The Gods must be crazy" is an old movie done in the beggining of the 80s.
It was hilarious and one of the best funny movies of all time.

An Araibian or jewish film company shot a film in Durban city center about 3 years back, they filmed in Prince Edward street, they used some of our local actors, it wasnt a big budget film, but they transformed the whole street into a desert! they had like 10 tons of beach sand! It was cool to see all this stuff happening in my city, they even had the trailers, & cafeteria! I scored some free food & coffee from there (true indian :D)

If I remember the name of the movie will let you guys know.

'Lord of War' with Nicolas Cage was filmed entirely in the SA - quite incredible when you see the 'locations' the film goes through...and Blood Diamond with Leonardo di Caprio is largely shot in SA, and features a 'South African' lead.

But if you want South Africa rough and unintelligible to outsiders, you must read 'The Devils Valley' by Andre Brink.
I challenge anyone to come up with a more South African book - and it is unforgettable.
Not to mention 'Life and times of Michael K' by J.M.Coetzee - and 'Disgrace', although that is blackly depressing.

I know you asked for films, just thought I would mention these books.

To finish, I would like to recommend 'Saturday night at the Palace', great SA movie (1984).
And Mr Bones, Mama Afrika, Panic Mechanic - all light hearted.

Oh, and Sarafina, Paljas and 'Boetie gaan border toe' and 'The Stick' - both war movies.

If you can find:The angel, the bicycle and the chinaman's finger - watch it! One of the best comedies ever to come out of south africa. Jerulalema is apparently also amazing, still on circuit this side.

JERUSALEMA-

it is a brilliant movie.
the focus is less on politics(apartheid) but subtle references to the current social contitions that are/arent pushed by the current political climate...

i love this film

We obviously have different tastes in movies. I hate Leon Schuster! But I must admit, Zulu on my stoep has moments (especially against the political background of the time).

Tsotsi was amazing.

Hansie - sentimental bhoohaha. Not for me: but I know some people that loved it to pieces.

Mr Bones is absolute shite.

That was Jamie Uys, not Pieter Dirk.... you fool. Skating on thin Uys was a kak funny Evita Bezuidenhout movie in 1986. Where oil is discovered in the independent homeland of Bapetikosweti, and of course South Africa wants it back. The only agreement they can reach with President Makoeloeli is if his son Leroy marries a Bezuidenhout, naturally Billie-Jean, Evita's daughter.... I still laugh when I watch it....
