Im sorry but with all due respect to the religious sites, Syria is depressing and ugly. I dont see anything special about it at all... I mean of course all countries have an ugly side, but most also have a beautiful side as well - Syria doesnt. And yea they have so for what like two days?

Listen man , ur arrogance can be really annoying . U don't have to right the bash other countries just becuz urs is more liberal. I could also mention the bad sides Lebanon has , like the Hizbollah, the fanatics islamists and all that shit.
Anyway u seem to have serious issues. And one of them is ur superiority complex !

Cut it !!!

I don't think that you will get a forum if you persist with this atitude :sleepy:

I really dont understand where all this is coming from and why I am being attacked. I dont like Syria, period. So what? thats my opinion. This has nothing to do with politics.

And I never attack other countries, and Lebanon threads are very civil, the problems dont come from us they come from Palestinians and Israelis in the thread. So if a Lebanon Forum will have "constant trolling" I wonder who will be behind it?

You must be confused about me...

But you guys need to try and keep out of the arguements, we all have national pride and the ME forum is where it clashes with each other... I used to come to this forum just to get away from politics...and especially annoying lebanese politics, now my fellow lebanese insist on ruining one of my few net pleasures.

Damascus is one of my favorite cities, it is extremely warm and charming, and its people are amazing, one of the few Middle Eastern spots that are left -relatively- unspoiled.

Beirut's silly post comes from a -typically lebanese- sense of false superiority. I was worried that the arrogant lebanese attitude was poised to annoy the people on this forum -"we are the best", "we are better than all arabs" "we are 'different'".
Can anyone here kindly recommend an architectural forum without lebanese right-wingers in it?

Everyone, like I said before, I have always treated all with respect... If I wanted to be nasty about the Syrian people I would - but I didn't. All I said was I am not too fond of the city. It seems only Jayme understands what I meant. We are not impressed because it is not our style. I have actually been there unlike most people in this forum so I have every right to comment even if my comment isn't praising Syria.
In Damascus, the atmosphere is dull and depressing and you feel trapped surrounded by desert mountains, I am used to the freshness of Lebanon and the vast open sea. Also you feel like you have no freedom of expression and you have to watch what you said. More importantly if feels like you went back in time because it lacks the modernity we are used to in Lebanon. Some people may like that and I also like historical sites - but not a historical lifestyle.
As for nightlife, Jayme is right, there is none.... unless you enjoy walking around holding hands with other men and sitting in a men-only cafe talking about how much you love Assad.

Yes. You are right. For me Damascus is a bit like the old Eastern European cities, but with stone deserts everywhere. And for me the most beautiful city and its nature in Syria is Laz'iye.

You've got to be kidding me if you claim that Syria has no beauty. Damascus is one of the most historic cities in the entire middle east. No offence to the Lebanese but I would visit Damascus over Beirut any day even though I would also like to Beirut but Damascus has a fascinating history which cannot be ignored or disrespected. And nightlife isnt everything. If nightlife was the only source of entertainment then no one would ever go to Saudi Arabia or many other countries for that matter. I mean no offence to the Iranians but Iran doesnt have a great nightlife but I know that many people (including me) want to go to Iran simply because of its great history.

NO offence taken... and I agree with you.

Tho if nightlife is only getting drunk and stumbling around to loud music (u gotta love it) then Iran has a massive undergroud scene but no 'official' 'nightlife'. Also lots of restaurants, pool, go-karting etc etc to do at night... or even get stuck in traffic in up-town Tehran for about 4 hours with ~500,000 Iranian youths flirting with each other

^^yeaaa so great to c a city NOT ruined by modern buildings with some older charm!!! (sarcasm)
... anyone who drives into Syria will tell u thats its like traveling back in time 20 years (my professor actually was the one to say that!!!)
Beirut!, I think its safe to say that Jayme and I will go to bat with u on this one! plenty of lebanese will stand up for lebanon until they have someone standing up against them! no one understood wat he meant ... his personal opinion about the city came across and because he's lebanese u all attacked him! if anything, the generalization came from others in the forum and not him!
im not gonna go through and disect everything he said like last time because the man spoke english and it was crystal clear!

and Sargon, Jayme was actually talkin about Baghdad because hell even they have more of a nightlife then Syria! :sly: just to give u an idea, the few clubs in Syria are actually referred to as DISCOs!!!

PROUD RIGHT WINGER!!! has nothing to do with the fact that I dont like the Syrian gov't and everything to do with the fact that I love Lebanon!!!

on a personal note, I actually love the fact that some syrian villages and cities still have the old homes (that u c on TV with the fountain in the middle of the courtyard and rooms all around it ... i dont know wat they're called)

any pix of Halab? I hear the city and the girls there are pretty (post pix of the city, not the girls please!)

Aleppo has a large armenian population.
It has a reputation of having many beauties.(among armenians if my I heard my brother correctly).

Anyway I went to Syria when I was young .I rememmbered ALeppo looking so ancient( a historical city) but I was like 12 years.I lfairly liked it.
My friends tell me that its best to go to northern syria and especially Blodan.

Summer resorts and historical spots

The Syrian seashore is about 175 km long, and its numerous beaches are distinguished by soft sand, unpolluted sea, moderate climate and clear blue sky.

The coastal summer resorts in Syria are numerous. Scattered on the hills and mountains near the sea, they boast fresh air, cool weather in summer and moderate weather in winter.

Some of these summer resorts are:

Slenfeh
Kasab
Salma
Draykish
Misyaf
Wadi al-Oyyun
Safita

Lattaqia isn't that nice actually, there is the "tourist village" (with the resorts), which is only OK, the beaches aren't naturally sandy there, so they had to import dark sand, which does not look that nice, during the summer, algues fill the sea and make swimming very unpleasant.
The Lattaqia city itself (10 Km or so from the resort village) is really not very nice, I went there right after the mediterranean games (when they built the resort village, initially as an atheltes' village), and the city was painted in white, which made it look better, but that was more than 15 years ago.
I way prefer Damascus or Aleppo in terms of cities. In terms of sea resorts, the coast around tartous, is much better.

Wow just what I had in mind. A very historic and old city with many nice ancient buildings.
Amazing shots, Damascus should be so nice to visit. In Farsi we call it Dameshgh, I don't know if it's the same name in Arabic too.

In Arabic we call it Demashq but it is more common to call it "Sham" in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine & Jordan

I really like the pictures posted of Damascus. Especially the snow ones, I finally understand why Syrians are so white :)! (It was always a mystery for me)

I think that its rich history places it amongst the UNESCO world historical landmarks in the world! Aesthetics changes amongst people, I personally believe that it is BEAUTIFUL!

Yeah syrians look much different from the peninsular arabs. They have pale skin (tan skin is sexier ;) ).

Yes,it's a wonderful country...for tourist.
Corruption is incredibly high,at all levels, you can buy anything there, from the poor police traffic officer to the judge.
Anyone wants to open a business,he has to share his compagny with a moukabart officer(secret police).
Assad the father, has destroyed the economy, the people, the liberty, how can we understand that Amman is more modern than damas although 30 years ago, damas was one of the most developped city in middle east?

Just thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on Syria, as there are a number of new projects that are coming up, and it will soon join the rest of the region in development with Gulf money pouring in.

Emaar has started work on the Eighth Gate project there. CONSER is doing all the engineering work for it. Will post renders once they are finalized.
