Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told a press conference here on Saturday that more projects were under the consideration of the Central Government. Mr. Balakrishnan said tourism in Kerala was on the growth path and there was no off-season in the State. All the hotels of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) were full during the year-end. The State lacked adequate number of rooms to meet the increasing demand from tourists and the Government would encourage those who construct hotels targeted at tourists.
The Minister said he had had discussions with West Bengal Tourism Minister Manav Mukherjee and it was decided to set up an information centre of the West Bengal Tourism Department in Thiruvananthapuram and that of Kerala Tourism in Kolkata.
A major handicap for promoting travel between Bengal and Kerala was the absence of direct flights between the two States. It was decided by both the Governments to exert pressure on the Centre to start direct flights between Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.
Mr. Balakrishnan said he would soon convene a meeting of major tour operators and air travel agents in Delhi to work out the modalities to facilitate greater movement of tourists from the north to Kerala. He had had preliminary discussions with some persons in the field and found their response quite positive, the Minister said.
Mr. Balakrishnan said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had arrived at a consensus on exempting vehicles carrying tourists from hartals. He would hold discussions with other political parties and the UDF leadership to work out a consensus on the subject.
Yeap, flight connectivity between Kerala and Kolkata is almost non-existent. Right now, one can only fly via Chennai, Bangalore, Hyd or Delhi (?!). With the entry of a host of private airlines into Trivandrum, Kozhikode and Cochin, that should be rectified soon. :)

There is a steady traffic of charter flights from the UK and Russia to Trivandrum, the second busiest such route after Goa. About time, regular services are scheduled. :)

Tender process to be completed in 8 months
# Tender proposals to be placed before the Centre within fortnight
# Kolachal project will not affect Vizhinjam prospects: Minister
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will go for a fresh global tender for the Vizhinjam Container Transhipment Terminal, completing the entire process within the next eight months, Minister for Ports M. Vijayakumar has said.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said the proposal now was to bring the project under the Viability Gap Funding Scheme of the Union Government. The project would then receive the Union Government's grant.
Mr. Vijayakumar said the tender proposal would be placed before the Union Government within a fortnight. The project was awarded to a consortium consisting of Chinese companies and an Indian partner early last year. However, the Union Government did not clear the setting up of the harbour with the involvement of the Chinese companies due to security reasons.
Mr. Vijayakumar said a specific clause would be included in the tender notification stipulating that only companies having the Union Government's security clearance could participate in the bidding. Responding to a question, he said the Tamil Nadu Government's proposal to build a harbour at Kolachal, only a few nautical miles away from Vizhinjam, would not in any way undermine the Vizhinjam project's viability and prospects of getting assistance from the Viability Gap Funding Scheme. Even if Kolachal becomes a harbour, Vizhinjam project would have its significance because of its location in relation to the international shipping route and other ideal natural conditions, he added.
Answering another question, he said the Maritime Development Council should have invited either Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan or him to its meeting held in Kochi recently. (The Chief Minister holds charge of the portfolio of Shipping and Inland Navigation.) The State has already conveyed its protest over this to the Centre.Cheers!!!

Kannan46 January 9th, 2007, 02:06 AM Project to make Ponmudi eco-friendly destination
Forest Minister to inaugurate Rs. 5-lakh project
Thiruvananthapuram: An eco-tourism project being commissioned at Ponmudi on Tuesday is aimed at turning the hill resort into an eco-friendly destination, ensuring security to visitors and protecting the forest grassland ecosystem.
The project will also help the authorities eliminate garbage from the hill resort and create employment opportunities for the people living near the forest land.
The Forest authorities also hope to find a permanent solution to forest fires at Ponmudi during the summer months.
The Thiruvananthapuram Forest Development Agency has joined hands with the Forests and Kerala Tourism departments to implement the project.
Minister for Forests Benoy Viswom will inaugurate the eco-tourism project at a function at Ponmudi on Tuesday. As part of the Rs. 5-lakh project, an existing well has been rebuilt to provide water to the visitors. The Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS), which comprises 120 families, will be in charge of providing facilities for the visitors. Signboards, messages and dustbins will be set up at the resort. Adventure tours will be organised with the assistance of experienced guides to Varayattumotta, Ponmudi is the third eco-tourism project being implemented by the Forest Development Agency in the district after Kallar and Mankayam. Cheers!!!

We hardly see any Indian cities so clean/beautiful like Trivandrum. TVM is really fascinating … Be frank, TVM looks like a European city…I wonder why this beautiful city is not popular in the international community. Other cities of Kerala are more popular than TVM; why it’s like that??? Is it media hypes??
Looks like TVM lacks enough marketing…….^^

Hi friend , you asked why TVM is not getting enough marketing?
We cannot say an exact reason for that. Any way due to this lack of marketing is TVM's strength.

