omarmakki April 22nd, 2006, 03:21 PM Good day people, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go in qatar, shopping, chillin out and so on. just got here for work purposes. has anyone just got here as well ? any help much appreciated thank you.
First of all, welcome to Doha (although I am not there now!)...
Anyways, your first and primary objective is to take ALOT of fine photos and post 'em here!
Then comes, the chillin' out part ;)
You can go to the malls, City Centre, Landmark, Hyatt Plaza...etc
You can also go and stroll by the beautiful corniche...
You can go to the many parks
You can also go to the souk beside the (ta3riff belislam), which is the building with the spiral minaret.
You can rent a 4x4 and have some nice off road action.
You can also eat at that road (dunno its name) with a $hitload of restaurants.
And...
You can take more photos for us! :P
Anyway, maybe other qataris here could tell you more things to do and more places to go.
Have a nice stay ;)
Halawala April 22nd, 2006, 05:28 PM Welcome to Qatar!!
First of all, as our friend Omar stated, I suggest you go to the City Center, Landmark, Hyatt Plaza, Royal Plaza malls (in that order :) )
Also, you might also walk through the Cornsishe on your way to your hotel, or to the City Center.
You might want to visit Messaid which is a town 45 km South of Doha for some dunes surfing (which can be fun) but I think the weather is a bit hot (just try it).
As for dining, hmmmmmmmmm.... you can try Suhaim Bin Hamad street with all the Applebees, Chilis, Little Caesar, ect...) Also, Fridays, Al Bustan Hotel restaurant, ect..
Ask locals about where to go and what to do..
Enjoy your visit. Bon Voyage!!! :)
PS. Post some pics please!!
omarmakki April 22nd, 2006, 06:22 PM As for dining, hmmmmmmmmm.... you can try Suhaim Bin Hamad street with all the Applebees, Chilis, Little Caesar, ect...) Also, Fridays, Al Bustan Hotel restaurant, ect..
So, is that its name? Suhaim Bin Hamad?
dave550 April 22nd, 2006, 07:02 PM Welcome to Doha
I would have said the same thing. Emm there is tons of places that u can go to
-You should go to Al-Nasir st and try the shawarma there, if you are interested in local food, you can also go to Shabistan in Al-Sadd st. And if you are a fan of desserts you will fall in love with Kunafa, get the soft one" you can buy it in a lot of places, eg al-buhsuli and jabri."
-Try to go to the big mosques if you like architecture, but don't forget to take off ur shoes b4 entering.
-The malls are a lot of fun and a lot of events take place in there. "City Center is the 7th largest in the world, so you might start with it, and Hayyat Plaza has the biggest shopping Cart in the world u can see it in front of the parking lot."
-U should definitly go to the traditional Souq Wagef. The souq has been renovated lately to look like it used to be in the 60s, so it's interesting.
-don't foerget the Corniche, as it's the No one for people to have a nice walk, especially around 5pm since the weather gets nicer outside by the evening.
-If you wanted to chill at night, then u can go to Al-Bander restaurant and sit on one of the tables outside and have a very nice veiw.
-There is a lot of other things that u can do, like jet skiing, sand skiing in the south...etc.
dave550 April 22nd, 2006, 07:06 PM So, is that its name? Suhaim Bin Hamad?
That's Ramada Crossing

I remember when I went to Kuwait a month ago, I ate the best zbedy ever with a Kuwaiti family. Its one of my favorite dishes. But in Qatar, we eat fish with 3esh m7amar, or sweet rice, something that you guys dont cook in Kuwait with fish. This rice is orange sweet and goes great with the fish.
---Try it^^ You will not regret it :)
We like chan3ad and hamour, zbedy, too, mostly that.
wakrah-wi-bas April 24th, 2006, 01:18 PM are you asking what are Qatar's favourite kinds of fish?

I heard about gabo6... but I think you dont eat the m7amar with fish. I might be wrong. You have a very nice cafe in Marina Mall called Chocolate Bar. Thats my favorite Kuwaiti coffee shop.
--> I had a feeling your favorite dish was margog (saloona in Qatari). How did I know that. hmmmmmmm... .hehe
wakrah-wi-bas April 25th, 2006, 12:51 AM now will the esteemd chefs of the GCC forget about food for a second and concentrate on the topic of the thread?

