More coming soon! GVNY August 10th, 2005, 06:26 AM Give me a few moments to put some more up. While you wait, read this: New York is the concentrate of art and commerce and sport and religion and entertainment and finance, bringing to a single compact arena the gladiator, the evangelist, the promoter, the actor, the trader and the merchant. It carries on its lapel the unexpungeable odor of the long past, so that no matter where you sit in New York you feel the vibrations of great times and tall deeds, of queer people and events and undertakings. New York is nothing like Paris; it is nothing like London; and it is not Spokane multiplied by sixty, or Detroit multiplied by four. It is by all odds the loftiest of cities. -- E. B. White, This Is New York Novelist and essayist E. B. White wrote the words above more than 50 years ago, but his characterization of New York remains accurate today. And though the grandeur and importance of New York has not changed, the city is in a constant state of flux. Restaurants and nightclubs become trendy overnight, and then die under the weight of their own popularity. (Yogi Berra had the perfect comment for that very phenomenon: "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded.") Broadway shows, exercise fads, city politics, and even neighborhoods are all subject to the same Big Apple fickleness. But within this ebb and flow lies the answer to why we New Yorkers persist in loving our city so much, despite the high rents, the noise, the crowds, the cab drivers who don't know Lincoln Center from the Lower East Side, and the more stark realities of high-security-alert days and living in the shadow of great tragedy. Nowhere else is the challenge so tough, the pace so relentless, the stimuli so ever-changing and insistent -- and the payoff so rewarding. It is why we go on; it is why we proudly persist in living our vibrant lives here. Come witness New York's astonishing resilience for yourself -- it's reason enough to visit. GVNY August 10th, 2005, 09:25 AM Here comes my next update! GVNY August 10th, 2005, 09:25 AM And by the way, I have found hundreds of more photos of old New York. This thread will stretch to over 15 pages! GVNY August 10th, 2005, 09:27 AM Waiting for the next page! GVNY August 10th, 2005, 09:30 AM Why doesn't anyone else leave comments? This pisses me off trying to get the pages going so I can post more photos. C'mon people, contribute! I post all of these photos, the least you can do after viewing them is begin a discussion on them and their content. B.Tinoff August 10th, 2005, 09:57 AM These are some of the greatest nyc shot ive ever seen. . . from the overturned warship to the construction of the Chrysler building, and so on. Bravo! The Savoy-Plaza fitted so well in the middle of the other 2 buildings. What a shame the f****** GM decided to build that white box on its place. dreamdealer August 17th, 2005, 01:41 AM Anybody can tell me why Singer Building was destroyed? So sad that landmarks like that are gone, losses in Europe, cause WWs, are more understandable to me. MetLife and Woolworth are just tiny younger and still in good shape, so what the hell happend to the Singer? The old skyline was magnificent anyway. GVNY August 18th, 2005, 03:32 PM The Singer Building was destroyed, sadly, because of the small amount of floor space each story contained. More photos coming soon. Ive only ever seen a few pics of this one but have always wondered what it was, its bound to have been demolished by now though! Buse September 8th, 2005, 07:23 PM I think it is 60 Wall Street, (1 (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=131018)), (2 (http://www.skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=26751)), demolished in 1977 and replaced by this one (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=114109). If I am correct then the building was build for the Cities Service Company, just as the neigbouring skyscraper at 70 pine street (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=114432). The buildings used to be connected, so that 70 pine street (American International) was known as the 60 Wall Tower. http://img335.imageshack.us/img335/1774/nr15rv.gif part of: http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/5409/nr23bg.gif http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6096/nr36kb.gif lovecharlie September 10th, 2005, 05:28 PM Thanks for that Buse, I think u r right, I`ve got a nice 10 by 8 1930`s photo of New York on my wall and this building is right in the middle of it, and it always intrigued me to find out what it was, information about older buildings in New York can be surprisingly easy to find if u know how or spend ages lookin for it, this building however I could never find anything, and that made me want to find it even more lol. I did think it had probably been knocked down for the Morgan just simply because of its position. 1977 it was demolished, the year I was born. lol. Funny thing is, even though NY's skyline has changed a lot over the decades, you still know it's New York. Many other cities look totally unrecognizable when you look at pictures of them from 75 years ago.
