Yeah i do believe they are abondened although that night we camped in one similar but it was refurbsihed of course, and it was a bit far from these two...
these house should be kept for ever and they should be taken care of. it would be a shame to remove these houses.

I love how the grapes in Lebanon grow in many place...
My house in summer looks so nice with the grape vines at the front sit under it and eat them all day .. sour but nice.

those hills and valleys looked soo peacefull and green.... reminds me of sound of music ! haha

the moment i looked at the pics i knew it was rashaya district but i searched for mount hermon in the background (and it is impossible to be in rachaya district and not c hermon in the back) but i didn't find it so i thought this must be another area !!!

BEIRUT: Environment Minister Mohammad Rahhal held a meeting on Monday to launch a project to reforest Lebanon and to confirm the goals of the Permanent National Conference on Environment. The reforestation project would be based on the new strategy formed last year, according to which seeds of pine would be scattered from helicopters. The results of last year’s project would also be broadcast on television stations. Rahhal said this year was the first time the policy statement included a clear article concerning the environment and the national plan to plant 2 million trees per year. – The Daily Star

Man.. did you eat at that restaurant? Last summer I went there and we ordered so much food (we were a group of 20).. and it was not good at all. We pretty much left everything untouched, and I saw cats in the kitchen walking around eating things that fell on the ground... gross

I was a little upset by hermel, the place has a lot of potential yet the municipality doesn't seem to give a crap in maintaining its beauty (by that I mean removing the stupid junk yards and planting those huge fields with something rather than leaving them looking like we are in a desert.

Hell No I didnt eat, the same thing Happend with us and we lef all the food untouched lool... And I also feel the same way, just look at the Pyramid there, its all filled with stupid Grafitti and it looks like a junkyard around it, its a real shame...

But awesome views, I was WOWED by the awesomeness of this place.. Me being the city guy who never leaves Beirut it was a real change for me and so awe-inspiring.

Rock climbers reach for new heights in Lebanon

BEIRUT: Lebanon attracts history buffs with its ancient ruins, beach bums with its miles of coastline and could soon be drawing rock climbers from around the world with its limestone cliffs.

The climbing scene in the country is small, but dedicated local climbers are working hard to develop the sport and share their passion.

One of the most popular climbing areas is Harrissa Tannourine, which is about a 75-minute drive north of Beirut and has views of the cedars of the Tannourine Cedar Forest Nature Reserve. The area sits at 1,400 meters above sea level and boasts some 45 climbs, including ones called “Pokemon” and “Marylou falls asleep under the snow.”

This kind of information – routes names, difficulty, topographic maps, driving directions and photos – for Harrissa Tannourine and over a dozen climbing sites, the majority of which are in Mount Lebanon and in the north, can be found on Climbinglebanon.com.

The website is a collaborative project by a small group of climbers and an invaluable resource offering traditional information, like the number of bolts on each climb. But it also offers advice like this, for those looking to try a site on private land in Laqlouq: “The land owner has lots of veggies grown there so please be careful.”

Besides being popular among experienced climbers, Harrissa Tannourine is also a good spot to learn, according Elie Abou Tayeh, who oversees the website. Climbers in Lebanon use the French numerical scale to rank the difficulty of climbs, from 1a to 8c. Based on the scale, tackling a 6 requires experience, 7 is advanced and 8 means you have maybe a decade of strong climbing behind you, says Abou Tayeh, who’s been climbing since 2007 and finds himself on a mountain about three days a week. Harrissa Tannourine has some climbs of 3s and 4s, alongside more challenging routes.

Another good option for beginners is the indoor climbing gym at St. Joseph School-Aintoura, which opened last year.

The gym is housed in an enormous hangar and it is especially popular outside of summer months when weather can make outdoor climbing unpleasant or impossible. The gym offers courses, and people of all ages, starting at about 5 years old, come to learn, says Elie Irani, on a climbing instructor.

“In climbing, you use your mental and physical capacities and all people can climb regardless of experience,” he says.

As more Lebanese are taking up climbing for the first time, local climber Jad Khoury is working to develop more advanced routes and establish Lebanon as a spot on the world climbing map.

Khoury, whose attitude toward climbing was described by a French magazine as “hyper-enthusiasme,” is the administrator for the Rock Climbing Lebanon Facebook group, which has some 400 members and is a great way to find climbing partners. He has also become a kind of ambassador for climbing in Lebanon, inviting international competitive climbers to come see what the country offers.

Last year, Khoury played host to French climber and world champion Alex Chabot, who visited along with photographer Sam Bié. While Chabot climbed established routes, he also developed nine advanced routes, from 6a to 8b, including a couple in the Qadisha Valley, that local climbers can now attempt to improve their skills.

For those who don’t have time to journey to Qadisha or Harrissa Tannourine, there’s Nahr Beirut, which was recently developed by a couple of local climbers and is the closet climbing area to the capital. The area has eight climbs, including one 7b called “Yalla Habibi.”

For some, that’s not close enough and one local climber has even built an indoor climbing gym inside his Beirut apartment, which, rumor has it, is otherwise mostly empty.

With such enthusiasm for the sport, it’s not surprising that there are plans to establish an official rock climbing association in Lebanon.

According to a number of different climbers, an association would help the community raise funds to properly maintain the safety of routes, keep climbing areas clean and create new topographic maps.

Though Khoury says he knows of no major injuries or fatalities from climbing accidents in Lebanon, he and others believe an association would lead to uniform safety standards for climbing operators and promote safety for individuals.

“Many commercial operators in the country that teaching climbing or repelling for a day have no regard for safety whatsoever. We want to promote safe climbing procedures,” says Abou Tayeh.

An association would also make it easy for Lebanese climbers to participate in climbing competitions, like the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup event, which is being held later this month in Amman, Jordan and will be the first of its kind in the Middle East.

And finally, climbers hope that having legal status will help them form better relationships with the central and local governments. Last year, the municipality of Kfardbien closed access to the natural rock bridge, which lies inside a nature reserve and is one of the more popular climbing sites in the country.

According to Antoine Akiki, an official from Kfardbien, the municipality is working with the relevant ministries to protect the area while allowing one side of the bridge to be reopened.

“We’re not against sports, we are just trying to protect the area,” he says.

But climbers say they are being unfairly targeted. They ask why, if the municipality is concerned with preserving the site, it sponsored a festival there this summer, complete with bungee-jumping that required setting up a crane on top of the bridge.

The closure is disappointing but some climbers are already developing an alternative site nearby as there are still pockets of less-frequented mountain areas, where the sight of climbers still elicits real excitement, and sometimes confusion, from local residents.

“Sometimes they act a little shocked at first,” says Irani. “They don’t get the idea behind climbing, they don’t realize it’s a sport.”

“Mostly, they’re really curious about what we’re doing,” says Cedric Hofstetter, a Swiss expat who’s been living and climbing in Lebanon for the past couple years.

“You should go around, it’s much easier than going up,” he says, imitating some well-intentioned advice heard often by climbers in Lebanon.

But the current size of the climbing scene is actually one of its most attractive features, says Hofstetter. “It’s a really attractive community because it is very small compared to Europe.”

“It’s so crowded in Switzerland,” he says. “The luxury here is you can experience nature; you can enjoy silence.”

bananas originated in the tropics, but they are cultivated in many countries around the world, and are very common in the Mediterranean basin. In Lebanon, they are cultivated, along with citrus plants, all along the Lebanese coast, especially on the coastal plains south of beirut
