josema_call June 8th, 2007, 01:13 PM How is Skoda Octavia selling in Europe? It's going to debut in China and is expected to be a hot sell, because it is well equipped and going to cost less than its competitors (well because it is a Skoda).
In Madrid is near the top players but it isn't one of them. It is one of the taxi-drivers favorite cars.
Anyway, it's build over an A3 chassis which is a smaller car, so it cannot fight with other "big cars" as Passat, A4, Avensis, BMW3 (I know this one is a premium but the size is similar), ...

When I said taxi-drivers car, I meant that it's a good car 'cause taxi-drivers look for confidence :hammer: They need to trust on their working tool :)

Alex Von Königsberg June 15th, 2007, 06:11 PM Lada Priora looks nice? Are you serious? Come on, it's the twenty first century now.
A lot of Russians actually wish the Russian companies such as VAZ, GAZ, etc to finally disappear, so that the government will not impose additional taxes and fees on imported vehicles that are safer and much more reliable.

Man, cars like this still roam our streets: :)

Compared to all the new ones from abroad that are also present in great numbers, the contrast is just too striking.
And Priora will blend in and will not attract attention, because it looks just like some cheap model of Daewoo or Hundai or even better. So yeah, it looks nice.
A lot of Russians actually wish the Russian companies such as VAZ, GAZ, etc to finally disappear, so that the government will not impose additional taxes and fees on imported vehicles that are safer and much more reliable.
Yeah, many wish so. But it's not a viable variant, we cannot afford to lose our automobile industry, our drivers will have to deal with this.
Btw, Renault Logan costs less than Priora, so if Priora proves to be complete shit it will have serious problems with customers.
This is a concept of next Lada model, Lada C

Alex Von Königsberg June 16th, 2007, 07:23 AM Well, I am from Russia myself, and I know a bit about how things are done there. The government keeps the import taxes on foreign vehicles very high, so that they can sell crappy Ladas and Volgas at high prices. They call it "protecting the national car makers." Being protected in this way, national car makers continue making crap knowing that the consumers won't have much choice. If the government lifted the import taxes, then VAZ would be forced either to start making safer and reliable cars in order to withstand competition or go down the toilet. Either way - the consumer would be the winner. So far, the Russian consumer is the looser thank to own government.
Gamma-Hamster June 16th, 2007, 10:25 AM . They call it "protecting the national car makers." Being protected in this way, national car makers continue making crap knowing that the consumers won't have much choice.
Daewoo, Hyundai, Renault etc, - this manufacturers produce cheaper models than Lada Priora so there is a lot of choice.
If the government lifted the import taxes, then VAZ would be forced either to start making safer and reliable cars in order to withstand competition or go down the toilet.
Russian automobile industry going down the toilet thanks to influx of 10 years old stolen cars from Europe for cheap price is indeed a wonderfull variant
Alex Von Königsberg June 17th, 2007, 01:12 AM Yeah... You remove the word "stolen", and see your argument going down the ... as well  Anyway, removing the import taxes is the only way to make Russian auto industry produce better cars. Agree?

Yep, I'm gonna use the transient property...
If A=B and B=C then A=C,
So if Golf Chassis = A3 Chassis and Golf Chassis = Octavia Chassis
we can asure that A3 Chassis = Octavia Chassis, can't we?
It's a question of scale economies, to reduce our costs..., that's why many manufacturers share projects and then give the "final touch" to their product in order to make different.
Anyway, this is a funny discussion :)

i don't think that i have enought financial data to answer this question.
Btw, Renault is going to make Logan that will cost 3000$, AvtoVAZ will be hit hard by this. And if Toyota will make car for 7000$ it will be just overkill.

