Varna ( Bulgarian: Варна ) is the third largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia and Plovdiv, with a population of 351,552(10.01.2006) . It is the capital of Varna Province and an important port in the eastern part of the country, located on the Black Sea coast close to Lake Varna.

Varna, the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast is commonly referred as the Sea Capital of Bulgaria. The city was also the base of the Bulgarian Navy. Currently, there is a Naval Museum with a museum ship torpedo boat Drazki. The archaeological museum contains some of the finds from the so-called "Gold of Varna", a cache of Chalcolithic grave-goods which are the oldest gold treasure in the world.

It's a good questions. Many countries on the same latitude as Bulgaria, Croatia for example, have palm trees, but we don't. Our winters are too harsh unfortunately.

But it you look at it from a positive point of view, we have a booming ski industry.

Black sea is not Mediterranean, It's open to the north , there are no mountains to protect the influx of cold air from Siberia . That's why there's no Mediterranean vegetation . Some spots on Black Sea like Sochi in Russia for example have microclimate and it's milder than elswhere so they can have palmtrees.

But yeah, in some winters the cold artic air just rushes in along the coast like a funnel, and it gets freezing cold, but otherwise it's not Quebec, even though harsh winters are always spectacular with the ice along the sea, etc.

I would not be surprised....Varna has a lot more potential than Plovdiv just by where it is located...Yet, it is laudatory that Plovdiv has more than kept up in terms of economic development...I just wish it were also on the seaside or at least a bit closer to Pamporovo...

Varna is IMO the most beautiful city in Bulgaria, or at least it was in 1987 when I visited it along with several other places. It was pedestrian friendly (a trait I appreciate in cities) and the women knew how to take care of themselves, contrary to what happened elsewhere in Bulgaria. For those who do not know, under communist regime Bulgarian women looked very neglected. For instance, they had hairy legs :nuts:. Apparently razors were scarce back then.

Btw, i have been student and lived in Varna for 6 years ... 1997 - 2003... And now have spotted a lot of changes in the old part of the city. Many of the nice old Vienna style buildings have been renovated.

Most of all i am stunned at the new look of this catholic cathedral below ... While i was in Varna it was closed and was almost falling apart. Was looking like a perfect decor for a horror movie :) Glad to see it now in perfect shape and lighted in the night. :cheers:

I`m surprised(in a positive aspect) from what I`ve just seen.Varna has underwent a lot of changes since the last time I was there and the combination between renovated buildings, dating back to the beginning of XX century, and the modernistic ones is much better than in Sofia and Ruse for example.In fact there isn`t anything extraordinary but the city somehow gives(at least to me) the feeling of comfort which isn`t characteristic of most of the Bulgarian towns/cities.What I`d like to see in not so distant future is some big project- similar to "Super Burgas", although it`s still idea, which will give additional impulse to the tourism(and not only) and ofcourse a bit more investments in road infrastructure.

They've started the renovation several months ago but there is no progress at the moment. May be they are waiting for the end of the winter, or are looking for funding, I have no idea. Hopefully they will find enough money to finish it.

The Synagogues

As a matter of fact very few people know about their existence at all, but Varna has 2 old synagogues.


The first one is hidden in the backyard of the Navy HQ. It used to be located on a small central street, but after the place was turned into a military compound the surroundings were enclosed with a fence and it became a restricted area. For that reason at present the access to the synagogue is not allowed and it's left to ruin. The roof is long gone and the rest is progressively decaying... which is a pity, because this beatiful building could be one of the symbols of the city.:ohno:

The second one was in a similar condition. It was used as a sport hall (I even trained sambo there when I was a child). A real shame in my opinion, but it is indicative of the communist attitude towards religion. It used to look like this:

The good news is that the Jewish community began the reconstruction of the place several months ago. They destroyed the entire old building and started again from zero.

Административната сграда на завода за дизелови двигатели "ВАМО" ще изчезне от градския пейзаж на Варна, информира Радио Варна. Поетапното разрушаване на административната сграда на ВАМО започна рано тази сутрин. Предвижда се сградата да бъде съборена до основи до края на деня. За целта се използва машина тип " ножица", която реже арматурата и панелните колони на сградата.

Зад обекта вече има изравнен терен, на който преди години бяха разположени цеховете на завода. На освободения терен ще бъде изграден още един МОЛ, който ще е собственост на австрийска фирма.

Варненският завод за дизелови двигатели "Вамо" спира производството. Това стана ясно от официално съобщение на компанията, изпратено до Българската фондова борса. Причината за решението е заради значително намаляване на обема на поръчките и използването на производствените мощности на завода, което налага преструктуриране на дружеството със значително съкращаване на персонала. Така официално се потвърди предварителната информация, че "Вамо" ще прекрати дейността си.

За спиране на завода се заговори още при смяната на собствеността му през януари, когато седем компании придобиха общо 74.99% от дружеството. В следващите месеци последва размяна на дялове от компанията и сключване на споразумение за съвместно управление, след което основният акционер - "Дивал 59", отправи търгово предложение към миноритарните акционери в компанията с искане да отпише дружеството от публичния регистър и впоследствие да го свали от търговия на борсата. Собственик на "Дивал 59" е Емил Галов, който участва вече в управлението на "Бизнес парк 2005".

