View Full Version : African Highways/espressways KB April 23rd, 2006, 11:14 AM :) Post pics of beautiful highways/motorways/freeways/expressways of you country.So.....emm.... lets get going  blitzkrieg April 26th, 2006, 10:04 PM I thought I was gonna look at all the cool pictures of african highways. It would be really cool since africa's image is pretty bad. Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 04:07 PM Here are some pics from Ghana: http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/94180431.full.jpg http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/87134894.full.jpg http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/40390554.full.jpg blitzkrieg April 27th, 2006, 04:55 PM ^^ Looks like to be an expressway so how come people are standing at side of road? They could get hit (even 30 40 mph would be fatal) mike2005 April 27th, 2006, 05:28 PM in africa people walk along major highways and many people do get hit. Here in jozi people try to cross major 6 lane highways! its madness. especially at night!! we see dead people who have been hit by cars on the side of the road quite often. (i have seen 4 on beyers naude since january) blitzkrieg April 27th, 2006, 05:35 PM They should make pedestrian bridges on these highways. Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 08:52 PM even in many asian or Latin American countries people use to cross highways. That is not restricted to Africa. This think with tha highway is that is has been newly built and construction work is still going on their although cars are already driving on it. Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 09:15 PM Tunis highway http://www.babnet.net/imgfes/autoroute.jpg these are two highways outside Abidjan http://www.un.org/french/Depts/dpi/Abidjan99/edu_cotedivoire/autoroute.gif http://www.africaphotos.com/r_images/IC35r.jpg Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 11:25 PM Abuja expressways http://www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif http://www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif http://static.flickr.com/25/44091753_40bf7eb32e.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/31/44110799_64219dec9c.jpg?v=0 http://www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif Matthias Offodile April 27th, 2006, 11:26 PM Abuja expressways http://www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif http://www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gif Mosi-oa-Tunya April 28th, 2006, 01:16 AM Take a look at Expressways & Highways in South Africa blitzkrieg April 28th, 2006, 04:23 AM Any pictures? Naga_Solidus April 28th, 2006, 12:50 PM Here are some pics from Ghana: http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/94180431.full.jpg http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/87134894.full.jpg http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/40390554.full.jpg Where in Ghana is that? And who built it? Matthias Offodile April 28th, 2006, 01:03 PM Naga Solidus, here is some more information which was attached to the photos Tetteh Quarshie Interchange (name of the interchange) "Police personnel have been stationed at various points at the newly constructed Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to help drivers navigate the confusing maze of interconnected roads. Apart from instructing the drivers about directions, the officers are also distributing pamphlets on how to use the new interchange. The interchange is expected to ease traffic on the Legon-Accra route. The 80 billion-cedi project is yet to be fully completed but it was opened to traffic on Sunday, with minor works still underway" http://www.ghanaweb.biz/GHP/img/pics/news/41457825.full.jpg PS: I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND PICTURES OF LAGOS HIGHWAYS (MOST ARE SIX LANE HIGHWAYS) .....ABUJA EVEN HAS EIGHT LANE HIGHWAYS BUT it is impossible to find photos on the internet......NIGERIAS ARE VERY LAZY AT PORTRAYING THEIR COUNTRY TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD....NO PHOTOS TO BE FOUND empersouf April 28th, 2006, 05:10 PM Cant find some moroccan ones:( But i'll make some photos this summer;) Naga_Solidus April 28th, 2006, 05:37 PM Naga Solidus, here is some more information which was attached to the photos Tetteh Quarshie Interchange (name of the interchange) "Police personnel have been stationed at various points at the newly constructed Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to help drivers navigate the confusing maze of interconnected roads. Or do they have any further grade seperation at subsequent junctions? PS: I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND PICTURES OF LAGOS HIGHWAYS (MOST ARE SIX LANE HIGHWAYS) .....ABUJA EVEN HAS EIGHT LANE HIGHWAYS BUT it is impossible to find photos on the internet......NIGERIAS ARE VERY LAZY AT PORTRAYING THEIR COUNTRY TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD....NO PHOTOS TO BE FOUND I can't figure out why. Matthias Offodile April 28th, 2006, 06:04 PM Naga-Solidus, Well, there must be others by now. This junction is new, however. I have only been once to Ghana and that is 10 years back (on a week-end trip from Côte d´ivoire, where I lived). 