Fiat group will be expanding its operations in China with the latest confirmation that it will be building its Alfa Romeo 159 saloon in China. The cars will be built under the recently formed joint-venture between Fiat and China’s Chery Auto, with production tipped to start in Chery’s plant in Wuhu just outside of Shanghai. The announcement comes from several Alfa execs who spoke recently with Automotive News, revealing that roughly 30,000 to 35,000 cars will be manufactured starting in 2009.
Earlier this month, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed that the Italian giant was in talks with Chery surrounding a possible deal to build Alfas but until now there was no mention of which models would be produced.
Despite rising demand for Alfa Romeos in China, production is still at least two years away and according to Marchionne, the talks are yet to be finalized. He added that the Chinese built Alfas must have the high levels of quality expected from a premium brand and that it would take some time to iron out the bugs.
The other major hurdle is to find a supplier either in China or outside that is willing to build quality components for Alfa’s Chinese operations. Fiat originally hoped to build the previous 156 sedan in China but had to drop its plans due to a lack of suitable suppliers. The reason is that it’s more lucrative for the suppliers to sell the parts to western countries where Alfa Romeo models are sold.

AltinD June 29th, 2007, 10:44 PM Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster
The new high-performance convertible is powered by the same AMG V8 compressor as the coupé, delivering 617bhp, and uses the same AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission to accelerate the Roadster from zero to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. The maximum speed is unchanged, at 207mph. So it seems there is no compromise in performance or ride, it simply offers the pleasures of a fully retractable top, to give undiluted open-air driving pleasure. Mercedes tells us that conversation is still possible at well over 200km/h (124 mph) with the roof down, thanks to the favourable aeroacoustics.
The retractable top itself is said to “blend harmoniously into the flowing lines of the SLR McLaren”, although the initial announcement carried no photographs of the car with the roof up… so it remains to be seen. The roof material, itself “newly developed”, is available in three different colours, and the roof opens and closes semi-automatically in less than 10 seconds. To open, the roof needs to be unlocked from the windscreen frame and briefly raised, after which it folds away electrically.

A high degree of safety is ensured by unique carbonfibre crash elements, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed rollover bars. The specification also features adaptive airbags, knee and side airbags as well as seatbelt tensioners and a tyre-pressure monitoring system. Standard equipment includes semi-aniline-leather-upholstered carbonfibre bucket seats, which can be individually adapted to the driver and front passenger by means of differently sized seat pads; dual-zone automatic air-conditioning; a high-quality BOSE premium sound system; a multifunction sport steering wheel with gearchange paddles, and a navigation system with integral radio and CD player.

