The Ting Kau is interesting to me that they would, im assuming, built that artificial island in the middle of the waterway for the support tower. Why not just make a larger suspension span that wouldn't require blocking out the middle of the waterway. That strait of water is not that wide that a single span is unreasonable. curious

The third one that you crossed is not featured here. It's relatively small connecting Tsing Yi and Kwai Chung.

配合金融中心風格 增色彩添花槽
中區天橋後年換新裝
22/06/2006

http://the-sun.orisun.com/channels/news/20060622/img/sn07062205_big.jpg

http://the-sun.orisun.com/channels/img/endmarker.gif

HK's tropical typhoons pack quite a bit of wind, and having that support tower in the middle mitigates this effect on the bridge.

WOOOW!!! I only have two things to say:
1) Would this network of bridges and tunnels connecting Kowloon to Airport be the costliest transportation network built b/c of the construction of the airport? And,
2) AFAIK, the 2 carriageways to the sides of the AEL (Airport Express) are for use during emergencies or typhoons.

The bridges themselves are nothing that special, plenty examples of things similar to that around the world, but the proximity of them to each other makes it an amazing view, if you get the right shot!

They are to suspend the bridge deck. Nobody wants to build a 1-km long simply supported beam, I guess.

1-km isn't that long, there are plenty of simply supported bridges with that span over water out there.

The decision of using a cable-suspened bridge over supporting beam/column was because there is a need of 50m+ height clearence and wide open water for container ship travel underneath. Supporting from below would not allow the wide gaps between supporting structures and could be very dangerous if there was a container ship collide into the bridge. The bridge could actually fall down with the massive momentum. This concept applies to Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Moon Bridges also.

Second, a three-towers cable-stayed bridge was used because Tsing Ma Bridge was right there, and it would give a more diverse bridge type in the area rather than two identical bridges. Simply, looks better.

I cannot think of any simply supported bridge with a 1-km long span in between two columns though...?

I was thinking series of simply supported bridge (multi-columns over the distance). :)

I dont think it is possible (or else very very costly) to build a 'simply supported bridge' with a single span of over 1km, as the stress would not be transferred else where. (I'm guessing by simple u mean either girders, box girders or beam bridges)

And building an artificial "island" is hardly new. Though it isn't really an island the SF Bay Bridge built an artificial concrete anchorage for two suspension bridges, and mapped the crossing through the natural treasure island in order to reduce costs.

Tsing Lung Bridge
(plan withdrawn and restudied)
The Tsing Lung Bridge will be a suspension bridge with a main span of 1418 metres between the towers, which is 41 metres longer than the Tsing Ma Bridge. It will become the fourth longest suspension bridge in the world upon completion. However, due to slow growth in traffic and the opposition from the residents, the plan was pulled back and might be replaced by alternate road link. Implementation time is still indefinite.

Hong Kong region does not need these many bridges. The airports, ferries, existing roads, and mass transit are capable of handling traffic, perhaps more emphasis on using mass transit. I believe they're over planning growth and future usage < capacity.

EricIsHim
February 10th, 2007, 07:46 PM
^^^ If the central core can't handle the traffic, it doesn't matter how the outside network expand but it still wouldn't help the city traffic.

From capacity point of view, Tsing Lung isn't necessary. It only connects Tuen Mun and Lantau not a direct link to the boarder. Tsing Ma, Ting Kau and Route 3 serve that function better. The link is nowhere near its capacity. The problem is commercial traffic doesn't want to pay the tunnel fee and using Tuen Mun instead. But I guess it is still good to have a second link connecting Lantau and the mainland just in case there is something happen on Tsing Ma.

Ma Wan is such a disappointment. They could've done with more spaced out towers to create a more comfortable, lower density living environment, like discovery bay, but perhaps with even better planning, instead they built just another housing estate.

Actually, Ma Wan is really serene and is extremely spacious. It's just like a resort. The towers are very short and the views are quite good - you get ocean views on both ends. Too bad it's right below the flight path though.

