^^ Great Pic! I love the Rose Tower. Unfortunately the Al Attar Tower hasn't changed in months... wonder whats going on. I hope they've just been working on the interior side of things. This looks like it's on hold or something.

Nope, the way we do it here is if a tower got to the construction stage and then went on hold it stays here. A half built building is surely not a proposal.
If it was only in the prep stage however then it becomes on hold and stays in the proposals section.

dachacon
March 1st, 2009, 10:37 PM
^^ no because neither are under construction.
this section is for towers under construction only. i think what malec left out was that this tower was put on hold before, so it will not be long until it resumes construction, so there is no point in moving it to the proposes, and on hold section.

I agree with you dachacon, if it's not being built, then it should stay over in Proposal. But if this, Al Attar Tower, is gonna go back u/c very soon, then there's no reason to constantly move it back and forth. However, I'm skeptical this one will go back u/c, seems its been on hold for months.

I was just mentioning Waterview and CS because there should be the same rules for all towers.

I hope this one restarts soon, I hate seeing a big skeleton next to the Rose Tower.

malec
March 2nd, 2009, 01:18 AM

AltinD
March 3rd, 2009, 10:26 AM
We had one in the UAE section but then closed it down. In this climate with hundreds of projects in jeopardy or stopping and restarting, it made no sense to keep it open. We just returned all the projects on their respective sections and kept that thread only for towers/projects never build.

^^ A big dark-green matchstick next to SZR! Don't like the cladding very much..

On the contrary, my own opinion is that it goes very well in Dubai where the facade colors vary wildly under the broiling sun. Sure it is flashy etc, but then it is like so in much of the city of Dubai, so it goes well there, whilst it would not in many other cities. Most of the city is new anyway, built in the desert, there is not much to take into consideration there as far as the design goes.

Who knows, in a couple of decades... these kind of designs might be considered "classical", or at least characteristic for Dubai, and new developments will be expected to take them into consideration :runaway: .

Thanks to Imre for the updates today.

Clading colour is always finalised during construction after they test on site different colours of glass and cladding panels and how they interact with eachover.

The colour of the glass is not green and is not gold ... rather something in between.

^^

Not boxy enough for you?

I mean there are even more on the other side of the road. Boxes are ugly and don't achieve anything but make the city look like a normal/old city like NY. Too many boxes signals that the city's architects don't have any ideas or are just bored. Dubai is unique and needs unique and futuristic buildings with stunning designs.

This building needs a crown as its on a primetime location that deserves better than a tall box. If they wanted to build boxes, there is plenty of desert for that :D

Bear in mind though that a uncontrolled mish mash of styles, materials, forms and colours can produce an ugly skyline. NY's skyline may have a vast array of non-descript buildings but together along with iconic other structures, they create a stunning skyline. This is why NY's skyline appears as classy. Dubai on the other hand could quite easily turn out tacky, and too fussy.

And remember, boxes don't signal a lack of imagination on the part of the architects, but a lack of ambition or severe cost cutting on the part of the developers. Architects only design something within the limits that the developers set. ;)

Guest89
November 11th, 2009, 09:04 AM
^^ Agreed, the only thing that helps New York is that the style suits it. Its skyline is stunning cause they have building next to a building and took New York 100 years to achieve its skyline. Dubai is now half way there just in a decade.

Your point also reveals the red tape that the country has as a whole. There is no red tape in Dubai. Whatever Sheikh Mo wants it happens, which is why its a dream to be an architect in Dubai.

The way to fit the most people in a building is in a box so thats why new york has so many and feels like a place people are actually working and living. I was sayin it needs just a few tall boxes and this one would be perfect to balance out the skyline so it doesnt look like its trying too hard. Those boxes you circled would never be found in a new york skyline.

Al Attar is big company here , they have many towers, buildings, shops and villas which are just for rent thats why they always have income.

Have you heard of Global Financial Crisis ... or nothing was being build, or planned, in your cities at all during the last 2 - 3 years?

As a matter of fact, there's a condo project in my hometown that has had quite a few lawsuits thrown around between city agencies, developers, and construction companies. Went on for about the last 18 months. The city finally got sick of the weed infested concrete hole and stepped in to act as the developer just last week.

I was just wondering if Dubai was proactive in trying to get developers to finish what they start. Some municipalities just accept the unfinished projects and derelict cranes. Others force 'em to fill in the holes. Sometimes they take the projects. Just wondering how Dubai handles em.

Below some merged snapshots I took from Geralds recent Dubai gigapan from Red (http://gigapan.org/gigapans/64973/) (thanks a lot, good job!).

My point about Al Attar Tower: for a long time the parts on top appeared about the same height. I got the impression
that the taller steel frames to the right must be quite new, I've never seen them before.
Could it be possible that the work on the roof has resumed lately?

If they didnt start the interior work yet i think this ones gonna b finished in lets say 2013 2014 and this is still a good timeline since the developer is still al attar haha. So this ones construction could take from ground breakin to finishin ~9 years, wow.

Well at least one side of the cladding is done. Looks pretty good.

I m wondering when it is going to be complete..... its already been 5 years now...

Make that more then 6 1/2 years. The developer took control over the site somewhere in Spring 2004 :ohno:

Still better then their 2 other potential supertalls on the other side of SZR that didn't got over the perimeter wall shoring stage and were abandoned somewhere in 2006 or 2007.

Lol, if i'd have the power over some authority which controls developments and construction in Dubai, i'd def forbid this developer to start anything again...

Yes, what a beautiful night panorama above.

Some more recent pics around Sheikh Zayed Road would be fine though, e.g. to recognize if there's progress on Al Attar Tower's crown.

I hope it will be pulled down. It is a horrible building. An insult to Dubai.

Actually I think that it is decent for Dubai, or at least, it could be if they ever finish it :okay:

I actually like the cladding. But it has been off again on again for years! They just need to finish it already. :bash:

I like the cladding too, especially its color.

The back side of this building looks awful though without it's glass. I know they want the SZR side looking nice. But they really do need to get moving on the rest of the building.

They will, the question is not if but when.