Its vital that such infrastructure projects are fast tracked with clear guidelines on acquistion, compensation and rehabilitation. Logistics, hospitality, entertainment, tourism, manufacturing all would boom... and lok at the employment potentiol!!
Malaysia offers to build expressways
ARUN S
Posted online: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 at 0049 hours IST
NEW DELHI, JAN 8: The Malaysian government has roped in about a dozen companies and proposes to build a network of national expressways spanning 7,000 km.
The project, to be executed on a build-operate-transfer basis in a phased manner, envisages two expressways: one linking Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune; the other connecting Delhi and Kolkata.
Malaysian cabinet minister of works Dato Seri S Samy Vellu told FE that 11 Malaysian companies, including IJM, United Engineers Malaysia Group and Ranhill Corporation, were keen on the project. “The expressway will pave the way for investors pumping in money to set up units along (the expressways). However, land acquisition will have to be done by the Indian government,” he said.
If the proposal passes muster with the Indian government, it could well turn out to be the biggest foreign direct investment in a road project in the country. Infrastructure funding experts estimate the project to cost at least Rs 42,000-56,000 crore, given the ballpark cost of Rs 6-8 crore a km, depending on terrain.
Fast Lane
• Length 7,000 km
• Cost Rs 56,000 crore
• Phase I
Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune
• Phase II
New Delhi to Kolkata
Vellu said the consortium, backed by the Malaysian government, would also ask India to extend a budgetary grant to the project. In India, BOT leases typically have a 20-year concession period. At present, Mumbai-Pune is the only expressway and two others, Delhi-Jaipur and Vadodara- Mumbai, are being planned.

Welcome to the forum, buddy! :)
I assume that the proposed expressway may follow some of the existing NH alignments in which case there may be a slightly easier way forward for land acquisitions since a lot of the adjoining land has been picked up for long-overdue widening projects.
However, let's get the 4-laning of NH-47 started first before looking at a Southern Golden Quadrilateral expressway! :)

Kannan46 January 10th, 2007, 02:41 AM Anchoring a port's strength-- that is the Vizhinjam
When the cruise liner `Island Sky' berthed at Vizhinjam port the other day, the tourists on board lined the multi-tiered decks to marvel at the liner's agility as she lined herself up parallel to the wharf before dropping anchor.
What fascinated the local people present on the wharf was the ability of the port to allow such large ships to come so close to land. "If this is what Vizhinjam can do now, imagine how much more we can do if we have an international port here," asked one person present on the wharf. But then such thoughts were quickly drowned in the din of the `panchavadyam' that greeted the tourists to God's Own Country.
Cheers!!!

Ajay - you are right - we need to have proper 4 laned roads in Kerala first before looking at expressways. For example the proposed north/south kerala expressway must be lying in the grave now....moreover in Kerala land is problem. So the viability of expressways would be questioned
Let them complete the 4 laning of all important intercity highways in Kerala ( including NH47) that I believe is part of phase III (B)

Kannan46 January 11th, 2007, 02:05 AM Trees planted along Kowdiar-LMS Road as part of landscaping scheme for City Roads Improvement Project
Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 60 saplings were planted on the Kowdiar - LMS Road in the city on Wednesday as part of the landscaping scheme for the City Roads Improvement Project.
Law Minister M. Vijayakumar inaugurated the programme by planting the first sapling in front of the Kanakakunnu Palace. Mayor C. Jayan Babu and MLAs V. Sivankutty and Surendran Pillai also planted sapling.
Maintenance
Under the terms of the project agreement, the concessionaire, Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL), will maintain the trees and plants along the road corridors identified for landscaping for a period of 15 years.
Prepared by the Kerala Road Fund Board in consultation with the Department of Forest, horticulture experts and NGOs, the landscaping programme has been designed to replace the trees to be cut down for the roads project and enhance the city's green cover.
All the 14 road corridors identified for development are to be landscaped under the scheme.
The project involves specific plans for greening medians, traffic islands, footpaths and roadsides.
Selection
The selection of species was done by an expert committee comprising professional landscaping consultants and government officials.
The species include hardy local varieties like Kanikonna, Elanhi, Pala, Flame of the Forest, Jacaranda, Poomaruthu and Peltophorum.
The TRDCL has set up a nursery to supply saplings for all the road corridors.
Project officials said the saplings would be protected with tree guards during the initial period of growth.
Periodic maintenance will be carried out to take care of leaf shedding.
The project is designed in such a way that the trees merge with the urban landscape, says an official. Same species will be planted in a linear fashion along a particular corridor to create identity and enhance road aesthetics. Cheers!!!

sathyalal January 11th, 2007, 12:33 PM The SRE-1 takes India into an elite club of countries that have satellite re-entry technology. The space flight will stay in orbit for between 13 and 30 days and is expected to splash down into the Bay of Bengal for recovery.
local crowd has lot to celebrate on this..