alvse July 16th, 2007, 03:03 AM Unleashing the 2008 Ford Falcon Orion
13 July 2007
Neil McDonald
No longer top secret. Take a sneak peak at the new Falcon for 2008 with its more refined style.
The cover is blown on the best-kept automotive secret of the year — the 2008 Ford Falcon. Heavily camouflaged photos and artist's impressions of Ford's next Falcon, codenamed Orion, might be popping up as the launch date nears, but these photos obtained by CARSguide reveal exactly what the newcomer looks like.
These top-secret photos of Ford's high-performance vehicles show it clearly has Holden Special Vehicles in its sights with these aggressively styled FPV sedans, the F6, GT and GT-P. The FPV cars also give a strong indication of the overall styling direction for the bread-and-butter Falcons.
Regular Orions will have the same shape and style, only missing the performance trimmings seen on the FPV cars.
The look is sharper, more contemporary and significantly more refined than the almost 10-year-old current design, which started life in the 1998 AU Falcon.
Orion will get a new body on proven mechanicals, meaning the existing six-cylinder and V8 engines will carry over with improved fuel economy. The suspensions, too, are expected to be retained, but with improvements in ride and handling. It's clear though, the FPV cars are designed to shock. They have deep front bumpers and aggressive grille treatments, but the standard car will also get similar 'eyebrow' headlights that flow into a rising wedge-like shoulder line just below the window line, which in turn flows into the car's boot.
The front is also designed to be more pedestrian-friendly and the angular headlights look similar to the new Mondeo, due out later this year. The FPV cars will get distinctive blacked-out headlight surrounds that arch down to the below-bumper foglights.
The cars are set off by body kits, big 19-inch wheels and pronounced bonnet bulges to hide the powerful V8s on the GT and GT-P.
Performance for the FPV V8s is also believed to have been increased to more than 300kW.
To contain that power, some FPV models could sport cross-drilled high-performance Brembo brakes, normally the domain of more expensive European sportscars.
High-end models are expected to get xenon headlights. Matching the contemporary looks are new pull-style door handles that replace the recessed handles of the current Falcons.
Following a European trend, the rear-view mirrors will now feature indicator lights.
As expected, some of the key problem areas of the BF Falcon have been addressed.
The current car's narrow rear-door opening, long criticised by fleet operators, is now more curved and appears to be longer.
This will allow for a wider opening door for rear-seat passengers. Like the current Falcon, the boot is flat and the thinner tail-lights now wrap around the rear end like an Audi.
The FPV cars sport dual and quad exhausts, an under-bumper diffuser and rear spoilers.
The flared “venturi-effect” venting at the side of the rear bumpers is a styling point.
Underneath the Falcon is said to adopt the Territory's virtual pivot control link front suspension, which ensures crisper turn-in and more precision.
The interior, already a strong point with the current car, has also come in for a makeover.
There will be more a pronounced console separating the front-seat passenger and driver and a reworked dashboard and gauges that, like the VE Commodore, will also include an LED speedo readout.
FPV models are also likely to carry over the high-set gauges on top of the dashboard, but they will be better integrated in the same way as the gauges in the Focus XR5. Quality, safety and equipment levels have also moved up-market. Ford is expected to offer curtain airbags, electronic-stability control and a substantially stronger body. The company is said to have been benchmarking Audi interior quality levels.
In an effort to trim weight, Ford is believed to have been trialling a space-saver spare for the car, in a similar fashion to the VE Commodore, which has made a spacesaver standard and full-size spare a $100 option.
Apart from what we know about the FPV cars, Ford has also registered the names R6, G and G6, which could point to new models.
However, it is not uncommon for car companies to register a whole batch of new names, then not use them.
But given the axing of the long-wheelbase Fairlane range, there is a possibility Ford may introduce a higher-level luxury car above the Fairmont Ghia, which could utilise the G model name. This could then fill the gap left by the outgoing Fairlane.
The current 5.4-litre Fairlane G8 is the long-wheelbase range-topper.
The trickle of information on the Orion has just turned into an avalanche. When it is eventually launched next year, the Falcon nameplate will be reaching the ripe old age of 48.
It has become an Australian icon and in recent years has been revered as one of the best-handling, locally-built large cars available.
The Falcon debuted with the XK in September 1960. The car and its successor, the XL, were based on a Canadian design, with some minor modifications for our conditions.
Early examples were not tough enough for our roads and needed substantial beefing up.
It took until the launch of the XM in 1964 for the Falcon to have more serious claims to being a car designed and engineered by Australians for Australian conditions.
In 1965 the Falcon was named car of the year, a title it won again in 1966 with the XR Falcon and again in 2002 with the BA Falcon.

A very impressive car indeed! Looking forward to it! It is a lot more modelled to the Australian market, it is good to see Ford is sticking with a more Australian design rather than opting for a more Euro look like Holden have done with the VE and those horrible wheel arches/flares. Although I don't like the way they have made the headlight surrounds and below black, it doesnt suit it, but I guess its different.

The IS220d has a 400Nm torque, which is even higher that that of the IS350(375Nm).
You folks in the US still have a very twisted idea of what diesel engines are like. ;)

Torque is fine, but you forget about the straight roads we have in America.
I don't think there's anything wrong with diesels, they're certainly very fine engines nowadays, great torque and even better fuel economy, but I still can't imagine getting in a performance car, starting it, and hearing that noise.

japanese001 October 6th, 2007, 06:20 AM I announced that Nissan Motor developed battery car "PIVO 2" of 3-passenger. I exhibit it as concept car for Tokyo mortor show to begin on 26th. The direction of the tire turns 90 degrees and can move to the cross direction, and column parking becomes easy. In front of the driver's seat, it was equipped with the small robot which I estimated a feeling from the expressions of the vehicle driver and talked to for a friend sense.
Small robot analyzes the position of eyes and the mouth of the vehicle driver and distinguishes feelings such as "pleasant" "anger". It is said that I can enjoy a feeling talking with a friend. In conjunction with a map of the car navigation, I guide the place of the destinations such as stores by a sound.
I arrange four motors in each tire of the previous rear wheel as power source. I lost the axle which linked the tire to the engine, and each tire was able to change a direction freely. As for the main body of body, the all around can be worse including column parking 360 degrees freely to turn.