^^ Yea, but it's a whole line of buildings... still too high density imo, of course, it's sort of an actual residential complex as well, so I can understand, but from the air they look too close together.

Yes, and that is why I'm a bit disappointed, would've been cool (I suppose not from the developer's POV ) if an even more resort like development was built, something very UN-Hong Kong.

Recent findings from China University highlight research in civil engineering
14 April 2009
Science Letter

2009 APR 15 - (NewsRx.com) -- According to a study from Guangzhou, People's Republic of China, "Long-span bridges are prone to wind-induced response, and aerostatic analysis is a very important tool for predicting their behaviours under strong wind conditions. While there are many powerful commercial finite-element analysis software packages, the aerostatic stability analysis of long-span bridges cannot be conducted by using these packages because of the dependency of wind loading on the deformation of the bridge structure."

"To obtain accurate aerostatic analysis results, the effect of this type of 'load non-linearity' must be taken into account, and therefore special in-house computer programs are often required. This paper introduces a novel approach to the aerostatic stability analysis of bridge structures and presents a new algorithm based on the new approach. A commercial software package is chosen as the analysis engine and is integrated with new modules developed through application program interface (API). The aerostatic stability analysis of Hong Kong Ting Kau Bridge is conducted using this algorithm, illustrating the effectiveness of this approach," wrote H. Ma and colleagues, China University.

The researchers concluded: "The new approach is expected to be applicable to other types of advanced analyses of structures."

Ma and colleagues published the results of their research in Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings (A new approach to aerostatic analysis of long-span bridges. Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2009;162(2):129-135).

For additional information, contact H. Ma, S China University Technology, State Key Laboratory Subtrop Bldg Science, Guangzhou, Guangdong, People's Republic of China.

The publisher of the journal Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings can be contacted at: Thomas Telford Publishing, Thomas Telford House, 1 Heron Quay, London E14 4JD, England.

This article was prepared by Science Letter editors from staff and other reports.

Bridges can make mean streets safe
The Standard
Monday, September 07, 2009

Footbridges to ease congestion and boost safety on the busy streets of Mong Kok should be an integral part of the district's HK$100 million facelift, a Democratic Party councillor says.

The call came after almost half the 444 people polled by the party between July and August said the area is not safe for pedestrians.

Yau Tsim Mong district councillor Lam Ho-yeung suggested connecting buildings with footbridges to separate pedestrians from vehicles, adding that a new footbridge was already planned for Argyle Street.

The party also said the situation warrants an urgent review of traffic arrangements.

More than 70 percent of those surveyed blamed heavy traffic and 26 percent a lack of pedestrian crossings. Almost half said the length of time the green light is on for pedestrians is too short while 45 percent said the crossings are too narrow.

The green light time in some Mong Kok areas is as short as 10 seconds and the crossing just one meter wide.

Town planner Ng Wing-fai said the Urban Renewal Authority's facelift project will make the streets even more congested because more tourists will be drawn there.

He added that increased pedestrianization would pile traffic pressure on streets where cars are allowed.

Lam suggested converting three sites in the area covering 12,000 square meters into a transport hub for coaches and minibuses.

"Minibuses and coaches can park there to avoid clogging the traffic," he said.

LCQ6: Expansion of the footbridge system in Mong Kok
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Government Press Release

http://i514.photobucket.com/albums/t342/ayanami2169/P1110838.jpg
Author : http://www.flickr.com/photos/10582130@N03/

Following is a question by the Hon James To Kun-sun and a written reply by the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Ms Eva Cheng, at the Legislative Council meeting today (April 21):

Question:

In his 2008-2009 Policy Address, the Chief Executive stated that the Government would "take forward pedestrian schemes to minimise vehicle-pedestrian conflicts and improve roadside air quality" and also plan to extend the footbridge system in Mong Kok to cover central Mong Kok and the Tai Kok Tsui area. The Government anticipated that the technical feasibility study on the extension of the footbridge system would be completed in early 2010. Meanwhile, it has been reported that in respect of the re-provisioning of the government facilities at Sai Yee Street to dovetail with the extension works of the footbridge system, the Secretary for Development has indicated recently the plan to relocate the offices of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) at Sai Yee Street to a factory building, so as to vacate the site for commercial and public transport interchange purposes, etc. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council:

(a) of the latest progress of the above feasibility study; when it anticipates to complete the study as well as draw up the design of the plan and the construction schedule;

(b) of the progress of relocating the offices of WSD, and when it anticipates to formally implement the relocation plan; as the representatives of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) indicated earlier at a meeting of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council that a suitable location had been identified for re-provisioning the facility of FEHD adjacent to the offices of WSD, whether the Government anticipates that the relocation timetable for the facilities of the two departments can dovetail with each other, so as to vacate the two sites for combined development;

(c) given that the extension works of the Mong Kok Road footbridge system across Nathan Road were originally scheduled to commence in 2007, and have so far been delayed for quite some time, and that the Government has indicated recently that the works can commence in the fourth quarter of this year, of the reasons for repeated delays in commencing the works, the latest progress, whether the works can commence as scheduled, and when they are expected to complete; and

(d) apart from the above plan, whether the Government currently has other plans to minimise vehicle-pedestrian conflicts in the Mong Kok district, so as to improve pedestrian environment and safety; if so, of the details?

Reply:

President,

(a) Following announcement of the plan to extend the footbridge system in Mong Kok in the Policy Address delivered by the Chief Executive in October 2008, the Transport Department (TD) engaged a consultant in March 2009 to conduct an initial study on the expansion of the existing footbridge system in Mong Kok. Apart from examining various options for the footbridge proposal, the study also involved the collection of views of the relevant District Council and area committees. The study is near completion, and the Government consulted the Legislative Council Panel on Transport and the Transport Advisory Committee on the proposed initial options on January 22 and February 5, 2010 respectively. Following conclusion of the study in end April 2010, the Highways Department will proceed with the detailed technical feasibility study. We will draw up the works programme after completion of the study and confirmation of the feasibility of the works in question.

(b) According to the information provided by the Development Bureau, the Water Supplies Department (WSD) is exploring the relocation of their office to a suitable industrial building in New Territories West so as to take forward the relocation of their Sai Yee Street office in Mong Kok. At the same time, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) is studying the feasibility of relocating their Sai Yee Street facilities to West Kowloon, and a preliminary planning of the facilities is underway. After they have decided on the new sites, the WSD and FEHD will work closely with various departments concerned, in particular the respective District Offices, on the relocation timetable so as to tie in with the overall redevelopment of their existing sites in Mong Kok.

(c) The westward extension of the Mong Kok Road footbridge system straddling Nathan Road is the remaining part of the Mong Kok Road and Sai Yee Street footbridge system, which is to be constructed by a private developer. The developer has completed the preliminary investigation works for the project earlier. However, as there are legal procedures remaining to be completed, and as the works involve diversion of underground public utilities which requires careful examination of various relocation options, the construction works for the proposed footbridge could not commence as scheduled. In the interim, the Administration has kept the Legislative Council and the relevant District Council posted on developments.

The Administration and the developer have now broadly agreed on the necessary arrangements for the advance works for construction of the footbridge (including the diversion of underground public utilities), and the works are expected to commence in around the fourth quarter of this year. The relevant government departments will liaise with the developer and the public utility companies to take forward the preparatory work required prior to the commencement of works. Diversion of underground public utilities will take roughly three and a half years, while the construction of the footbridge will take about two and a half years. The Administration has informed the District Council of the latest works schedule, and will continue to liaise closely with the developer for an early start of the works.

(d) The TD will continue to monitor the traffic situation in Mong Kok. Apart from actively following up on the extension proposal for the footbridge system in Mong Kok, where necessary, it will also propose improvements and take follow-up actions to enhance the pedestrian environment in the district.