SRIHARIKOTA: In a "wonderfully" successful multi-mission, India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C7) majestically took off at 9.23 a.m. on Wednesday from its beachside launch pad at Sriharikota and injected four satellites one after another into precise orbit.
Two satellites belong to India and two are from abroad. This is the PSLV's ninth successful launch in a row, proving that it is a trusted workhorse of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
A highlight of the mission is that one of the four satellites called the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE) will be recovered on January 22 when it falls into the Bay of Bengal after staying in orbit for 11 days. This is the first time that the ISRO is attempting to recover a satellite — a technological challenge on several fronts.
Morale booster
The PSLV-C7 success is a tremendous boost to the morale of the 15,000-strong ISRO community after the failure of its Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) on July 10, 2006.
A jubilant G. Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman, said he had "no words" to describe the success of the "text-book mission." He added: "We have done it... We have put all the four satellites into required orbits. Our boys have done it. It has helped to capture back the confidence of the country in our space missions."
Dr. B.N. Suresh, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, which built PSLV-C7, said: "Four satellites being injected into orbit with the same vehicle is a unique experience for us. There will be four or five launches this year from Sriharikota. This success has given a firm foundation to the launches planned this year."
Of the four satellites, the ISRO's Cartosat-2 is for mapping purposes and its SRE will be a forerunner to the ISRO mastering the re-entry, recoverable and re-usable launch vehicle technologies.
During its stay in orbit, the two payloads on board the SRE will help conduct experiments in micro-gravity.
The two satellites from abroad are LAPAN-TUBSAT, a joint venture of Indonesia and the Technical University of Berlin, and the Pehuensat-I of Argentina.
With the failure of the GSLV at the back of the mind of the PSLV-C7 mission team, the atmosphere was tense in the Mission Control Centre at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. To everybody's relief and joy, the 52-hour countdown went on smoothly without any hold whatsoever. Then, on the dot at 9.23 a.m., the four-stage, 44-metre tall PSLV, which weighs 295 tonnes, fired into life, rose from the first launch pad and cut a path into the clear sky, riding on flames and smoke, and emitting a deep roar that rolled across the island.
All the PSLV-C7 systems functioned with clockwork precision. The four stages, including the six strap-on booster motors, ignited and jettisoned at precise moments. One could see with naked eye the separation of the strap-on motors. A beautiful ball of smoke formed when the first stage hived itself off.
Finally, the fourth stage started injecting the four satellites into the orbit.

satsk3 January 11th, 2007, 03:21 PM Spice Jet to Connect Thiruvananthapuram with Hyderabad:applause:
SpiceJet has targeted to increase its market share to 15 per cent by 2007 from the current nine per cent in a market size of 32 million passengers, which is growing at 35 per cent annually.
The airline, which has a seat capacity of 12,000, is confident of achieving the target as it introduces more aircrafts and destinations in the next few months.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr Sanjay Kumar, Vice-President (Sales and Planning), said airfares could further see a fall of 10-15 per cent, if the ATF (aviation turbine fuel) rates were reduced.
He said the airline would add connect cities of Bhubaneshwar, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram with Hyderabad by the middle of the year. It has also planned to increase the frequency to Mumbai and Bangalore. There are plans to introduce services in the Hyderabad-Kolkata sector. It has also considered to add Indore and Nagpur to its network.
The airline, which registered revenues to the tune of Rs 481 crore in 2005-06, hoped to achieve Rs 1,100 crore this year. "We have already achieved operating breakeven last year," he said.

The CET was started in 1939 ( almost 67 years back), and moved to the present campus around 1960. The buildings might look old fashioned, but it serves its purpose admirably. Most of the campuses in Trivandrum (The Medical College, University College, Arts College etc...) are similar, and lacks the artificaility of the newer colleges. I would any day prefer this than the new concrete nightmares, which unfortunately, is starting to make its appearance inside the CET campus itself.