Air-Car Ready for Mass Production
The world’s first commercial compressed air-powered vehicle is rolling towards the production line. The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre, will be built by India’s largest automaker, Tata Motors.
The Air Car uses compressed air to push its engine’s pistons. It is anticipated that approximately 6000 Air Cars will be cruising the streets of India by 2008. If the manufacturers have no surprises up their exhaust pipes the car will be practical and reasonably priced. The CityCat model will clock out at 68 mph with a driving range of 125 miles.
Refueling is simple and will only take a few minutes. That is, if you live nearby a gas station with custom air compressor units. The cost of a fill up is approximately $2.00. If a driver doesn't have access to a compressor station, they will be able to plug into the electrical grid and use the car’s built-in compressor to refill the tank in about 4 hours.
The compressed air technology is basically just a way of storing electrical energy without the need for costly, heavy, and occasionally toxic batteries. So, in a sense, this is an electric car. It just doesn't have an electric motor.
But don't let anyone tell you this is an "emissions free" vehicle. Sure, the only thing coming out of the tailpipe is air. But, chances are, fossil fuels were burned to create the electricity. In India, that mostly means coal. But the carbon emissions per mile of these things still far outdoes any gasoline car on the market.
Unfortunately, the streets of North America may never see the Air Car, though; it's light-weight, glued-together fiberglass construction might not do so well in our crash tests. However, that does not mean the Air car is confined to the sub-continent. Nègre has signed deals to bring its design to 12 more countries, including Germany, Israel and South Africa.
And this isn't the last we'll hear of the technology. The folks making the Air Car are already working on a hybrid version that would use an on-board, gasoline-powered compressor to refill the air tanks when they run low. Negre says that technology could easily squeeze a cross country trip out of one tank of gasoline.

gladisimo June 4th, 2008, 06:10 AM A bit of a misleading post, it's supposed to combine a can of air with 8 gallons of conventional fuel to go 800-1000 miles... plus u need the compressor to fill the air tank, and electricity to drive the compressor... so it's not really 100 mpg, unless the engine itself drives the compressor to suck in air while driving, which means it's sort of like a hybrid.
And they need to work on the design
But still, good start, I suppose

Look at the interior in the new Challenger in the image above, and then look at any similar priced European car interior. It's terrible as ever for Dodge/Chrysler.
Plus it's based on the 300C/Charger/Old E-Class chassis/platform so it won't handle terribly well, and it'll be heavier than Wales.

Nobody likes current Chrysler interiors. Read any Chrysler or Dodge review and the author will be sure to mention the poor interior. You can thank the Germans for that. Chrysler was making great cars with good interiors until Diamler took over and raped the company.
The current owner, Cerberus, is trying to redesign the interiors of Chrysler vehicles (starting with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger) as quickly as possible.

czm3 June 24th, 2008, 03:07 PM The LH cars.
I agree that the LH cars were the best that Crysler had to offer at the time, but to say that those cars had good interiors is a bit of an exaggeration. My guess is that you probably were not driving back then, because if you were, you would have recognized the Camry and Accord to be superior to the LH cars. I'm no fan of Japanese cars, but they were definitely superior to their American counterparts. Ironically enough, I think that gap is narrower today than it was 10 years ago.

