programmes had improved cooperation between the police and the public.

Among the programmes were the Community Policing Project, Safe City Campaign and Friday meetings with the police chief.

DCP Hussin said that Johor police had about 500 MPVs statewide with 300 stationed in Johor Baru, Nusajaya and Seri Alam.

“The new police district headquarters in Kulai will be launched next month while the Ledang, Muar, headquarters will be operational in April.

“We hope to increase our effectiveness in serving the public with these new police districts,” he said.

^^ Thanks Ceass for those photos. After more than a decade they are finally going to continue. I was hoping that they would not demolish the structure as it had been standing there being weathered, withstanding the elements and corroded for 10 years! Again good news I've always thought this is an iconic building.

Johor Buzz: Road detour alert for drivers

ON Jan 29, motorists heading to Johor Baru and Singapore will have to make a detour through the city to facilitate the placement of a beam to connect Johor Baru Sentral and the City Square shopping complex.

Those going to the republic from Jalan Tun Abdul Razak will have to make a U-turn after the Caltex petrol station and go around Kompleks Komtar through a slip road.

Traffic will emerge from Jalan Wong Ah Fook before going back to Jalan Tun Abdul Razak (refer to map).

The road diversion will be from 12.30am on Jan 29 to 4.30pm the next day.

Public Works Department construction director for the Gerbang Selatan Bersepadu (GSB) project said the diversion was to facilitate the setting up of a pre-cast beam.
Zulkifly Madon said the one-way Jalan Wong Ah Fook would become two-way.

"Two lanes of the four-lane road will be for traffic heading to town and Singapore and another two lanes for traffic heading to Skudai and the north."

Zulkifly said traffic policemen would be stationed to help direct traffic.

Mayland plans RM1.2b KL, Johor projects

MALAYSIA LAND Properties Sdn Bhd (Mayland) will launch properties with a gross development value (GDV) in excess of RM1.2 billion in Kuala Lumpur and Johor this year.

The projects include Plaza Damas Phase 3 offices in Sri Hartamas (RM200 million), four serviced apartment blocks (RM600 million) in Sri Hartamas and Sri Putramas 3 on Jalan Kuching (RM300 million).

Group general manager Yap Boon Teck said two other projects will be launched in Johor, which include 400 units of townhouses and 2,000 units of serviced apartments in Mount Austin.

"Both these (Johor) projects will take off this year," Yap said, adding that RM1.2 billion GDV does not include the Johor projects.

He was speaking to reporters at the signing and mock cheque presentation ceremony between Mayland and two of its buyers - Koperasi Pendidikan Islam Malaysia Bhd and Maximerge Capital Sdn Bhd.

Maximerge bought 18 out of the 72 units of Plaza Damas Phase 3 for RM45.7 million while Koperasi Pendidikan Islam has acquired eight units for RM20.07 million.

Maximerge was represented by its chief executive officer Terence Yooi Sing Keen while Koperasi Pendidikan Islam was represented by its chairman Mustapa Kamal Maulat.

According to Yap, 95 per cent of the 72 units have already been sold since its soft launch last week.

He added that three service apartments - Chelsea, Charton and Cliveden will be built above the new Plaza Damas.

A 27-storey apartment block will also be built on an adjacent piece of land.

At present, Mayland has some 202ha of land in Klang Valley and Johor.

"We are in the final stages of acquiring two more parcels of land in Selangor measuring 4.05ha," Yap said.

17-storey Bukit Cagar flats to make way for Mass Rapid Transit project

BUKIT Cagar flats in Johor Baru, which is among the city's landmarks, will be torn down in less than a week.

Abandoned and dilapidated, it is now a place for scavengers and stray animals.

Last stand: The flats will be demolished on April 15 to make way for the
proposed Mass Rapid Transit project linking Johor Baru to Singapore.



This 17-storey structure, which is visible from across the causeway, will give way to the proposed Mass Rapid Transit project.

It was built in the 70s by the state to provide cheap housing for more than 2,000 households.

These households have been relocated to Taman Sri Stulang in Bakar Batu, approximately 3km away.

While the former residents are enjoying their new homes, trader Azmi Abdullah, 48, is still running a eatery near the flats with his wife Fadzillah Abdul Majid, 43.

The couple have been living here for a decade and are waiting to move to their new business premises.

Azmi said that food operators in Bukit Cagar were upset as they were yet to have proper sites to do business.

Today, instead of flat dwellers, scrap metal hunters frequent his stall for a meal or two.

Without water and electricity, Azmi has to close his shop earlier than before.

Idris Abdul, 60, who has been running a wiring service shop three doors away from Azmi's eatery, was uncertain about his future.

“How do they expect me to keep my things in such a small place, and this is my livelihood,” he lamented.

Another former resident, Sulaiman Samad, 34, who was at Azmi’s shop, said he preferred his new home compared to his Bukit Cagar flat which was very cramped.

However, the legal clerk at a firm in City Square Tower said that not everything was rosy at the new place because structural defects had started to show.

“The flats also leak, especially during rains, and water comes in through the windows as we are not allowed to install awnings by the developer,” said Sulaiman.

Those who were relocated should be allowed to purchase their homes instead of renting them, he added.

Used to be railway yards, some warehouses and squatters. Also behind the old railway station, there used to be 4 blocks of 15-storey flats. In fact, the locals would call those flats "15-storeys". They had this special trademark for their roof-top watertanks: inverted cones. Well these were all demolished some 10~15 years ago.

Lol. I thought those flats are the famous Bukit Cagar flats. ps!