10 years ago Ghana was much less developed than it is nowadays. ...and in the 80´s it was a no go area. Things have considerably improved since then tahks to Rawlings and Kufuor. I cannot understand why there are virtually new pics on Nigeria´s expressways. Currently there is a lot of road construction going on in Nigeria. You are to blame April 29th, 2006, 06:16 AM Not sure if this is classified as an expressway but here are some Accra, Ghana roads http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/lance_marlon/Dsc02035.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/lance_marlon/5220Accra.jpg blitzkrieg April 29th, 2006, 08:03 PM ^^ Looks like people have a lot of cars in africa since this road seems jammed! Matthias Offodile May 18th, 2006, 05:32 PM In recenty years the governement started to build a lot more roads that link the various cities and towns of Gabon (road bulding cost are one of te highest in the world). In the 70´s and 80´s tarred roads outside of the the three big towns were very little developped (as Gabon´s population in the 70´s was just below 500 000) Here are a few pics from overland "highways" in Gabon that link the various parts of that very sparsely populated country http://thibaut.ochin.free.fr/VIE/images/ndjole/lalaramitzic.jpg http://www.expeditionoverland.com/photogallery/JournalPicsAfricaMediumRes/2003-06-18%2017-19-00.JPG you see some of these lorries on overland highways within Gabon They are scarry... http://www.expeditionoverland.com/photogallery/JournalPicsAfricaMediumRes/2003-06-23%2008-13-01.JPG empersouf May 18th, 2006, 06:41 PM ^^ I wouldnt drive behind that one:eek: What if one tree falls off!!! abesha May 18th, 2006, 11:10 PM Matthias, I'm not sure. I think it's right outside the city, or it's connected to the Ring Road that was finished a couple of years ago. I think it's a few miles out of the city though because it looks like quite a rural area whereas the Ring Road is right in the middle of the chaos of the city! I had actually put other pictures in that post but for some reason they didn't show up. Here they are again, hope they work. Ring Road 1 (http://flickr.com/photos/ethioblogger/95298609/) Ring Road 2 (http://flickr.com/photos/ethioblogger/95298596/in/photostream/) The ring road is the bridge btw. Here is some more pics of the highway outside the city in really bad quality. Highway outside of Addis (http://www.ethiopians.com/photoessay/ringroad_03_3.jpg) Highway outside Addis 2 (http://www.ethiopians.com/photoessay/ringroad_03_8.jpg) As for being busy, it depends on the time of day as well as day of the week. People in Addis love going out of town for the weekend so it can get quite busy, however I don't think they have huge traffic problems there. Those happen in the city streets. Matthias Offodile May 18th, 2006, 11:21 PM Abesha, the pics are really nice...I have read that the Chinese are building a highway in ethiopia in a German paper lately. Is that true? Are all of those in SA? kulani December 13th, 2006, 02:33 AM yes, SA has an extensive road network covering all cities, all towns and most rural areas (generally most rural areas can be reached by paved road or are within about 10 kilometers of one). The main national road networks are toll roads and i often have to pay $4 per toll-gate and encounter 5-7 tollgates (about $26 per trip) when going to Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Witbank, Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth or Polokwane (my home city) from Johannesburg. This is used to maintain the highways. I will make an effort to label some of the places. Kboy, yes you are right it should be labelled as a highway. It is not an expressway in a strict sense of the word and by definition. The signing of the contract took place on 29 December 2006 at the Department of State for Finance and Economic Affairs in Banjul. The roads to be reconstructed by Ballast Nedam Africa, a Dutch company, include Barra-Amdalaye, Trans-Gambia Highway, Mandinaba-Seleti, Soma-Basse, and Basse-Sabi-Wellingara. The total "contract cost is Euro 39,422,728". "This amount is part of the Forty Four Million Euro EC Grant to The Gambia to support the implementation of our National Transport Plan under the 9th EDF," said the Secretary of State for Finance and Economic Affairs, Musa Bala-Gaye during the signing ceremony. Hon. Bala-Gaye said: "In our commitment to fair competition we, the National Authorities, worked very closely with the office of the European Delegation in Banjul, in ensuring strict adherence to the European Development Fund's Tendering and Contracting Procedures." This, he added, enabled the authorities to conclude the tendering and contracting process smoothly and in a timely manner without any hitches. "Immediately following the signing phase, we expect the contractor to start mobilizing, and according to the roadmap we have established, actual works on the roads are scheduled to commence in April 2007," Hon. Bala-Gaye said. He expressed hope that the partnership established by the respective parties involved in ensuring the implementation of the EC supports to the National Transport Plan would be further strengthened "with the contractor now coming on board".