RawLee June 24th, 2008, 03:16 PM Hungarian "Solo" Concept Car, Super-Light and Ecological
http://www.industryweek.com/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=16608
June 18, 2008 -- The prototype for a new Hungarian car that can reach 140 kilometers per hour while only consuming between 1.5 and two liters of ethanol per 100 kilometers, was unveiled June 17 in Budapest.
The smooth,oval-shaped "Solo," developed by Hungarian company Antro and presented at Budapest's Museum of Transport, is just over three meters long, less than two meters wide and can carry up to three people, with the driver sitting between the two passengers. The car frame and body are made of a carbon fiber composite making the vehicle ultra-light, weighing only 270 kilograms (595 pounds).
The glass roof is entirely covered with high-performance solar panels, enabling the vehicle to cover 15-25 kilometers on solar energy alone. For longer trips, four small electric engines are also hidden behind each wheel.
"Solo is a hybrid car with two modes of functioning: moving in the city using electric engines, solar energy or even human power thanks to mechanic pedals attached to a generator -- for traffic jams. And for longer trips it uses a modern engine running on not only traditional but also biofuels and ethanol," said Antro director Zsolt Hegedus.
The interior is elegantly cosy with wood and leather everywhere, even on the steering wheel and on additional pedals allowing the passengers to help move the car along.
Solo is expected to cost about 12,000 euros (US$18,606), the usual price for a small city vehicle of this kind, but its carbon-dioxide emissions are only a quarter of that released by its non-hybrid rivals, its developers said.
They said they were hoping to begin mass production in 2012. Antro has also promised a big sister for Solo by that time. Baptised Duo, it will carry six people and its owners will even be able to go their separate ways if need be: according to its designers, it will be possible to transform the Duo into two Solos in ten minutes.

GTR22 July 19th, 2008, 06:18 AM I'd take the Commodore over the G8, that slab across the grill makes it ugly! And the Commodore looks more smoothly shaped. That Flex looks like a knock-off of the G-Class and the Element fused. UGLY!
I wished Ponitac and Ford had sense to bring the Australian designed success cars over to the states. Not ones that look like it but are some-what changed. FORD BRING THE FALCON!! But I did like the new GTO which was the old Commodore, basically same design!

Too each his own, I guess. I think the G8 looks little better due to the more aggressive front end.

It's way less ultra-sportive than other Ferrari models such as the F 430, but with 2+2 seats, a convertible hard-top and so on probably the best Ferrari for "every day-use" (e.g. for doing trips longer than two hours). I like it quite much, actually.

It also looks a lot less aggressive than most of their vehicles, and is sized more reasonably.
Plenty of good moves have gone into this car.

Well, I'm sure that they've done some research concerning the evolution trends in the luxury/sporty car compartment and that thier conclusions are these.
Personally the only one I don't like very much is the Panamera. Lambo and Aston look interesting to me (from a stylistic point of view), but I still think that they're too big (length over 5m).
skydive October 10th, 2008, 01:37 PM nah, lambo should stick to crazy 2 door cars, this one looks to clinical, like an audi

When they hit ages 28-30 things tend to change. At that point they realize that they are getting older and that guy with brains equals = money which = stable lifestyle which = safe environment for having kids which = a good thing because by that age they're running out of time.
Before that point most of them are just idiots.

like the new golf series, doesn't look like an MPV anymore.
i like that estoque concept from lamborghini, I think it's somewhat orginal over the other 4 door supercars, especially that center console.
that citreon concept looks crazy, but doesn't do it for me. Although, citroen's design direction is pretty amazing. it can easily compete with Mazda's.
Good Show. Thanks for the good pics.

nerdly_dood November 19th, 2008, 04:29 AM I think a 4-door lambo is a great idea - if four people can drive too fast and kill themselves in a regular car, and 2 people can drive WAY too fast and kill themselves very thoroughly in a lambo, why not let FOUR people drive way too fast and kill themselves thoroughly in a lambo?
I think the back end of the new Mustang is much improved from the 06 generation, but i can't tell the slightest difference in the front. The front isnt' bad in the current version, and if I can't tell a change then it probably isn't bad in the next one ;D
Aluminum inside the cab... I'm not fond of that. If you crash, aluminum will be more dangerous to give you a nasty cut, and also it'll get frost on it in the winter...

fiat engineers are not MAD :D, because there is also a limited edition with 200hp (from the same 1.4 litres engine with a bigger turbine than the normal abarth) called "assetto corse" (sold out), already able to run in a monobrand championship.
that's the pure abarth spirit like older race cars of 60's and 70's

How is an SUV different? If you're saying it's different from what Porsche usually comes up with, I'll agree with you. The Cayenne has 5 doors as well!! In my opinion, the proportions of the Panamera are slightly better than that of the Cayenne.
fozzy November 24th, 2008, 11:31 PM I think the Nissan Cube is a horrible design and i have seen a few here in the UK and they look even worse in reality.