Sidewinder January 12th, 2007, 04:08 AM T’PURAM: A war between two premier construction companies comes to the open. What is more sickening is that they even dare to take to their hands the rules and regulations of the state for vested interests.
Here is a signboard in the Sasthamangalam-Pippinmoodu road installed by the SI Property (Kerala) Pvt Limited simply to beat their rival group, Skyline Constructions.
The signboard indicates the bump ahead on the road. The bump was erected after the hue and cry of the nearby residents owing to the increasing accidents at the spot. But ironically, the hump itself turned to be a threat to the motorists, especially during night.
Though the bump had already proved an accident spot, the ‘bump-ahead’ signboard placed there turned out to be a mere promotion board of the construction company.
“The board is placed only for the sake of it. Another board is required to indicate that such a signboard is placed there,” said a resident.
With no zebra lines on the bump, motorists fail to notice the bump during night. And as the signboard is without a fluorescent effect, the motorists would not take note of the board.
“Private parties can place signboards with the permission of the traffic officials. But at times, they place it without securing the permission of the authorities eyeing only the promotion of their company,” said J Wilfred, Assistant Commissioner, North (Traffic).
“The signboard should be placed 50 metres from the bump and the bump should be indicated in the signboard with a fluorescent effect so that motorists can notice it during night,” Wilfred said.
Asked about the signboard placed in the Sasthamangalam-Pippinmoodu road, the traffic authorities said: “So far no one has approached us for the permission of erecting such a signboard.”
The PWD (Roads) officials said: “Our department has already stopped giving sanctions to install such signboards. So, obviously that particular signboard was installed illegally.”

sanjupalayat January 12th, 2007, 11:11 AM Sanju,
The CET was started in 1939 ( almost 67 years back), and moved to the present campus around 1960.
Rajesh
rajesh i din ment tat those buildings r not impressive...they are lookin good..
i talked about the landscaping of the campus...even calicut medical college, NITC,campuses are very old...but NITC is having a land scaped campus...i told about that...i am aware that trivandrum engineering college is one of the best eng college in kerala after NIT Calicut...

Palayam Underpass
Sudeesh, it seems to me that the tunnel part of the underpass is well lit but not the approach. I haven't seen any street lamps either around the sides of the approach. How does it feel as motorist in the midnight to go through the underpass?
I have seen so many pictures of the underpass but so far no picture shows the amount of vehicular traffic in the underpass. Is it because motorists choose to bypass the underpass through an alternative route or there is not enough traffic using this underpass? Surely that can't be the case. I remember reading an artice published a day after the underpass was thrown open to vehicular traffic , that there was near traffic jam .
Is this underpass a single or dual carriage way?

Keyestee - The underpass leads to Bakery Junction and will link up with the u/c flyover. However, since the latter is not complete, traffic coming from and going to Thampanoor, Chalai, Karamana and on to Tamilnadu has been diverted via Statue Jn. Hence, the underpass is yet to be used to capacity.
Yes, Arijeet, the work on the flyover has slowed down due to the delay in fund release to TRDCL. However, that issue has now been resolved and work is again picking up. The entire substructure upto the pierheads have been completed and superstructure work is expected to commence shortly. :)

godman January 15th, 2007, 09:15 AM T’PURAM: It seems the premature death of many of its slum rehabilitation projects has not discouraged the City Corporation from coming out with yet another scheme for slum-dwellers in the city.
The corporation has now included the renovation of the Kannammoola Bund colony, Kadakampally Two-Cent colony and Rajiv Nagar Wireless colony in the Basic Service to Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Though many schemes and projects were identified in the past 18 years to create a decent housing condition for the Kannamoola Bund colony residents, none had borne fruit. The residents have been spending the monsoons wading through drainage water and huddling under leaking ceilings.
The Valmiki Ambedkar Awaz Yojna (VAMBAY) scheme conceptualised years ago to provide houses for slum-dwellers under a Centrally-assisted project had failed to materialise completely.
The renovation of the Chenkalchoola colony under the project was also left half-way. Even after receiving funds for the project from the Centre, it did not take off in many slums owing to technical problems, the corporation officials say.
Under the BSUP scheme, the corporation had entrusted the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford), an organisation promoting low-cost houses, with the preparation of a detailed project report.
Instead of going for independent houses, Costford has planned 23 units of five-storeyed houses for 114 families in the Bund colony.
According to the plan outlay by Costford, the housing colony will come up in two acres and four cents of land near the Amayizhanjan canal. Apart from the housing units, the colony will have a community hall which can accommodate as many as 250 people.
An open space for kids to play and an anganwadi have also been included in the outlay. A market entirely run by the residents has also been conceptualised. The colony will have a study centre for kids which will also benefit the mentally-challenged children in the colony.
The renovation of the Bund colony alone is expected to cost around Rs 1.52 crore. The total fund for the development of the three slums under JNNURM is estimated at Rs 6 crore.
The residents will be shifted to a temporary shelter while the renovation works is on. The work is expected to commence in March.
The corporation officials organised a slide-show of the housing scheme at the Kunnukuzhy UP School on Sunday for the Bund colony residents.

