View Full Version : Calgary's Best Skyscraper
Mike_Jones April 20th, 2006, 05:57 PM What do you guys think?
Bankers Hall (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=25973)
Canterra Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=237806)
Nexen Building (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=335155)
Petro Canada Centre (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=43871)
TD Canada Trust Tower (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=264368)
Boris550 April 20th, 2006, 06:32 PM I would like to make a note here, I have changed my mind since I made that post in the Canterra thread. It is now my #1 favourite in the city. After going through downtown enough, Bankers Hall starts to look less great while Canterra still manages to be sexy.
thinner911 April 20th, 2006, 07:59 PM I gotta go with Nexen on this one. That sharp edge is one of my favorite architectural and structural creations -- especially in Calgary.
neilio April 20th, 2006, 08:48 PM i say nexon...love it.
Waterloo_Guy April 20th, 2006, 11:44 PM Cantera is so classy. I love the way it looks from all angles. I think Calgary could use a few more like it.
BTW, I think the Husky Oil buildings are also worthy of a mention.

True, I was walking past them today, and I just love the way the glass looks from street-level. They sky reflects off the gold glass from some angles (and at dusk you can see through a lot of it as well) so the towers end up being lovely patterns and shades of blue, purple, and gold.
Brett April 21st, 2006, 04:03 AM pictures? for people who have only been there, not live there...

EDIT: Anyways, the Husky Oil towers are totally underrated
Mike_Jones April 21st, 2006, 05:49 AM Husky Oil Towers (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=296551)
ltsowiak April 21st, 2006, 07:18 AM Definately the Husky Oil towers. I've always loved them the most. I only wish they were one super tall, instead of the two average heights. Cantera is number two and then Bankers Hall.
CtrlAltDel April 21st, 2006, 07:36 AM I vote for Husky Oil Towers too!
I remember when I first came to Calgary 5 years ago and I first viewed downtown from my hotel room, thinking they were the city's tallest. They stand so proudly and clearly from the southwest, looking like 2 big gold bars.
mikep April 21st, 2006, 08:30 PM I like Canterra. BTW, isn't the Husky Oil Towers called Wester Canadian Place? Or was there a name change?

You are correct, however the names are often used interchangably
samsonyuen April 22nd, 2006, 12:43 AM Nexen or Canterra.
Waterloo_Guy April 22nd, 2006, 01:05 AM Nexen is very cool looking also. But Cantera is a cut above. I would really like to see another building built along similar lines, maybe as a taller twin--Calgary needs more twins.
valantino April 22nd, 2006, 02:35 AM Nexen followed by Canterra
The Boy David April 22nd, 2006, 06:14 PM Nexen is awesome - such a simple but impressive design - I hadn't seen this building before - was quite a surprise to me.
Petro Canada Tower seems to have taken quite a beating in the forums, personally, I think it's a pretty good looking tower - nice and big, too.
Daver April 22nd, 2006, 09:54 PM Nexen was at one time to have a taller twin facing the other direction. Now that would have been cool!
Andy.\\ April 23rd, 2006, 12:26 AM Canterra Tower although the Nexen Building has a cool shape
talboi April 27th, 2006, 04:53 PM Considering its the city's only 200m building, Im surprised not many people like Petro.
Boris550 April 27th, 2006, 07:15 PM Petro is a bit of an ugly dog. We can respect her height, but she's a tough love.
Besides, people here have always hated her. Now it's because of aesthetics. Back then it was because it symbolized Federal intrusion into the Albertan economy. Just take a look at the following cartoons from the Herald:

Black Slacks April 27th, 2006, 08:00 PM I've always thought Petro-Canada's towers have aged well. For being completed in what, 1983, I think they're still pretty modern looking, which is more than I can say for so many other towers in Calgary.
I think Canterra is great because it doesn't follow many distinct lines. It's like, everyone can have a corner office. I think it looks even better in comparison to the box of a building that is Shell, across the street.
Western Canadian Place looks especially good at night I think, with the red 'Husky' signs lit up at the top. It goes along well with the blue 'Nexen' sign just down the street.
Bankers Hall towers are in a good location around Stephen Ave but they're not overly distinctive. It's cool that they've kept the original facades along the historic stretch. Nice roofs. Really nice interiors. I like the silver and gold theme.
Anyway Canterra gets my vote but they're all contenders!
Honourable mention to TD Canada Trust. Sleek yet unassuming...
Hey, how come nobody's mentioned Bow Valley Square? Wait, nevermind...
snoopy April 28th, 2006, 01:10 AM i love hard angles. Nexen #1 for Calgary la. but i hope Encana brings better architecture to Calgary, since its current stock isn't that interesting to me.
whitefordj May 1st, 2006, 01:42 AM remember when the crane fell off the top? the crane dude died to didnt he? I vote for the petro because of being the citys tallest, and the fact it has an interesting story.
Kev the burninator May 4th, 2006, 09:02 AM Canterra
ssiguy2 May 5th, 2006, 06:08 AM How long til Encana design come out?
vid May 5th, 2006, 07:14 AM ^By September, I think, would be safe to say. hopefully by the end of this month. I think I heard June?
I like TD because that's my favourite style of architecture, it's alot better looking than Petro-Can. Nexen has a very weird shape.. I like Canterra, but it would be better with a bit of colour. Bankers Hall is neat, gold and silver.. I like the design, but having two kinda ruins it. HuskyOil is one of my favourits from the whole country. I'll have to say..
1. TD
2. HuskyOil
3. Canterra
Petro-Can can have fourth.
CeC May 30th, 2006, 09:41 AM Canterra Tower. It's a very sleak, beautiful building.
