After years of On Hold, the develloper of 'De Rotterdam', an ultra urban construction to be built in Rotterdam, Netherlands, finally found a tenant for office space in the building, which makes construction sure.

This massive building is a 'homegame' for world famous and Pritzker Prize winner Rem Koolhaas with his Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), which has it's office located two kilometers from the plot. It makes his dream come treu to make a city within a city is the city he loves.

It's an old pier where a new central metropolitan area is being build, and where many skyscrapers are and will be constructed. This building will be located besides the Erasmus Bridge, which connects this central area to the older part of the Rotterdam heart.

Poor Rotterdam. Thats so far the ugliest new project here on SSC just behind that trash tower in Benidorm.

I don't see a tower. This IMO a MEGA urban building.

I'm glad to here that it's almost under construction

i just quit OMA and I can now say with a clear conscience that this is one hideous, out of date piece of junk that does not do its site any justice. Its almost as bad as Piano's nightmare 'man on a crutch' next door. Rotterdam will get a cheesy piece of 1993 architecture in 2009: sad.

That offset block design is very similar to OMA's proposal for Museum Plaza in Louisville.

It looks like what the Russians might have built if they'd won the Cold War. I think it could actually be kinda cool.

Much depends on the facade quality I think. If it's gonna be shiny and glittering it will be cool, if materials will be cheap it will be dull.

Not sure if i like this one. The design is quite boxy all tho they are offsetted, which on the other hand gives something to this complex but isn't enough. The hight is okey.

Looks nice, but the Baltiomore right on the first pic is an very old render

I thought Baltimore would be about 170m? I know it's the old desing on the first pic, but it's smaller than 'The Rotterdam'!

deal met vastgoedonderneming Amvest zijn nu ook de woningen

helft van de kantoorruimte van de hand gedaan. Hij noemt het
doorzetten van de bouw een gewaagde stap in deze economisch

^^ I don't know about any design changes that would go for 140 meter, so my guess is that 149 is still right.

Ok tommorow it will be official. The build should start later this year.

149 meters and in today's newspaper there is a short artical. Despite the credit crunch/recession the build of this tower is definite. They will start at the end of 2009 and it will take up to four years until completion.

So this thread can be moved from proposed to U/C :)

De Rotterdam makes Toren op Zuid look like a little pebble because of its massive width but fairly small height next to it.
still not sure if it would look right with the rest of the tall and thin scrapers going up in that area :)

Rotterdam, 11 juli.

Credit crunch or not, Rotterdam keeps buildings on it's future. Although that's with a 10-year-old design by architect Rem Koolhaas.

With proud the municipality of Rotterdam and the two developers (OVG and MAB) presented the plans yestarday for the biggest multifunctional building in the Netherlands: De Rotterdam. The building, praised as a vertical city where is being lived 24 hours per day, will arise the next 4 years at the banks of the New Maas. On the Wilhelminapier the first pilling will start at the end of this year. The project will cost 340 million euros.

With 149 meters it will be one of the biggest buildings in the city. It has 3 towers and will have offices, a 4-star hotel, apartments, restaurants and shops.

Koolhaas unveiled the design in 2001, but nothing happened with it anymore. Contracters and developers didn't dare to invest in the project. But ironically the financial crisis makes the construction possible. Alderman Hamit Karakus kept 200 million aside to keep the constructionprogress going, and with that employment.

According to Koolhaas, born in Rotterdam, it are alot of smaller buildings combined in 1 big building. Koolhaas said that he was relieved. He was fearing that it wouldn't get further as the sketching of the design. After ten years it will finally be build, in the best city I know.

Probably some mistakes I made but should be sort of readable.

Here you can see better that it are more smaller buildings combined into one. Very practical design, because almost every room has alot of windows.

^^ making the foundation for the towers is for Niels not u/c but then i wonder why do I see construction pits of other towers in world which aren't in te proposed section but in the normal (U/C) section.
Here in the Netherlands a project is under construction when you start piling and making the foundation, we don't need alsways have to go 'underground' with concrete floors and wallsor to dig deep first....

Yes, a crane to build up the big cranes for the project. You think that small crane is all they need to build this huge complex? Don't make a fool of yourself and stop whining about it.

well this pitt is huge, no doubt about it, but what do i see down below, yep foundation poles like the ones put in here at the site of the Rotterdam. I don't see huge towercranes(yet) at this site of the Shanghai Tower, still its in the u/c section.

Now tell me why that one is (well i understand why its u/c!!) but the Rotterdam isn't?!?!

Well, if you can't see the difference between that construction site and the construction site of de Rotterdam.. than maybe you should open your eyes? I'm kinda done with this discussion, you guys made your point and that's cool. We just follow the WDN rules here and if you have a problem with that you should stay out the WDN forums. I also don't really see the problem? Why are you guys crying about this project not being in the U/C section? Patience, it will be moved. I'm going to suspend members that keep on arguing over here.

You made you're point. I won't make any updates anymore in the WND forums.

Here is some extra proof:

Basically it goes in this order:

Pre-planning = Project is still in the design and consultation phase
Pro = Project has been submitted for planning permission
App = Project has been approved
Demo = Demolition underway on site
Prep = Site clearance/excavation/piling/foundations
U/C = Core and superstructure rising
T/O = Topped out, the tower has reached its maximum height
Com = Internally and externally complete.

In the UK forum we usually include "Prep" towers in the U/C section.



I might think of moving the Prep threads to the U/C section but that's going to be a lot of work.

All 1100 piles are in the ground. The pile-driving activities are completed. At the moment the building boards and building fences currently are posted. All is ready for the start of the Tour de France.

The opposite is actually true. This phenominal building will beautifully fill the rather big hole in the skyline on the Wilhelminapier. :) It will be a massive project to see growing upward to 3 x 149.09 meters. :cheers:

Wat een fantastische bouwput is dit! Ik zou bijna zeggen bouwput nr 1 van Rotterdam! Vooral vandaag, er werd beton gestort, dit keer op het middenstuk, nu dus nog maar 1/3e te gaan! Af en aanrijden van betonwagens, de een die al klaarstond na de ander. Een drukte van jewelste. Mooie aanblik met 3 kranen en al weer een 4e kraanvoet die klaarstaat.

Het is niet vast te leggen op foto hoe indrukwekkend het is, daarvoor moet je er zijn, zeker een bezoekje waard! Bij deze een uitgebreide update:

Een uitgebreide reportage van vandaag en jb_nl was erbij, af en toe met hevige regen, vanaf iets na 4'en. Veel pers ook aanwezig, een fotografe van het AD heeft mij nog op de foto gezet toen ik op het fotograferen was en veel andere passanten keken ook vol interesse naar het plaatsen van de brug, een secuur werkje en een zucht van verlichting onder het publiek toen het karwij gelukt was na wat heen en weer gefriemel om de pinnen precies onder de gaatjes te krijgen.