Halawala April 25th, 2006, 02:23 PM Margog and Dubliner, actually the marina mall is always crowded. I have to wait an hour just to get a table there! My fav. restaurants are Asha's and Chocolate Bar. Hagendaz is nice too, the one in Souq Sharq. But for me Souq Sharq is a little "ay shay" as you guys would put it. hehe There is never parking, and its too crowded. I like the marina, fanar, and the Arabian Gulf Street restaurants the best.
Skoulikimou April 25th, 2006, 02:48 PM I heard about gabo6... but I think you dont eat the m7amar with fish. I might be wrong. You have a very nice cafe in Marina Mall called Chocolate Bar. Thats my favorite Kuwaiti coffee shop.

Halawala April 25th, 2006, 04:16 PM ^^^ hehe got confused cause Kuwaitis call saloona marag. and marag sounds like margog. Margog is the thing with the bread and is greenish. Right?? Please be right...

i'm afraid "sakura" is the only genuine japanese restaurant in doha. most asian restaurants are chinese, but Asia Live in hotel marriot offers sushi too.
last night i was in this new argentin restaurant, Betos. it's ok, if you fancy grill & south american cuisine. it's a co-owned by both kuwaiti, kasco, & qatari, al-bateel, comapny. anyhow, my favourite international cuisine is Le Notre.
just in case you come to doha next time, you have an extended invitation over dinner as a very dear guest of mine. i really meant it...wi 3la al3ain wi alras.
Halawala May 27th, 2006, 01:54 AM Wakrawi, I always wanted to go there to the Betos restaurant. What exactly is the food they have there?? What do south americans eat? Isnt there a Japanese sushi place in Royal Plaza in Al-Sadd?? Maybe, its been three months since I last visited Doha. :)
wakrah-wi-bas May 27th, 2006, 03:05 AM ^^ well, since Betos is new, so the minue list isn't available to customers yet, it'll arrive from argentin withing a couple of weeks, after it's been written fully in spanish.
so, what they do now, is to serve you a bit of everything. they start with a small peice of pastry as a starter, it contains a mix of beef & vegetables. then, some argentin garlic sauce, plenty of delicious hot loafs of bread, and some salad.
the main course is a steak, which is a bit spicy, followed by a piece of chicken.
they don't have a big selection of dessert, only 2, a traditional argentin cream-caramel with honey, and a vanilla cake.
the manager & 2 waiters are from argentin, wearing a traditional dress called "gaucho", and 1 from sri lanka.
the place is small, but cozy, with nice atomspher. toillets are clean.
the service is a bit slow since only 4 waiters are available, but very friendly. i went with a friend and we order all, cost us QR 208.
next week-end, i'll go to the indian restaurant next door, Tanjoor.
well, south americans eat mostly grill, since they have plenty of livestock.
the japanese restaurant in royal-plaza haven't open yet. don't know why
Halawala May 27th, 2006, 10:48 AM ^^Thanks, sounds delecious! I will try it out and then give you the results! hehehe

Qatar4Ever May 28th, 2006, 11:41 AM I need to go there when im back into town. In london there is a famous chain called gaucho grill that serve the best south american stakes. Im guessing this is sort of the same style of resturant.
wakrah-wi-bas May 28th, 2006, 02:52 PM Where is Le Notre? What kind of cuisine do they serve??
it's located in caravan complex of restaurants, near ramada traffic signals, between pizza-hut & starbucks.
it serves international & asian cuisine. they also have a seperate section for confectionary, & sidewalk cafe. expensive but highly recommended.
dave550 May 29th, 2006, 01:35 AM ^^Sounds like a good place. Is it new?
yaasar May 30th, 2006, 03:46 AM ^^
next week-end, i'll go to the indian restaurant next door, Tanjoor.
Went there the other day...It may look like a fine dining restaurant, other than the price, evrything else is ordinary....filled with srilankan waiters who know nothing about the food..you had to tell them the item numbers of the dish!!! They didnt have most of the dishes we ordered. The oens we ordered were not authentic either ..just indian sounding names with Indian spices..
ordered mutton biryani got chicken instead...and they were arguing that we had eaten a portion of it, so they cant replace it nor take it off the bills...
Food is ordinary nothing to write home about...have eaten better food in those small indian reaturants...
If you need Indian...try the Taj Rasoi at Marriott, Caravan Bukhara or the Chingari at the Ramada...