sathyalal January 15th, 2007, 09:50 AM Thiruvananthapuram: A space training centre to mould generations of space scientists will be set up here by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair said today.
Talking to newspersons at the airport on his arrival from Bangalore after the successful launch of PSLV C-7, Nair said such a training facility already existed at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) on a small scale.
"But we need more scientists in the coming years for accomplishing our future missions, he said, adding that the ISRO was facing a shortage of human resources especially after the emergence of the information technology industry.
He said no decision was taken yet on the question of whether the training centre should have the status of deemed university. According to sources, Thiruvananthapuram was selected for setting up the training centre in view of its proximity to major ISRO installations where advanced training for fresh entrants were already on.

Ajaypp January 15th, 2007, 10:09 AM More passenger facilities at Thiruvananthapuram Central
Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 14
Southern Railway has set up additional passenger facilities at Thiruvananthapuram Central in line with its expansion/upgradation programme envisaged under the `Touch & Feel' concept. The Member of Parliament, Mr Pannyan Raveendran, inaugurated these facilities at a function here on Friday in the presence of the Divisional Railway Manager, Mr S. Vijayakumaran.
An air-conditioned dormitory, improved and extended parking and new pedestrian entry were the new facilities opened. The Rs 15-lakh dormitory will have nine beds in exclusive `hut' format for as many passengers, with locking and storing facilities. Daily charges per bed have been fixed at Rs 200.
Thiruvananthapuram Central handles about two lakh passengers every day, a sizeable number being daily commuters. Parking has been a major problem at the station, which is now being addressed as part of the `Touch & Feel' initiative.
An additional 1,500 sq m has been provided for parking vehicles, which takes the total area available to 5,500 sq m. Covered area admeasures to 400 sq m, use of which will be charged at a higher rate. These works have been executed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.
In the third initiative, a new pedestrian entry has been provided to the Central Station on the west side, opposite to the main bus terminal. This is expected to facilitate direct and easy entry to season ticket holders.
Trivandrum Central is Kerala's busiest station and the second busiest in the Southern Railway. It is being upgraded as one 16 world-class stations across India at a cost of Ts 100 Crore. :)

ajithv January 15th, 2007, 01:26 PM Hello Friends,
My Name is Ajith.I am frequent visitor of this forum since I am also from TVPM.Till 2005 I was engaged with the TVPM City roads Improvement Project and worked as part to Complete the Airport Corridor,Palayam Underpass,Vellayambalam-Kaudiar Road,KIMS Kumarapuram,BP-1 to Join @ Eanchakkal,Upto the Completion of the Piers @Bakery Junction. At First I was very much excited & delighted to be a part of capital City's Development.Later I understood that the diplomacy is overruling than Techninality & Specifications. Now working in th 4/ 6 lane of NH-7 project in Tamilnadu which is also a BOT project under NHDP(North-South Corridor). Here I've to involve with 17 Underpasses where it was very difficult to construct a single Underpass in Kerala.I read through some of the threads tha the Palayam Underpass is 4 laned and is of dual carriage way.NO.
It is not faour laned.By putting a median at the centre don't make it a 4 lane. The total carriage way of the Palayam Underpass is only 11m(excluding the median;meadian is of 0.3m);the same width as in Sanghumugham-All Saints road.
Anyway I'm very happy to see the development of TVPM

There is a major difference in constructing underpasses in highways and in towns with relatively low density and constructing one bang in the center of the CBD, that too in a city with very high population density.
I do not recall anyone claiming that it is 4 laned. I believe Ajay or Sudheesh had pointed out that the carriageway is only 11 meters. However it is dual carriageway.

ajithv January 16th, 2007, 04:49 AM I didn't mentioned that it is very difficult to built within the city having large density of population. Also I didn't mentioned that it is not dual carriageway. The underpass was constructed in 8 months. The reason u people may not know. But It could have been completed as per our schedule ie;2.5 months ahead.Anyway I don't want to reveal all these things here. But I would like to appreciate the trders @ Palayam for their full support. We suffered a lot @ the Chackai bridge location with the locals.
I'm very much happy to see that Our Own City Is RISING!!!