Според източници на "Дневник" на територията му се планира изграждането на мол - търговски, бизнес и развлекателни площи. Не е ясно и каква част от персонала ще бъде съкратена. Към края на 2006 г. в завода са работили 425 души според отчета на дружеството. От завода единствено заявиха, че повече информация могат да дадат след провеждане на общото събрание.

Преди време изпълнителният директор на един от новите акционери в завода - "Бизнес парк Запад" ЕАД - София, Евгени Гълъбов каза, че не знае за съществуването на проект за изграждането на бизнес център на територията на предприятието. Гълъбов е свързан и с компания на финансиста Емил Хърсев, който обаче тогава потвърди за "Дневник", че има проект за изграждането на мол на мястото на завода, но самият той няма общо с него.

Предстоящото изграждане на мол върху "Вамо" се свързваше и с гръцкия гражданин Христос Мурутис, който контролира "Юрокапитал Битекс". Той заяви, че в средата на 2006 г. действително са му предлагали да купи завода с цел да се разработи проект за мол, но се е отказал от него.

Заедно с Гълъбов в управлението на "Бизнес парк Запад" участва и Валери Таков, показва справка в електронния регистър ДАКСИ. Двамата влизат и в дружества на "Инкомс телеком холдинг", който преди време започна инвестиции и в имоти. Холдингът построи търговския център "Антим тауър" в София и има проект за ваканционно селище в Банско.

"Вамо" се намира на входа на Варна, до магистралата за София. Площадката на завода е върху различни парцели с обща площ от 140 - 150 хил. кв. м. Освен това дружеството има и по-малки имоти в покрайнините на Варна, сред които и малък парцел в с. Тополи. През 2005 г. "Вамо" учреди дъщерно дружество "Бизнес център 2005", където вложи чрез непарична вноска 33 урегулирани имота и 21 сгради според отчета на завода за 2005 г. Тогава предприятието отчита повишаване на приходите. Леко се увеличават и приходите за 2006 г. според консолидирания отчет за четиримесечието. Те възлизат на 10.9 млн. лв. при 10.5 млн. лв. година по-рано. Силно обаче нарастват разходите от 9.8 на 11.1 млн. лв. за 2006 г. и така предприятието излиза на загуба от 189 хил. лв.

Смяната на собствеността стана през януари, когато на блоков сегмент на борсата мина 74.99% от капитала на "Вамо". Основните акционери тогава - "Българска индустриална и търговска кооперация" и "Секонекс холдинг" ООД, продадоха съответно по 50% и 24.99% при цена на акция 86.22 лв. Последваха няколко размени на пакети през февруари и март и така в момента според информация от бюлетина на борсата пряка собственост в завода имат: "Бизнес парк Запад" ЕАД с 23%, "Дивал 59" с 23.74%, "Велика турс" - 8.50%, "Рема трейд" - 8.01%, "Транстрейдинг" - 7.79%, и "Форс мениджмънт сървисиз България" - 5.99%, "Мадли" ЕООД с 5.47%, "Гран" ЕООД с 5.29% и "Сотиров Ризорт" ЕООД с 2.22%. Така те контролират общо 90.01%, а наскоро подписаха и споразумение за обща политика по управление.

ok. I visited one museum two years ago when the exposition Bulgarian Golden Treasures was on display, but I thought that museum was on the same side as the municipal building and it was a bit after it too. It wasn't the archaelogical museum was it?

Last year the ruins of a monastery complex were discovered right above Varna. It was built by knyaz Boris in the 9th century and included a large scriptorium where monks were creating amounts of literature, it was a kind of medieval factory for books. Thus spreading the fresh Cyrillic alphabet. :banana:

Община Варна ще изгради селище от няколко къщи за деца с умствени увреждания във Варна. Това съобщи вчера кметът на морския град Кирил Йорданов. В селището ще бъдат настанени и децата от Могилино, заяви Йорданов.
Община Варна ще даде терен от няколко декара в кв. Владиславово за изграждането на къщичките на варненските деца с ментални проблеми, а УНИЦЕФ се ангажира да построи къщички за децата от Могилино. Международната организация, която брани интересите на децата по света, е обещала помощ за осъществяването на проекта.
След като стана ясно, че домът от Могилино ще бъде преместен край Русе, срещу настаняването на децата скочиха съкварталци, които отказаха да приемат в района си децата от Могилино.

I saw in this topic some images posted by zzibit, however these were taken by my wife from our balcony and obviously floating around on the internet in low resolution, so hereby higher resolution versions plus some additional.
The firework pictures were taken a couple years ago on the day of Varna (15th of August).

You mean these pictures of the cathedral in Varna have been edited? The last image has only been edited on the top and bottom side (additional lines) in order to prepare it for printing purposes. The first image of the fireworks has only been masked on the borders, for the same reason as the last image. The other fireworks images have not been edited at all, neither the sunset image (one before last image). They are just lucky shots made by someone with a steady hand...

I'm glad to see that you like Bulgaria and it attracted you.

As for ВОДА's "edited", it wasn't about the pictures you showed.When someone posts a comment and for some reason wants to delete it he usually changes it to "deleted"/"edit"/"edited" and so on.

Concerning the effects, they are certainly not a drawback.There are N-many photoshopped pictures on this forum and even there are contests for the best effects in the international forums, so there is absolutely no problem to post them here.

That island under the bridge, what is it used for? It seems like it's part of the port, but I am not convinced. Also, are there any waterfront parks there? seems like a great place to snap few pics of the ships passing by.
